Seethroo with some questions

Heya, Tom. Do you ever check this thing? What's goin' on with the Wiki? It seems to be going nuts. ~ AgentSeethroo

Yes, I do. And yeah, it's under some strain right now. Crazy. -- Tom 17:51, 2 Aug 2004 (MST)

Cool, cool. I'm gonna be able to help move stuff tonight. AgentSeethroo

Sweet. I appreciate it. -- Tom 18:41, 3 Aug 2004 (MST)

Hey, is there any particular reason I CANNOT get onto Recent Changes on the oldschool wiki? It's seriously gettin' on my nerves. -- AgentSeethroo 14:03, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)

I'm guessing it's just the mySQL overload we've been experiencing. Yeah, bummer. -- Tom 14:05, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)

Woah. I added a pantload...but there are still some organizational things that need to be hammered out...I guess check the comments I made in various places...I'm tired... -- AgentSeethroo 23:11, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)

HOLY CRAP! Who're all those people blocked from this wiki??? I didn't know you were doin' that much blocking already! - AgentSeethroo 15:34, 11 Aug 2004 (MST)

Yeah, those are open proxies. You can see the note here and Joey's and my discussion of the topic here. -- Tom 15:47, 11 Aug 2004 (MST)

I wanted to do that for old times sake. Anyway, I kinda discovered something to make transferring things much easier. If you take the code from 'Tavi pages, put em in Word, and then do a ctrl-f, you can have it replace all the parentheses with brackets. Doing things that way, I can get all my links straightened out before I even put the text in MediaWiki. Just sharing... -- AgentSeethroo 15:44, 12 Aug 2004 (MST)

Yeah, I do the same thing, except I use TextPad. It helps a bunch. Mostly. Just have to be a little careful. -- Tom 15:48, 12 Aug 2004 (MST)
How're all my edits and transfers? Is there something wrong that I'm doing that I need to be aware of? (did I just say "doing"? -- AgentSeethroo 15:54, 12 Aug 2004 (MST)
You, my friend, are doing a great job. You're really keeping things moving along. Keep up the good work. I'm seriously thinking you are the man right about now. -- Tom 17:24, 12 Aug 2004 (MST)

Note from Firebird

Just wanted to say thanks for all the work put into the move. Great Job! -- FireBird

You're welcome. -- Tom 18:08, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

Redirects

Tom: I'm seeing some deletion of redirect pages on the deletion log. It looks like most of those pages will not be missed, but it does help to have some "common" misspelling articles redirect to the proper article. This is not for sloppy linking , as no pages SHOULD link to a redirect page. This is for people who come to the site, punch in a name into the search box and are taken to the correct page.

There is always some debate over what constitutes a common misspelling. I created a redirect from Whats her face to What's her face. This seems useful to me. Let me know what you think about this. Drhaggis 15:42, 15 Sep 2004 (MST)

I agree. The ones I've been trying to catch are old links that were not fixed correctly during the move. Things like "MainPage 10" that were used instead of "Main Page 10" becuase of CamelCase on 'Tavi. The person who created that redirect then went ahead and created one for "MainPage 11", even though nothing linked there. I don't see the need for 21 pages to be created like this. Another example is "sbemail1" and its companions. There isn't a need for that.
Of course, you also have to remember that we turned on case-sensitivity. That means that "What's Her Face" and "What's her Face" are also two completely different pages. I'd rather that a link show up in red and someone pick up on their mistake right away then have them continue to make links to redirect pages. But I suppose it would be very hard to keep a lid on things like this once we get going. -- Tom 15:55, 15 Sep 2004 (MST)
Oh, Contraire! I have often wanted to be able to quickly type "sbemailxx" into the search box to find something quickly. I agree that old camel case links should be removed, but I see nothing wrong with shortcut redirects for the lazy. (I was actually thinking of adding these the other day, then stumbled across this thread. Sorry I'm a little late joining the discussion.) :) wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 22:37, 25 Oct 2004 (MST)
I totally agree JoeyDay. I too have wished to quickly type the sbemailxx when I am watching a new toon instead of hving to search the Strong Bad Emails by Name page.--38.112.87.6 12:44, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
Uh, this conversation happened over six and a half months ago. Thanks for your input, but this really isn't relevant anymore. -- Tom 00:54, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

Thank God that you made it, Tom! Thank God! -Maudi Algabban

I agree! -- Tom 18:08, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

Hey, Tom! Have you listened to "Dragostea din tei" with Haiducii or O-Zone? They're from Romania. -Maudi --193.150.221.247 16:28, 19 Sep 2004 (MST)

Sorry, I have to admit that I still haven't. Have you made a userpage yet? Heh heh. But seriously, I know there's some stuff that needs to be attributed to you by being on your userpage. -- Tom 18:08, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

Note

Oh geez, man, it looks like I disambiguated a page you deleted. Took too long doing it, I guess. I'm really sorry about that. --TheNintenGenius 19:40, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

No problem, I can just re-delete it. And I appreciate you leaving this note. It makes me feel good. -- Tom 19:41, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

Oh Man

{In reply to a comment from User_talk:Thunderbird_L17}

All that work... I'm really sorry. I was trying to figure out why all my pics looked slightly off. Oh well. I've switched over now. I just wish I hadn't deleted them as I went along... Oh well. I think I'm still doing ok for only being here about a week. Again, my apolagies. And they'll all be PNG from now on. Btw, if you could provide me with a list of the JPG pictures I uploaded, I could replace them in my spare time. Thanks.

-Thunderbird

Hey, no problem. Here's a good place to get started. Then there's always the Image List. I think that might work best. And I can come up with a better list if you need it. And I'm glad you can see the difference. -- Tom 04:03, 21 Sep 2004 (MST)

UPDATE:

Topic Complete.

All of my uploaded JPG files are now PNG. Took a bit of doing, but it's done.

Sebastian Coe

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_Coe
He first ran against Ovett in Prague in 1978 in an 800 meter race that neither won. The next year in Oslo, Norway, Coe set his first world records (in the 800-meter and mile races). One of the most famous races between Ovett and Coe was in the 1980 Olympic Games in the 1500-meters. Coe won in Olympic Record time.

Further References

From http://www.geocities.com/hotsprings/3257/coe.html
He beat Ovett's mile record, running it in 3 min 48.53 sec on August 19; only a week later Ovett set another mile record, which was then shattered by Coe with a 3 min 47.33 sec run on August 28.

Here are some of his times in the mile:
mile 3'48''95 1979 Wr (Oslo)
mile 3'48''53 1981 Wr (Zurich)
mile 3'47''33 1981 Wr (Bruxelles)
Note: Wr stands for World Record.

One final reference: http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/World%20record%20progression%20for%20the%20mile%20run

And a quote from you;

"Hmm. [Coe] didn't really run the mile. And he never had the world record."

Could you please cite your references?? As far as I can tell, he not only ran the mile, he also held the world record on three seperate occasions.~Hobo

Um, my bad. But you did notice that I changed my edit after that edit you quoted me on, right? And that I was being particularly ambigious in my wording? Anyway, you are right. No hard feelings. Thank you. -- Tom 19:13, 22 Sep 2004 (MST)
So, were you gonna change it back then? ~Hobo
Done. -- Tom 09:13, 23 Sep 2004 (MST)
Thanks ~Hobo

Idea

How about desktop background downloads for the wiki? Anyone who wanted to create one could, then e-mail one of the admins the image. Then the admin, if approved, could upload it into the wiki images. It's just an idea, but I like the sound of it. I'd love to have an HRwiki background. -- FireBird

Hmm. I don't think so. The problem is this, the Wiki is just for information. If you want to make something on your own and then have it somewhere that you could link to from your userpage, that would be better. See, we kind of tread on this uneasy ground with copyrights and the like. Not only that, but there's also the content issue. I know a background that you would make would most likely be good and wholesome for the Wiki and for Homestar Runner, but I wouldn't want to encourage other not-as-good backgrounds to be made. You are always free to make your own backgrounds, keep them to yourself, use them on your computer, and do what ever you want with them.
As of right now, I'll say this: I don't think you will ever have an official Homestar Runner Wiki background. But I'll ask around and see what I can do. -- Tom 19:43, 22 Sep 2004 (MST)
That's fine with me. -- FireBird

Floppy Disks

Since you apparently look after the floppy disk section mostly, I figured you would be the best person to ask. How do you feel about a picture of the floppy disk container and it's label beside every listing of it in the inside jokes section? I would be happy to complete that undertaking if you approve. Also, is there anywhere else I could add some pictures? I'm finished the rejects section.

-Thunderbird_L17

Floppy Disk Container/StrongBadEmailDiskLabels. Check it out. The problem is this: the Wiki is text-based, and information provided through text makes things much easier to search and quicker to load. I'm not really sure that having a screenshot of every different one is needed. Why would it need to be seen by the viewer? Could they simply watch the toon or email instead? One thing that really needs to be done regarding The Container is having the links to the page standardized. Every Fun Facts section on every email and toon that has The Container in it should link to the Floppy Disk Container page in a uniform way. You could get started on that, if you want. And then there's what the disks actually reference. There's a subpage of the Old Wiki page on that needs to be copied over and gone through with a fine-tooth comb.
Regarding the images, you kind of need to convince me why they are actually needed. Thanks for asking though, this has really gotten me thinking. -- Tom 19:31, 22 Sep 2004 (MST)

Well since you already have the list of where the disk case occurs, it should be easy to find the toons to put the link in. I'll get on it later. As far as the floppy images go, I don't think they're NEEDED per-say, but I think it would be kinda cool. It lets people really VISUALIZE the floppys. They would be really small pics too, not full screen. But if you don't want them I won't put them there. As for other pics though, I have been kind of going through the sites putting pictures on everything, if you don't like any of them, feel free to take them off. I just think that any character, object, or place does need a picture to really visualize what the afforementioned thing is. Most of the pages I did only have one or two pics, with the exceptions of The King of Town's Castle place page, and the Tandy_400 computer page. I kinda may have gone overboard on those ones. Look 'em over and decide. The Monkey_D's page also have a few. If you don't like them you can fix them how you see fit. But the widescreen pic in Strong_Bad's_Basement, I'm really proud of that pic. It took me awhile. -- Thunderbird L17 22:24, 22 Sep 2004 (PST)

Those four pages that you linked to are good. And that basement image is especially good. In some places, it borders on the line of being to much, but I think you played it well. They also could use some small tweaks, but that will all come in good time. As for The Floppies, I think you can make a seperate section on the page for the images and organize them in a table. I actually have all the images, and I can upload them later if you want to use them. (I use them for my avatar on the forum.) What do you think of that? -- Tom 09:11, 23 Sep 2004 (MST)

Okay, it's up and running..ish. Access it from the regular floppy list. If you have the images, feel free to upload them. Any that you don't have, or don't feel like uploading, I can them. Just upload what you want, and I'll do the rest. Oh, and how do you feel about the naming of images in the Floppy_*name_of_e-mail*.PNG uniformity? You can name then however you want, but I think there should be some form of uniformity in naming the image files. Just tell me if this is okay, and if you're done uploading the images you want. Also, they should all be fullscreen screenshots, right?

