Hi again MHarrington.  I wanted to remind you again about the importance of using edit summaries.  It makes it really hard to see what is going on in a page's history (like the one for the {{pl|l=http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=Popular_Music_References&action=history Popular Music References page}}) without having to individually tread through every edit.  It makes it harder to gague what the intention behind your edit is, and it also lets newer users think it's okay to make edits without summaries.  This makes the overall job of maintaining the wiki a little bit harder, so I'd like to strongly encourage you to make full use of the edit summary line. Thanks! --[[User:Stux|Stux]] 17:27, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome!

Welcome to the Homestar Runner Wiki! We're glad to have you as a member. If you need any help, feel free to ask anyone on the welcoming committee. You can also post questions on the FAQ talk page.

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • If you need general information, editing tips, or answers to frequently asked questions, check out the help page.
  • Before you do any significant editing, be sure to familiarize yourself with our wiki standards.
  • Read up on the rules and guidelines for your user page.
  • If you're not sure what you can do to help out, head over to The Stick.
  • If you're looking for more community interaction, you can also register over at our forum.
  • Above all, be sure to be bold and have fun!

Feel free to delort this message when you're done reading it. (In general, it's considered poor etiquette to remove others' comments from your talk page, but this message is just here to be helpful. It's fine to remove it once you don't need it.) I hope this information is helpful, and that you'll have a good experience contributing to our knowledge-base and our community.

Sincerely,
Heimstern Läufer and "The Homestar Runner Wiki Welcoming Committee", 06:47, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Other welcome

Hey MHarrington, I noticed nobody really welcomed you yet. So there's a welcome from Heimstern, with the guidelines, links and everything. Thanks for contributing, hope to see you around the wiki, and feel free to make a userpage about yourself sometime. Thunderbird 06:50, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Exclamation! Marks!

Hey! Just in case you were thinking of embarking on a project to overhaul exclamation-point usage, I thought I'd chime in. While I like many of the changes you made to That A Ghost (especially the addition of {wheezily}), there are some that I'd prefer keeping as exclamations (don't worry, I'll take care of it). I'm reminded of an anonymous user in the fall who made similar revisions to quite a few pages (I can't help but wonder—could that have been you?); at the time I said "We don't want it to look like Mary Worth, but it's not like [exclamation marks] are inherently wrong. I tend to go by the character's expression as a guideline." —AbdiViklas 03:16, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

That said, I am impressed with your use of the interrobang. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 05:42, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Userpage

Hi MHarrington. I appreciate your recent contributions to the projects, but was wondering if you would consider making a brief userpage? Seeing Recent Changes full of edits made by a red linked username is a bit... Disconcerting. It's totally up to you, but I'm sure lots of us would appreciate getting to know a bit about you. Also this is kind of a minor thing, but please try and use the "Show preview" button a bit more, to decrease the number of "tweaking" edits. All in all though, thanks for being such a great user, and keep up the good work. EDIT: Thanks. ;) Thunderbird 06:13, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Old-Timey

MHarrington, please note how I have deleted the "old-timey" template three times just today, I believe. Also note how I have gone and reverted every single one of your edits adding that template to assorted pages without so much as a mention of this project or waiting for feedback in the least. Next time you choose to embark on a project such as this, make sure you get permission first and more importantly, make sure it hasn't already been done. I hope you've learned through this. — Lapper (talk) 06:18, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

In case you haven't seen it yet, we discussed this template here a while ago, and decided to delete it. I did link to that page when I first deleted it... --phlip TC 07:14, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
While I would have chosen the word "concensus" over "permission", Lapper is correct. Major changes should not be unilaterally implemented. While no changes can be undone, it's wise to weigh the "un-do-ability" of any new change before deciding to post for comments or simply tackling it. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 09:20, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Featured Article Noms

Is there some reason you added every form of Strong Bad page to the featured article nominations? Not all of them deserve to be featured, imo, and indiscriminately nominating articles will simply slow the process down. — Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 06:59, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Why must you be so negative about me?

