I think people are taking things that the bible says and blowing them out of proportion. Saying the lords name in vain is bad, agreed. Lords name? Jehovah or something, not god. Your Dads name isn't "Dad".

I don't know this is really mixing religion with the rules; there's already enough Xian dominance here to make people like me feel uncomfortable.

There are PLENTY of people here who are not Christian. I think most of them just aren't necessarily as vocal as some of the Christians. Hey, it's in the Bible that we're supposed to go out and spread the good news. ;)

But I digress (Toastpaint). The meaning behind the words is defintely what makes them "bad". Though I personally think that profanity shouldn't be quite the issue that it is. I agree with my mother, that it shows a lack of creativity if you're always using that "effin" word, but I confess that sometimes when I get really angry, nothing else comes to mind! Profanity is the type of thing that one shouldn't use in certain situations, but we don't have to be afraid of it. I think a person could say "CLOCK!" and if the same angry emotion was behind it as a curse word, then it's just as "bad".

I am a habitual cusser. I swear a lot. I make sailors look like schoolboys. " I am trying to change my ways especially considering the field that I am going into. I don't view swearing as being "bad. I think there is a time and place for swearing. If you say a swear word a the right time it can diffuse even the most tense situation.

It's a sign of respect for other people. I can't explain it but some people have a problem with people using "God" liberally. Hacidic Jews can't even write the word for fear of sinning, they print "G-d" in all their texts.

There is a difference between a "god" (with a lowercase g-) and "God" (with an uppercase G-). The latter is definitely a name in most contexts. But however you capitalize it, using it as an exclamation is, to many, using his name.

Incidentally, the Bible says that God has no "real" name, because he invented names in the first place. Jehovah is a transliteration of the Hebrew consonants YHVH, which literally means "to be" (or "to exist").

Holy Crap! Dot Com actually posted! It is a ChristmaHannukawzakavalidansadede miracle!
I dont mind profanity to much. As long as it doesn't insult anyone.

There is nothing wrong with swearing. the only reason it offends people is our society has decided that its bad. There is nothing in the Bible about swearing, because in essance there is no such thing

BUT! there is something about saying something like "oh my God." Not only does it say it in the Bible, but it is one of the 10 commandments that are the core of Christianity!

How else can you interperate it? It looks pretty plain and simple to me.

I don't believe it directly tells you not to say "Oh my God", therefore it is open to interpretation.

Hmm, I guess you're right. Now that I tihnk about it more I guess it is open to interpretation. Didn't think before I posted. My bad.

I don't mind profanity (as long as it isn't every other word in a sentence) but blasphemy annoys me and I never do it.

Here's a little sumpin-sumpin for you Christians who think it's okay to use profanity (excluding blasphemy) because they think the bible says nothing about it:

James 1:19-27 wrote:
19My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. 21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.

26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

There ya go. Basically, that says, to keep control of your tongue. I think it says somewhere that you shouldn't speak of filthy things, too, but I can't find that right now.

I think that this Bible verse is even more broad than just profanity. It's speaking out against hatred and anger - in thought, deed, AND word. Like I said earlier in this discussion, IMHO you could say a non-profane word but if the same anger was behind it, it'd be just as bad. But I also can't stand here and tell you I NEVER swear or use angry words - then I'd be a hypocrite.

Here's the way I look at it. No matter which name for God you use, if you're using His name as a stupid, unimportant exclamation, you're taking His name in vain. On my own site, that would be against the rules.

Declaration: Since I'm not bound to any religious faiths and their subsequent laws, I have no trouble using the word "god" in any fashion. Also, I wish that no one extends their personal faith's rules of conduct over me, or expects me to abide by such rules because they are totally irrelevant to me. However, if I do offend anyone with the usage of the word, message me or something, and we'll talk. Though you probably will never have to 'cos I don't think I usually use "god" as an interjection or exclamation or anything that would violate the "lord's name in vain" commandment.

Well, personally, it offends me. There can be apporpriate times to use that phrase, however, such as when you're actually talking to God or calling to him.

But ti kinda bugs me when non-Christians or people who don't even believe in God say it. I mean, according to their minds, he's not their God. They're only saying it in carelessness.

