[edit] Image upload

Why on Earth was there a problem with the uploading of the images from my Wikipedia userpage? Booksworm 13:04, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

The problem is that every user is only allowed 2 personal images (plus a small one for their sig). That was about eight images, six more than is allowed. --DorianGray

[edit] Abusing the system

Hello again, x-Spider2. First of all: It is highly discouraged to have internal redirects on your user space. Second of all: Did you know that some of the 1.6 features like rando were disabled on Wikipedia because of user abuse? That option was designed to better articles, not desplaying random messeges on your user page. Other users have previously contacted you concerning Recent Changes flooding, showing page previews, user page editing and image uploading, and now this. Your user page is long and complicated enough as it is. While you still confirm to the guidelines, you are very close to breaking them. Please review your actions and read closely to what other advise you. As I told you before - Your knowledge of HTML and wiki-syntax can be valuable to the wiki if you will only use it on main space articles. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 09:51, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry about the subpage, but it just seems a waste to only be using the random syntax for Homsar Quote. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 05:13, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
HomsarQuotes was built before that was available, actually. But you're missing the point. The point is to get out of your user space. This isn't a webhosting service. Besides that, nobody is ever going pay attention to anyone else's user page to the extent that you're putting effort into yours, so all the time you're pumping into it could be spent making the rest of the wiki better, never mind the fact that pages on this wiki should ideally be designed to look good (or at least passable) on any browser using any resolution. I don't know many who use a resolution as large as your recommendation, and not for lack of trying.It's dot com 05:20, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I originally misread the numbers on the recommended resolution. Still, it's considered poor form to design to a particular browser and screen size. — It's dot com 05:23, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree - you cannot know what combination of font size, screen resolution and other factors the user's browser is set to use, so designing for a specific size, as if you were doing a graphic layout on a piece of paper, has long been viewed by web authors as "A Dumb Thing To Do." Incidentally, I run the resolution you are requesting, and the page looks like a cluttered mess. (And, btw, my browser of choice, Opera, cannot be used to post to your talk because my entire computer froze twice trying to. Firefox seems to work so far, but I'm saving a lot just in case.)
But there's another point of "abuse of the system" I'd like to broach with you. I counted your user space edits in the last 100 edits and came up with 87. I looked at random other 100-edit spans and came up with similar results. Long story short - you are spending an inordinate amount of time on your userspace. I'd append "in my opinion", but this has gotten beyond opinion, clearly. According to HRWiki:User space the purpose of the userspace is "to facilitate communication among participants in the project" but with 2 of the last 100 edits (and similar numbers elsewhere) in the main namespace (the 2 Coach Z edits) this can hardly be called "participation".
I'm "being bold" here; I'm not a sysop and therefore can't make you do anything. I really, really hope to convince you, however, to spend less time on your userspace and more in the main namespace. Are you here to make a cool userpage, or to help build a wiki of many, many pages? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 01:48, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Currently you have all of these subpages to your user space:

 1. User:X-Spider2/Header - doesn't work in any skin except Monobook, in TaviStyle it hides the title and the logo, and in Cologne Blue it hides several important links in the top right. And it's a CSS hack, and only serves to confuse people who expect to see the page title there.
 2. User:X-Spider2/X-Sigger2 - Your sig. No problems there.
 3. User:X-Spider2/alternuser - Doesn't seem to be used anywhere, and would be rather pointless if it was.
 4. User:X-Spider2/helscome
 5. User:X-Spider2/monobook.css
 6. User:X-Spider2/monobook.js
 7. User:X-Spider2/nav - I don't see the need for this. Once again, it only works in Monobook - in TaviStyle or Cologne Blue it is completely invisible (above the top of the page). It leeches the images off Wikipedia, and while I can't find anything in their policies about hotlinking, it is bad form to do so, and you should assume unless told otherwise that it isn't allowed. That is unless you have permission from the Wikipedia admins to use those images here, with their bandwidth. It doesn't link to anything I can't either access quickly with the links already avaliable (Your user page, talk page, contribs, email link) or won't want to access regularly enough to warrant a special link (your sig, custom CSS/JS, userbox tower). Finally (and minorly), the icon you have for JavaScript is actually a Java icon, which has nothing to do with JavaScript.
 8. User:X-Spider2/rando - Unused and pointless.
 9. User:X-Spider2/rando/links - Unneccessary use of #rand, why would you ever need a link to a random page in your user space? Clearly rarely, as it is unused (other than in /rando, which is unused)
 10. User:X-Spider2/talkarchive1
 11. User:X-Spider2/talkarchive2
 12. User:X-Spider2/tower - this is split into many sub-pages - why?
 13. User:X-Spider2/tower babel
 14. User:X-Spider2/tower hrw
 15. User:X-Spider2/tower top - this one in particular baffles me - if you have so many userboxes that your tower needs a TOC... maybe you're overdoing it?
 16. User:X-Spider2/tower wp
 17. User:X-Spider2/welcome - A redirect to /helscome - still there only because it is being included on user pages... Speaking of which, why included? Why not subst:ed? A new user clicking "Edit" and seeing a template is likely to either be confused if they don't understand the templates (and wonder where the message is coming from) or feel less welcomed... there's just something impersonal about rubber-stamping a template on a user space.