What is wrong with my contributions? I'm just trying to help. Why do you hate my additions?

Actually, M, most of your edits are quite good. There are times when we all make edits which are not going to stay, though. Don't worry, you're doing well.
BTW, I noticed you were marking edits minor. That should be reserved for reverting vandalism, spelling corrections, formatting, that sort of the thing. But if you change the content of the page, even a little, it's a major edit. See Help:Editing for the whole shebang. Again, keep up the good work! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 22:17, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

What I'm just trying to explain is that most things I send in are deleted. I'm just trying to help. Maybe you can give me a hand. Can you tell what I can and can't do so that no one is quite so objectionable about my efforts? Thanks.

Let me be the first to say that I immensely appreciate your efforts. You tirelessly work to improve this wiki without spending the majority of your time on User or Talk pages. Looking at your contributions, you've made over 400 article contributions, and only 8 talk edis! While applauding your efforts on being such an efficient worker, I would suggest that being involved in community discussion more will help you choose to create excellent articles that benifit the wiki to a greater degree. You seem like a very intelligent, level headed editor, one that would be well respected when giving insights and suggestions in discussions. Often there can be more work to be done cleaning up pages, such as the NYU Talk, rather than creating new ones. As a minor suggestion, getting into the habit of signing your talk page posts with four tildes ~~~~ will help you make a bigger name for yourself here. I just want to reiterate just how much I do appreciate your selfless work here though, and I hope that you continue your efforts. Thunderbird 17:44, 1 June 2006 (UTC) P.S. Have you considered providing an email address under your preferences? Your email will remain anonymous to those sending you emails, as they are sent through the wiki unless you reply to them.
I posted this on the article's discussion page, but you might have missed it. You are a good writer, MHarrington. You do a good job of formatting articles right off the bat. You even include all the necessary categories upon creation. However, many people seem to be trying so hard to think of an article to write that often times the article doesn't have a solid foundation of true references from the site. Again, I encourage you to continue contributing, mostly by improving existing articles. E.L. Cool has also suggested that you can help us improve the stub articles. —BazookaJoe 18:01, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, the truth is I did try to improve the stub articles, but I just can't find anything to improve them with. MHarrington 06:07, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Feet/Inches

Re: this edit: have you ever seen This Is Spinal Tap? A similar mixup between inches and feet led to a rock and roll disaster. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:05, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

I never thought of that. Thanks. MHarrington 17:59, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] inprogress

Please, if you're not going to be editing a transcript for a significant amount of time, remove the "inprogress" tag from the section. The transcript for keep cool was deadlocked for an hour when you left the tag but did not make any edits. --Jay (Talk) 22:29, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I suddenly realized my mistake when I noticed that you were not the one who replaced the inprogress tag. My mistake. --Jay (Talk) 22:32, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Re: http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=cliffhangers&curid=27766&diff=368053&oldid=368051&rcid=318126 - did you see the "inprogress" template? Please don't edit sections which have that template. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:26, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
I did see the inprogress template, but why can't I edit sections that have that template? Isn't that why it's there? To add in more? MHarrington 02:36, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
No, it says "please don't edit", because someone else is working on it. There are different templates, and the one you were thinking of is the "cleanup" template. This one was the "inprogress" template. Loafing 02:40, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Forums vs. Discussions

