Homestar Runner Wiki Forum

A lot of time, this wiki and the forum with it are not always operational. I sometimes receive that timeout message. What gives here? Why is the website always so touchy so much?

That is a very good question, Captain. I wish I had a good answer.

But I recently noticed that, at least on some occasions, the problem is with the Forum, but not with the Wiki. Earlier tonight, I managed to access several pages of the Wiki, but not a single page of the Forum at the same time. Unless the Forum is severely throttled down when the Wiki is up, I can only suppose the problem is elsewhere.

We have been in touch with our hosting service in an effort to eliminate this problem. We have already taken steps to decrease the CPU load and are discussing ways to ease the stress on the database for our very popular site. Our aim is always to provide the best experience for our users. Thanks for your patience as we continue to sort this out.

UPDATE:

JoeyDay and It's Dot Com have made some adjustments to the server setup that should help tremendously. I've already noticed drastic improvement in the way the Forum handles.

We are aware of the outage that occurred this evening. It was caused by a threshold setting on the new database server being set too low. We have increased the threshold to prevent further such instances. Thanks for your patience as we make tweaks to adjust our server for optimum performance.

Thank you guys for putting in all of the efforts into making things run more smoothly, I can imagine that it isn't the the most enjoyable thing in the world to do.

Why are we hosted on some mysterious weird hosting site? I mean, fellowsites? That's screaming "WE ONLY HOUSE THREE SITES LOLOLOL"

I'd imagine because large hosters cost more, and are so big that they never listen to their sites problems on an individual basis.

Fellowsites isn't actually a "host" per say. It's not like Joey has a couple of pentium IIs cooking in his basement for the site. The host is still technically Goleman Networks, and Fellowsites is just a reseller. As a reseller, Fellowsites gets to charge whatever they want for bandwidth and space, but all the hosted sites still get Goleman Network's infrastructure.

Every site that uses fellowsites could potentially offset some of the costs of the big fat expensive dedicated computer the hrwiki needs.

Also, you pay for a large hosting site, Rusty? Hey, I pay for one too. But I guarantee yours (nor mine) is nothing like what this is running on. This site used to be hosted on your standard run of the mill server, but it just couldn't keep up with the load. That was a couple of years ago now. As the site has grown, the computer has had to get beefier and beefier. If you look at the ledger, Joey's paying ~$840 every 3 months for the server + bandwidth.

I've noticed quite an improvement in the speed of the server, thanks to all that made it possible.