Thunderbird L17 11:10, 27 Sep 2004 (PST)

Alrightie. Update on the floppy disk container. I've been slowly working away at the Floppy disk container with screenshots page, no help needed there, but as I do so I realized another thing missing from the floppy disk container section, and an actual USEFUL thing, is a breif description and history of the games listed on the floppy disk containers. So that being said, I'm also plugging away at that in my little corner of the floppy disk page. If you would like the commentaries on the main floppy disk page too, which I think would be useful, please let me know so that I can add them to both pages as I go along. No rush though, it'll probably be a few weeks before I'm finished researching them and all. Let me know if you think this would be an improvement to the floppy disk page though. Generally I don't ask permission for editing things, but since you're the senior and keeper of the floppy disk container, I thought it was only fair to ask you. So what are your thoughts?

Thunderbird L17 9:45, 6 Oct 2004 (PST)

I do like the information on what the labels mean, and I wouldn't really call them commentaries. They are all pretty clear cut. Let's see how big they get and then play it from there. Keep them on that screenshot page for now, I don't want to violate HRWiki:Once And Only Once. -- Tom 18:44, 7 Oct 2004 (MST)

Hiho. I've run into a roadblock doing the pics. In the e-mail 'lackey', how did you read, let alone get a picture, of the CD case? It's off the screen! Please let me know, or if you have the pic, simply save it as Floppy_lackey.PNG . Please let me know either way whenever. Thanks.

-Thunderbird L17 10:37, 11 Oct 2004 (PST)

I used a program called Flash Decompiler. It's a free download, so you might want to give it a try. Though I wasn't able to export the actual image, I was able to read the text. But you might have better luck than I did. -- Tom 15:41, 11 Oct 2004 (MST)

Sorry, I don't like treating you like an FAQ, I just have ONE last question. (Probably)... I have the program, but how do you get the file onto it? It seems like you can only decompile files on your harddrive. Is this so? If it is, how do you get a flash file (SB E-mail Lackey) onto your hard drive? If it isn't, how do you get it from the interent? Last question, probably. I promise. Likely.

-Thunderbird L17 7:33, 13 Oct 2004 (PST)

Down the bottom of each toon's or email's page, there's a link for the flash file. Just right click and choose "Save Link As..." or your browser's equivalent. -- Tom 15:57, 14 Oct 2004 (MST)

Thanks, I got it. What do you think of my floppy for Lackey? It's the best I could do... Anyways, I wanted to ask you about the once and only once policy. Though I agree that it's a good policy, I think that the 'see above' thing destroys the look of the summaries, especially once they are all finished. Plus, 'Manhunter New York' appeared in an e-mail at the top, then a toon way at the bottom. So it would be kind of hard to just say 'see above'. Plus since the picture is repeated, why not the explanation? You are the moderater, and whatever you decide I'll abide by, but in this case, since it's only for about 4 floppies, a number that's not likely to be increased, could I just repeat the explanations?

-Thunderbird L17 6:28, 15 Oct 2004 (PST)

You know, I do like the idea of having the information on both. Let's try using a tempate instead. Do you think that will work? -- Tom 18:33, 15 Oct 2004 (MST)

Template? I don't know much about website formating or whatnot. Basically everything I do on the Wiki I learn by looking at how somebody else wrote a code, and then copying that pattern. But if you think the template or whatever will work, go ahead. You were right about floating the pictures to the left, making it into tables, all that kind of thing. Just do what you want, and if I disagree I can always revert. But overall I'm happy with what you do. Does this mean that I can put the repeat explanations on the few pictures though, instead of 'see above'?

-Thunderbird L17 23:49, 15 Oct 2004 (PST)

Okay, here's what I did. I created Template:tongue of the fatman, Template:lode runner, and Template:manhunter new york. Check out the page to see if you like it. Now, there's only one place you need to go in order to change the content that will show up for both floppies. -- Tom 07:41, 16 Oct 2004 (MST)

Okay, that works. I don't really plan on editing them much anyways anymore, once the summary is there. But it looks exactly the same, so it's fine. Btw, I fixed the out of place 3.5 inch disk summary, I found a place for it where it fits nicely. Now nothing has two explanations, and the 5.25 inch disks don't have the same summary twice. (See Second 5.25 Inch Disk Summmary)

-Thunderbird L17 9:09, 16 Oct 2004 (PST)

Very good. Well done. -- Tom 09:10, 16 Oct 2004 (MST)

Hey, can you do the same to Cave Quest (100th e-mail) that you did to Shogun? I can't get it the right size without it pixelating...

-Thunderbird L17 18:33, 17 Oct 2004 (PST)

Heh heh. I already did. You can revert back to my image from here if you like. -- Tom 18:42, 17 Oct 2004 (MST)

Hey Tom, I thought JPG format was to be used for videos and pictures, and PNG for all flash material. Plus I think the JPG looked clearer and brighter. If you really don't want it there, then I'll try another way, but I thought I read somewhere that JPG was preferable for pictures, just not for flash. Is the one JPG really that bad? Please clarify. Thanks.

Thunderbird 06:30, 25 Oct 2004 (MST)

Ah ha. There's a little catch here though. We are talking about a screenshot of a movie or image, and not the actual image itself. Screenshots should always be PNGs. The only kinds of JPGs we should have are photos like Image:TheBrothersChapsBandW.jpg or Image:mattchapman.jpg. Perhaps an screenshot like Image:puppetdween.png better illustrates what I'm trying to say. -- Tom 08:35, 25 Oct 2004 (MST)

Okay, I getcha. Then I guess I'll just put it back on the old PNG one for now. Thanks. I guess if anything, it adds diversity...

Thunderbird 19:08, 25 Oct 2004 (MST)

Alright, I think it's finally done. I have one more little task though that I can't complete on my own. The three templates, Template:manhunter_new_york , Template:lode_runner , and Template:tongue_of_the_fatman are now unneeded, and as such should be deleted, right? I can't figure out how to. If you know of a way, be my guest. Or should they just be left peacefully, until the end of time? -- Thunderbird 09:40, 1 Nov 2004 (MST)

Sorry, I was just going to get breakfast when I finished my summary, and when I finished it I realized there was a stored version that wasn't there when I started. I didn't have time to merge them so I just uploaded mine, and I was going to merge them when I got the chance, which is now. I did notice the picture though, and already put it up. Sorry about that, I don't want to offend anyone. I'm going to merge them right now. I just figured if I put mine in quickly yours is still stored as a past edit, so that way they're both there if needed. -- Thunderbird 12:21, 15 Nov 2004 (MST)

Actually, I never thought about NPOV. While I was doing all this, I used reviews as sources, it's easier to just take the opinions of the writers and condence them. But I think that meathod has given the summaries a multi purpose, to now give you a bit of background about the game for curiosity's sake, but also as a type of mini review, for those who are deciding whether or not to find and play them. It gives the summaries a critical and reviewish type feel. Now to go back and do them all NPOV'D would take some doing, and in my opinion I don't think would be as enjoyable to read. What do you think? Side Note: Since they replaced the 5.25's along with the Tandy, do you think they might replace the 2.5's with CD's along with the comp? UPDATE EDIT: No they didn't, but on Main Page 22 it reveals The Cheat's computer has them. I dunno, just a curious little observation.

--Thunderbird 15:05, 15 Nov 2004 (MST)

I figured since I already started a conversation thread here, I'd ask this under the same topic. Do you have a DVD player built into your computer? Basically the reason is that I need the pics of the Floppy Disk Containers from the DVD Main Menus for the Floppy Disk Container page. If it's got Puppet Time Version, it stands to reason that DVD version would be acceptable as well. I do have the DVD set, but no way of getting screens. (Prefferably 150px or larger). Thanks in advance, [[User:Thunderbird L17|⇔Thunderbird⇔]] 15:18, 7 Mar 2005 (MST)

Okay. I do have a DVD player for my computer. But what screenshots do you need? -- Tom 10:10, 9 Mar 2005 (MST)

The screens of the Floppy disk Containers on the Main Menus (the CG'd ones) from the DVDS. The Paper did get them, but they decidedly leave something to be desired, and we're hoping you can do better. Hopefully Zoomed and what not. Also, the last Floppy Disk container couldn't be identified, it seems as though it's cut off by the camera. Check the Floppy Disk Container, it's got the base of what I'm looking for there. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks alot. [[User:Thunderbird L17|⇔Thunderbird⇔]] 17:58, 9 Mar 2005 (MST)

Okay, I'll see what I can do. -- Tom 08:32, 10 Mar 2005 (MST)

Rollbacks

Exactly how do you roll a page back to its previous version? I've attempted to do this in the past, and I still haven't figured out how. --TheNintenGenius 19:28, 30 Sep 2004 (MST)

A very good question. I just fixed up the instructions on the WikiTroll page yesterday. Check 'em out. -- Tom 19:32, 30 Sep 2004 (MST)

First time Here? on Log in

Is there anyway to link to the about page on a log in page? It seems that people don't read that page, and it might help new users who log in? Do you agree? -- FireBird

Hmm, that's a pretty good idea. I'll look into that. But what might even be better is if we had some sort of welcoming committee. Would you want to be in charge or something like that? -- Tom 18:55, 7 Oct 2004 (MST)
I think it would be great if we had a welcoming committee (and I wouldn't mind being in charge). -- FireBird
Fantastic, I'm happy to hear it. Just look over what Wikipedia does. We don't need all that stuff, but I'm sure you'll find a way to adapt it for us. -- Tom 19:50, 7 Oct 2004 (MST)
Should I make a page for our own little welcome committee? -- FireBird
Yeah, Hrwiki:Welcoming committee should work nicely. You're in charge, buddy. -- Tom 19:58, 7 Oct 2004 (MST)

SB Email categories

I moved the Category: Strong Bad Email as a sub-category of Category: Strong Bad Filmography. All the emails were in both categories when technically all SB Emails are part of his filmography by default. It cleans up the Strong Bad filmography nicely and keeps the all the emails grouped together. There is only one email that SB is not in, but due to this arrangement will still be included in his filmography, but taking the IMDB as a guide, if someone guest hosts the "Late Show with David Letterman" it is called "Late Show Backstage", but it still shows up on Dave’s filmography. - Drhaggis 09:01, 12 Oct 2004 (MST)

Personally I don't think this really makes sense. An email that Strong Bad is not in should not be in his Filmography, despite what IMDb does. — InterruptorJones[[]]
I agree. -- FireBird
I also found it a bit confusing. Strong Bad, Homestar, and Marzipan are in all of Marzipan's Answering Machines, but I don't think that should be a sub-category of any one of their filmographies. I think it would not be confusing to have every email be directly in Strong Bad's Filmography, except anything, just how it was. It would also be less confusing for someone just looking at any email and thinking to themselves, "Oh, this one isn't listed in Strong Bad's Filmography", since it does not show up directly on the page as it is now with the subcategory. That's really what it comes down to, that Category: Strong Bad Filmography does not show up on the emails. Oh, and the "anything" thing too. -- Tom 11:56, 12 Oct 2004 (MST)
Funny, the IMDB is a suitable guide to determine the precedent for a voice over. To me the Filmography categories are proving to be more trouble then they are worth and a misapplication of the original intent of the category structure. I understand wanting an automatically generated list for the 12 main characters that show up in everything, but it seems from all the other character pages that the Wiki users are more than capable of manually tracking the appearances of even the most obscure psudo-characters.

