Influential in what way? With the person's ideas and philosophies? With specific types of action? It's hard to pinpoint one person who had more influence than any other...especially without more specification...

But for now, I'll say Johannes Gutenberg. Without his famous press for mass-producing the written word, the majority of people might still today be much more ignorant and susceptable to the minority of power-hungry elites. In my opinion, education and questioning the world around you (including and especially your own pre-established beliefs) is the greatest tool towards the evolution of the human race as a sophisticated species.

What i meant was someone who effected time. Someone who left an impression on Earth we won't forget.Whose Ideas or inventions have transformed the way man sees himself and others...Influence is all that.
I Think the printing press is a great discovery but do u believe TV would have came in anyway...Would someone have thought of printing press eventually?
Your thoughts?

Jesus Christ, hands down. No person has shaped this world like he has.

What about, like, Moses?

How many people have created and followed a new religion in Moses' name? How many wars have been fought in Moses' name?

Some would contend the current Near East conflict. O_O

But I agree with BTG. Even Moses was not as influential as the Lord Jesus Christ.

He'd still be the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, God Incarnate.

Yeah, it's probably Jesus. I'm not even Christian, but he was, and still probably is, the most influential person ever.

I agree with that. He hasn't really influenced me, but that doesn't mean he hasn't influenced billions of people over the years.

I might say Jesus not because of his religion but because of the influence of Christian Culture in the World i mean non-christians festivally celebrate Christmas and Easter.Christian films...Books and legends...Empire have been founded on the basis of Christianity...My vote would probably go to Christ

I agree, but...Emperor Constatine, Popes Gregory VII and Urban II, Henry VIII, among other leaders, have had huge parts in making the life of Jesus as "war-friendly" as it is...not to say Ayatollah Khomeini, Saladin or Ali haven't made Islam the same way. But I agree with you in that any figure who is constantly used throughout the years to create such political and military crises can be seen as the most influential. Jesus is but one of these figures; what about Muhammed, Isaac, Confucious, Siddhartha...while the last two really aren't used in the context of war, these guys have effected billions of people as well.

Well, I think it's a given that Jesus Christ would be the most influential, so now the question is besides Jesus, who was the most influential?

Very well then.

God.

I wouldn't exist if it wasn't for him.

Only, Jesus is God, right? So that's covered.

I actually read a book once on the top 100 most influential individuals of all time. I only remember four of them, though.

Number one was Muhammad, two was Sir Isaac Newton, three was Jesus, and five was Saint Peter.

I actually think it will end up being the Wright brothers. Think about it: How much future space travel will we owe to their achievements?

Oh, and by the by...

I think the poll and thread is supposed to be about the most influential PERSON...so God doesn't count.

That is highly debatable.

Well, Jesus did state that he was the Son of God. So, if he wasn't, then he was insane.

And if that was the case, then I wouldn't call him very influential.

On another notice, who is to say that God doesn't look like a person? No one knows what he looks like.

So I am still staying with my choice.

Well, the point isn't whether Jesus' message was true or not--it's, as people already said, how enough people believed him to carry out wars and theocracies in his name. That has major influence no matter how you slice it. And as far as God--God is not a person, I think we can all agree, no matter if he/she/it LOOKS like a person. The thread is asking about the most influential HUMAN BEING--not spiritual entity or diety, even if that entity/diety APPEARS human.

You're right. God isn't a person. God is Three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, of which only the Son took human form. So for now, I would suggest we keep the discussion limited to the Son.

If I had to pick one person who's had the most profound effect upon human civilization, I'd have to say Adam Smith.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Smith
If you've ever freely bought or sold something, been involved in the stock market, lived in a capitalist society, or had a liberal government, his ideas helped lay the foundation for those experiences. And if you're a economist, he's likely considered the grandfather of your profession.
So why did I pick him and not Albert Einstein or Issac Newton? Because money makes the world go 'round. Science and physics are certainly profound, but they don't necessarily touch every man the way money does. If you'd worded the question differently I might have picked someone else, but you left it open for everyone to define the parameters for him or herself, so that's what I did.
You can expect my bill in the mail. (just kidding. I fax my bills.)

Well sure, if you're gonna get all Christian Theology on us, but what about our Jewish and Muslim friends? I think they might have something to say about the person of God.

God isn't in the rules of this thread-he/she/it is not mortal or human.
We have to scientifically know they exist.

Jesus Christ, but if I couldnt choose him....

Thomas Edison. He just did so much for the world. We wouldnt have recorded music and lightbulbs. That would suck.

Other than Christ probably Hitler.I mean he left an impression on Earth, he is considered evil, He has spawned at his point the largest "political party", a new type of music, A world war, and Not to mention he is was considered the smartest war tactician in human history.

Ah, but Napoleon said "Don't fight a war on two fronts." Hitler went west to France through Belgium, but he also went east toward Russia. So I wouldn't call him the greatest war tactician.

But back on topic, I would put Nicolas Copernicus & Galileo Galilei up there.

He didn't mess up Russia too bad..
Ever hear of Operation Barbarosa? Of course, it can be argued that the Russians didn't bet the Germans there, rather they just survived the weather better..

Moses. definitely more influential than Jesus. Jesus had a lot of influence on the world, certainly (and, if you ask me, unfortunately), but without Moses, Jesus wouldn't even have existed (if he did actually exist, that is; and if he did, he was the son of God only in the same sense that i am).

besides Moses, and more recently, i would say Winston Churchill. the man saved the world. the planet would be a VERY different place if it hadn't been for him.
