Mean to young people?

You're my least favorite admin ever.

Well, Bubsty (I was close. See below), one of the things you learn as an admin is that you can't please everybody all the time. I am, however, open to constructive criticism, so I'm a little disappointed that you didn't give me any more to go on than that one line. Or that you didn't at least sign your name. — It's dot com 20:23, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
What? Did Bubsty write that? Has Matt? (talk) 20:37, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Indeed. EDIT: Actually, his sister said that it was she who wrote the comment. It's dot com
Or perhaps somebody from his computer or something. He did refer to Bubsty in the third person... Thunderbird 00:33, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
How did this person edit da Basement? Didn't you block him for 3 days, TBird? Heimstern Läufer 00:35, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
Yes, he did, but I unblocked the IP, since the edit wasn't trolling or vandalism. — It's dot com 00:38, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
I see. And in response to Thunderbird's comment: I don't know that third person is really evidence it wasn't he; he could have been covering his tracks. What does baffle me, however, is that that IP wrote false information about Bubsty's guestbook being gone, when in fact Bubsty himself removed the deletion tag from his guestbook, something one would think Bubsty would know. Heimstern Läufer 01:14, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
Haha, I just mentioned that point a minute ago. But on IRC- I didn't bother updating my theory here. Thanks for pointing that out. Thunderbird 01:18, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
That was me! Not Erik! And he told me he left the wiki, so I thought he had deleted his guestbook too. Thekillerdynamo 04:03, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
*Sigh*. So much for me leaving. Seems I have some explaining to do. Some things to clear this whole thing up:
First off, I DID NOT write that comment above. I recently showed Sarah the comment you left on my user talk page a while ago telling me to stop using the list of users list to welcome people. Although I really didn't care that much about what you had written, she seemed to think of it as rude and insulting. I assume that comment was her "blowing off steam".
It seems Dot Com thinks Thekillerdynamo is me. If you still have any questions about this whole thing, please tell me. I'll try to explain it.
Finally, I'm really sorry (not to mentioned embarrased), that this whole thing happened. I'll try to have something like this never happen again. (Depends if a certain family member agrees).
Sincerely,
talk Bubsty edits 04:22, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Well, as you can see below, all I knew for sure was that the edits were coming from your house. — It's dot com 05:21, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

You do a lot on this wiki, but you're mean to the young people here. 10, 11, 12, and 13 year olds shouldn't have to act like a 28-year-old! Can't you just be a bit nicer? I think more people would like you then. Please; I'm not trolling - although I did blank your talk page. But that was so you would see this easier. If you revert it (which I'm sure you will) can you at least think about being nicer? Once again, sorry for messing up your talk page. Just please read. Thanks! 24.18.208.18 04:58, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