The stucture:

Character->Filmography->Strong Bad Filmography->Strong Bad Email
makes a lot of sence to me. SB is in all but one email, which can be explained by a note. If having 100+ emails cluttering the SB filmography and being unnessicarily duplicated in the email list and in the email category doesnt bother you, then it wont bother me.
I guess I should get going on Category: Biscuit Dough Hands Man Filmography while I'm at it. - Drhaggis 12:15, 12 Oct 2004 (MST)
Your presentation just now does make a bit of sense. I'll have to see what others think. Though on that other issue, as I understood it, the filmography categories were never supposed to be extended beyond the 12 main characters. Somewhere along the line, this was not explained well enough and the whole thing took off. I think there's over fifty filmographies now. I'd be happy to draw a line somewhere. Subpages are useful, but only for the right kinds of stuff, like adding an archive to a cluttered talk page, or some temporary user space separate from the rest of your user space for, say, a rewrite of a page. - [[User:furrykef|furrykef (Talk at me)]] 09:56, 21 Nov 2004 (MST)

Who's In Charge Of The Main Page Anyways?

Hiho. I'm not getting much of a response on the Main Talk Page, so I figured I'd go straight to the source, assuming that the source(s) are moderators. Anyways, here's my question. Who's in charge of the Main Page, not so much the look of it, I don't really care about that, but moreso the organization of the links to pages. Now I'm no moderator, but I was curious as to why the links are organized the way they are. Why are Inside Jokes part of Wiki Stuff, Yet Songs part of Knowledge Base? I've been thinking about the layout, and I belive I've figued out a good way of sortage, and am hoping for either a yes or a no. Either one, as long as I can maybe get some kind of explanation as to why they're sorted the way they are, should the answer be a no. Anyhoo, without further ado, I give you my sorting idea...

Basically it consists of the Knowledge Base containing ONLY the things listed on the H*R main page(s), and putting everything left over into Wiki Stuff. It would look something like this, and would have the added bonus of evening the two sections out, leaving External Links on the bottom...

(The Knowledge Base Stuff)

Then this to the right of it: (Perhaps the first part even in an additional section?)

(Perhaps another section here?)

Then the external links in another catergory. Is there any problem with this layout? The idea behind it is that the first section are your main ingrediants, and the second one is things that you can make out of them. I just belive that things such as Rejects and Inside Jokes should be in the same catergory as things such as songs and items. Any answer to this would be much appreciated, and then I'll shut up about it. Thanks alot Tom. -- Thunderbird 02:33, 20 Nov 2004 (MST)

I'm not really sure. Your line of thinking makes sense, however I'm thinking it is our system of classification that really seems to be the issue. Inside Jokes? Rejects? What the heck are those really? Things need to be clearly defined and a system needs to be implimentated to classify things. -- Tom 13:57, 21 Nov 2004 (MST)

Hmmm... Thats a good point. Okay, well at least keep my organizational idea in mind as you go about implementing the changes. And with that, I withdraw from the Main Page arguments and leave it in the rest of the Wiki's capable hands. -- Thunderbird 16:29, 21 Nov 2004 (MST)

STUFF and Fun Facts

As you may have read I have an issue with the STUFF page. I am very glad someone has spearheaded an attempt to control the "fun fact" problem, but I still think that the voting and discussion for disputed Fun Facts should be made on the article's talk page and not on the STUFF page.

If a controversial article like Wikipedia:History of Israel can exist on the Wikipedia by using the Talk page and without resorting to a common page voting system, I think the Homestar Wiki article virus can too.

Now that we have people's attention with the STUFF page I suggest that we move content discussion back to the Talk pages where they belong.

I have created a preliminary template:disputed

It reads as follows:This article contains Disputed Fun Facts

This could be used to let contributors know that there is a dispute, and to direct them to the talk page. The Disputed Fun Facts link should go to a page with the info that furrykef wrote on what is and is-not a good fun fact.

People were not using the talk pages effectively in the past, which is a failure of us the users, not of the talk pages.

-[[User:Drhaggis|Dr Haggis]] 16:35, 26 Nov 2004 (MST)

I completely agree that talk pages are not effectively used by our users. I did read your comment on the talk page and did like some parts of it.
You mentioned there that the popularity of the "Stuff" page is typical of a sloppy discussion forum and not an article based reference guide. I indeed was amazed at all the users who were very interested in voting. It appears that a quick vote and comment is much easier than proposing fixes and improvements.
You also presented the idea that this problem inherent mostly because the Homestar Runner Universe is finite. I completely agree. I also believe this is why some users, instead of improving on articles that already exist, create very small articles for very fringe elements of said universe. While I don't think that the Stool article may be one of these, I'm not entirely interested in proposing other examples at this time.
While this may not be the time or place to discuss your other comment on that talk page about proper classification, I believe it would be important to address that issue with whichever system is accepted for the dealing with fun facts.
As Kef noted in his reply to your comment, the STUFF process was loosely based on Wikipedia's Votes for Deletion process. I do like Wikipedia's VfD process and have participated in it in the past, but as you may notice we don't have a system like this for dealing with the deletion of pages because we are so small. It works for Wikipedia but would simply would not work for us.
Throughout my travels around Wikipedia, I have seen several pages with notices like the one on the Wikipedia:History of Israel page. While I don't believe the scale of discussions here will every reach such a level as that, I am willing to investigate the possibility of using such a system.
If we were to adopt your proposal, I would want some sort of centrally located instruction page. As you mention, this could contain some of Kef's rules from the STUFF page. I'd also want it to list all the pages that are currently going through the process.
Of course, your proposal is in direct conflict with the current STUFF system, which the users seems to have latched on to. I like your proposal, but I'm interested in hearing how you would implement it given the current circumstances.
Thank you for being bold enough to propose an alternative.

Poor Images

[In reply to a comment on User_talk:Fhqwhgadshgnsdbkhsdabkfabkveybvf]

Yeah, hi. You asked how I made those pictures? Well, I have a screenshot program that only makes Jpegs (which I later save as PNG's), so you can see why the quality would be poor. 'Cause, you know, Jpegs are poor quality. Oh, and I like how you are constanly using WikiPedia links. ---Fhqwhgadshgnsdbkhsdabkfabkveybvf 22:58, 23 Dec 2004 (MST)

Yeah, Wikipedia links are great. I'm curious as to what "screenshot program" you use. What operating system are you running? I know Windows captures raw image files to the clipboard with a simple push of the "print screen" key. These can be used in any image editing program, like the free the GIMP. They turn out much better than other images you uploaded. -- Tom 08:52, 24 Dec 2004 (MST)

I use this thing called Screenshot Utility as my, quote unquote, "screenshot program", if that's what you call those things. But anyway, I'm trying to download a new "program of shots of screens", but the downloading bar's been stuck at 77% for like, 10 minutes, so, I dunno.

Re: Rejects cat

Just got your message. The reason I started the "project" is because, from my view, the Rejected Characters should be flagged not only from the Rejects page, but from their article itself. --Gafaddict 21:26, 28 Dec 2004 (EST)

Your concern is understandable, but the whole "rejects" thing really isn't to Drhaggis and my liking. However I'm mostly at a loss at how to classify these things, but I'll ask Drhaggis, as putting things into categories is his speciality. -- Tom 19:33, 28 Dec 2004 (MST)
I think the "Rejects" page should be deleted. If we as a community have deemed a character or item "article worthy" we simply create the article and categorize it accordingly. I think "Rejects" are a hold over from the old Wiki that is not served by the capabilities of the new Wiki. There are few truly "Rejected" things; Dijjery-Doo for example was rejected by TBC, but he has still popped up in for kids.
The Characters/Items/Places categories are a bit big, and can be grouped into sub categories. - Dr Haggis - Talk 12:51, 29 Dec 2004 (MST)
Okay, sounds reasonable enough to me. However, how do you think we can go about this with minimal damage to the egos of those responsible for said Rejects? And I sure don't want anything to get lost. -- Tom 13:14, 29 Dec 2004 (MST)
I think we just need to delete the "Rejects" list. All the things that were previously deamed to be rejected already have articles so no data is lost, just the well done "...are a waste of time" banners on the page. - Dr Haggis - Talk 13:23, 29 Dec 2004 (MST)

Rejected Halloween Costumes Task

Hi Tom! Thunderbird here again, with a special task for a few of my fellow users. On the Sketchbook page, in the Museum section of that page, the last picture is a bunch of rejected halloween costume ideas. The caption gives the challenge '10 bucks to anyone who can identify them all'. So what I propose is to identify them all. I've already set up a basic 'top left to bottom right' type list under the 'Description' section, with the two most obvious costumes in it. But can we get the other costumes, and win ourselves $10? Any costumes you know would be a help. Thanks. [[User:Thunderbird L17|⇔Thunderbird⇔]] 02:14, 2 Jan 2005 (MST)

is hardly article worthy. So pretty much we know that Coach Z's team is coached by Coach Z and is a team. Was it ever even mentioned in a toon?

Rock Opera Context Note

Tom,

Hello. I hope your day is well.

I disagree with your moving the work left to do on the rock opera context page to the discussion page, for the simple reason that NOBODY will see it there. If it can't be on the main page, then it should be deleted altogether, as it is serving no purpose.

The point of putting up the note was to aid people in knowing which words were still missing and at the same time encourage those die-hard troupers out there to help complete the page (kind of like a game). You know who I'm talking about: that special someone who is gonna figure out exactly which "I" was used from "lackey".

Therefore, I believe the note should be reinstated at the head of the main page. Besides, it's only temporary... just till we get this thing done.

Kind regards,
It's dot com 10:58, 23 Feb 2005 (MST)

I understand and appreciate your concern. However, articles are designed to be read as articles and nothing else. There should never be notes or instructions left for future editors. This is mentioned explicitly in the don't use conversational style section of the wiki standards. Wiki users, especially the die-hard troupers you mention, know to look at Talk pages. That's what they are for. -- Tom 11:05, 23 Feb 2005 (MST)

I see your point. I still don't completely like it, but at least I agree with you now. This particular page is close to my heart because I'm the one who set it up and got the ball rolling on filling in the words (although, I'll admit that someone would have done it eventually). It also happens to be the very first page I've created for the Wiki. I'm so pleased that the community has deemed the page useful and that they're helping to finish it with such vigor. I watch excitedly as each new entry is filled in. (I would do more research myself, but I've got this stupid job thing where I have to be if I want money. You probably know how that goes.)

