Welcome

Hey there, you accidentally deleted Sam the Man's welcome template. I fixed it for you. Keep on tranglin' Loafing 20:28, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

No, don't delete my post. He clicked the edit button on a user page, and upon clicking it, didn't go back to the regular page, and to top it all off, he deleted a template and put "BALEETED" in it's place. --Jangles5150 20:36, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Jangles, I think it was an honest mistake — Sam didn't substitute his template, so when Sam said "Feel free to delete this message when you're done reading it", TheDude probably thought he was supposed to delete the actual template. TheDude, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was an honest mistake. Welcome again to the wiki, and sorry for the confusion! Trey56 20:37, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I didn't do it maliciously, I just don't know what the hell I'm doing yet. I thought I had that one, though, I'm a little disappointed.

How do you do that stampy thing?

TheDude 20:39, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

oooohhhhh, toight pannnts

Yup, you can sign your posts with a timestamp by typing four tildes (~~~~) after your post (as it looks like you've figured out). Let me know if you have any other questions! Trey56 20:41, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

sweet. thanks for having my back, you guys. sorry sam. "don't bite the newcomers" was especially awesome. TheDude 20:43, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

on second though, only trey and the loafer. thanks trey and loafer. is this majorly against The Rules? (this probably annoys recent changes junkies, right?)TheDude 20:50, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, Man. It was just, you know, like, a mistake. Also ,is your username related to the movie The Big Lebowski in any way? Sorry for the confusion.--Jangles5150 20:53, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Duh! I was also considering JackieTreehorn and The Dude Abides. TheDude 21:02, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Hi The Dude, one of the purposes of the welcome template is to provide links to various resources to help you become familiar with the wiki. Just as a quick start, if you'd like to edit your user page, I'd suggest you read up a little on HRWiki:User space and Help:Editing. Fancier stuff takes a bit to master, but many of us are willing to help or provide specific advice to those who end up in a pinch. Good luck! --Stux 20:57, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks stucky, m'man. TheDude 21:02, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

User page

In reply to this message what kinds of things do you want to put on your user page? There are some ideas at HRWiki:User space, but let me know if you're thinking of something else. Trey56 20:58, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks trey. please tell me this is a super sweet phish username, since your page says your name is actually dave. TheDude 21:03, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Yup, named after Mr. Anastasio himself :) Trey56 21:04, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Little Help?

I keep getting permission errors when I try uploading a file... any suggestions? Thanks, TheDude 04:01, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Are you trying to upload a bitmap (BMP) file? If so, you'll have to change it to a PNG, GIF, or JPEG format first. (If that's not fixing it, let me know) Trey56 04:03, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Just going to the "Upload File" page is giving me a permission error. I don't know, man. TheDude 04:07, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
If you haven't autoconfirmed your account with an email address, do that — that should fix the problem. (You can do this at Special:Preferences.) Trey56 04:09, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Upon further discussion with Phlip, I may have been wrong about you needing to autoconfirm your email address. So, if this doesn't work, try going to Special:Upload, and paste here the error message it's giving you. Trey56 04:16, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

This is what I've been getting: Permission error

From Homestar Runner Wiki Jump to: navigation, search The action you have requested is limited to users in one of the groups "autoconfirmed", "Bots", "Sysops".