It's not carelessness. It's just a phrase people use. Completely harmless. And personally it makes sense to me that the Bible passages involving this might be interpreted to say that you can't lie or cheat or kill in God's name . . . Whoever posted about swearing an oath has the right idea, I think. (Sorry, too lazy to find that post, but props to you)

I don't believe in God, but I'll use any phrase I care to. It's just like 'holy crap." Do I really think somebody's crap is holy? No. "Oh my god" doesn't have any literal meaning for me, but sometimes it's the perfect phrase to express my reaction to the situation at hand.

Holy cow, Batman! We must be India!

Ya know what? In the "real world" (wherever it's hiding--whoops, I found it), you're going to be offended. There's no way around it. It's just plain and simple that way. Somewhere along the line, someone is going to say or do something that offends you. And this will happen multiple times in your life (unless your life is unfortunately very short or else you become a hermit and break all bonds with the rest of society). So what does one do about it? Does the world end? Does the universe implode everytime someone says "Oh my God!"? Well, doesn't look it does...fancy that.

I agree heavily with what was posted earlier: It's not the phrase itself that one should be offended at--it's the intent. For example, I jokingly refer to myself as a cigarette on various occassions, and there's no harm there, even though many other gay people see "Bundle of sticks" as being the "N" word for gays. Now if some brash homophobe calls me a Bundle of sticks with actual malice and ill will behind the brand, then I get offended and defend myself (perhaps with a quick blow to the offender's throat). But if I use it in jest--or even if my non-gay friends use it in jest--then there's no harm done.

I sometimes like to joke around with when people use phrases like "Oh, my God!" ("Oh, so he's YOUR God now, huh? You can't share him with everyone else?") or "Holy crap!" ("What? Did Jesus take a dump?"). Though it's not to try to get them to say something "less offensive" (because I've never sensed that the God I believe in takes offense to it's name being thrown around like that)--it's merely playing up a phrase that most people use without thinking.

So ya know what? Be offended. And deal with it. Am I being insensitive? That depends on your perception. I will say this, however: Someone already posted an ideal that they should not have Christian-dictated morals thrown upon them because they themselves are not Christian. I think that's a fair philosophy to live by. Yes, in society, we're all going to have to learn to compromise--to give and take for the good of society. But to enforce a single religious and moralistic view upon everyone else--to try to get everyone to think the same way--is not only boring: it's totalitarian.

I pretty much agree with Mikes and PMG over there.

Personally, I swear a lot. I'm not very good at expressing myself, and during times of frustration it's just easier to roll out the curses as venting than try to explain myself right away. During normal conversation I swear a lot too--more than any of my friends, really. But I'm highly irreligious as it might've been shown in some other threads, and therefore the phrase "oh my god" and different variations has never been a problem for me or my family.

I can see why you'd be offended, but I don't mind it personally and I'm not going to stop anytime soon. Cursing in general is just a reflection of natural speech, if you ask me.

I don't swear at all, if at all possible. Occasionally, like if I almost run into another guy whilst driving, something will slip out, but typically, I like to keep a civil tongue. I had a friend who used to say something to the effect of "Swearing is an IOU for intelligent conversation." That was back in middle-school, where we noticed the prevalence of swearing, especially in insults.

I'll admit that if I'm pretty ticked off or upset I tend to say things I shouldn't to myself. But I'm trying not to let myself do that anymore. While profanity is er...a personal choice whether you use it or not I personally believe it is not respectful to other people.

To me it's common sense to keep the language clean in a public place. It keeps the feel generally more comfortable and more respectful.

Just my 2 cents...

You know what's funny? A friend of mine says the same thing. She's also the person, upon hearing a person say "Having a southern accent is a reflection on your intelligence", who said "Believing that is a reflection on your's". She has a southern accent. She is a severe hottie. :-D

There are plenty of people who can have a perfectly intelligent conversation while occasionally swearing. I'm one of them. Just because somebody else doesn't think a swear word is ever the right word for a given situation doesn't mean I feel that way. If I think it's the right word, I use it. My IQ is well above average, I can program a computer in about a dozen languages, and I think I'm a decent writer with a pretty expansive vocabulary, so I don't think my choice of words can be attributed to unintelligence. There are some ways I can be about as intelligent as a doorknob, but that has more to do with lack of common sense.

I think intelligence is overrated, though. Being intelligent certainly doesn't make my life easier and sometimes I wish I were dumb. So don't think I'm bragging... far from it.