Cheers,
It's dot com 11:49, 23 Feb 2005 (MST)

No problem. I'll remove the note again. I'd also like to bring to your attention the HRWiki:Projects page. That might be a better spot for you to put a note. -- Tom 13:10, 23 Feb 2005 (MST)

Similar occurences appear on other pages where the lighter is used. Would you like me to remove those fun facts too?---erson 14:47, 3 Apr 2005 (MDT)
I suppose as long as there is a link somewhere in the article there isn't any harm. But make sure the fun facts don't afford any additional information before you remove them. Whoa! Yes, yes I most assuradly do. Only every two or three days though, and my junk folder even less, due to the unholy ammount of spam I am bombarded with. But I just sifted through, and found it. I also added you to safe list, so all future emails from yourself will be replied to much faster. Come to think of it, I'm gonna go and add all sysop addresses to my safe list. ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 01:11, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Sysop Question

Hey Tom, I have a question about the new Sysop abilities. Just how do I do the Recentchanges Patrol ability? And what exactly would I be viewing? Aren't edits instantanious? So how do I view them ahead of time? Thanks Tom. ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 03:24, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

When you view edits via the RecentChanges page by clicking on the "diff" link, you now have the option to "[Mark as patrolled]". This removes the red exclamation point on the RecentChanges list, alerting other sysops that you've checked out that edit so they don't have to. -- Tom 03:49, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Sweet, That's useful. I was wondering what those red marks were for. Okay, thanks. ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 04:06, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Actually, you can mark a change as patrolled if you are or aren't a sysop. At least, I could. →FireBird
Hey, you're right. The requirement is simply that you are a logged in user. -- Tom 00:25, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Oh. Well then... Coun't a troll mark his own change as 'patrolled'? Or are trolls generally just accepted to not be that smart, or have that long of an attention span? Thunderbird 23:28, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Generally, trolls != smart. But yes, any logged in user could mark any edit as patrolled. Though it's likely that the kind of people that deface articles are not the kind of people who know about the patrolled edit feature. -- Tom 01:45, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Format Help

(copying what's on my Talk page) Hi there -erson. I've deleted your "formathelp" Template and Category. If something is formatted incorrectly, just fix it. Notes for future editors like that should not appear in articles, as per the Wiki standards. -- Tom 16:53, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I realise that, however it is I that do not know advanced formating, d would like to keep this notes inthe pages I am planning to make. And shouldnt that *this page requires clanup and revision* template be deleted too as it would be a note to future editors?-- Posted by: -erson Talk 18:43, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Help:Editing contains all the advanced formatting you should need to make a page. You can also use the Sandbox for practice and ask questions and request help from other users (I'd be happy to assist). The Cleanup template isn't really a note to future editors so much as a notice that a page needs work done on it. So there's really no need for the "formathelp" template. MATT?!?!?!

Oh come on, couldn't you guess I was gonna do that next? I just did a save, and realized that THE EXACT CHANGES were already made. Seriously, what a pointless five minutes. Oh well. You wanna do the final clean up/formatting? ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 23:26, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

You actually went through and changed them all by hand? Man, that's rough. I just popped the text into TextPad and did a "find and replace all". It's all yours now, help yourself. -- Tom 23:35, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Ah, cut and paste. I thought of the 'find and replace all', but since it isn't in the Wiki I didn't think of it. I just cut and pasted 'att', and then just pointed and Ctr+V'd. But your meathod will be WAY better in the future, thanks. Learn something new everyday I guess... ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 23:39, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Indeed. -- Tom 23:43, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Personal CSS

Is it possible to change the size of the logo in one's personal "monobook.css"? →FireBird

Not really. You could hide half of it (or as much as you want) with something like #p-logo{height:155px;width:6em;overflow:hidden;}, but I don't think that's what you are looking for. There might be some other solution, but I really can't think of anything right now off of the top of my head. -- Tom 01:49, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

Attention...

Tom, have you noticed the conversation going on at HRWiki talk:Introduction 2 yet? I've proposed combining pages 2 and 3 into a single page and posted a mock-up on my user page. Let me know what you think. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 19:03, 5 May 2005 (UTC)

Personalized Signatures

Since many folks nowadays seem to be personalizing their sigs, I was just wondering: Is sig help covered in an 'HRWiki:' page? If not, should one be made? Thunderbird 18:42, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

HRWiki:User preferences help#Your nickname. -- Tom 21:31, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. I added a paragraph about changing the signature color, check it out and make changes if you want. I don't think I really explained it perfectly... Thunderbird 21:42, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
I honestly don't think it is necessary. It's something people learn over time. Customizing one's signature shouldn't be that important. And if I may ask, why are you linking to december.com there? Wouldn't the relavent Wikipedia article on web colors be better? -- Tom 21:51, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
I fixed the paragraph about signature color so it is valid XHTML 1.0 Strict (just doing my duty as a member of the validation committee). I also linked to the suggested wikipedia article. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 00:27, 7 May 2005 (UTC)
Oh there it is. I figured there was some kinda wikipedia article on the subject, but I couldn't find it. That was just the site I used, but yea, the wikipedia one is far better. And I know it's not necessary, but I couldn't figure it out, so likely people that come along later won't be able to either. This way they can just turn to the help section, and it's all right there along with a Wikipedia color scheme. Thanks guys. Thunderbird 07:11, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

Trogga

We have a problem with Trogga. He's been making alot of edits that boarder on Trolling. Just look at his talk page and you'll see what we mean. Make no mistake about it, he does make good edits too, but a large chunk of them are mass deletions of text. So what should we do? Is another big deletion grounds for blocking? Or should we continue to follow him around undoing his... overzealousness? Thunderbird 01:22, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

I know Joey has threatened to block him before. I know he makes some good edits, so just be careful we don't lose a good editor. If you feel he should be blocked, just make sure you give him fair warning (which I guess you have already) and keep it short (24h). -- Tom 13:01, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Copywritten Reply

Check it out. Ask and thou shalth recieve. He said to let him know either way, so should I just email back, thank him for his offer, and accept it? (I'm also gonna get to all the other interviews over the next couple days, start writing some letters...) Thunderbird 05:38, 12 May 2005 (UTC)

Hey, something is better than nothing. Yeah, you should email him back and kindly accept with our gratitude. Just make sure you include all your emails back and forth on the discussion page. Good work! -- Tom 15:42, 12 May 2005 (UTC)
Do you have time for a legal question? I was just seeing the R!OT news radio page, that one apparently didn't even come with a website or transcript. Does that fall under 'fair use'? Same question with Wired News Radio. Thunderbird 22:16, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
For the R!OT Radio Interview 1, the best I could find was a contact form. I think we are okay with the transcript there, but we could still ask for information regarding the broadcast.
The Wired News Radio Interview has "© Copyright 2005, Lycos, Inc. All Rights Reserved." at the bottom. There's also a "Reprints" link at the top, that leads to a walkthrough of copyright stuff. You'd want to choose the "All Other Licensing Requests" option there, and fill out that form.
Hope that helps. -- Tom 22:48, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
Thanks man, that's perfect. One more legal question: Wonkavision. Is that fair use? Seems like reprinting stuff in a magazine that's still for sale wouldn't fall under that, but am I wrong? Thunderbird 07:06, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, regarding the Wonkavision Magazine Interview, I'm thinking that we can't reproduce it for the reasons you mention, but there's no harm in asking. I'd also guess the copy that exists elsewhere doesn't have permission to be there. -- Tom 16:07, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
Okay, well thanks for all that info, I'll just keep trying to work out all the legal bugs on that page then. Thanks. Thunderbird 19:11, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

pre

Is there a way to make this formatting have a 'cascading' type result fitting the window, as is usually the case? All I ever get, save manually seperating the paragraph into managable lines, is having the paragraph extend endlessly to the right... Thunderbird 05:00, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, what you experience is exactly what the <pre> tag is supposed to do. Sorry. -- Tom 15:39, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
Oh okay. But we're still supposed to use this when showing some kind of printed message, such as an email, correct? Because that's what I've been doing with the permission emails for reprintage on the talk pages. Thunderbird 17:22, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
When quoting an email, you should use blockquote instead of pre. We should set up a style so that blockquoted text has a distinct look. Perhaps a bar down the left hand side like you get when replying to an email in Outlook. I've actually been wanting to get away from pre for some time now. I've proposed a change to Strong Bad Emails on the Strong Bad Email talk page. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:17, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

SPACL?

Have you seen The Stick lately, namely this 'SPACL' thing? Is this sanctioned at all? It doesn't really seem to fit into the wiki as a 'NPOV' type place at ALL. The Real Zajac, a user who's only been around a few months, and whom I've never even HEARD OF, has seemed to claim ownership of it as well, which really isn't a Wiki thing to do. I mean, not even Joeyday does much without a joint decision. I don't want to delete it or anything in case it is sanctioned, but I really think this needs a total overhaul at least, if not total deletion. Can't this thing just be covered under the STUFF page, or it's talk page? This is really starting to turn this Wiki into the direction of the Fanstuff one, something I really wouldn't want to see... Thunderbird 19:20, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

Eep. I don't that's what Joey had in mind, and it looks like he is taking care of it on the talk page over there. Thanks for the heads up Thunderbird. -- Tom 13:33, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

OK TOM! I give up! Everybody's been flicking my ear about some typa spyware or something on my computer that I've personally never seen a lick of. If what you say is true, do you, or anyone else, know how to DELETED the ware? Your whatever, Cheatachu72 P.S. Everyone's been saying that it mangles pages. So sorry for mangling any pages.

Who has been bothering you about this? Everybody? What I say is true? What are you talking about? -- Tom 22:01, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
I can't edit my user page and alot of other stuff because whenever I click "edit", The screen says "USER IS BLOCKED. YOU HAVE BEEN BLOCKED BY TOM. HE SAYS THAT YOU HAVE SPYWARE THAT MANGLES PAGES. PLEASE CONTACT TOM." or something like that. So its been mostly you, but once in a blue moon, it pops from someone like Jay or someone else popular or important *sob*. Cheatachu72
Not exactly that. We don't use all capital letters in any of our site notices. It sounds like you are seeing the blocked notice. You see that part there that says "Your IP address is [your IP address here]. Please include this address in any queries you make." Yeah, I need your IP address to fix the problem. Or at least determine what's going on. -- Tom 02:17, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
He had a different complaint about some "dollar" deal that happened a while back... I think his IP address might be ever-shifting, but since I don't know what his IP address is... --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 02:22, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

Okay now. Just before I tell you my IP address, how do you find out your IP address (sorry, I've only been on HRWiki for 2 months or so, and I'm still trying to adapt and learn all thems weird whatsamajiggies you's abeen saying (like IP Address)).

There are multiple ways to go about it. One easy way would just be to log out and look at the upper-right corner of any page here on the Wiki, and it will tell you. Or you could go through your computer's settings. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 02:39, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
It should be a seven or eight digit number or so, seperated by two periods. E.g: 43.202.18 or something. and Jay's right, the best way to find it is just sign out, and look on the top right of the wiki, or even just after signing out, leave a comment here that includes: ~~~~ , Which is four little wavy signs that will be on the top left of your keyboard. (Likely 'Shift' + The top left button below esc). Are those instructions any better? Thunderbird 16:50, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
Actually it will be four numbers of up to three digits each - anything from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. But I'm a Comp Sci major who studied IP addresses as part of one of my classes last semester. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 18:21, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
Jay and Thunderbird: IP addresses consist of 32 bits. A single bit is a one or a zero. IPv4 addresses are commonly expressed as a dotted quad, four octets (8 bits) separated by periods. Read IP address for more information.
Cheatachu72: Try ipchicken.com. -- Tom 18:29, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
Uh, yes, I know. I was just trying to explain what it would look like. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 18:46, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
I didn't. Very... Interesting. Thanks guys. Thunderbird (Check Out My New And Improved Userpage! Comment On How To Make It Better!)