I've been placing speculations on future things on the website in their respective discussion pages, but everyone keeps saying to put them in the forum. What's the difference between them? Because I certainly do not know. MHarrington 02:03, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Talk pages are mainly for discussing changes to the article and so on. --DorianGray
But why can't speculations be added there? MHarrington 02:13, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Because it's distracting us from what we do at the wiki. That's why we have these different places like the forum and the fanstuff wiki. The forum is for any type of chatter and speculation, while the fanstuff wiki is for all kinds of made up stuff. The Homestar Runner wiki is a knowledge base that documents facts about the Homestar Runner universe, not speculation. Hope this helps. Loafing 02:16, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Certainly, if it's speculating on what we ought to do with the page, post it on Talk. If it has to do with editing the article at all, it belongs in the Talk. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:21, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Yes. It's just questions like "I wonder what will be on the DVD" or "Wouldn't it be cool if TBC did this and that" that are off-topic for here. Loafing 02:29, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I'm afraid I may have some difficulty getting onto the forums. I may not have permission from my parents to do this. What should I do? Should I ask permission or keep them in the dark? MHarrington 05:33, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Yes please, ask your parents first. You can tell them that the forum is basically a part of this wiki, and the same rules regarding offensive language etc. apply (somebody correct me if I'm wrong!). There is a great overlap between wiki and forum people, and it's hosted by the same folks. I see no reason why your parents shouldn't allow you to join the forum if they are happy with the wiki :-)  Loafing 05:49, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
You're right. But I'm just worried they may say no. Plus, I'm very wary of any troublemakers on the Internet. I'm just wondering if there is anywhere else I can place my speculations besides just the forums. MHarrington 05:51, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Well, it's smart to know there is absolutely no guarantee of safety or privacy on the Internet. I have advised parents in the past to consider how they'd handle their child alone in Times Square at night - monitor your child online as you would there. However, you'd be hard pressed to find an overall nicer bunch of folks than the regs at the Forum (or here). While caution is merited, I think the risk is limited. The mods here and at the Forum are diligent and troublemakers are dealt with. The topic is both interesting to a milder sensibility and obscure enough to not be attractive to a person who might be a predator. Overall, I'm of the mind you'd be absolutely safe on the Forum, though I of course cannot guarantee that anywhere, even in your own home! (And as far as my credentials, I'm a former public-school educator with extensive experience in computer tech so I do know what I'm talking about.) Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:42, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] You = Miguel?

Are you Miguel on the Fanstuff wiki? If so, are you going to finish this? --Trogga 18:24, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

I got busy. I'm not sure if I will finish it. MHarrington 23:04, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Merging

How do I merge articles? MHarrington 03:06, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, first you wait for consensus in Talk regarding whether it should be or not. Once that's done, I'm afraid the only way is the long way - manually editing the articles in question. What articles were you thinking about? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:35, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm talking about merging the Racquet Games and Badminton articles and also the Homestar's Pants and Homestar's Daisy Dukes articles. MHarrington 05:47, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] your recent edit

regarding this edit, why did you change the order? DeFender1031 23:46, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Because that's the order of appearance according to Strong Bad. Just watch the email yourself, you'll see what I mean. MHarrington 23:48, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Well that makes sense actually. Umm... {searching for right thing to say now] Keep up... the good work? DeFender1031 23:52, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Iron Cup of Brunswick Stew!

TA-DA MHarrington!

Hey, MHarrington. I saw you've been making tons of good edits, like creating Strong Bad Smiling, Strong Mad Smiling, Strong Sad Smiling, Lasers,Douglas, Mottos and Slogans, Strong Bad Email By Closing, References To Icons (Halloween Costumes), Mustaches and strongbad email.exe Disc Five. So, I wanted to award you (drumroll...) THE IRON CUP OF BRUNSWICK STEW.

This award, the first on HRWiki, is given to recognize good contributions and to let people know that their hard work is seen and appreciated. It was given to The Cheat by Strong Bad for his good work on New Boots.

Keep up the awesome work, MHarrington! User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 21:08, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for awarding me. If I keep up the good work, will I get awarded with a Trophy full o' Steakumms?

