Advise for a new wiki!

Hey there! Me and a couple of my friends started a wiki for our club. I'm the new admin there and would like to ask you if you have any advise to give about starting to make a wiki. What to post on the main page, who should I appoint to dmin with me? Are there any "insiders tips" for running a wiki more smothly? (i.e.: reducing file size ect.) We run on MediaWiki, on Hebrew language, but all the coding is the same. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 09:21, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)

E.L., sure, I'd love to help you with a new wiki. Can you contact me over instant messenger sometime? My contact information is available from my forum profile. Thanks. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:53, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)

GrapeNuts project

I have a new GrapeNuts project. The punctuation should be bold in the following text:

'''Debut''': → '''Debut:'''

Another question: Should we post new projects here, or on User_talk:GrapeNuts, or where? — It's dot com 22:50, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Actually, I can't think of any context in which the colon should be outside the triple single quotes (or are you just picking an example?) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 23:03, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)
There was a gnome who came through and replaced "whatever toon (debut)" with "Debut: whatever toon". Unfortunately, as shown there, he put the colon outside the bold. I fixed the first one I saw, but then I found another... and another. I did a search, and realized that there are a whole bunch. As for whether we should never have the colon unbolded, I think it looks okay on Glossary, especially because some of the entries have punctuation as part of the word (see FLOOR TOMMED!), but in general you're right; they should be bold. — It's dot com 00:03, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Sorry this has taken me so long to respond to. I'm usually not online much during the weekend. I'll sic GrapeNuts on this right away. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:53, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Hm, GrapeNuts seems unable to process that request. The problem is I have no good way of telling him the subset of pages he should work on. If I try to tell him to work on the whole wiki he gives me the following error: "AttributeError: MediaWikiXmlHandler instance has no attribute 'id'." Whatever that means. Apparently in version 1.5 I'll be able to pull an XML file of the database that should improve GrapeNuts' ability to handle tasks like this, but for now we may have to do this by hand. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 19:05, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)

When GrapeNuts is up and running again, so to speak, could you have it fix my sig? — User:ACupOfCoffee@

Signature

Hi JoeyDay. Is it alright if I could put your signature on my userpage to link to yours? Homestramy20|Talk 23:58, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, that's fine with me, Homestramy20, but could you remove the part about me being God? I feel the same way about you calling me "God" as you do about Bobo the King using the "D" word. Thanks. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:53, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Okay, complete apology. I didn't know you felt that way. Anyways, thanks. Homestramy20|Talk 22:04, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Shipping Time

Hey, Joey. I just ordered some stuff from the Homestar site. I just wanted to know how fast your stuff took to come. I am very exited about getting Strongbad_email.exe, but I don't want it to take 6-8 weeks. I mean, is Canada really that far away? But i'm rambling. Thanks, TotalSpaceshipGirl3

I don't remember, but I know it wasn't 6–8 weeks. I'd guess about a week. Congratulations on your purchase. I've been drooling over the DVDs for a while now. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 15:53, 30 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Alright, thanks. Are you from Canada? TotalSpaceshipGirl3
Nope, I'm from Salt Lake City, Utah. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 17:53, 30 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Oh, I am from Canada. So I guess it'll take longer than yours did. Oh well. TotalSpaceshipGirl3
I'm from Canada, (lower west coast to be exact), and I remember my purchase coming within one week. They were really quite speedy. Thunderbird 08:35, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

GrapeNuts source code

Hi Joey, would you be interested in releasing the GrapeNuts source code? I've been coding in Java far too much lately, I might be interested in a Python-type-diversion. :) Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 19:20, 5 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Homestar Coder: As is already noted on GrapeNuts' user page, GrapeNuts is an instance of the Python Wikipediabot Framework. I haven't made any modifications, and there are instructions on that page for downloading and using your own instance of the framework. Have fun! — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 19:23, 5 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Okay, I thought maybe you had attempted modifications. It sounds like the code itself might need some tweaking to work on HRWiki, so I could look into it... Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 20:29, 5 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Me too! --Stux 19:14, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC) (I have an instance of HRWiki running in my computer, and I am interested in it. If I can help solve the problems you guys are encountering, that would be awesome! Is there a page that specifically delineates the problems you are having?)
The biggest problem we're having is the Pywikipedia bot can't read any of our pages that start with lower case letters. We're kindof a special wiki in that we have the $wgCapitalLinks variable set to 'false' in our LocalSettings.php file. Other than that, it also seems to be having trouble getting lists of pages by category or by namespace. MediaWiki 1.5 has xml dumps, which should give Pywikipediabot much more useful information about our wiki and help it find pages better. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 22:29, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Unbanned please

