I prefer a blend known as SocioCapitalism, that's run like a Democracy or Democratic-Republic, but has certain programs to make sure that everyone's most basic of needs (food, shelther, health care, etc.) are provided for, with the ability to work for a better quality of life. Rather like what Gene Roddenbury created for his Star Trek series.

He pretty much stated what it was. Everyone has the basics, food, water, clothes, shelter. But with hard wook you can move and gain better things, but you will still have the basics incase something happens. In Capitalism, there's always going to be people that are worse off than others, but that by no means that people should be so poor that they are denied the basic needs to survive.

Star Trek was socio-capitalist? I thought that nobody actually made any money. At risk of revealing my inner nerd, I remember Kirk saying something like that in the movie where they find themselves in 1980's San Francisco. He said something to that extent.

You're right--they don't make money. But they earn "work credits" which can be used to improve their quality of life. It's pretty much like earning a salary or wage--the only difference is that you can't invest or gamble work credits like you can invest and gamble money. This prevents those people who would get rich by not really contributing to society.

I stand corrected.
I like that idea. I like that idea a lot. I don't think I could do without gambling, though. I'd miss the weekly poker night too much.

That sounds like a great idea. I likes it. Maybe I should bring that up in my Sociology 204 class...

As for the poker nights, I could live without them, considering I always lose.

I don't know all the details of the programs--just that they would provide for the basic needs without giving people more than they need (sorta like prisons, I guess, but without the free Cable TV and the restrictions of freedoms through incarceration). And I think that with those basic needs being met, they would have no need for unemployment checks...that would just give them incentive to not work to contribute to society.

The incentive to contribute to society is the 60 inch DLP TV, PS3, gourmet food, etc.. :-)

No, I'm not familiar with it....apparently, neither is Wikipedia or Dictionary.com...please, enlighten me.

Don't forget the lovely Mason & Hamlin concert grand piano. Them pianers are a right mighty-fine and downright purdy. ;)

No, only basic needs would be met. Beer, important as it is, is not a basic need. Same with the Big-Screen TV, expensive car with loud sound system, flashy clothes, etc that people who cry about not making ends meet seem to still buy.

Dude, I don't know--I don't think that's the point of this thread necessarily. Those are just minor details of one system, whereas we're discussing many different systems and what we like best...

I'm going to agree with the Piano master that we're getting too far off topic. Please make a thread about the credits if you want to keep talking about them.

Out of these choices? Well, true communism would support equality between all, but that's near impossible. A true Democracy also stated that everyone has an equal say, but not equal pay. Personally, SocioCapitalism would probab;y be the best choice, if possible.

You know how I voted, so I'll let 'ol Winston sum it up for me:

Quote:
It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.
Sir Winston Churchill
British politician (1874 - 1965)

You just described Canada under Pierre Elliot Trudeau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Trudeau) and the Liberal Party. It's gone downhill a bit since then, but in hindsight I can see how it was a bit of a fool's paradise under him: We were very progressive and enlightened, and hostpitals and doctors were free and abundant (still got the free part, not so much the abundant), schools were excellent, university was affordable, the roads were in great shape, the British and the Americans weren't pushing us around like they were in WWII, but were were running up deficit budget every year and that's just not a good idea, especially when you still have WWII debt to pay off. We had it good, but we were running up a huge tab in the process.
Still, Trudeau was the first guy that actually stood up to the Americans and told them what we though of being their hewers of wood and drawers of water. More than that, he carved out a new relationship with the US, one where we charted our own destiny and didn't say 'how high' when the US said 'jump' anymore. He's probably best remembered for that. Oh, that and it ticked off Nixon like nothing else knowing that he had a Socialist Pinko Commie (that's what Nixon thought of him, anyways) for a northern neighbor and there wasn't a damm thing he could do about it. That alone was worth the ticket price.