[edit] Congrats

Hey, I have to say, excellent work on Popular Music References, and to tell you, if you didn't already have a iron cup, I probably would give you one too. Keep up the good work!--~ SlipStream 03:09, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Oh, just so you know, much of the info I got is from the artists' respective wiki articles. MHarrington 03:26, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Halloween Costumes

Just dropping by to tell you how much I like your Halloween costume ideas. Homsar as Waldo and Strong Sad as Gary Brolsma are my favorites. :-) Has Matt? (talk) 12:57, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Edit Summaries

Hi MHarrington, I've noticed that many of your main namespace edits do not have an edit summary. I would like to encourage you to make better use of the edit summary feature even if it means having a brief one or two-word summary. This would help the other editors have a better idea of what your edits did at a glance. Since you've been a good established editor for some time I wanted to provide this little bit of advice to help us run the wiki a tad bit smoother. Thanks! --Stux 19:29, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Well, I just added another one, about Marzipan's Old Mouth, but I forgot to add the summary for them. I didn't realize my error until it was too late. MHarrington 02:47, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
No worries, it can take a bit to grow into the habit. It is just good to see better editing habits. Keep on tranglin'! --Stux 03:37, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi again MHarrington. I wanted to remind you again about the importance of using edit summaries. It makes it really hard to see what is going on in a page's history (like the one for the Popular Music References page) without having to individually tread through every edit. It makes it harder to gague what the intention behind your edit is, and it also lets newer users think it's okay to make edits without summaries. This makes the overall job of maintaining the wiki a little bit harder, so I'd like to strongly encourage you to make full use of the edit summary line. Thanks! --Stux 17:27, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Have you tried editing? Gnome work? Wearing a baseball cap and putting punctuation on outside your quotes?

Hey there, I've noticed that a couple of times you have moved punctuation into quotes. Our policy here is to keep the punctuation outside the quotes. Hope that helps. — Defender1031*Talk 17:34, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Okay, sorry. MHarrington 21:45, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Archiving FAS

Hey there, I think it would be best if we leave the discussions on the FAS page until the featured article in question is completely off the main page, that is, until after 00:00 on Monday, UTC. That way, any time people wonder, "Hmm, why is that on the main page?", they can check the page and find out without looking in the archive. It's not a big deal, so I don't think it's worth the time to undo this week's archiving, but I think that would be a better way to do it in the future. Let me know if you agree with this. Thanks. Heimstern Läufer 01:54, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Well, I guess you're right, but I still think we need to include the upcoming article at a later time. MHarrington 02:08, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
I don't understand what you mean by including the upcoming article at a later time. Heimstern Läufer 02:10, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
I meant to do the article for the next week as that week approaches, like what I'm doing right now. MHarrington 02:12, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
You mean the writeup, then? Heimstern Läufer 02:13, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Yeah. But can we also add the writeup in question to the featured articles page, even though it's not quite around Sunday yet? Because that's when the article in question is usually displayed on the main page. MHarrington 02:20, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Sounds fine to me. Anything relating to putting up the new featured article is fine to do a bit in advance (though don't forget that disputed cases should be decided by a sysop). It's just that we should wait until after 00:00 UTC to do anything related to taking down the old one (at least in my opinion). Cheers. Heimstern Läufer 02:25, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. MHarrington 02:32, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
No problem. And thank you for doing the writeups recently. It's been really good to have a break from that. Heimstern Läufer 02:33, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
You're welcome. And forgive me for saying so, but it seems like I'm the only one who cares about the featured articles anymore. All (well, most) of the additions for the weeks ahead are all my ideas. MHarrington 03:00, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, umm, I'm not sure that's quite a fair assessment. You see, you tend to add those suggestions quite a ways in advance, almost at the very first available moment. So I'm no sure it has much to do with your being the only one to care; I think many people might make suggestions if they weren't all already made so quickly. Heimstern Läufer 03:07, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, in fairness, I guess you're right. MHarrington 03:09, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, and I see you've jumped right in to make another suggestion this week. I know you're eager to see certain articles featured, but I'd like to ask you to please consider waiting longer and giving others a chance to make some suggestions. It appears to me that for several weeks in a row, you've made the first suggestion just about as soon as the it was ten weeks in advance. This doesn't give anyone else a chance. There's no pressing need to start discussion on an week ten weeks before it occurs, so let's just let it rest sometimes and give someone else a turn to make the first suggestion. Heimstern Läufer 14:20, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
I'm sorry. I'll hold off on doing more of these for a while. MHarrington 15:25, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Is it okay if I were to add a suggestion for Week 52 when it rolls around, please? MHarrington 18:11, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

