French Translation

Hi Trey. Many thanks for the help, I think I will need it sometimes. Some jokes or puns in English (in the toons, I mean, of course ^^) are really funny, but when someone asked me "What does that mean in French ?", I couldn't translate it while keeping the original joke.

Wow, thanks for that Iron Cup...of Brunswick Stew, Trey. I'd like to thank my parents because I wouldn't be there without them, and also my dog, because-Okay that's enough. Anyway, this award will give me the strength to finish all the other...hm...200 untranslated toons ?...I still have to finish all of those Sbemails anyway. Well, let's get to work !

Please let me thank you for this award. I thought that my work was pretty useless (I never receive any feedbacks about it, except yours </emo>) but it seems that it's not. Yay !

A couple transcript questions

Hey there, Meuhcoin. Recently, a couple pseudo-French phrases have come up in toons, and I was curious to see if there was any meaning at all to them:

• Email your funeral — "But you never got to see my Chaup au Fan!" (note that the spelling was taken from this Easter egg)
• Drive-Thru — "We'd like another bottle of Château Prétende 1974, please."

My own thoughts about the second one are that "prétende" isn't a real adjective, and so to coincide with Strong Bad's pronunciation, it should be spelled without the accent aigu, and since château is a masculine noun, it should be spelled without the e at the end. Do you agree, and do either of things actually have any meaning in French? Thanks for your time! Trey56 16:37, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Trey!

Here are my thoughts :

Chaup au Fan is supposed to be French? Didn't know that! When I tried to translate it for the French subtitles, I couldn't find any meaning, so I just left it like that. Chaup isn't a word in French (in English either apparently), so I don't know what it's supposed to mean...Same goes for "fan" (the word exists in French, but it came from the English, so it has the same meaning..Well, it's used to describe a fan of a sport for example, not the thing that blows air!). Doesn't make sense for me in this context anyway.
I tried to found a meaning for chaup, but no online encyclopedia or dictionary, English or French, seems to know that word...So until someone can figure out what it's supposed to mean, we're stuck here.

As for the "Château Prétende"...Prétende isn't an adjective but it does exists in French. Although it can't be used in a middle of a sentence like that...
Anyway, in French it has an accent aigu, so I would keep it like that to keep the pseudo-French feeling, as Strong Bad says it with a more or less French pronunciation (Pretend rhythms with "end" in English, right?), but uses it as the English word. Even if château is a masculine word, Strong Bad clearly pronounces the "e" at the end of the word. That may not be a mistake : if the "Château" that produces this wine is called "Prétende", then this is correct. As the "P" in "Prétende" is a capital letter, it should be considered as a proper noun, so the whole thing is correct.

Hm...As you see, I don't quite understand everything either. Hope that helped you !

No problem, it's always good when you can help someone ^^. Although I'm still confused about this "chaup au fan". I've done some more research and the only thing I could find...was the email and the H*R Wiki page about it! Well, I guess it's going to be a...mystery *X-Files music*!

Hey there Meuhcoin — I got your email saying you might be interested in working on the French version of the welcome portal. Awesome! If you want to get started, just copy the content of User:Trey56/HRWiki:Welcome/LANGUAGE CODE and paste it into a new page, probably at User:Meuhcoin/HRWiki:Welcome/fr. We'll move the translated pages to the HRWiki namespace soon, but that's a good place for it now. Then, go ahead and translate anything you have time for!

Oh, oops, too late ^^ I just finished to translate the Welcome Page, I just need to correct some mistakes and it will be done. That page was created some time ago, and I tried to show it to French friends, but they weren't interested, so I just left it here. I didn't think someone would find it :D .

At a glance, it looks awesome — now I'll read through it more carefully, for my own fun :) I plan to move these to the main namespace soon, and I imagine it won't be too long before the links are added to the Main Page. A couple quick questions

Hey, Meuhcoin — got a couple quick questions for you. The French welcome page you made will soon link to a list of toons with French subtitles akin to this prototype. There will be two links for each toon: one reading "play" and linking to the toon on homestarrunner.com, and one reading "local viewer" and linking to the toon in the local viewer.

My guesses for the French words that should be on these buttons are "passer" for "play" and "visionneuse locale" for "local viewer". Would you recommend different words?

Hey Trey.

"Visionneuse locale" is good for "local viewer", but "passer" wouldn't make any sense in this context. "Lecture" or "Jouer" would be more appropriate, that depends if you absolutely need a verb or if you can use a noun. "Lecture" is what is displayed on a VCR or whatever when you press the "Play" button, so that could be better to use it. But you're the man in charge here, so you can choose whichever you want!

Hey. I hate to make an entire talk page message about this, but this bugs me too much. :)

I just thought I'll translate more toons when I saw the trailer for SBCG4AP. Maybe they'll sell the game in France, and then people will want to see the website and the toons, and then they'll need subtitles! That's a great plan, right? Right? Yeah. Well anyway, it's been a while since I've done anything for the Wiki, but it's good to see that this place still works as good as ever.