Quite sadly, there's no such thing as a permanent ban. We can ban a particular IP address indefinitely, but ISPs assign users new IP addreses frequently, especially on dial-up. Banning any IP indefinitely is just as likely to block out legitimate users who inherit the blocked IP sometime down the road as it is to keep the troll from coming back. This is why we rarely use indefinite blocks. — InterruptorJones 17:42, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

They certainly don't make pizzas or own any part of the Mellow Mushroom company. They were hired to do the website. And if my memory serves me correctly, I think Matt did some radio commercials for them too. Why do you ask? -- Tom 20:30, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I know they only did the website, but why do you say the toons aren't written by TBC? --TROGGA! 00:06, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The toon that is on the site is pathetic. I hold TBC in too high a regard to say that they wrote it. -- Tony Stony 00:15, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Trogga: Were the toons written by The Brothers Chaps? -- Tom 20:12, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Balding Man's Living Room

Why was that page baleeted? I thought it would be useful to create, but I guess not. Any reason why? Homsar999 05:04, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You'll probably want to delete the corresponding screenshot with the page; without the page it's useless. I'll go ahead and tack a tobedeleted on the screenshot. Crystallina 05:07, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Homsar999: I didn't delete the page. You can check the deletion log to see that FireBird did. Trogga marked it for deletion, probably because all it contained was "Balding Man's Living Room is where Balding Man lives. It is first seen in Senorial Day. We have yet to see the rest of his house." All I did was remove the links to the page from the rest of the Wiki. -- Tom 16:48, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
If it's because of content, then Ted Kotsaftis might as well be deleted and un-linked, as well. Homsar999 03:15, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
As I mentioned earlier, I did not delete the page. Please take this up with FireBird and Trogga. The Ted Kotsaftis article is a stub with plenty of room to expand. Ted has worked on graphic design for several other projects. The room the Balding Man was in doesn't have the same potential. Why do you think this article would be useful? -- Tom 06:30, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

More Fanstuff Sysops

Do you think you and the other big admins could get a fanstuff sysop nomination going for the Fanstuff Wiki? There are only two active sysops there as of right now, and they get overwhelmed occassionally. For example, someone made a page that insulted a user and had profanity in the page title alone. Although several users find about it quickly and marked if for deletion, it stayed around for about two weeks before one of the sysops found it. It took even longer for the creator of the page to be banned. So... yeah, many users think more sysops are needed. Thanks for considering this, Joshua.

Okay. Consider it done. -- Tom 22:15, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm a sysop! Hooray! Um, am I going to be the only new sysop, or am I supposed to set up a nominations page? -- Joshua 22:59, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You're it. Good luck. -- Tom 04:02, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

No nominations? Okay. -- Joshua 12:08, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sig

What does [[User:Tom|<nowiki></nowiki>]] do in your signature? I've wondered for a while. — It's dot com 05:57, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've had that there since the very beginning, when we starting using MediaWiki back in 1.3 beta. When I leave a comment, it allows me to put my four tildes right after the period. I could figure out how to do it differently with the new features in 1.4, but I'm kind of used to it. -- Tom 22:57, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Deleters

How do you become someone who deletes useless articles? And what's a "Sysop"?

You sorta answered your own question - sysops are the people who delete articles, as well as block abusive users. JoeyDay and Tom select the sysops, but the last time they did, all but one of the new sysops were nominated on a special page by regular users. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 21:06, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm not asking you, Jay. And even though you responded, you didn't answer the question! I was talking to Tom!

Umm, yes he did answer both of your questions. The first one is answered by "JoeyDay and Tom select the sysops", and the second question with "sysops are the people who delete articles, as well as block abusive users". Anyone can answer a question set on a talk page, even if they were not the intended reciever of that comment. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif, 22:29, 10 June 2005 (BST)
It's a Wiki -- anyone can respond on any talk page. And Jay's answer is correct. To continue the answer, however, the way you get nominated / chosen for a sysop is by making significant, useful edits (like undertaking large formatting projects) and showing good judgement in both your own edits and in dealing with other wiki-users. Reverting from trolls is also a good thing to do. It only happens when the existing admins are looking for new ones, which I'm guessing won't be for quite some time. And Jay, how long did it take you to realize that it was I, Sanjuro/Balmung, whom was posting these messages?

I knew it from the start - I've been following this discussion from Special:Recentchanges, where it puts your user name or IP address next to every edit you make. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 22:00, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I am sick and tired of you Tomstiff.

So telling Jay you hate him and demanding that people "Speak English!" isn't offensive? Aurora the Homestar Coder 22:23, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Sanjuro, I'd like to question your partiality in evaluating tomstiff's comment, when only two minutes before you expressed on this very page your hatred for another user. Wasn't your comment offensive? -- Tom 22:24, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Sanjuro, my comment earlier was in no way an attempt to be offensive! It was merely an amusing way to warn you that expressing hatred towards another member of this community usually brings about a ban. If I offended you in any way, please, please forgive me! I remain, as ever, your wiki friend -- tomstiff 22:28, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Don't talk to me like that Tom. I can, and will, track you down.

Heh heh. I'm laughing at your petty threat. You better watch out, because in the past we've blocked people for threating others and making personal attacks. Consider this a formal warning. -- Tom 22:30, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Tomstiff, I found NOTHING amusing WHAT-SO-EVER about that comment of yours.Tim-E- Dee 22:34, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ooh, but I do. This is better than television. Somebody make the popcorn! Seriously, though—and I mean this with all friendliness possible—you're playing with fire here. I'm just a user, so I'm not warning you, just giving advice. Be careful. — It's dot com 22:38, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Look, Sanjuro, you could be a great, useful Wiki-member, or you could bash, insult and threaten other members. The first would be nice, and the second will just get you banned and mocked. As Captain Planet would say, the choice is yours! (Wow, Tom, your talk page is too long, Clanky!) Aurora the Homestar Coder 22:43, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
OK, why is my sig appearing in a "pre" box? Aurora the Homestar Coder 22:45, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
It sure is Aurora. I feel so loved. Oh, and it's the space after the newline. -- Tom 22:46, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Maybe you should make a talk archive like some other users do. Oh, and thanks for fixing my sig ineptness. Aurora the Homestar Coder 22:48, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
No way. A long talk page is the coolest. And no problem, 'twas a common hard-to-spot mistake. -- Tom 22:51, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
As long as we're all here, Tom, what did you mean yesterday when you said to hold off on the STUFF stuff? And I'm still curious about my question in the section right above this one. — It's dot com

Sanjuro is obviously upset that his work, although not useful, was unceremoniously trashed. He is expressing his anger in the wrong way, in my opinion, but it's at least understandable. I think he put {{tobedeleted}} on his user page in haste. Did it have to be deleted right away? If not, is there an undelete feature? — It's dot com 22:54, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Oh, sure, it's easy to undelete. The entire old history has been saved. I wouldn't have done it if that were not the case (mostly because I have a feeling he thinks that those comments are gone forever). Aurora the Homestar Coder 22:57, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yes, that's right. If necessary, a sysop can restore any version of any deleted page at any time. Only image deletion is permanent. However, the user in question's work on the aforementioned page was not unceremoniously trashed. It did not belong anywhere in the context of this project and was dealt with accordingly. -- Tom 22:59, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Oh, and It's dot com: Would you care to join me in the IRC channel to discuss the matter of STUFF? If not, I can reply here. -- Tom 23:01, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I know it was dealt with accordingly, but to him his hard work was suddenly gone. I'm not defending the page, or even the user, I'm just saying we should let him cool down before granting his request to delete his user page altogether. — It's dot com 23:04, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
IRC, eh, Tom? I saw one o' thems once. I'll head on over there now. Aurora, are you coming? — It's dot com

This website is SO AWESOME! But I think that you guys shouldtake it easy on Sanjuro. By the sound of things (from which I read) all of your comments just made him more frustrated. Watch what you type to this member, cause it just might make him even MORE frustrated. And Aurora, Captain Planet says "The power is yours", not "The choice is yours". No offense though.

Ah, I had a feeling I would botch that quote, hehehe. Well, my point still stands. Aurora the Homestar Coder 23:35, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Botch? What does that mean Aurora?

Botch = to make a mistake or ruin something. Aurora the Homestar Coder 23:45, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

So what happened here with Sanjuro? And... Where is he?

Okay. Who is this User:Balmung of Azure Sky member?Tim-E- Dee 23:52, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Is anyone out there?

That depends on your definition of "is"

I'm really sorry, but just reading through all this made me tired. I think everyone involved needed to have a rest. --BazookaJoe 00:01, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Okay you. Where's Tom and Aurora? Tell me NOW! Cause I aient playing no games, I mean bussiness!

I'm sorry. Your request cannot be answered at this time. Please try again later, or leave a message after the tone.

Tom, Aurora? How DARE you ignore The GREAT Sanjuro?

They aren't online right now. Calm down. Fix some hot cocoa and take some deep breaths. —FireBird|Talk 00:36, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Actually, I am online. Hot cocoa does sound good though. Aurora the Homestar Coder 00:45, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Well now you are. —FireBird|Talk 00:47, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Chocolate? where? -- Tony Stony 00:50, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Mmmm... Hot cocoa. I haven't had some of that stuff in a LLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGG time!

Aurora? Are you still on?

Deletion on my account please! It's too raw!

Yo Tom! What's up? I need you to do me a little favour. My accounts Sanjuro and Balmung? Yeah. Can you delete them? Thanks Sanjuro/Balmung 02:42, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC) P.S. User:Balmung not to be confused with User:Balmung of Azure Sky

Tim, after reviewing the database, I can clearly see that you currently you have three accounts:
  1. User:Balmung (user_id 788)
  2. User:Sanjuro (user_id 789)
  3. User:Balmung of Azure Sky (user_id 2001)
The use of sock puppet accounts is highly discouraged. However, I will not delete any of these accounts, since an accurate article edit history record must be maintained. As I'm sure you can see, the user page for the first two accounts has already been deleted per your previous request. If you would like to put any other pages up for deletion, use the {{tobedeleted}} template tag.
I recommend that you use one and only one of those accounts from this point forward. -- Tom 20:32, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Sanjuro...are you also User:Son Goku? If so please don't aquire any more accounts...that aint cool man. -- Tony Stony 19:01, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Me? Son Goku? (L'sOL!) No way! That's my younger brother! We only have one computer that WE can use so if I'm to show him something, I have to Log Off so he can Log On! Sanjuro/Balmung 19:10, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hmm i guess that proves me wrong. I just thought it was odd that your little brother would sign on, create a user page then within a few seconds you correct him online...but then again i'm weird.

What do you mean Tony Stony?

