I think that it's all the bad things said about intercourse that scare younger people away from it. Nobody can really say "Sex is good for you!" because it's such a taboo topic, but most people think that it really is. Either that or more than half of the people around the world feel guilty about it every day. Sex before marraige is alright in my eyes, but I really don't care if you think it's wrong. It's all opinion. Just don't go making laws about it.

Also, I've realized that I can't say "don't go making laws about it" because you may think that having sex before marraige is just as wrong as killing somebody, which is obviously against the law. So confusing...

About contraception, I think it's fine, and a better way to have sex than unprotected. Also, I agree that saying "Don't have sex." to hormone filled teenagers won't work. It's a natural urge, it's kinda hard to overcome those. We'll see if Marshmallow roast can actually pull this off.

I know a lot of people who have pulled it off.

All it takes is some self control.

While some would laugh at them, I admire them. I wish I had that kind of self control. Not saying I regret anything (far from it), but my mind is saying "what if?".

I don't look down on either side of the "abstinence/premarital sex" debate. To each their own.

If you're not abstinent, you'd better be using protection/contraceptives..

Quote:
Well I would never marry anyone I haven't had sex with.

I can respect that, but, to that (for me anyway), I add I would never have sex with anyone I wouldn't marry.

Fortunately, I'm engaged, and quite happy with where I am.

I really don't know how much more I want to say on here about that particular aspect of my life..

well, in my opinion of this subject, Condoms and Spermicide should be handed out to teenagers in The schools Sex Education Class. i mean, half of the teenage population is having sex, the rest are the other kinds of nerds, the people who wont do it until their married, and me.
i know parents dont like this subject and they would be forcing their children not to be having intercourse, but the teens do it anyway. back in the good ol' days,(1940-1963), Parents told their children that their bodies were gross, disgusting, and dirty, and that woman were sin and other things of this sort, trying to discourage them from having sex, but they did it anyway. the biggest issue, i belive, is have sex when the time is right, or wait until marriage. teenage men feel that having sex makes you a man, but it doesnt, you become a man when you are more responsible, and can take care of yourself. as for now, kids, dont have sex, it can wait.

Oh, come on. That's almost like telling them to do it. I think people should abstain until they're ready, but I think doing that is just wrong. And spermicide doesn't really do much other than maybe making it so you won't have a kid.

What, holding out until marraige, or just never doing it at all?

Too true, too true.

I'm sorry, but the fact that you had to inform us you were taking "deep, slow" breaths and purposely stuttered just shows that you're overreacting.

I can't say what's good or bad for you, but I can ask you to say why you feel that way, and if you're just thinking htat because you're young and haven't yet questioned the values you somehow assimilated.

Sexual intercourse is perfectly natural and the fact that you're so afraid of it IS unnatural and whatever caused you to be this way is an unnatural influence that will probably prove ultimately harmful.

Do you really think that receiving a condom is the deciding factor in a teen's decision to have sex? If the opportunity arises, most teens (guys anyway) are going to go for it condom or no. They handed them out in my high school and I've never heard of anyone going nuts and "trying them out" right away. I can't really imagine a kid thinking "Well, I was going to wait until I was more mature to have sex, but since I have this nifty condom..." Also, they do warn you about condoms not being 100% effective when you receive them.

I was talking about Spermicide doing nothing at all. Obviously, I don't think handing out condoms is the deciding factor, but whatever.

Okay, just wondering, because Marshmallow Roast is saying "Never ever ever ever ever!". Well, not really, but still the same thing.

Perhaps I need to do a little more explaining.

I'm not 100% sure on the whole subject. Infact, I'm willing to accept it. If I can be shown it's safe. It's more of an unstable opinion then a decision. But I suppose I was a little too nervous. So I apologize.

Infact, I will now give my opinion on the subject.

I believe in doing "it" after Marraige. No exceptions.

P.S. Rose, to be truthful, I'm 16. Going on 17 in August. And have kept this thought in my mind for over 3 years now.

But you said "it" is what destroys marriage. I don't think this is true at all. I think Marriage destroys Marriage. People try to hard to become one person, and that messes everything up. It removes all the adventure, all the romance. Sex doesn't destroy marriage at all, it helps to seal a physical bond. I know you're unsure about it, but the way you were talking about it showed you were overreacting to concept on some level.

Two people becoming one person, figuratively, of course, is what marriage is all about. The doesn't destroy romance or adventure at all..
Selfishness, immaturity and mistrust are what destroy marriage.

Selfish, immaturity and mistrust are human nature. Current marriage rituals or not.

True, but just because they're human nature doesn't mean that they can't be overcome. You really don't have much faith in humanity, do you?

If you were in my position, you wouldn't either.

And why should we tailor ourselves to suit our constructs, instead of tailoring them to suit us?

In today's society, we find that parents spend less and less time with their children. Thusly resulting in not having time to discuss sex and contraceptives with their children. Plus, in this day and age, teens are going to have sex no matter what people say (it's happened for ages, no matter how many times people will deny it), so why not have them be safe.

This is not a matter of religion, this is also a matter of personal responsibility. If someone, regardless if they are teens or not, chooses to have sex, they should have contraceptives available. Look at countries where contraceptives are not readily available. Their AIDS statistics are through the roof.