PS: I think you're still a good admin. Just show some commen sense. (Of course, I should talk; Look who's about to get themselves blocked!)
PPS: Oh, and about my first edit on this page; I admit that was me. But that was back when I didn't know what a wiki was and didn't know who you were. You aren't my least favorite admin ever. In fact, you're one of my favs! If you want to block me for that, go ahead; I deserve it.
Why don't you log in so we can discuss this. Talking through an IP address isn't the kind of conversation we should be having. I'm not going to block you. If I wanted to block you, I would have blocked your IP a long time ago. — It's dot com 05:18, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I made a user. That One User 06:29, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
I don't mean make a sockpuppet, I mean log in as yourself. You have obviously been around for a bit for you to hold the opinion you do, and, looking closely, you are either Bubsty or, at the very least, someone inside his house. So, c'mon now, Erik, Sarah, whoever... log in for real if you actually want to talk. — It's dot com 14:05, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
How did you know? Thekillerdynamo 00:49, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Hang on now, let me make sure I have this right... You're telling me that someone who has 18 total contributions (as of this writing, none of which are in the article namespace) and to whom the only thing I've ever said is "Welcome to the wiki, Sarah! Ask your brother to show you how to sign your name," would suddenly and for no apparent reason get so annoyed with me as to put this on my page? I'm sorry, but that just doesn't add up. Perhaps you could explain yourself a little... or come clean. ;) — It's dot com 03:37, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Seems odd right? Actully, I've just seen what you've said to other people (like the thing) and what you said to Bubsty that one time. That was why I said "you're my least favorite admin ever". When you said that thing about user welcoming... something like that. But I'm not mad anymore. Thekillerdynamo 04:01, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Oh, okay then. Please allow me to speak to your points: Occasionally messages must be posted that are stern because it's urgent that the message be understood. (In the case of the message I sent your brother, it was because of the fact that edit summaries can't be changed, and so we have to be careful what we put in them.) I do try, however, never to be insulting, and as I said way back when, I do apologize if he took it that way. Also, I have nothing against young users, and I will happily give assistance to anyone who needs it (just have a look around this talk page). It should be noted that several of our exceptional users, including a sysop, are quite young, relatively speaking. Even though actual age doesn't matter, I don't see anything wrong with expecting a certain level of maturity from our users, once they've had a chance to get the hang of things. The wiki, after all, is not a toy. I think BazookaJoe put it quite well in his message to The thing when he talked about what the purpose of this wiki is. All of this can only bring us to one conclusion: ...Strong Sad's adopted. — It's dot com 05:21, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Well this is (not) nice...

I'd just like to bring this to your attention: [1]. --Stux 03:54, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I noticed that. I don't know what that guy's deal is. He is addressing Coder, so I'd prefer she be the one to respond to him. That edit could be called trolling (in the true sense of the word), but it's not vandalism. Until and unless he causes more, bigger trouble, I'ma stay out of it. — It's dot com 04:12, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
I was thinking it was more along the lines of harassment. --Stux 04:43, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Still, if she wants to block him, she has the power. — It's dot com 04:45, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Yeah. Very well I just thought I'd bring that up. Have a good night. --Stux 04:55, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for bringing it up. I'll be keeping an eye on that guy for sure. ;) — It's dot com 05:09, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
This guy has some kind of anger management problem, and I think not responding to him is the best course of action. I don't even know where he gets this stuff; I've never blocked him (although I did warn him that he might be blocked for mucking up the Sandbox), called him any names (especially not "incredibly gay" - all the people I've known who are actually incredibly gay are far more mature than that guy ;) ), or confused him with Willy on Wheels. If he wants to periodically upchuck on my talk page, whatever. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 20:14, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Apparantly this is all because of this revert. I'm really confused as to how posting a few images constitutes two to three hours work as well as hating Homestar Coder for reverting it. Additionally, it didn't really fit; those images were all over the place. — Lapper (talk) 01:34, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I thought I explained reasonably that the pictures made the page cluttery; at the time, I was also trying to get that page deleted as I considered it redundant with Category:Character Evolution. *shrug* Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 01:40, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

well, he archived it. this means that at the top, you can just go to the links and they will lead you to the headlines. pretty cool, huh?
Yeah, I just couldn't take all the whining from all you guys anymore. ;) But I figured out a compromise between keeping all the talk on this page and moving it all to an archive, so I went with it. — It's dot com 21:07, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Right. You just said that. I'm asking why you want to be a sysop. — It's dot com 16:33, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Because I want to be able to: Block, Delete, Edit special pages... all the stuff sysops can do. --TheThin 16:48, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Why do you want to be able to do all those things? — It's dot com 16:53, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, try to explain. — It's dot com 16:59, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