Counting your user page and your talk page, that's 19 pages in your user space. That could easily be cut down to 9: user page, talk, 2 archives, custom CSS/JS, sig, welcome and tower. The policies for user-space subpages say in particular to "not use component (nested) pages for content that could just as easily go on your main page." We haven't been enforcing this on userbox towers, mostly because we're not certain as to whether they are in general a "good idea" or not - they do get a lot of code off of the main user page, which can be useful. That doesn't, however, give you free reign to make lots of unneccessary pages (like /nav, /Header, /table_*...) which are simple, and could easily be put directly on your user page. You've been doing a lot of userpage edits, as has been pointed out by others... and the content of many of your edits show that you clearly understand how it all works. Why not leave your user space alone for a while, and focus that energy and knowledge on something else, and try make the wiki a better place? --phlip TC 13:45, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Fine, when I've sorted out my space properly, you can delete the unnecessary ones. —Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 23:17, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Could ya maybe put Unneeded subpage or something similar on them, so we know which ones to delete (and which ones not to)? It's very helpful... --DorianGray

[edit] Link advice

I've noticed you gave some advice to two people (one is Homsarroks) about linking. Actually, all you really have type <div class= "plainlinks"> to remove the box. But what I don't understand is why you even felt like giving the advice. See, it reminds me of Christmas when I was younger, because we were making Christmas cookies, and I loved doing it so much that all I did was give nonstop, almost forceful advice on how my brother's cookies should like. You're not being forceful in this situation, but I can tell you can relate to that. Why bother give the advice? It's their userpage, and I would think they would know. If they don't, well, still, why bother? I did read the above section, so I realize you have some userpage-itis (XD). If you really want to edit userpage stuff, then you can, but keep it to your own. — Seriously (Talk) 14:09, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Editor.js

Any reason why you're creating that? 'Cause editor isn't a skin...— Seriously (Talk) 03:23, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Fine, I'll use Wikipedia:User:Cacycle/editor.js, then you can delete User:X-Spider2/editor.js. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 03:32, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
I wasn't saying you should delete it. I was just wondering what it's for. :) — Seriously (Talk) 03:34, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
It's a script I found on Wikipedia that adds extra features to the edit page. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 04:11, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
It's a greasemonkey script, right? 'Cause if it is, I can't use it. >:( Oh well. — Seriously (Talk) 04:13, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Actually, it can be used without Greasemonkey. Just put this code in your JS (go to your real JS instead, if you're not using Monobook):
// install User:X-Spider2/editor.js editor code
document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
+ 'http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=User:X-Spider2/editor.js'
+ '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');
--Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 04:19, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Dude, you rock so much. Thanks a huge bunch. I'll love this, I'm betting. I'ma use it at the fanstuff, though. — Seriously (Talk) 04:23, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Wow, this is awesome. Thanks for suggesting it; I absolutely LOVE it. — Seriously (Talk) 04:29, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
No problo, Elizagerth. Besides, it's set to use the URL here, so, in fact, it'll work on any wiki you're registered on. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 04:30, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh, snap! That's so convenient, it's like, unpossible! Wait, what? But I really do like the changes here. One question, though: What does regexp mean? — Seriously (Talk) 04:39, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Dunno. Might say at Wikipedia:User:Cacycle/editor. (I mirrored the script from Wikipedia:User:Cacycle/editor.js.) --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 04:43, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Oooh, I forgot to mirror Wikipedia:User:Cacycle/diff.js and Wikipedia:User:Pilaf/livepreview.js. I'll do that now. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 04:47, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Mirrored Wikipedia:User:Cacycle/diff.js, but to use Wikipedia:User:Pilaf/livepreview.js, you'll have to use the install code for Wikipedia:User:Pilaf/livepreview.js. To install User:X-Spider2/diff.js:
// install User:X-Spider2/diff.js editor code
document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
+ 'http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=User:X-Spider2/diff.js'
+ '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');
And to install Wikipedia:User:Pilaf/livepreview.js:
// Include Live Preview...
document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Pilaf/livepreview.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');

// Now set everything up
window.onload = Main;

function Main()
{
LivePreviewInstall();
// You may include here other "extensions"
}

That's pretty awesome too. Thanks. — Seriously (Talk) 14:24, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

No problo, Elizagerth. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 06:02, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Soft Redirect

X-Spider2, your use of the template soft redirect is not its intended use. The intended use is for redirecting pages with InterWiki links, when they would otherwise be redirected with #Redirect Link. If you wish to use the template in this way, please substitute the code and remove the category. — Lapper (talk) 06:53, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