Can I please be unbanned from the Chat Channle? H * R 7 0 0

What's your IRC username, please? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 22:25, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)

H. H * R 7 0 0

Just the letter "H"? What did you do to get banned from the channel? Are you sure you're banned, or are you just getting errors when you try to connect? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 23:08, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)

It says "Blocked by Zone Labs Security". I don't know what I did. I just left, and I was blocked! H * R 7 0 0

We didn't block you; Zone Labs is simply your firewall, my friend. You should be able to find a little Z down in the bottom right corner of your screen, right-click it, and choose "Disable". You probably shouldn't leave it disabled all the time. Maybe there's a setting in there where you can add us to some kind of allow list. Have your mom or dad look at it for you; they might be able to figure it out. Or contact me over instant messenger (my contact info is on my forum profile). I work in tech support and might be able to help you fix it. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 23:18, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Aw, man. I didn't realize my fire wall was ZL. I see it. Thank, for the info. H * R 7 0 0

No problem. Let me know if you still can't get in after disabling Zone Alarm. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 00:01, 8 Oct 2005 (UTC)

IRC Topic

Joey, how do you make ChanServ change the topic of a chat without having to OP to do it? — Lapper (talk) 20:27, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

You'd want to use the /msg ChanServ SET <channel> TOPICLOCK OFF command, which would then allow non-ops to change to topic. For more help with ChanServ, try /msg ChanServ HELP. -- Tom 20:53, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
Actually, I talked with Lapper in the chat room today. His problem had more to do with his channel being +t. He wanted to keep TOPICLOCK on, but didn't want to op himself every time he needed to change the topic. +t keeps non-ops from changing the topic, TOPICLOCK keeps those without a certain access level from changing the topic, regardless of whether they are opped or not. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 22:07, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia article about HRWiki

Me and a few other users are setting up a Wikipedia article about the HRWiki. (Here's the talk page for it.) Just thought I'd let you know. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

Uploading unlocking

Okay Joey,(I asked Tom too) here's my problem. I am a bureaucrat at the Eskimo Bob Wiki and we just moved to new software. The uploading is locked. How do I unlock it?--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 12:50, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

WikiTikiTavi

I noticed a spammer that I've seen on other Wikis. Dynamic IP, uses user names, always spams in exactly the same method. Could GrapeNuts be used to remove the spam, since it's always identical? Wouldn't get around good old fashioned blocking, but it'd reduce the damage. Just a thought, anyway. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 09:52, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I don't think GrapeNuts could handle this task faster than humans. First, GrapeNuts isn't running all the time constantly searching the Wiki for out of place stuff. When I want GrapeNuts to do a find and replace, I call him up in a command window and give him a command. When he's done with the command, he goes back to sleep. There's no way to set him up so he constantly patrols the Wiki. Now, I could create a task for him that I simply run once a day, but here's the catch: to find tihs kind of spam, he'd have to run a search of the entire Wiki, something he's very slow at doing. By the time GrapeNuts comes around to the page the spam was on, a much smarter human being will have already found it via recent changes and reverted it. It would be smarter if there were a way to have GrapeNuts look back through the last hundred edits and find the spam that way, but again that's something I would have to run myself, and it's faster for me to just look at recent changes with my own eyeballs. :) It was a good idea, but I just don't see it being feasible. Sorry, Jay. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 17:55, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
Okay, I didn't knw the specifics on GrapeNuts. I guess I assumed some things that weren't true of it. Oh, well. It was worth a shot. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 20:58, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

NGS Troll

Hi Joey. I wanted to let you know that the NGS troll actually went through and modified pages two, three sometimes four times. So reverts might have to be done several levels deep! Just wanted to let you know. BTW it goes without saying you guys are doing a great job in thwarting this nuisance! I will try to do what I can from here. --Stux 23:37, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

Tick and done

We have two templates that are exactly the same. One is used by some users, the other was used only by GrapeNuts until I switched it. I ask you this because you created done and you should know about the situation. So what do you say? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:26, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

I knew about the situation back when I created done. I knew there was already a tick template and I deliberately chose not to use it. I've said more on Template talk:done. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 20:15, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Homsar999 says he was blocked...