Return to Main Page. ThanksTheDude 04:18, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Okay, you're going to have to wait a couple days — there's a delay between user registration and when you can upload files, to prevent people from creating accounts solely for the purpose of uploading inappropriate images.
Try again at this time tomorrow, and see if you're able to upload your files; I think you should be autoconfirmed then. Best, Trey56 04:22, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Okay, thanks a lot man. TheDude 04:29, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
The Dude: I'm wondering if the error message you got stated anything about new users not being able to upload files for a couple of days? If not, maybe there's a way to ask that the error message be made clearer. --Stux 14:13, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Good morning. No, it doesn't clarify at all. I confirmed my email, but it still gave an error stating I had to be (at the very least) autoconfirmed. Is this unusual or is everyone restricted from uploading for their first day? TheDude 14:16, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
No, it's normal. Autoconfirmation happens around a day or so after you sign up... as Stux said, it's so that vandals who create new user accounts can't easily vandalise images (templates on the main page, like {{whatsnew}}, and page moves, are also disabled for new users, for the same reason). Try it again tomorrow, it should be fine. Incidentally, autoconfirmation has nothing to do with confirming your email address... you only need to do that if you want to enable email-related things (letting users send you mail through Special:Emailuser/TheDude, getting notifications if your talk page is edited, etc). --phlip TC 14:46, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Yup, sorry abou the confusion about email addresses above. Trey56 14:47, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Just for clarification, it was Trey56, not I, who explained that this feature is a measure to hinder vandals. --Stux 16:09, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

The Chair

I found what I believe to be an oversight, but it is beyond my (current) abilities to fix it. In The Chair there is a comment and picture about the "photo" of SB's parents in the Easter Eggs section, but this isn't really an egg... unless there's some strange convention about using the decompiler that I'm not aware of. Help out the new guy? TheDude 14:48, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

An Easter egg is a hidden feature in a toon that's intended for viewers to find. Almost always, these are accessible through a mouse click on a certain word, etc., but on very rare occasions, The Brothers Chaps put something within the Flash file for "********" viewers to find. Interestingly, they talk a little about this very Easter egg that you noticed in the chair in Georgia Tech - 26 Apr 2007. Normally, we don't list oddities on pages that result from decompiling or manipulating the Flash file, but in the rare circumstance that these things are intended for viewers to find, we do. Now that you mention it, we should probably reword Easter egg a little bit to reflect this. Laters, Trey56 14:55, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
In regards to changing the text in the above discussion: I believe his intent was to censor that specific word (probably due to its less than honorable origins). While that word has become part of modern day speech, I guess it might still be considered an offensive word by some perhaps? If that is the case, I have replaced the word with asterisks. The Dude: if you are censoring text, please spell that out exactly in the edit summary, since it is generally frowned upon when people edit other people's text. DeFender: I know your edit summaries are improving, but I still wanted to give a bit of advice: when reverting edits of this nature it is better to mention why you are reverting in a direct but polite tone. i.e.: Users are not supposed to modify other people's posts. That way the summaries sound less confrontational. --Stux 15:04, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
Good advice. Thanks. DeFender1031 15:10, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
It certainly wasn't me. Censor, reveal yourself! Um, stux, did a message before yours get baleeted? To Trey: I didn't think the comment was out of line or in any way inappropriate, but if there are users so conservative in their views that this rubs 'em the wrong way, I'll take the bleep on my page like a man. Signature

Cool sig :) Trey56 01:28, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks bro, quite proud of it. I guess it's a 24 hour restriction. Now I get to try it out TheDude 01:29, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Ooh, I think you need to put {{User:TheDude/sig}} in the "Signature:" line at Special:Preferences. Trey56 01:30, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks... lets see if I got it straight. {{User:TheDude/sig}} 01:32, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Uh-oh.

Go back to your preferences page and check the "Raw signatures (without automatic link)" box... Trey56 01:33, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Your indentations are impeccable, sir. Thanks! TheDude 01:36, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Used to be in Jerusalem

Hi Dude! I've read your user page and I noticed that you said that you used to live in Jerusalem. I'm Israeli myself and was wondering if you are too. Do you know Hebrew? I've seen you made some nice edits and contributions. Keep it up! Elcool (talk)(contribs) 21:27, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Dr Pepper

Hey The Dude. I was very pleased to see that you spelled Dr Pepper correctly. When I was in the City last year, I had trouble finding any that tasted just right ("just right" being how it tastes in Texas, naturally). A lot of the time I had problems just finding it at all. (If Spider-Man 2 is to be believed, it's everywhere. This was not my experience. Come to think of it, I didn't notice any web-slinging vigilantes there, either.) I imagine you have resources than I. Well, keep on tranglin'. — It's dot com 03:49, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