Its none of my business is what I mean...I just thought it weird. Btw it is possible to sign your posts with 4 tildes. Comme ca: Tony Stony 19:25, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

STUFF stuff

Afternoon, Tom. I've been busy all morning closing out old STUFF discussions. I have a little ways to go, though. Also, I wonder if we could speak more about how the page should be redesigned before anything major is done to it. Put a note on my talk page and I'll meet you in the IRC. Thanks. — It's dot com 16:35, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sure. -- Tom 17:27, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm back, as promised. Are you around? I'm monitoring the IRC. — It's dot com 19:32, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hey Tom.
I am making good progress:
Yet to do:
  • Organize/polish the instructions
  • Create the templates for closed facts
  • Have other users test the ease of use
  • Convert current items to new format
The hardest part isn't figuring out how this will work. The hardest part isn't even figuring out how to streamline the process to minimize keystrokes and errors. No, the hardest part is figuring out how to explain it so that novices can understand.
I was hoping to go live today, but I see that that's not going to happen. Now I'm hoping to go live by midweek. (Right this second, however, I'm hoping to go get some good sleep.) Let me know how you think it's going. — It's dot com 05:07, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Update: Getting very close now. I've just about nailed it all down. That's enough for tonight... — It's dot com 06:16, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You seem like you've got everything under control. If you need me for anything specific, let me know. Good work. -- Tom 23:13, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The main format is ready to go live. We are in the public testing stage now. Once we work out any bugs, all that will remain will be to convert the existing facts to the new format. — It's dot com 08:35, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Seriously.

Unban me from the IRC chat. --Homsar999ß 00:05, 21 Jun 2005 (CDT)

Admin Nomination

I'm sure we're not looking for any new sysops after this thing in April, but I think BazookaJoe would be a great sysop. He seems to be working harder around here than any of us sysops anyways, and he always seems to have good judgement. I'd love to have him on the team. —FireBird|Talk 22:47, 10 Jul 2005 (UTC)

I can't remember the specific instance, but in the last day or so I've thought to myself, "Isn't BazookaJoe an admin?", so whatever was going on at the time must have been good. — It's dot com 23:17, 10 Jul 2005 (UTC)
I always forget that he isn't an admin, because he uses the same "reverted from (whoever) to last version from (whoever)" message. I guess he types it in manually... Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 00:29, 11 Jul 2005 (UTC)
True, but he has only been around for a little over two months. There are some users that have been around significantly longer that I think are also deserving of sysopness. I do like the guy, and would be happy if he became a sysop, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Admins leave it a few months yet before opening another Nomination Window. Thunderbird 21:46, 18 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Question

On the picture of you are you the one on the left or right I'm guessing you're on the right because the left one looks not happy, but it doesn't look like matt because of the hair.

I'm in the Duck Shirt and jacket. Mike (not Matt) is in the red shirt with the scarf. -- Tom 12:37, 13 Jul 2005 (UTC)
And it isn't that Mike is unhappy... He apparently just takes bad pictures. — It's dot com 14:16, 13 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for answering my question guys, and uh that link to bad pictures looks like Matt is wearing that same shirt as the picture on this page.

Yeah, they were taken less than five minutes apart at the NYU Talk on Mar 1, 2005. In fact, you can actually see a bit of my head in the background of DaChazman's photo. -- Tom 12:57, 14 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Forum namespace

How come there's not a convenient external namespace for the forum? You know, so that [http://forum.hrwiki.org/viewtopic.php?t=XXXX] could be replaced with [[Forum:XXXX]], or something similar. How's our bandwidth lookin'? — It's dot com 19:04, 27 Jul 2005 (UTC)

That's not a bad idea, I'll look into that. Though you should probably remind me after next Monday. Our bandwidth is still looking, but I think we are down to the final hours here. -- Tom 20:04, 27 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Will do. — It's dot com
Here is the reminder you requested. — It's dot com 18:17, 2 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Done. Example: [[Forum:15|thread 15]] becomes thread 15. Oh, and just so I remember for next time, they are interwiki links, not namespaces. -- Tom 18:52, 2 Aug 2005 (UTC)

On the wiki

I'm working on the transcripts as fast as I can... what, do you think I eat, sleep, and breathe Homestar Runner... don't answer that. ;) Seriously, we're working on them. But having Mike mention that he read something on our wiki has got to be the ultimate prize for us. It's like, poring over all the crazy details that we do has, in a small but significant way, paid off. I think we should permit ourselves in this case to announce it in big, bold letters. Or at least in italics. — It's dot com 00:12, 28 Jul 2005 (UTC)

What?!?! Where 'bouts was this? First I've heard of it. Thunderbird 03:17, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
The animal commentary. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 03:19, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Yup. -- Tom 03:20, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Wow, awsome! Kudos to 66.120.157.219, the one who originally left the Compound Eyes fun fact. He never really made all that many edits, but who would have guessed it was one of the most important edits of all... Thunderbird 18:06, 14 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Goofs vs. Typos

"Goofs" are mistakes TBC make; for the purposes of our discussion, Strong Sad made these mistakes. We don't note mistakes Strong Bad makes in his emails as Goofs; rather, we note them in the Remarks. Since there were enough of Strong Sad's mistakes for a whole section, I changed it to "Typos". — It's dot com 22:07, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I'm not really the guy who would know the difference. I only made that change for two reasons:
  1. "Typos" isn't one of the ways we categorize Fun Facts. Goofs is.
  2. The Francis Scott Key fact is a Goof. I knew it wasn't a typo, so I changed the header to Goofs for lack of a better choice for that particular grouping.
That being said, the Key fact is probably the only one of the four that are currently under that header that really is a Goof. The typos by Strong Sad should probably be moved to another section. Maybe Remarks? -- Tom 22:35, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Goofs may be our standard category, but we are flexible enough to accomodate a special category on a toon-by-toon basis. For example, Homestar's attempts at Deleted. I think these should be grouped together since there are several of them. How about "Strong Sad's Goofs", or "Strong Sad's Mistakes", or something similar? — It's dot com 22:42, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)
I think we should ask Jay. He's the Keeper-Tracker. -- Tom 22:59, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)
I think I'll just copy the discussion from 22:42 on up over to the article's talk page. Then, everyone can have a say. — It's dot com 23:08, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. -- Tom 23:10, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

(see Talk:Strong Sad's Lament for more)

You are appreciated

I was looking over your talk page, and it's been way too long since someone wrote to tell you thanks for all the work and maintenance you put into the site. Thank you! I was propted to tell you this today when I saw that, simply by my uploading an image, you created a new template to replace the makeshift GFDL blurb I had on the image; created a new category for other existing, similar images; and then sought out those five other images that should be in the category and added the template there as well—all within the blink of an eye! I would hope that we all make the wiki experience a little better for those around us, and I must say you certainly do that. And then some. Sincerely, It's dot com

Hey, you're welcome. It's my pleasure. -- Tom 16:33, 19 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Patrolled Fanstuff

Hey, can you edit LocalSettings.php section of the fanstuff to get rid of those red "patrolled" explanation points in the recent changes there? We really don't need or want them. - Joshua

Before I do anything, I'd like to see the discussion that took place when deciding this. Where is it? -- Tom 15:20, 22 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Oh, well that's a problem. It was on a poll on the second Fanstuff Forum, which is offline for an indefinite amount of time. (it seems that its host quit) I'll create a new poll if you want me to, but I don't think that's nessecary. But if you go there and look at the recent changes, you'll see red exclamation points as far as the eye can see. We don't use them. - Joshua

Done. -- Tom 21:52, 23 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Personal JavaScript

I got a little curious and decided to check out your user JavaScript. What exactly does it do? I tried copying it into my own personal JS, but I didn't see any changes in the preview. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 21:30, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)

It duplicates the links for the tabs at the top of every page on the bottom. I think you might have to have accompanying personal CSS to style it. That should be in my user CSS somewhere. -- Tom 21:38, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Judging by your CSS, it seems that way, so that would explain why I didn't see any change - thanks. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 22:02, 14 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Thechamp, I'm assuming you are referring to my recent deletion of a discussion page (Talk:No Loafing Sign) you started that simply contained "You heard um, No loafing!". Your edit was defacement. Discussion pages exist to discuss articles and their content, not for you to attempt to make jokes or be funny. I love the idea; is the concept to extend indiscriminately to all except trolls, or to use in those "Whoa—that was a beneficial edit! Why is this guy an IP?" situations? I ask because 24.30.124.162 seems to be rather articulate and wikiliterate. —AbdiViklas 06:39, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

In this case, it was mostly the latter. Though I have to admit, it's not the first time I've done it.
The person you mention there, if I'm not mistaken, is Wikipedia:User:Metaeducation. They actually caused a tiny ruckus on Wikipedia back in May 2005 that involved a HRWiki template thing. See Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/Deleted/May 2005#Template:Hrwiki and Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/Not deleted/June 2005#Template:Memoryalpha for some details. (And I wish we could still get at the conversation found at Template talk:Hrwiki where Joey and I questioned the template, but we can't.) -- Tom 06:59, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
Holy cow. So does the fact that the template doesn't exist mean it was deleted? And are we a sister wiki? Meanwhile, is inviting anonnys strictly a sysop thing, or can anyone? —AbdiViklas 07:17, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
Yes, the Hrwiki template was deleted, the link is for the discussion that occured prior to its deletion. The Memoryalpha one was not, that is the discussion that occured prior to the decision to keep. We are not a sister wiki to Wikipedia. We have nothing to do with the Wikimedia Foundation or any of its projects. Our Wiki runs on the same software, MediaWiki, but that's pretty much where it ends. As for inviting, it's a wiki, I encourage you to be bold. -- Tom 21:47, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

64.9.51.190

Hey, Tom. I was just wondering why you ended up blocking IP 64.9.51.190. I looked at what happened, and it turns out that his addition to H*R.com updates was correct. There is a new quote, fan stuff, and sketch book. You probably found or saw something that I didn't, so you probably have a very legitement reason. — Lapper (talk) 21:49, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Fixed already. Thanks. -- Tom 21:50, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
I kept reverting his work 'cause in my eyes I didn't think that we'd need that on there. Plus he kept on changing it. -- Sanjuro/Balmung
But that page is our listing of all Homestar Runner updates, why wouldn't what he added belong there? -- Tom 22:23, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

I can't find the IRC chat...

Where's it at? Sanjuro/Balmung

unlocking uploading

Okay Tom, here's my problem. I am a bureaucrat at the Eskimo Bob Wiki and we just moved to new software. The uploading is locked. How do I unlock it?--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 12:46, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, we need to know soon. Theres alot of blank images, and we REALLY need to fix that. H * R 7 0 0
Who upgraded the software? Did they reconfigure LocalSettings.php correctly? And the directions for enabling uploads can found in the User's Guide. -- Tom 14:43, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
Pertmywert owns the wiki. He upgraded it. So, does that mean you'll have to ask him about it? H * R 7 0 0
If Pertmywert is the only one with access to the files on the server, then yes. He needs to modify one line of his LocalSettings.php file to allow uploads. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 17:19, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
Okay. I'll alert him ASAP. H * R 7 0 0
Also note that the upgrade instructions exist as part of the archive that Pertmywert uploaded. -- Tom 17:36, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Why am I banned from #hrwiki? Was I trolling or something? --Thatkidsam 16:52, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

What's your IRC username? What's your IP address? What did you do to get banned from the channel? Are you sure you're banned, or are you just getting errors when you try to connect? -- Tom 20:18, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
I usually go by thatkidsa [sic]. My IP is 72.145.188.197. I only went on there twice, and the only thing I might have done that angered people is... Having little knowledge of the IRC code 'n such. And I'm pretty sure I'm banned... --Thatkidsam (NLI) 21:03, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
#hrwiki You're banned from that channel
Okay, you should be good now. There was a fairly broad ban in there that you got caught up in. -- Tom 22:02, 6 November 2005 (UTC).

