Yea... That's REALLY mature. Who woulda thought that getting down on their level is the way to be better than them?

simple: when you got a whole school of brainless posers, goths, and gangsters who know nothing of true moral value and all that they can comprehend is violence and swears.

Yes, and the primary person who would be so offended is God himself.

Not according to Scripture. (James 1:26, 3:5-9, not to mention Ex 20:7).

Whether you wish to acknowledge it or not, words do have power. With them, you can crush someone's spirits, or lift them out of dark despair. And no one knows that better than someone in my profession.

But swearing doesn't have to be offensive. Swearing doesn't have to be another problem in our society.

But it is offensive. Just because some people get sensitized to it does not make it acceptible. I don't find it acceptible.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, words are mouth noises. They could mean anything, or nothing, depending on who you are, and what belief you hold. A word may have meaning, until someone decides "I don't like that word, let's use this one instead," and the word is abandoned. If words can lose power so easily, why let them bother you?

Language is based on the assumption that everyone can agree on what a word means. Language also allows for new words come in to existance, and old words to become obsolete. At some point in time, only historians will know the meanings of these "swear" words. If it's going to lose meaning eventually, why not just let it lose meaning to you now? It would definatley save all of us quite a bit of grief.

If they lost their meaning, why would people use them?

Alec's situation demonstrates that the words themselves are NOT mere mouth-noises, and that they do in fact convey meaning. The fact that some people find fowl language offensive further demonstrates that these words have not lost their power. I therefore do not agree with your under-assessment of the power and meaning of such words.

Your blind hope that these words will "eventually lose their meaning" does not change the fact that they are hurtful, cruel, and obscene NOW.

And if you don't believe that, try going to a black neighborhood and calling someone there The N Word.

And this is especially true when such words are used in a hateful, verbally-abusive way, which is clearly the case that Alec is describing. So tell me, NT (and I'm sure you actually do have lots to say on this), if it was your father who was in your face cursing you out, how would you feel about it? And after you've given that some thought, then go back and review the points I've made.

I really don't care if someone swears at me. I am mostly level-headed about things like this. The last time I got really mad about swears I got suspended for 2 weeks and 4 kids had to go to the hospital.

Embarrest for the person. It just shows that they lack the intelligence to properly insult others/defend themselves, so they swear.

Thats the most accurate description for my brother I've ever seen.....
And I've seen you swear a lot before Funky.

Yet I feel no difference. Except for this thought.
No, just no.

I swear while I use intelligent arguments, just to give them a boost. I don't just say "F-bomb you!" or anything like that.

yes, and repeating what clan said on your DA is really an intelligent response to "Do you know the Times?"

Thank you Thomas, that was very helpfull.

Now for a little bit of my own ideas.

To COLA:
Cola, swearing at those who swear at you will never work. If I went to my dad and started swearing at him because he used language at me, that would not only break me apart and deystroy the promise I made to myself, but I would then make myself even worse then my dad. You can never fight sin with sin.

To No Toppings:
Toppings, swear words can never lose their meanings. Becaue of that was true, then all words would'nt make sence. If I said, "My kitty ran up the tree!" and the word had no meaning, then I wouldn't know what I said. And for that matter, all words wouldn't make sence and no one could communicate with each other! Do you see what I'm saying?

And the same thing goes for swearing. It's purpose is to hurt. And so much so that it becomes sin.

I'm a writer Toppings, and I love litature. One thing I have learned is this, words do have power. They can discribe everything from the love of a child and a parent, to the horrific era of the Holocaust.

If they are not as terrible as someone murdering you, then let me say this; I would rather have my dad punch me in the stomach, throw me accross my room into a wall, and then tear apart one of my books then swear at me. For me, swearing is the most hurtful thing you can do to me. I love words, so they do matter very much to me.

And if words and thoughts don't have meaning, then Adolf Hitler's thoughts and speaches would have never started the Holocaust.

Ding ding ding ding ding ding! Godwins Law has been invoked!

Quote:
Godwin's Law (also Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is, in Internet culture, an adage originated in 1990 by Mike Godwin that states: As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.

If there's one thing I've learned over my extensive time on the internet, is that a comparison to Hitler or Nazi's is a sign that the poster has nothing else left. Therefore, in accordance with the law, this thread is now over, and whoever brought up Hitler has lost the current argument.