What's gone? The people, or the pages? — It's dot com 17:17, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
If there is a person abusing the Wiki, or a page that doesn't have any need, there are ways of alerting sysops even if you're not one (add abusers to HRWiki:WikiTroll and add the "tobedeleted" template to bad pages.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 17:19, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Both are gone but the main reason I want to be a sysop is so I can help the wiki as much a possible. --TheThin 17:21, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
It's admirable to want to help the wiki. We need as many people—sysops and users alike—who will do that.
Around here, we consider several factors when choosing whom to make sysops, and the most important consideration is trustworthiness. A close second is participation in the project. Rounding out the top six are the ability to deal with other users (especially in mediating disputes or deciding when to step in), technical know-how, the necessity for another position (that is, whether or not the wiki needs more sysops at any given time), and finally seniority. (Number seven on the top-six list is senority, which is the ability to make bad H*R-related jokes.)
With those things in mind, at this time I would not be comfortable with making you a sysop. Not long ago, you vandalized this wiki and less than a day ago you were blocked from the fanstuff wiki for persistent trolling. I think it will take a while for people to trust you again after that. Additionally, you currently don't meet the participation requirements. That is, you really don't have that many edits in the main or talk namespace nor have you done a big project. I haven't seen how you handle stress or abuse from problematic users and I don't know the status of your technical know-how (again, because I don't have a large sample of edits from which to judge). Last (and this one matters the least to me but is nevertheless important) there's the question of seniority: In other words, even if all else were equal, quite a few deserving people have been here a lot longer than you, and would thus be ahead of you in line whenever we promote the next user(s).
Please don't think I'm trying to be overly discouraging, but your persistence in asking has made me want to be as unambiguous as possible. (By the way, asking for a position of power—no matter where you are (except maybe Wikipedia)—is a sure way to guarantee that the position will not be handed to you. Just so you know.) I encourage you to read the link above about the requirements and follow its advice. Over time, perhaps a long time, if you make good contributions and keep your nose clean, then you might be more seriously considered. Until then, keep on tranglin'. — It's dot com 18:45, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Darn --TheThin 19:15, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

To The Thing: Personally, I'd love to be able to do all those things as well, but being given a position of power doesn't come free - You just gotta earn it! And to It's dot com: I found this whole conversation quite amusing. :) — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 01:51, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

The thing: Darn

Has Matt? (talk) 01:59, 24 January 2006 (UTC) P.S. No offense to either of you. I just found that funny.

One other thing, Thing: as I'm sure any of the sysops can tell you, it might not be as fun as it looks from the other side of the fence. It means a butteload of work, and a commitment to a certain amount of involvement and responsibilities. It's like the Spiderman thing (you know, "With great power...). (Except it doesn't come with the ability to swing through Manhattan streets in spandex.) Also, about helping the wiki: yeah, deleting pages and blocking folks help, but it's really only a small percentage of the work that improves the wiki: the bulk of it is regular users editting and reviewing each other's edits. In other words, you already have the power for the single biggest part of wiki-helping that goes on. —AbdiViklas 04:02, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
Nevermind I'm a sysop on My own wiki now. But it would still be cool to be one. TheThin 21:59, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

If I may throw in my own perspective on this, "with great power comes great responsibility." From what I've observed, being a sysop means making a lot of tough judgement calls, speaking nicely to people when you'd rather not, getting blamed for just about anything that goes wrong (real or perceived) and a lot of really hard work. Given all that, I'm not really clear on why someone would want that job so much, but I have nothing but admiration for the people who do it. Point7Q 01:37, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Just so you know, the reason I restored that image for "It's like it was meant to be" is just because Homestar Coder and Abdi both expressed their support for it and I felt that the person who removed it was acting rather unilaterally. I don't mind its removal as much if there's actually someone else who agrees about removing it, though. Anyway, keep on tranglin'. Heimstern Läufer 06:17, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I'd say the same about not having a super-strong opinion; I just wanted to see things done fairly. (I try not to be too committed to my own ideas around the wiki. I find it only leads to disappointment when your edit gets reverted or your Fun Fact gets crushingly declined in STUFF. Not to mention you get along in the community better if you just go with the flow and be ready to get REVERT'd a few times, eh?) And yeah, I saw your new idea, and I think it's hilarious. dot, I think I am going to take a break from the wiki. I just wanted you to answer a question of mine: do you ever feel like the wiki ends up affecting more than just the wiki aspect of your life? I mean, Ciberdude's got my IM screenname and my email address, and he won't stop from either. I know you can't help me with this, but I think I have to make myself a little more discreet the next time I come on here. That's why I'm taking a break. Just act like I'm gone for good, okay? What did you do