I didn't see you'd posted this, or I'd have replied earlier. Sure, go on ahead. Heimstern Läufer 10:54, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Since Week 52 would be the week we feature a Decemberween toon, I'm thinking of Decemberween Short Shorts, particularly since we've done Summer Short Shorts already. MHarrington 15:03, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Halloween Screamshots

LOL, I'm so smart aren't I? Scream? Get it? . . . . . . er, *ahem* Yeah. Anyways, this is the first time I've tried a hand at uploading screenshots. Are they good are should any have retakes? -WarthogDemon 06:12, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

No, they're good. Now all that needs to be done now is to just shrink them down to proper size, like all the others. MHarrington 06:15, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Ah, okay no prob. I was trying to get them as big as they could be and still look good. I'll make them match. -WarthogDemon 06:18, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] {{commentary}}

Hello. I see you added the commentary tag to a lot of the email pages, and it looks like you've never been here. Could you please add the correct template for those articles? MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 11:56, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Some Friendly Advice

When you add info on a DVD commentary to an article about a running gag, you think you could go into more detail about how the commentary references that gag? I think it would help the readers better than simply typing, "In that toon's commentary, one of the speakers made a reference to this gag". BBG 03:04, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Well, I try to as best I can. It's not that simple, though. MHarrington 07:59, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Sorry if this comes off as rude and/or impatient, but will the Commentary Transcripts for Date Nite and Let Us Give TANKS! be completed soon? The DVD is almost 2 years old. BBG 03:10, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Bad Bad Guy, if you don't want to come off as impatient or rude, I suggest not bugging people who volunteer their time at the wiki to finish projects according your timetable. Otherwise, it's pretty much inevitable that you will in fact come off as both impatient and rude. Cheers. Heimstern Läufer 03:19, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Okay. BBG 03:26, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SBCG4AP Response Articles

The caption your article uses for Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective Responses and the picture it uses for 8-Bit is Enough Responses (The Field) no longer match the pictures and captions for the real articles. Do you plan to make your userpage match them? BBG 23:10, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Those have been taken care of. MHarrington 23:33, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Sorry if this is getting annoying, but the picture for 8-Bit is Enough Responses (The Field) is completely different than the one in your gallery now. BBG 23:43, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Looks like Strong Bad ended up playing Punch-Out!! instead of TROGDOR!.
I'll take care of that later. MHarrington 01:00, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] The Semi-Retirement of Strong Bad Smiling

I've noticed that even though you appear to be one of the more frequent up-daters (though probably not the most frequent) of Strong Bad Smiling, you don't seem to contribute to discussions about the action's notability. This edit suggests you weren't even aware of the state of semi-retirement the page entered during Talk:Strong Bad Smiling#Where U Goin' 2?. Do you oppose the page entering this state? Can you update the statistics table? Remove the cleanup template if you can answer "yes" to the second question. BBG 12:53, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Well, where is the statistics table? MHarrington 14:47, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
Strong Bad Smiling#Statistics of Strong Bad Smiling. BBG 19:15, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
Okay, well, I'll see what I can do. But I can't make promises right now, because I have no idea which parts of the statistics need updating. I've kinda lost track of the number of times he has smiled long ago. MHarrington 19:41, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Ween 2009 Toon Teaser

Hey MHarrington,

I just wanted to let you know that there was already an article on the toon, you may want to merge whatever extra information is in your article to the already existing one and merge. --Stux 15:21, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Okay. I didn't know it was made already. MHarrington 15:21, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
