So is mine, but having a single window maximized to fill all that space pretty much defeats the purpose of having all that screen real estate.

Oh well, we're on a new page now so it doesn't really matter.

I feel that when an unborn child is aborted, it's killed. No matter what stage of life it's in.

The only time it should be used is if there is medical risk to the mother or child. But I think it should be as a last option. If no other medical ways can be used.

And to me, it doesn't really make sence. If a mother can put give her child for adoption, why does abortion need to exist?

This point has already been made, I'm sure, but I'm continually amazed that the law in some states will consider it double murder if you kill a woman and her unborn child yet allow abortion if the mother chooses it.

Either it's a human being and it deserves protection from death or it is not.

The double standard is wrong.

I am pro-life also. I think a baby has the right to live even when unborn.

Yeah, that's always struck me as weird. We're really confused about human development as a society. There's the same problem with minors charged as adults. You're either a minor or you're not. Either charge 17 year old as a minor no matter what or lower the age of majority. Either it's a baby and a murder or not a baby and not murder.

I think it's a baby myself, but the right's approach to this problem turns me off. They seem to me to be ignoring the messy situations of human life that don't fit their (oversimplified IMO) view of society. They say all children should be carried to term, and some even would like to outlaw contraception, then when the parents can't afford the children they say "well they shouldn't have been having children then. That'll show them for being irresponsible". What? Anyone who thinks that just because people are poor they would stop doing the second most basic thing of humanity need to get an ideology that reflects some kind of reality.

But that doesn't mean people should use abortion to make the problem "go away". If we don't want abortion as a society, we need to put our money where our mouth is so we can remove the things that make people think abortion is the only way, usually money problems.

Thats true I agree that people should be able to choose what they want to do. Who are we to say what people can and cannot do with their own body?

It seems to be the goal of the Conservatives to say what we can and cannot do in a lot of details of our lives. (...Because apparently they "know better" than us.)

1. It's really up for debate whether a fetus is a woman's "own body" or not.

2. I don't see many liberals clamoring to do away with laws against drug use.

But that's the problem: abortion is not about what a woman does with her own body, but about what happens to that of her unborn child. The right to life is the most fundamental right: without it, no other right has any meaning. Yet in abortion, unborn children are denied their right to control their own bodies, as well as this fundamental right to life. So I ask you, where is justice in that?

Abortion is just about the only thing I have a firm opinion about and nothing will ever change my mind. A good friend of mine was adopted by her current parents before she was born. She has never seen her birth mother and probably never will, but she loves her so much for being strong enough to bring her into this world instead of going through an abortion. Her mom was raped and she is the product. You would never think that if you saw her unless you were told. Her mother made the right choice. I believe it should be the only choice.

I don't know about you, but even if there was no chance of me living after giving birth to my child, I would still do it as long as there was any chance of my baby surviving. If I was raped, I would put my baby up for adoption. If I made a poor decision and got pregnant, I would work my butt off for my baby. There is no excuse for abortion. Every unborn child has the right to live. I hope to adopt a child someday because of that.

So either they're 1) harming themselves on purpose by killing their children, or 2) the babies did something on their own to deserve death.

That's spam.

I just find it interesting that you all think think killing is okay in one context, but not another. Just give it the label justice and it's fine.

Dr. Lurve, at this point, you might want to review Rule Number One. You have already been warned that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated. If you're going to disagree with me, you will do so in a civilized manner.

Actually, you accusing someone of spam is like a pot calling a kettle black. You've not been here long, and you're already skating on thin ice. Watch it.

For those who are pro death penalty/anti-abortion, it's not "killing is ok in one context but not the other". It's "if you've committed crimes against your fellow man, you don't deserve to live. If your only wrong is being conceived at a time that's inconvenient to your mother, then you don't deserve to die".

There's a difference.

I'll agree, sort of, although I don't know who you're calling a "spotty teenage boy"...

Hmm.

I think all babies should have a chance to live. ABortion should only be used if it is a threat to the mother, the child, or both. But I know if I am going to have a baby, even if it was a threat to me, I'd have it anyway. Why? Because I've lived. The baby hasn't.

Abortion is an issue about which I've had some pretty mixed-up feelings, but this post pretty sums up how I would feel if I were in that position.

Though I would never condemn a woman who has had an abortion, I couldn't justify having one myself. At this stage of my life, an unplanned pregnancy would be an inconvenience - but I couldn't justify ending a potential human being's life for convenience's purpose.

Though abortion is illegal in Ireland, it's a matter of time before there's a new referendum to legalise it. And my brain says that Irish women should have the right to choose (and at the moment they're getting abortions in England anyway, so the current ban has a minimal effect). But oh man - it'll still be the most agonising vote Ill ever have to cast.

But I'd say that the real question is: Does a person have the right to end another person's life - full stop? I mean, murder is the act of killing a person who couldn't defend themselves - and execution amounts to the exact same thing. Where do you draw the moral line in that situation?

And we're not talking about warfare - because in war you'd be killing another soldier who'd kill you if they had the chance.

The difference between murder and execution is that, in the case of execution, the victim has actually done something to deserve what they receive.

That's an interesting argument. There are plenty of serial killers out there who would kill innocent people if they were free to. Why don't we just kill them? It's in defense of society, just like in war.

And if you disagree with that, let's just capture enemy soldiers and sentence them to life in prison. :)

But my question is who has the moral right to decide that such a person is to die, and who has the moral right to kill them?

Of course, I know who has the legal right to execute prisoners in the countries that practice execution - the various authorities. But what gives these authorities the moral right to perform executions over anyone else?

But wouldn't locking them up for the rest of their natural lives serve the same purpose? Why the absolute need to kill them?

I don't think the analogy to war is accurate here, because an enemy soldier would be armed and/or an immediate threat - a prisoner strapped to a hospital trolley being pumped with poisons isn't.

Okay - here's one exception....... If some lunatic stood on top of a bell tower and started shooting indiscriminately at anyone below him, then I believe that the police would be entitled to shoot him as a last resort. Why? Because those police would potentially be saving more lives than they're taking.

------
But anyhow, this isn't the right thread - I'd be willing to go over to the Death Penalty thread, if anyone wants to. But I've stated my feelings before - it'll be hard to shake me out of this stance. :)

The easy answer is that it is a matter of due process. At least here in America, there is a long process by which such heinous criminals are selected for execution. It is not an option that is taken lightly, I can assure you. But typically those who are sentenced to death are those who, by their actions, prove themselves too dangerous to exist within society.

Due process? Like paperwork and bureaucracy and that kind of carry-on? Nope, I don't think that ensures the moral right to execute a person.

We can carry on in the Death Penalty thread if you like, but toastpaint for now, I'm thinking.
