This is a huge blow to insurgency in Iraq. The attacks won't stop, but without a leader, at least temporarily, they will probably at least be stemmed somewhat. And those Democrats are really sending an extremely negative image out about the Democratic party, in my opinion.

It's somewhat important to note that this isn't all Democrats. (Much like "everything that comes out of Ann Coulter's lips" isn't the agenda of the Republicans.)

I know that isn't what you said, Lahi, but there are enough people around here who would like to get on your case for the slightest of reasons... I just try to keep the peace.

True enough. I should have been more specific, though I never said it's all Democrats.

And I didn't know there were people around here with a personal vendetta against me. Good to know.

Yeah, I was debating whether to start a thread myself, but I thought I'd just keep it within the "peace in the Middle East" theme.

Anyway, one thing that's surprising about this is how measured the Bush admin's response was to al-Zarqawi's death. In the past, they'd jump all over news like this to boost support for the war (like the capture of Saddam, and the killing of his sons).

But now, they seem unusually reluctant to break out the champagne. It makes you wonder - do they know something we don't, especially about Zarqawi's possible heirs?

yep, i agree. as a cynic i'm quite predisposed to doubt the positive effect i have, but that has more to do with my rotten inner core than my personal politics. and as a dem (sorta), it sucks to have people doubting the entire thing but oh well, just like the coulter thread...

Maybe they've just finally learned that war isn't like a video game. It doesn't end just because you beat the "boss".

There's nothing in the article linked to from the blog that suggests we "violated his rights" OR that they were worried he was still alive. It seems to me that any concerns they have revolve around whether he was alive or not because of the conflicting reports.
Even then, I don't know that it matters. He had 1000 pounds of high explosive fall on his house. He died.
End of story (until the second boss fight comes up, of course).

During the Cold War America used parts of the Middle East as a buffer to keep Communism out of some of the more Democratic nations further west. We supported Osama Bin-Laden when Soviet Russia was in the process of invading Afghanistan because he commanded a group of gurilla fighters that could be used to our advantage because we would then not have to send any of our own soldiers in to keep the Communists back and possibly send the spark that turns the Cold War into WWIII. We were fighting by proxy and it turns out that all of the weapons and information we gave to Bin-Laden back in the '80s turned on us in the '93 bombing of the World Trade Center and the 9/11 attacks 5 years ago.

In short: America supported Islamic extremism during the cold war because it worked as a buffer to keep Communism from making its way west. This combined with the fact that Great Britain helped by tipping off the fight over Israel makes the Middle East a screwed up part of the world and I think we're partly to blame.

In the wake of Zarqawi's death, there have been major crackdowns against the insurgency, and I think the only thing Zarqawi's successor is inheriting is a bullseye and a death warrant. All that is required for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing, and by golly we're doing something.

I'm hoping that the Iraqi police and military is up to the challenge. Sooner or later US troops will be out of there, and Iraq is gonna hafta watch its own back. From what I've heard the Iraqi forces taking a more active role in house-raids and combat, so hopefully our withdrawal from Iraq won't be overly jarring. Believe me, I want the troops back home, but not until Iraq can function on it's own (fully govern itself, police itself, educate itself, etc. ad nauseum).