Question about the bad_image_list problem

I'm a contributor over on another wiki and I was wondering how you solved the problem discussed on HRWiki_talk:Upgrade_to_MediaWiki_1.5#Database error. It's happening on ours and Google, the MediaWiki site, and the MW Bugzilla haven't yielded any info. But, it Google did link to that talk page. Any info you can provide will help. Who keeps on allowing new user registration on the Fanstuff Wiki?! He keeps on allowing the NSMC bot to attack again and again!! Ugh, it's so annoying... it should be in lockdown until you find out how to stop him for good. - Joshua 13:10, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, seriously. I wish there was something that would appear in the Recent Changes that would tell us if something like this was enebled or disabled. But, whatever. It's up to you guys. Oh, and also, why is there a User Creation Log? H * R 7 0 0 13:31, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

I just wish there were more sysops! H * R 7 0 0 18:18, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
Joshua: I keep allowing new-user registration and anonymous edits on the fanstuff wiki. With your proposed solution, how am I supposed to know if something is stopping the vandal "for good" if registration is still locked down?
H*R 700: Check the sitenotice that appears on every single page of the wiki. It will let you know if new-user registration and anonymous editing are disabled. -- Tom 21:08, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
I understand, but the Fanstuff Wiki is tiring of being this wiki's guinea pig. I understand that this wiki is more important than it, but this is the FOURTH consecutive attack, the second of which is due to being tested upon. More and more troll accounts are being created, and then there's all the troll edits, which bots can't seem to revert. Here there are hundreds of active users to revert problems, but in the fanstuff wiki the number's closer to forty. Several users are becoming dishearted even to the point of leaving because of having to revert pages again and again and again due to all these attacks. Is there any other way? I'm not sure if the Fanstuff Wiki can survive many more attacks. :/ - Joshua 22:48, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
What would you like me to do? What's your solution? I have absolutely no problem at all taking the fanstuff wiki offline completely. Would that be acceptable? -- Tom 23:00, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
I wouldn't normaly say this, but if that's what you have to do, do it soon. I can't stand anymore of this crap. H * R 7 0 0 23:13, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
Temporarily or forever? And what would that solve? (And taking it off forever is not acceptable - too many users love the Fanstuff Wiki.) - Joshua 23:14, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

It would probably only be temporay (Er, however you spell it). Okay, I have a dumb idea; How about if we get some kind og supream hacker to hack the NSMC bot and shut it down or something? Trust me, we may not know how to do it, but if we got a supream hacker, then we'll be going somewhere. H * R 7 0 0 23:17, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

Here's the problem: when you test it, he usually attacks when no bureaucrats are online to stop him. So here's an idea: when you want to test something, enable new users and stuff for a little bit and then DUPLICATE the effects of the troll (without all the damage) and see what happens. When your done and you have your results, disable the new users again. That way the Fanstuff Wiki won't be prone with no bureaucrats online. Um... only if you can duplicate his attacks, that is. - Joshua 23:18, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
Er, I didn't understand that. H * R 7 0 0 23:19, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

Wait a minute, it appears Tom has a souloution. Check the Wiki. H * R 7 0 0 23:24, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

HRWiki Tour

This has been suggested elsewhere, but so far has been ignored by anyone in power. I asked JoeyDay, but he then decided to take a vacation. Then It's Dot Com, but he ignored it. So, let's see if someone will listen to the suggestion here.

A few people think that the HRWiki:Tour, which currently has no solid page linking to it, should be the third tab in HRWiki:Introduction. Do you agree? - Joshua 16:53, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Username redirect

Hi Tom, while JoeyDay is out, I'm asking you this: Can I have a userpage redirect to mine? I was thinking about User:Elcool, because my freinds sometimes look for me on the wiki, not by my correct name. Some other users could use a redirect with common misspellings. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 13:23, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

It's not unheard of... User:Thunderbird redirects to User:Thunderbird L17's page, although I dunno if he got permission for that. --DorianGray
E.L. Cool, this leads to an interesting line of thought. We could take this in two directions:
  1. We do not allow users to have redirects from common misspellings etc. to their correct username. We never have allowed someone to have "two" userspaces, and this would go along with that semi-policy. Then, someone comes along and registers User:Elcool and starts making edits. Someone like User:It's dot com or myself would then approach this user and ask that they choose a new name, since the one they chose is too close to the existing user User:E.L. Cool. (This comes to mind because it happened quite recently.) Then I suppose we'd block the User:Elcool account so it wouldn't happen again. At that point, if you came and asked if you could have that page redirect to your own, I don't think I'd be able to say "no".
  2. We do allow users to have redirects from common misspellings etc. to their correct username. We'd probably want to set up a process for this, however, because if people just started doing this willy-nilly, we might get people registering for usernames that were already redirects. We'd want to make sure what ever names were redirected where blocked as well.
I also don't think I'd want this to become a normal thing, where everyone and their grandmother goes and thinks of all the possible permutations of their username and then goes and makes dozens of redirects. I don't think it's altogether too common that this kind of thing would happen.
DorianGray, the redirect you bring up has a different intent associated with its history, and at this point is an exception.
So at this point, hold off on doing anything for a while. I'm going to want to get Ben's input on how we should handle it, but as of right now, it looks like it could happen. -- Tom 19:05, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, sure. I wasn't even thinking of making it informal. Just make it like the Username Change page where people will ask before they do something. And ok, I'll hold. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 19:17, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
(comment only): I think Thunderbird registered the name Thunderbird before he did that. Ed smilde/talk
I have pondered similar issues to this one in the past. I am open to the idea, although I agree that to just turn everybody loose would not be the best course to take. For one thing, I don't like having user pages that don't correspond to a username in the database. I would like to consider how the problem might be solved elegantly (along the lines of a Special page or something) versus creating and blocking usernames that will never be used. Let me think on it and I'll tell you what I come up with. — It's dot com 03:04, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Robots.txt

You seem to be the senior sysop around here (I think), so while JoeyDay isn't here, I'll ask you instead.

The Robots.txt file at http://hrwiki.org/robots.txt has this:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /index.php/HRWiki:Sandbox

...which disallows just the Sandbox. However, the Robots.txt file at http://fanstuff.hrwiki.org/robots.txt has this:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

...which disallows everything. Why is this? Can you change it? -- Super Sam 07:11, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

It's like that because we (The Admins) do not want the fanstuff wiki indexed by anything. And sorry, but no we aren't going to change it. -- Tom 12:32, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
Why don't the admins want it indexed? -- Super Sam 12:43, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
The primary reason is so that it doesn't show up in search engines. -- Tom 15:12, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
...and why don't the admins want it showing up in search engines? -- Super Sam 16:13, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
Because it isn't built on strictly canon material. In other words, the knowledge base documents and adheres as closely as possible to the cartoons and concepts found on H*R.com as written by TBC, whereas any fanstuff is by definition made up by somebody other than TBC. — It's dot com 16:20, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
What does that have to with the Fanstuff showing up in search engines? -- Super Sam 17:15, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
User:It's dot com is correct, but the reasoning behind our decision was slightly different. The fanstuff wiki was only created to appease a small minority that wanted fanstuff brought back after we decided not to bring it back when we moved to MediaWiki. The Admins didn't want the fanstuff wiki, but relented due to what I can only call persistent whining. One of the conditions of our creating fanstuff was to make sure that search engines did not index it. This was for two reasons:
  1. We are very protective of the HRWiki name. We do not administer fanstuff closely enough to control the quality of the content.
  2. And as It's dot com mentioned, we don't want anyone searching for actual Homestar Runner knowledge to be confused with what they find there.

Bot-assisted stuff

Would you be able to change all links from Stinkoman 20X6 Enemies and Items to Stinkoman 20X6 Enemies and Items? When I moved the page, there were a lot of double redirects left behind. -- Super Sam 12:07, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

NSMC Accounts

Could you please clear out the NSMC accounts at the Fanstuff? -- Super Sam 04:10, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

We can't. Doing that would leave holes in the edit histories, among other things. -- Tom 07:21, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Could you at least clear them from Special:Listusers? -- Super Sam 14:54, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

____________For information or if you need help on the information for archiving information then you can contact me or someone who's an administrator here (I don't know who they are).

First of all, Tom is an administrator here, and I'm sure he's fully aware of how he could archive his user page. It's not lack of knowledge; it's just a personal decision on his part, which he's free to make since his user space belongs to him. Second, if you just learned how to use the Home and End keys you probably wouldn't find this so inconvenient. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 16:59, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Wow! Home and end keys! I never actually never thought of using those, they were always just the keys in the middle of the "seldom used" block of keys. I suppose you learn something new everyday. Thanks for the tip. Thunderbird 06:43, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

MediaWiki Software Related Stuff

Two things:

  1. Do you know how the New Messages bug was solved? I'm having the same problem on a wiki I own.
  2. I had a discussion on #mediawiki with Robchurch about deleting users. Here's the main part of the conversation:
<Super_Sam> If you have database access to a wiki, it is possible to delete usernames?
<robchurch> In theory.
<robchurch> You can delete users without too many repurcussions.
<Super_Sam> What about gaps in the history?
<robchurch> Well, the users will still be credited for the edits.
<Super_Sam> So, under history it'll show the user, but the user won't actually exist.

I proceeded to test it out on my wiki (which also uses MediaWiki 1.5). By deleting the user from the "user" table, the user was effectively deleted (couldn't log in and no longer in the list of users), while edits by that user remained in history (including block logs). However, the user remained in Special:Ipblocklist until they were also deleted from the "ipblock" table. This method should also work for the NSMC accounts.