It is also not a matter of having faith in humanity either. Some people cannot, and won't by choice, deny their urges. If they are going to give in, and cannot handle a child, why deny them their rights to have safe sex and take away contraceptives? You would be leaving a lot of people with one option, back-alley abortions. And don't say that celibacy is an option, because that is just unreasonable. If you choose to be celibate, please don't drag the rest of the world down with you.

Just because they are available doesn't mean you have to use them. It's called free will...Taking them away is imposing someone's idea of morality upon everyone, and taking away people's rights. You have the right to not use them, just as people have the right to use them. Morality, as I have said over and over and over again, is a personal issue.

Sure, some interpretations of the Bible prohibit the use of such things, but here's a news flash...

Not everyone follows that interpetation or, if not Christian, even necessarily cares.

I know plenty of Christians who would have a slough of kids if they didn't have contraceptives. Plus, not everyone is a Christian, so the Bible does not apply to them (no matter what a Christian may say, people of other faiths, I find, are not so vehement in their pursuit to inflict their ideals upon others, or law for that matter.)

I see solution to this very simple:

If you don't like them; don't use them. Don't take people's right away just because you don't agree with something. If it is something as mundane as a product, then you don't have to use that product.

You are still sticking to the tenets of your faith by not using them yourself.

So, in closing, leave people who use them alone and live your own life. Nobody is forcing you to use them. Offering is not forcing.

The Pallor Has Spoken.

How about we split the difference?

Don't actually hand them out, like going room to room, handing them out (that kinda sounds like what you're advocating, Pallor, if it isn't, "my bad"), but make them available.

Teach abstinence, and say something like, "not everyone is abstinent, if you're not, you really should use condoms. If you don't want to buy them or can't afford them, you can get condoms from room such and such.."

They kinda did that in my high school, only condoms weren't actually available at school, you got them at the Health Department, but since it was next door, it was more or less the same thing.

Sounds like both sides (well, maybe not both "sides", but at least the majority) would be happy with that.

My thoughts exactly. At my school, they don't even say condoms can do anything. They talk down about them, they say not to use them. All they do say is to be abstinent until marriage, but that's just beating around the bush. Tell them why. It's because they have responsibility. Marriage does not give you responsibility, it's something you have to develop yourself. I say be abstinent until you can actually support a child, not until marriage, which does nothing at all to you.

They should also say that condoms are not 100% effective at preventing pregnancy or some STDs, although they are tons more effective than nothing at all.
This is a good idea (not only because it IS true, but also because it absolves the school of legal responsibility. I think that's one of the reasons that my high school didn't give out condoms. If it breaks, given the right judge, a lawsuit could develop.. "Teacher said I would be completely safe if I used one, and I did, but it broke and I got pregnant!"..

I would agree, but I don't even think people should get married untill they are ready for that responsibility. It's supposed to be a commitment. I guess it's really not anymore.

Saying that they're not %100 effective is obvious, yes. Neither is abstinence against STD's, you might get pubic lice just sleeping in the same bed, so it's more like %99.9. No, I'm not trying to prove a point other than it's not %100 like many people would believe, there's still a chance. Just use common sense about who you sleep with. Literally.

Anyway, I'm glad I can finally agree with a person on this, it's been bugging me for a while.

Better birth control than an abortion, IMHO.

Yeah, I agree. Personally I don't understand how other liberals are so pro-abortion as it's a big grey area for me. I think it's one of those issues people don't think about enough. I have friends that would kill me but I think it'd be better to have the baby and put it up for adoption, or possibly even make use of a surrogate mother(which is probably costly, but possible, I think).

Either way, it doesn't equate to murder exactly because whether or not it's alive, it has not had a chance to be born and become a "person", so to speak. It doesn't make it right, just more understandable.

I really have when I see neo-con rubbish comparing death penalty and abortion, saying the only difference between the two is that the baby is innocent. I have so many problems with that but that's another argument.

I don't really understand. What if sex is a romantic moment? What if it's the only place a relationship can go further with? If you're absolutely sure you love someone, wouldn't sex just be the next step in showing that love?

I heard something on the radio today that made me go Muhahhahahhaha........

Apparently, two Harvard academics were investigating the cause for the success of Ireland's economy over the past two decades. And they found that it wasn't down to EU membership, or the Celtic Tiger, or can-do attitude, or anything else that people reckoned was behind it.

Nope, it was down to the legalisation of the contraceptive pill in 1979. With the pill, there were fewer babies to put a strain on the economy, and a lot more women were able to enter the workforce.

Amazing that something that simple can transform a whole country's fortune, no?

I think it's perfectly fine. What's wrong with it? It stops people from ruining their lives, in some cases. Just, in the world of today, the idea of no contraception, really sounds ridiculous.

I find that absolutely hilarious. It makes sense too. I find it odd though that the pill is avaible in Ireland, of all places. You know, because of the huge Catholic population?

In the Irish Government they have written legislation that keep matters of Church and State separate. They use secular based thoughts, not religious.

Yep, our Fifth Constitution took care of that. Which was BADLY needed, lemme tell ya.

Anyhow Rammadammadingdong, most Irish people are pretty apathetic to the Catholic dogma on contraception nowadays. And if this study is kosher, it basically spells how much it pays to tell the Catholic Church to GTFO of politics. TAKE THAT, CHURCHIE!

Are you anti-religion, WHF?

While I am religious, I am not anti-atheism.