I would just like to make a counterpoint to hating guestbooks, even though the discussion is over. Have you ever thoguht how much sigs should be deleted? You must have, because if you are going to delete guestbooks like you did, the exact same reasons apply to sigs. People working on their sigs clutters up the recent changes, I know because I do it all the time. Sigs are not contributing to the wiki, just like you insist guestbooks don't. And finally, They give no proof that someone ever read your userpage, something that by the way is something that people either do or don't but that shouldn't matter to anyone else. I just think that What you and the admins did was entirely opinionated. Seriously (Talk) 22:45, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

No proof, eh? Well, I guess that someone could read a user page in a matter of seconds and then promptly sign a guestbook. Not all sigs clog recent changes, just yours. Sigs are a means of identifying a user, and thus serve a purpose. I am not meaning to reply for It's dot com, but I just wanted to say this. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 22:58, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
Also, I bet a lot of sig flooding could be stopped if people just used "Show Preview". --DorianGray
Sigs exist anyway; you edit them in your user preferences (which does not show up on Recentchanges). The custom, however, is to create a User/sig template and use that as your sig. The User/sig versions are used because:
  1. They're easier to edit.
  2. If you edit one, all of your signatures change. If you edit the sig in your preferences, only future signatures change.
What's more, custom sigs of any sort allow links to your Talk or Contributions page, and make it easier to tell who's who (if you see a light blue sig with a green "Talk" area, it's probably me. If you see a gold-colored sig with symbols on both sides, it's likely Thunderbird. etc.) I'd take that over not being able to tell if I've previously read a user page. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 23:29, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
And, by the way, it was not the admins' decision to remove them; they may have started the voting, but everyone with a user name could vote. I abstained voting entirely because I don't really care. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 23:32, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
Got it. Reluctantly. Seriously (Talk) 00:16, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Two Questions

Hey Dot com, what's up? I have two questions. First, where did you post that discussion where someone was asking how to do links that were not underlined and you tried an example which didn't quite work correctly? (This is indirectly related:) I was wondering if you could take a look at this issue. Thanks! --Stux 21:34, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

See #Super-plain_link. Note: old how-to questions from my talk page are filed under The System Is Down → Technical help. On your second question, I'm not sure what you're asking. — It's dot com 22:16, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
For the first question, I looked briefly and couldn't find it (actually i scanned the page twice) but couldn't find it. I was scanning too quickly. As for the second issue, it turns out to be a firefox issue :(. Nerd42's sig goes beyond the table borders for some reason. I looked at the sig code and all the tags were closed off. I hope you have a copy of firefox to look at this cuz i'm not gonna provide a screenshot of it right away! ;) I gotta eat! --Stux 00:23, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
I'd post it in a more central place, like the FAQ talk. — It's dot com 00:31, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
Good idea! Just so you know, I found out another reason why you wouldn't be able to see it: resolution. The problem only happens when you wrap text a certain way. I agree with The thing on this one. Even though he might look like NSMC at first glance, take a look at the article on Uncyclopedia about our wiki. At the near bottom, it says "If you happen to be new, register with the username: 18593095NSMC90531234 - Trust me, it'll be fun." This is the exact same username. It seems to me that this guy just didn't know anything about NSMC or this wiki and got Punk'd. He wasn't doing anything bad (yet), so why block him because of "trolling"? Although I would suggest that he get a better username. Has Matt? (talk) 22:11, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

I know exactly where he got the username, and it's the reason I knew what his intentions were. Babel