...from the IRC for "impersonating a copyrighted character". He says that he was never pretending to be Homsar or The Brothers Chaps. Why was he blocked? Here's a transcript of some things I asked him relating to this:

<Homsar> talking what up?
<Homsar> my UNBANNING?
<Kookykman> Yes.
<Homsar> Come to #fanstuff
<Kookykman> Sorry, I can't.
<Homsar> did you check out the Wiki User Wiki?
<Kookykman> I'm trying to get some info out of an admin why you were banned.
<Kookykman> And no.
<Homsar> Hello?
<Kookykman> I;m here.
<Kookykman> I'm going to ask JoeyDay.
<Kookykman> Hang on...
<Kookykman> Did JoeyDay really say you were blocked for impersonation?
<Kookykman> You there?
<Kookykman> Homsar?

He then didn't say anything the rest of the conversation. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

We've gone back and forth with this guy a lot. He's been banned for very good reasons. To my knowledge he never impersonated TBC, though Tom may know more about that. The real reason he's banned is for impersonating me and Tom and other admins and for registering other users' nicks with NickServ. He had numerous warnings before being banned and has even been unbanned once, but he went right back to the same old behavior and was blocked again. Kookykman, thanks for trying to help out. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 00:31, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, he obviously wasn't being truthful with me. Thanks for clearing it up. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
That's odd, because he's a very respectable user at the Fanstuff Wiki... - Joshua 00:22, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
If Homsar999 is such a respectable Fanstuff Wiki member, why would he ban me (the proprietor of said Fanstuff Wiki) from the (unofficial) #fanstuff IRC channel? I've done nothing to deserve being banned. In fact, I'm not even sure I've ever set foot in that channel. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 04:28, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, he was a respectable user, but ever since he got the Wiki User Wiki set up, I think he's let it all go to his head. He's getting on my nerves, and I think we may have to sever ties from the WUW and HRFWiki if he doesn't change. - Joshua 15:29, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
I made some rather unkind remarks about Homsar999 above that I would like to formally retract. I've edited one of my posts (and re-threaded a related comment) accordingly. Homsar999, you're still banned from a few places and I stick by the decisions that have been made regarding your access to various things, but I shouldn't have made insulting personal remarks like that. I'm sorry, and I hope you'll accept my apology. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 00:31, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

Side question

Just as a side question, is the "dog to vomit" comment a biblical quote? Could just be a conincidence, or used as a general saying around Salt Lake, but I've only ever heard that saying in the bible.  ;) Thunderbird 00:59, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

Yep, Proverbs 26:11. I was wondering if anyone would get that. :) — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 03:39, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
Oh I couldn't miss it. Glad to see there's another bible buff floating around the Wiki  :) Thunderbird 06:23, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, that's cool, because I, too, am a Bible buff. Grace and peace be with ye. Heimstern Läufer 06:28, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

Hey there Joeyday

Hey there Joeyday have you been. Let me ask you something, what happens if Homestar runner wiki doesn;t get the 2005 Fall Pledge Drive money? Nikolce Kocovski 05:24, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

I've commented a bit regarding our situation on the pledge drive talk page. I think we'll be okay for right now. If at some point in the future we can't raise all the money we need, we would probably turn to someone like Wikia for help. I don't think we'll need to do that anytime soon, though. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 23:07, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
what is a "wikia"? Nikolce Kocovski 09:47, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

Possible Server Problems?

