It was a big issue in Canada for a long time-Pitbulls are violent dogs.Everyone should have the right to raise their dog but if the dog shows violent tendencies it must have a muzzle and a leash at all times.

I really don't think animal ownership is a "right". A lot of people are really hip nowadays calling anything they think they're entitled to a "right".

Honestly, I still think it's an issue of nature vs. nurture. Not all pit bulls are violent (they're not much more inherently violent than any other dog*). The people who would have dogs purely because the dogs are violent probably shouldn't have dogs anyway (I'm not talking about police/military/guard dogs)

Pitbulls should be legal to have. For some reason, the pushing to banninate them in cities reminds me of Columbine. Remember when afterwards, one of the first things the news reporters said was that the shooters were fans of Doom. Then, parents, Senators, and Jack Thompson were complaining that video games promote violent behavior, and gamers were generally looked down upon because of what two kids did.

All those attacks by pitbulls is only by a vast minority. Real-life violent gamers are also a minority. It's not everyday that a pitbull or some other type of dog attacks a person, and neither do violent gamers do violent acts. If the dog was raised well and treated with care, then it should be friendly. Those who were abused and raised for fighting will attack people.

I say just stop beating around the bush and punish those who are making them aggressive. It annoys me when I see people on the news trying to get a breed of dog banned. Sure, it might get rid of dog attacks, but many more people will lose their pet companions.

Plus, the people mistreating the dogs (making the dogs lash out in violence and getting them banned) would just find a new breed to terrorize into the same violent behavior.

I agree with StrongRad, too--we don't have a "right" to own animals, anymore than we have a "right" to own any other part of the world. We're not gods or kings of this planet...if anything, we're stewards.

I think they should be allowed but they should wear muzzles.

There is some stuff in there about pit bulls.
The dogs were bred for fighting in many parts of the world. They are evolving into dangerous animals. We should be safe around them but not ban them.

Here in Colorado, pit bulls are banned in many cities. A lot of the cases are dogs that look like pit bulls, but are different breeds. It's the owners who make pit bulls violent, not the dogs themselves.

The dogs are inherently aggresive but i am not sure they are violent.

While pitbulls can be agressive dogs, with proper care and raising, they can be gentle. It's not just the dog that makes them dangerous, it's how they were raised.

How the dog is bred can greatly affect their patterns in behavior.

I'm-a come in here now.

No, not all pit bulls are bad. But, the fighting instinct has been bred in to their blood. For instance, 40% of dog attacks come from pit bulls. Before you say that 40% isn't a lot, take this in to consideration: There are hundreds and thousands of breeds. And just one breed making 40% is too much, in my opinion.

Pit Bulls were historicaly bred to display dominance and agression to other dogs, which is what I mean by "bred in to their blood".

It really bugs me when people say that "Pit bulls are only mean because people are mean to them". I was just watching Animal Cops, and there was a Border Collie that had been burned severly on the ears and eyebrows, and guess what? When they went to rescue him, his tail was still wagging, he was still friendly and sweet. Many, many breeds are abused and hurt, but they don't take up 40% of all dog attacks, now do they?

Granted, all animals, domesticated or not, are unpredictable. I just believe that Pit Bulls are more unpredictable than others. I'd rather have a Border Collie or an Australian Shpherd, thank you.

And we don't have a right to own animals. If we did, I think that should be changed. Animal ownership should be a revocable privledge, not a right!

A pit-bull killed one of my swans. I have a grudge.

Our next door neighbors have a pit bull, but they keep him in the backyard most of the time.

But when they are out in the front yard, they let him run around without a leash, and he's come into my garage to growl at my kids. He has also dug under the fence into my backyard a couple of times, and out into the street another time, though, and I'm really not happy about that. My 3 year old is just terrified of dogs in general and these things just aren't helping.

Eventually I'm just gonna have to be a jerk and tell my neighbors to keep that dog on a leash or I'm gonna have to call cops or something.

You kick mah dog!

Seriously, though, if it were any breed other than a pitbull, do you think you'd be having the same or similar problem with the same neighbors?

Well, they do let their other dogs loose as well, sooo, I dunno. It bugs me whenever they let them run around my front yard without a leash (mostly because they don't bother to clean up the poop). And there are leash laws here. But I will admit to being more nervous around the pitbull than the weiner dog, especially when my kids are out.

Man, you better watch your kids. A Pit Bull killed my friends dog once. Ripped it to shreds. Just.... Make sure your kids are supervised, or better yet, not even outside with the pit bull.

Just be careful.

Just get a mastiff or an Irish Wolfhound. Tell your kids it's a horse or a bear.
Neither dog could outfight a pit bull, but they wouldn't exactly have to. They could always just sit on it.

In Winnipeg in Canada a pitbull ripped a young girl to threads-she was four years old and was bitten and bloody all over and they couldn't get the dogs jaw off her arm even after they shot the dog-they had to use pliers.