I understand why you think that the Babel towers will be better with the source code rather than the templates, but I really think that templates will make it a lot easier to use and more user friendly. I understand that there would be a lot, but noinclude tags could be used to keep track of them. Source code is fine, but do you think that I could at least try with Templates, and if it gets too confusing switch back to source code? -AtionSong 00:23, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

I think we should try with the source code first. It's not too hard to get the hang of. (Besides, it's just copy and paste for most people. ;) ) I don't have a problem with a generic template, but we don't need to create a whole slew of them for a non-mainspace thing such as this. Plus, this way, people won't be limited by just the ones in the templates (although we do ask that they be Homestar Runner (or wiki) related). — It's dot com 00:31, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Recent block

Umm... are you sure that IP you blocked recently is the right guy? Because I checked his contribs and he hasn't done anything vaguely trollish. Except, maybe for editing Tampo's sig and page, but Tampo din't seem to mind, which leads me to believe he is Tampo. If he's not, he still seems like a fine user. Any reason why you blocked him? Yea! --TheThin 20:10, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
The IP in question was not blocked for no reason. It was being used (as you can see above) to create multiple accounts in a short amount of time, which were then being used for vandalism. I will unblock the IP for now, but I'll be keeping an eye on it. P.S. The thing: Exactly what was the point of your post? — It's dot com 20:29, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Admin sigs

Why do none of the admins excepy JoeyDay have customized their sigs? I'm thinking maybe you guys are too busy to do that stuff. Just wondering if you knew. Seriously (Talk) 22:47, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, that's not quite true, unless you have a very narrow definition of admin. If by admin you mean someone on the Admin Team, then Stu definitely has a signature. If you mean people who are on the Admin Team and are currently active in the day-to-day maintenance of the site, then you're right, only Joey has really customized his signature. Of the six of us, however, only AgentSeethroo has no customization to speak of. Tom, InterruptorJones, and I all have subtle modifications from the standard. If, on the other hand, when you say admins you mean sysops, then there is quite a bit of customization. Thunderbird and FireBird have had special sigs for as long as I can remember, as have Jay, Homestar Coder, Kilroy, and The Paper. Dr Haggis's modification is a slight tweak, and FortyTwo and Furrykef haven't been here in a while. Even GrapeNuts (a bot) has a sig. As for the heart of your question: Why do Tom, BazookaJoe, and I have more or less "plain" signatures? Well, Tom's is like that because he's ornery about such things. BazookaJoe's and mine are like that because it just looks right. Since everyone else goes to such great lengths to customize their signatures, not doing so becomes a customization in itself. — It's dot com 23:30, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Cool font. I meant the admin team, without the sysops, By the way. Stu, well I've never actually seen him make an edit. Although I did hear that he was joey's friend. I just think that if you have a sig, you should make it have more convenience, like having a link to your talk page. Thnaks for the answer. Seriously (Talk) 23:35, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

And Dot com has toyed with his signature in the past once or twice, a long while back. That special sig you just made looks pretty cool, if you ever did decide to change it for good. ;) Thunderbird 06:35, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
GrapeNuts has a sig? Dot com customizing his!? What is the world coming to!? This message is grapenuts.gif GrapeNuts (talk·edits·owner) approved (not really, I just wanted an excuse to use his sig :). --Stux 07:04, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
Weird. And you, thunderbird, had a blue sig. That scares me. Seriously (Talk) 05:10, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Um, I just wanted to know what subtle modifications you, Tom, and InterruptorJones have on your sig. Do you mean past versions? Also, what is DrHaggis's slight tweak? Seriously (Talk) 01:25, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
Tom has a nonbreaking space in front of his (and used to have an empty link). I have an em dash. Interruptor Jones has both of those and uses small tags. Dr Haggis's real username is Drhaggis. All of us put the modifications directly in the preferences box, instead of using a sig template. — It's dot com 01:59, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
So you don't have to put an em dash alll the time? That's really cool. I think Ill do that. Seriously (Talk) 03:00, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Fanstuff on the knowledge base