Super Sam 07:51, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Hey Super Sam. Yeah, I would like to clean all that garbage out. I'm going to do a couple of other maintenance things before I delete all the usernames. I hope to be able to get to it in the next couple of days. — It's dot com 14:06, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Just a heads up

Um, a while ago a user named ohW .rD (Dr. who as a different user) started vandalizing a lot of pages. Not a single sysop was there. Me and The thing fought it off, but I don't believe it ever got blocked. Can you block him permanently to make sure this doesn't happen again? Thnaks. Seriously (Talk) 23:43, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for being vigilant while the wiki was under attack. You join the ranks of a long line of members (including myself) who have had the (mis)fortune to encounter a vandal in the early hours of the day or night when no sysop was around. Keep on tranglin'! Incidentally, feel free to check the block log before posting. Cheers! — It's dot com 23:57, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Help-Policy

Hey Tom, I wanted to ask you about this edit. The reason I had made the Policy category a subcategory of the help category was that I wanted users who were browsing the Help category to be able to see the Policy category and browse its contents right away. I reasoned that having the Policy Category have greater visibility would be preferable (even if no one reads anything really). --Stux 20:09, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

The Policy category is a subcategory of the HRWiki Maintenance category. The Help category is also a subcategory of the HRWiki Maintenance category. The Help category shouldn't be a subcategory of a subcategory that's in the same category as it (the Help category) is in. In other words, we want HRWiki Maintenance --> Policy and HRWiki Maintenance --> Help and not HRWiki Maintenance --> Help and HRWiki Maintenance --> Policy --> Help. -- Tom 22:02, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
My original idea was that the Policy Category be a subcategory of Help, not the other way around. So we'd have RWiki Maintenance --> Policy and HRWiki Maintenance --> Help --> Policy, so that anyone browsing help can see policy and (hopefully) decide to browse through it as well. But it's really not that an important of a detail. Thanks! --Stux 18:13, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Emergency

Hello my name is H*bad and I have a complaint to make, I have been blocked again most likely because of the same person I don't know but I am innocent. No one else is replying to what I have been saying. Can you please unblock me because I haven't done a thing wrong. I am blocked on the fanstuff wiki. And I could swear upon anything at all that I am not doing anything wrong.--H*bad 17:21, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Ps you may have to unblock the people who are doing that horrible joke of having the same user accounts as the NSMC bots but only for a little second and that may unblock me becaue they have been using my IP address somehow.--H*bad 17:24, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, it looks like you have been autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by a blocked username. The block expires 16:12, 5 March 2006 (UTC). If you'd like to edit before then, contact a fanstuff sysop.
Also, something peculiar to note is that your IP is shared by H*bad, H*Bad1, Godzillarunner, Darth Homestar runner, 1041327735NSMC87789216, 1376523585NSMC822710324, and 1376523585NSMC822710325 on the fanstuff wiki, as well as 01857184578NSMC19576857318597 and Godzillarunner here on the Knowledge Base. Can you explain this? -- Tom 21:17, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
NSMC!? Are you serious? — Seriously (Talk) 22:00, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Seriously, do you have anything constructive to contribute to this conversation? If not, please stay out of it. Thanks. -- Tom 22:05, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
I can explain a few of them like H*bad1, I logged on to him because my friend asked me to so I could take care of the whole "he is my sock puppet", which he is not (long story I will explain later if you want). For Darth Homestar runner I found out what his password was and I guess it showed my IP as his which reminds me to tell him to change his pass. any ways, Godzillarunner I made him, which I do admit that I made him, but for a good reason, I forgot my password and thought thats ok I will just make a new user account, a few hours later I remembered what my password was. You can delete Godzillarunner if you want. Like I said it is a long story. Plus to make sure that you know I have no reason to do something stupid like troll or whatever.--H*bad 22:49, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
You still haven't explained why or how NSMC-style usernames were created with your IP, one of which was even used for vandalism. — It's dot com 23:12, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
First off I didn't even know that one of them was used for vandalism. Second off (someone hates me, which is also a long story), I am not that type of person. I am an upright person, but you know what if you want to pin this sort of thing on me then fine, but just so you know I didn't do anything wrong.--H*bad 23:18, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Could you please explain how the NSMC-style usernames were created with your IP? -- Tom 23:23, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
I wish I could but I don't know much about computer programing stuff, I am only 15.--H*bad 23:25, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
What is the verdict, am I guilty of making the NSMCs and Darth Homestar runner or are you going with the truth and saying not guilty (This is manly so people will leave me alone on whether or not I can be trusted, which I hope I can be trusted by you and all the other sysop/Admins).--H*bad 14:38, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
Could you please explain how the NSMC-style usernames were created with your IP? It doesn't require any computer programming knowledge to create a wiki account, nor to explain how wiki accounts were created with your IP. -- Tom 19:00, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
I would if I could but I can't. I would tell you if I knew, but right now isn't fair, because right now I am getting punished for something that I wasn't even doing. The thing is that I was going to work to try and be a nominee for being a sysop but now I guess I will never be one.--H*bad 19:28, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
How are you still being punished? The block on the fanstuff wiki expired over three hours ago. How are you not able to tell me how your computer was used to create those accounts? Are you not the only person who has access to the computer that has knowledge of NSMC-style account names? -- Tom 19:36, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
Well people just will not leave me alone any more. I have no more computers that can log onto the internet. O of course I just figured it out. I will call my suspect and he shall most likely answer my question with a No, because of that he can't lie very well I will be able to know whether or not he is the culprit.--H*bad 20:21, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
The culprit is... H*bad1, he was the only one it could be. One day he came over and I showed him this site. He created a new user on my computer. In fact he came over a few more times in which he most likely then created the NSMC accounts that I think are stupid. Man I am good. When I called him just now instead of denying that he didn't create them he said that he did, like I said he can't lie so I could tell that he meant it.--H*bad 20:29, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
20:21 comment: Won't leave you alone? You are the one pressing the matter on my talk page. If you are the only one with knowledge of NSMC-style accounts and access to the computer that created those accounts, I fail to see how you weren't the one who created them. But it doesn't matter anyway. You are free to drop the whole issue and go quietly about your business editing the fanstuff wiki as H*bad. There's no reason to do that, really. Leaving "red links" in context is often helpful. Not to mention that editing other users' comments is often frowned upon and can at times change the intent of a message. -- Tom 07:49, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for explaining the target links.

I didn't know that you could use the id attribute with target links. There seems to be a bug in my web browser that is preventing it from rendering the target links on that page. It renders most target links correctly; it worked with the test page I made in the sandbox. I kept editing the T-shirt page because thought that it must have been something wrong with with the code, but it appears the only problem was in my browser. I just checked the T-shirt page in Firefox and the target links work just fine in it. Sorry for editing that page so much. Thanks again, Jecowa 07:54, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Ditto. I, like Qermaq and Joshua, have kindly (for the most part) explained to him your meaning. He ahs realized, but it's tough for him. Being blocked for a month when you are as committed to the wiki as much as he is is practically unbearable. Believe me, I know. But he's learning, and that's good. Although eventually Super Sam, to stop the fighting, threatened to protect the page. Once again, keeping you informed. — Seriously (Talk) 23:06, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

RE:Disrespect

I wasn't trying to be meen. I was just puting him on my userpage. In memeory of him. Sorry if that was wrong to do. --TheThin 21:31, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

I didn't say it was mean. I said it was disrespectful. Either way, like It's dot com said, even if common sense didn't tell you that it was completely inappropriate, the fact that a sysop removed it should have given you an idea. You are treading on very thin ice and your disregard for several other policies of our community has all of us keeping a very close watch on your edits. Be careful, and I'd advise you that in the future, if you have even the slightest doubt about an edit you are planning on making, you bring it to the talk page first. -- Tom 02:22, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Timestamp

How do you get your timestamp to appear in your time zone? --Dacheatbot · Communicate 17:41, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

You can't fix timestamps. You can only make the time displayed on recent changes in your local time by setting it in your preferences. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 18:48, 22 April 2006 (BST)
Look at your own timestamp --Dacheatbot · Communicate 17:49, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I entered that one manually. You can't customise the timestamp created with ~~~~ or ~~~~~ though. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 17:52, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Dacheatbot: We actually don't want people to use their own time zone in timestamps on talk pages (or STUFF or wherever), as this is quite confusing. Having everyone use the UTC standard gives us an absolute time to refer to, and only requires one conversion (that is, you just have to know what your time is relative to UTC, not how your time zone matches to some unfamiliar abbreviation). — It's dot com 03:29, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
I've been using a UTC clock script in my monobook.js to make timestamp comparisons more convenient. You can get the script at Help:UTC clock. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:18, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
That doesn't work for me. Maybe it's my browser, I have Safari.--Dacheatbot · Communicate 01:00, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
What timezone are you in? -- Tom 01:19, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Pacific. But the clock doesn't even appear and now my customized user bar won't work.--Dacheatbot · Communicate 04:37, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Try this: take every UTC time you see and then subtract seven hours in your head to get the time in your time zone. And when daylight saving time ends later in the year, just remember to switch to subtracting eight hours. -- Tom 06:45, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
I still don't get why the clock won't work--Dacheatbot · Communicate 15:01, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Works now--Dacheatbot · Communicate 03:40, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

So, what — just specify a different category?

That was just the best one available, if there is a more appropriate one feel free to switch it out. Ideally I think there should be a video screenshot super category, and have tv, film, vodcast etc subcats, but I am not personally very active in category space. - cohesion 08:11, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

So, what — just specify a different category in the template? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 16:32, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

See, my issue with that tag is that it was created to be a very general umbrella that fit over a whole bunch of stuff. We know exactly where each one of our screenshots are coming from, namely homestarrunner.com, an Internet site. We don't have all that other stuff to worry about here. The same arguement can be applied to {{character-artwork}}, sure, the images are character-artwork, but they aren't from a comic book, video game, or animated television program or film, they're from homestarrunner.com. I don't think continuing to use {{web-screenshot}} is a problem. -- Tom 00:40, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
All righty then. I'll go undo the ones I already did. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 04:33, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Homsar: banned on IRC

Hi, Tom. Nice to see you. Sorry to bother you, but I was wondering about Homsar999. He says that he was banned from the IRC channel. He says he was banned because he impersonated Lunar Jesters as a joke. He also says, however, that you and JoeyDay think he impersonated many more people. I usually would have no reason to not trust you and Joey, but Homsar999 has always been nice to me, and he seems to have a good sense of judgment. If you can, can you please elaborate on the situation so I won't have to keep choosing sides between my friends? Thanks a lot. Sincerely, — Seriously (Talk) 22:30, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, he is banned from the IRC channel. No, he wasn't banned just for impersonating Lunar Jesters. Yes, Joey Day and I know that he impersonated many more users. I don't really care if he has been nice to you or not, and I certainly don't care about your character assessment of him.. -- Tom 02:33, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
That's fine with me. I just wanted to know the info so he'll stop drilling all this stuff into my head about you and JoeyDay being evil and such. I'm really glad that you managed to shed a bit of light on the situation. Thanks so much. — Seriously (Talk) 16:41, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
In your first post you stated that "he seems to have a good sense of judgment." Here you just stated that he drills stuff into your head about myself and Joey being evil. So despite his constant insistence that the two of us are evil, you think he has a good sense of judgement? So you think his assessment that Joey and I are evil is correct? If you don't like us or this website, please feel free to leave. -- Tom 17:22, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
I didn't say that I hated the website, and that I thought he was correct. He just seemed like a nice guy. It was only after you had first replied that I told him about your comment, and it was only then that he called you guys evil. I listened to you and JoeyDay, thus, he went kinda crazy. Now that you've cleared things up, you've also cleared up the fact that he does not have a good sense ogf judgment. — Seriously (Talk) 17:38, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
I did not say that you said that you hated the website. I merely drew logical conclusions based on the information available to me. I knew that you stated that you trusted his judgement and I knew you stated that he insisted that Joey and I were evil. You did not tell me the sequence of events until just now. Also, you led me to believe that he had told you on more than one occasion that Joey and I were evil because you used the word "drilling" which in the way you used it means something done repeatedly over a period of time. I implore you from this moment forward to always think before you type and to not leave out such important information. Do not exclude facts that are relevant to the topic at hand. -- Tom 17:54, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
