I removed the following text, as, while informative, it didn't seem especially relevant:

  • Historical note: Before becoming president, New York-born Martin Van Buren was vice president under Andrew Jackson and was elected president just before Jackson left office, riding on Jackson's popularity. Four years and one economic crash later, he lost in 1841 to William Henry Harrison (who died after thirty days in office). He ran for president again in 1848 as a candidate for the anti-slavery Free Soil Party, which later evolved into the Republican Party.

Also, note that the Republican Party which evolved from the Free Soil Party (among other parents) aligned its platform ideals most closely with what is today the Democratic Party. (It's long and complicated. Just think of him as a modern-day Republican with a focus on states' rights.)