There are many things to take into consideration when someone's swearing at you. What the swears mean and how they say them are two of them. I'm of the opinion that how someone says it can change what they mean quite fast. Laughing with friends and dropping an F-bomb in a happy, "kidding" environment is much less severe than someone telling you to "F off" when they are dead serious.

The best thing you could to is take it. Don't stoop down to the person's level and swear back.

I myself am actually a real casual swearer in real life. Though I'm mindful of the people here and the rules, so I can control myself and keep from swearing here.

THAT REALLY MEAN GERMAN GUY WHOSE NAME YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO SAY IN FORUMS!! (or TRMGGWNYNSTSIF!!, because we have to abbrev everything).
THREAD = VERY OVER!! YOU = VERY LOSE'D!!

I do not give a Funk, honestly. Frankly, I find people's usage of "swear" as a noun more insulting than any actual profanity itself. I'll give a more detailed reply when I've got more time and read the thread through.

edit: I think the main point is that words are not much more than means of expressing ideas, and when you consider that adding "f****ng" (censoring the word even though it completely defies my point and my personal feelings) as an intensifier to a phrase adds NO meaning at all, I can see no reason to be offended. Being called a "***t" is no different - it means nothing more than "generally objectionable person".

edit 2: I should add that it is almost impossible to offend me regardless of the language you use.

Actually, that word is far, far, FAR more hurtful than "generally objectionable person". If I got called that, I'd kick whoever said it in the pants and then run away crying. Don't you ever call anyone that, unless they're, like, a terrorist or something.

Damik, you are an insensitive twit. Myrrh has a valid point, and frankly, if anyone were to call any of my friends that...well let's just say that if violence didn't ensue, then it would mean a great deal of self control on my part.

And I would pose this question: if the terms in question did not carry actual meaning, then why even use them? Why not use the term "smurf" instead?

But regardless of whether you find the words offensive or not, the people you use them with very well might. Again, my example of going to a black neighborhood and using the N word.

You know that word is supposed to mean someone is very, very, very, very jerktastic. Nobody deserves to be called that casually.

Sigh. Clearly I'm not/you aren't going to understand this anytime soon.

I suppose this is a little biased anyway, because I think the word in question is generally considered to be a lot less offensive over here. Officially and formally if you ask somebody around here they will probably tell you it's the most offensive word you can say, but a large proportion of people will use it in a completely non-serious, often affectionate way. And I'm not talking about ten-year-olds, either.

edit: This is the thing that bothers me, by the way:
Marshmallow Roast wrote:

Why is this offensive? It's not as though it's an accusation of anything. If somebody called you a murderer, I could understand that being offensive because killing people is generally accepted as being an abhorrent thing to do. Whereas simply swearing at somebody says nothing more than "I don't like you".

Well, in the interest of getting us back on track, I will remind everyone that the situation that Alec is describing is one in which someone used the language in a deliberately hurtful way.

In this case, it says "You are a worthless person, and you can go to Hell". Or something equivalent. Sure, the person you're saying it to probably isn't actually that way, but knowing that one person thinks that of them can lead to severe emotional wounds.

Only if that person a)craves the attention and affection of other people, or b) is extremely fragile emotionally or mentally.

Respecting other peoples feelings is one thing, and if someone told me that I couldn't swear around them, I would gladly oblige. But saying that swearing is wrong and no one should ever do it is something else entirely. If someone told me that swearing is a sign of low intelligence, I would be more insulted by that than if someone called me a *insert massive chainswear*. I happen to be very intelligent, especially verbally. The fact that I swear (often) does not make me any less intelligent.

No Toppings, I respect you very much, but I'm afraid that advice wasn't very helpful to me.

A friend once said this to me:

I disagree. After all, Jesus was without sin. Would you day he never lived much?

well, i use the "F" word on a fairly regular basis in my house, occasionally in front of my seven and 12 year old sisters... though i really try not to use language like that in front of them if I can help it. mostly i use swearing when i am mad or stub my toe or do something stupid. it's a reactionary habit. unfortunately, i have a bad potty mouth... and watching South Park probably doesn't help me any.

i am against using swearwords lightly toward others though. its one thing to say f**** when you stub your toe, its another to throw it at someone. i'm all for saving that type of usage for emergencies (though i swear to myself a lot when driving behind bad drivers)

its one thing to do it to their face, its another to swear to yourself about them where they can't hear. but i guess it is damaging... its just a really hard habit to break.
