So, I'm thinking of getting in on this feed reading stuff, but I really have no idea where to begin.

From what little research I've done so far, I think I'd prefer one that will aggregate everything onto one page for me, like FeedDemon. In fact, FeedDemon looks really good, except that it's $30. I'd rather have something GPL (or at least free of charge).

I've tried Sage (a Firefox extension), but it just didn't seem very robust to me. It didn't seem any more convenient than bookmarking all my favorite blogs and visiting them myself.

So, do you know of a good feed reader? Should I go with one that is desktop-based, or web-based? What are the features you've found useful, and what should I be looking for in a good feed reader?

Well, if you use a Mac, Shrook is an amazing one. But (again for Mac users), you may just want to wait a few months/years until they release Tiger, OS 10.4. It will have an even MORE amazing RSS reader built into Safari. For people who don't use Macs... GET ONE!

I recomend Awasu or a program called Thunderbird.

For Thunderbird: You'd have to reinstall and make sure you check the RSS feed option.

Awasu: http://www.awasu.com
or Feedreader (http://www.feedreader.com/)

Whoah! I didn't know Thunderbird could read RSS! I've been using it for email for a while, but I've switched over to Gmail. (2 invites left) As for RSS, I use FeedReader. It works really well for me, plus, it has a page on SourceForge, so it must be Open Source.

I've been using Thunderbird for a while and recently read in one other place that it can do RSS. Thanks for the heads up on how to enable it.
