Seriously, people have been talking about the end of the world since there was a world. What makes our current time so special?

The funny thing is, millions of people will be saying exactly that when the "end times" do come.

DISCLAIMER: I do not believe Jesus will come tomorrow, the day after that, or even next week. I have no idea when it will be. But the point is that the general population of Earth will be shocked at its timing. And we will be hearing a lot of "What makes our current time so special?"

Though I just remembered that furry isn't even Christian. So what does he care?

You're right, of course: if such "end times" do come, everybody will be all surprised, and my argument will be wrong. I don't see how that changes the overall validity of the argument. It'll have been right a million times and wrong only once.

Dude, if you have different theological beliefs than another member of our community, then that's fine. What's NOT fine is when you keep posting things like this that are blatantly disrespectful and are obvious attacks on a member's differing religious beliefs. Please stop--we really don't appreciate that here. Things run a lot smoother when we learn to live and let live. This thread was created for the purpose of expressing our personal beliefs on the end of the world--not for bashing each other's different beliefs.

Thanks, Gidley.

Your post was a lot more friendly than mine, but yeah, Lurve, he's right. If you're going to bash another member's beliefs, leave.

It's applied to everything. If a theist of any sort was giving grief to an Atheist, I'd step in just the same, and I trust the mods and admins would do the same. Why do you come here and automatically think that we're out to get you or Atheists? FurryKef is an Atheist, and has been a respected poster and debater here for quite a long time.

What are you talking about? Nobody's bashing any religion or lack thereof.

Most of our users are mature enough to respect the beliefs of others.

Is the end of the world coming? Probably not.

But even if it did, why would it be such a big deal, anyway? What's the worst that could happen if the world ends? That everything is destroyed and that everyone dies? We're all going to die one day, anyway...so what difference would it make if we all happened to die at once?

Our purpose for being here now is to simply live. There are more important things to think about than the end times.

I think the thing everyone has to remember is that we know that the world will end eventualy. Our sun will eventualy expand and consume the earth in a big firery ball of plasma. You can expect this in about one billion years from now. Between then and now it's anyone's guess what might happen, but you're more likely to be killed by a lightning strike than you are by any catastrophic end-or-the-world event. As a matter of fact, worrying about the end of the world will (statistically) shorten your life expectancy because you would be adding stress to your life for no reason.

That's not to say that the earth Isn't in serious trouble. We've done so much damage to the ecosystem that the consequences are upon us already. The good news is that human beings are very good at adapting to change. The challenge play out in that we may not be able to adapt fast enough, and in how our overall quality of life will suffer as a result of the bad choices we've collectively made over the generations.

Actually between one billion and five billion. I expect, no matter what the number is, we won't be around to experience it, though. Either we'll have all been killed off, or we'll have developed sufficient technology to migrate to another planet. If we've survived long enough, we'll probably have evolved to the point we wouldn't really be "humans" anymore, anyway... even just one billion years is a very long time, considering it's the length of almost a quarter of the current history of our planet. By comparison, the dinosaurs have risen and fallen in a bit less than 200 million years.

Ehh... toastpaint.

Furrykef, the thing about the 1 Billion year prediction is that that is roughly the point where The Earth would become to hot for biological life of any kind to survive. The planet itself would remain intact (more or less) until around +4-5 billion, but the place would be uninhabitable from +1 billion onward.

Your point about evolution is interesting, because we humans seem to be moving towards a "technological singularity". I think this means that we may be able to use technology to leverage the rate at which we adapt to the changes we have made to the earth, but I also see that there's only a limited time frame to do this. We depend on a wide base of existing infrastructure to maintain our high-tech civilization, and that base depends on the a healthy ecosystem. If the ecosystem becomes too hard to cope with, the infrastructure we depend on could easily collapse. If the infrastructure necessary to support such a high-tech civilization collapses, it could potentially lead to wide-spread chaos, possibly even a collapse down into anarchy.
A time-accelerated model for how this is so was seen in the Hurricane Katrina disaster, particularly in New Orleans. That is, what happened there in the space of a few weeks is what could happen to human civilization all over the globe in the space of a few years if we're not careful.* What happened there should be a wake-up call for everyone.

EDIT: *Don't take part that too literally. I'm talking about the breakdown of infrastructure due to ecological consequences, not necessarily a hurricane.

The question of "when" is entirely irrelevant in my opinion. what matters is our perspective. We must not be too comfortable with this earth and our lives on it, because it will end someday, maybe very soon. But we also must not let the possible immimence of the world's end skew our priorities. We can't quit our jobs because the world will end soon. We can't stop planning for the future.

I agree in principle with Didymus
Didymus wrote:
We Christians aren't to waste our time with all this "end of the world" doom-and-gloom sensationalism. Rather we are to live out our calling as God's people in the here and now. Christ will come when he comes, not a second sooner or later.

I've often thought, "how should my behavior change if the world ends tomorrow?" and the answer is, "Nothing I shouldn't be doing already"

The end of the world is not coming. I remember Y2K all too well to think that the world is going to end when the media says it will.

Wait...that principle applies to a lot of things the media tells us. ;)

Snail, that was very insulting to my faith. You should know better than to call my fellow Christians & me "idiots".

Just because we won't be on the Earth when it ends doesn't mean that it's not coming.

The second coming of Jesus

Jesus: Sorry I'm late guys, I was held up, but I'm finally here! (LONG PAUSE) Hello? Anyone here? (LONG PAUSE) Oh that's right, those crazy liberals started a nuclear war that resulted in the destruction of mankind. Damn it!

That is, assuming that the 1000 Year Kingdom is a literal 1000 year period of time, and not a description of God establishing his kingdom through the Church. Revelation is a very tricky book to try to interpret too literally. And this is coming from a guy who believes that Jesus' Body and Blood really are given to us in the Sacrament.

Dr. Lurve: wouldn't matter. He'd just raise all the dead anyway.

Why do you automatically assume that all Christians in America vote Republican? You're only looking like more and more of a bigot when you post malarky like this.

I typically don't vote Republican. I tend to vote for candidates I feel best represent me and my concerns, and I do not always feel that Republicans always do that best. For example, I have never voted for President Bush, mostly because I do not feel he truly represents me or my concerns on all issues. For example, I do not agree with the current situation in Iraq. I felt he was hasty in his invasion and could have probably accomplished our stated goals (forcing Iraq to comply with UN weapons inspections) with far less force than a full-scale invasion. So, no, not all Christians are Republicans, and the vice-versa is definitely not true, either.

Dictionary.com:

"joke ( P ) Pronunciation Key (jk)
n.
Something said or done to evoke laughter or amusement, especially an amusing story with a punch line.
A mischievous trick; a prank.
An amusing or ludicrous incident or situation.
Informal.
Something not to be taken seriously; a triviality: The accident was no joke.
An object of amusement or laughter; a laughingstock: His loud tie was the joke of the office. "

The bold is mine.

Now, I am not saying ALL Christians vote Rep., but I can certainly say that a large majority do.

I figured you might pass this off as a joke, but keep in mind that your current track record here made me think otherwise. You've been largely rudely sarcastic and insulting members here--especially Christians--almost ever since you joined. That's why I automatically assumed malice behind that comment. And I'm not even Christian.

Care to explain yourself Lurve? And please, if it's rude or mocking, then expect punishment. You're walking on thin ice while wearing cleats right now.