Why has the wiki been so slow the last few days? Has it been the NSMC trolls doing? Or has it been some type of server problem? H * R 7 0 0 13:36, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

We've been able to block the NSMC troll from actually making edits, but we suspect his vandal scripts are still hitting the wiki pretty hard with traffic. Keep your pants on. We're working on a solution. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 15:59, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
Pants?.....hmmmm. I R F 16:34, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
How do you stop someone from doing something like that? - Joshua 16:40, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
Yeah. Seriously. Eh, at least it's working better now. H * R 7 0 0
I like, don't think you can stop a troll like this. Of course, JoeyDay is the expert. — talk Bubsty edits 23:38, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

Congrats

Congratulations on that check and letter fom Matt Chapman. Just one question; how much money did they donate again? They are awful generous :) Homestramy20|Talk 18:03, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

The check said $250, I think. Congrats, Joey. - Joshua 18:08, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
I can't take the credit for this. The honor goes to all of you who have made the Wiki what it is. The worst part about all this is I can't share this with any of you guys. I wish you could all hold this letter in your hands and feel how nervous and shaky I felt when I opened it. Our community deserves this collectively more than I do individually. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:35, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
Joey, I must say this: any group or organization is generally a reflection of its leadership. If our people know how to operate this wiki smoothly and do so professionally, it is because they have had a fine example to follow. Just a thought. --Stux 18:52, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
Hey, can you post all the sketches he sent you? I'm eager to see them... - Joshua 22:02, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
He sent sketches? Awesome. That should be a great sight. H * R 7 0 0
The sketches will all be posted this evening, as soon as I can get them scanned in using my parents' color flatbed scanner. Patience. :) — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 23:22, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
Okay. I'm waiting. So, your pretty lucky your actually getting involved with TBC. I mean, think about it if TBC never knew about this Wiki. It would make it alot less official. H * R 7 0 0 23:26, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
In the meantime, you can feel free to indulge in this one that Joey posted. [1]Lapper (talk) 23:45, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
I feel this could use all use a Wiki page somewhere. The letter being the focus, along with meantioning the compound eyes thing, and I think there's another instance on the new DVD or something. In any case, it does include 5 never before or anywhere else seen sketch pages, which deserves Wikifying in itself. (Just out of curiosity, are you planning to frame the sketches all nice and happy like? I sure would) Thunderbird 08:42, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, I tried adding the letter to Matt Chapman's page, but it got reverted because JoeyDay might not want to make a big deal out of it. I would definitely like a page of times the HRWiki was referenced by TBC and their friends, and this letter deserves to be on a page. - Joshua 12:30, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
A page just for the wiki would be selfish. How about a page referencing all fan acknowledgements from TBC? BHZ, signing on a fan forum... All the stuff. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 14:57, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, that sounds good. And I don't know what I would do if I got a letter from either of the Chapos. But yes, E.L's got it right. All fan acknowledgements, not just the HRWiki.--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 15:07, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
Did TBC ever really reference other fansites besides this one? And by fansites, I mean actual H*R fansites, not stuff like Tacoman. But whatever. Either page works for me. - Joshua 16:46, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
Uh, would it be a good thing if they did? Wait, did they say anything about the HRFWiki? H * R 7 0 0 17:43, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

Fanstuff Wiki IRC Channel

Hi, Joey. I'd like you to know that you're not banned from my #fanstuff channel, and in fact you have level 20 access, which you have had for a while (did you know that?)

Anyway, I'd like you to reconsider #hrwiki-fanstuff or work something out with me. PM me on the forums. --Homsar999

Yes, I'm aware that you've unbanned me and given me level 20 access in #fanstuff. I appreciate that, but it doesn't change things.
Freenode describes in it's official policy how projects should name their channels. They specifically outline that once we've registered a name, we have control over any channel that starts with that name and a hyphen, as I've done in the case of #hrwiki-fanstuff. This is the recommended way of doing things, and you see it over and over again on Freenode in places like #drupal and #drupal-support or #wordpress, #wordpress-docs, #wordpress-bugs and #wordpress-meetup or #wikipedia and #wikipedia-tech. I'm confident that the way I've named the official fanstuff channel is the most appropriate way to do things.
Here's the bottom line: I don't have anything against your fanstuff channel, but the only way I would ever consider attaching it officially to the Wiki is if I and the other admins had full control over it. In other words, you would need to give up control over the channel entirely. I don't have anything against you personally, Homsar999; please understand that clearly. I just want to make sure we have full control over anything we deem to be official. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 22:42, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