By the way, you say I have to delete my caption contest, yet you don't seem to think about the amazing amount of people doing translations on their userpages. Also, you should think about Has Matt?'s page that includes homsar quotes that other people can edit. Seriously (Talk) 23:28, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

I can't realy think of many people who do translations. Even then, the translations themselves are direct quotes and the replies are occurring on the talk pages. The reason I had a problem with your activity is because not only were you inviting people to edit your user page, you were asking them to create new H*R-related content based on the toons, which is the very definition of fanstuff. — It's dot com 23:38, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Seriously (Talk) 23:47, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
One of the coolest things in this wiki is that everybody generally treats each other with respect and with maturity. Most of the people I know here do their job (be it editing pages, commenting on behavior, or taking action nobody wants to have to take but that needs to be taken) and then move on if need be, and so we try not to harbor little things that may be divisive or in the long run inconsequential. --Stux 00:04, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Oh. Well, for an explanation of the page, see the section in A History. I deleted the talk page because it was a user talk page, and therefore comments on it weren't addressed to me but to the vandal. — It's dot com 18:00, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure I trust those counters anyway... The one at the bottom of this talk page currently shows only about 800 views, but surely that can't be right. — It's dot com 17:44, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
I've been having a similar situation on my user page. For some extremely odd reason, it says I have 28,000 page views. Seriously, I'm not that popular. Has Matt? (talk) 19:09, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
You were talking to Dot com, not Seriously. With crap, Yeltensic (T C) 21:51, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, you see, "Seriously" can mean both your username or "in a serious manner". Has Matt? meant that in reality he is not as popular as 28,000 page views would seem to indicate, but Granola took it to mean that he was addressing you directly. Hilarity ensued. — It's dot com 22:16, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Or a total lack of hilarity, as it was a crappy joke. With crap, Yeltensic (T C) 22:38, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Oh good, I knew you weren't that popular :P Maybe with all the code fiddling you do, you somehow reversed the number of talk page views with the number of userpage views or something. I've gotta say this has shattered my confidence in those little counter things, before I would have trusted those things with my life. Thunderbird 06:24, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
And I jumped from 2500 to 6000 in less than 24 hours awhile ago. That can't be right, either. Heimstern Läufer 06:28, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
The number is so small because the counter was reset to zero when this page was moved back incorrectly from a vandal. It had to be deleted and recreated, and that's probably what caused the problem. And Heimstern, do you have your preferences set to hold page caches? If you do, that's probably what caused the view count to jump. small_logo.pngUsername-talk 06:30, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Aw, man! You're probably right, HSRusername. That really bums me out. I would reset my counter, except that I have no idea what to set it to. By the way, as far as I know, I've never messed with anything that would affect those numbers. Maybe they've gone up dramatically because an outside bot is gathering data or something (like for Google). — It's dot com 06:34, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
At the very least, as of 06:57, 7 December 2005 (UTC), you had over 6,000 talk page views, and just under 6,000 userpage views. I think it's safe to give yourself at least a 10,000 talk page view head start, as long as you give your userpage a 10,000 view handicap. That should get you somewhat back on track. ;) Thunderbird 06:38, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
Well, I found an archive just before all the hubbub that put the count at 10,071. I added that to the 958 currently showing to get 11,029, and used that figure to reset my counter. — It's dot com 06:55, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Autocolumn

Btw, I wanted to say excellent work on the autocolunm feature. I was looking at the Strong Bad Email tables yesterday, thinking an autocolumn thing would be a nice feature, and lo and behold not two hours later it had been converted. Nice work. (I suppose for colunms such as the ones on my userpage though, it doesn't have any useful application, correct?) Thunderbird 14:25, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

I tried to use it for the ones in my page, but it just screwed things up. Although I did put it on The Field and Strong Badia and Has Matt? used it on Homestar Talker. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 14:47, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

The Smoking Monkey's talk page

Why isn't what he did bad to you? Before you say no, let me explain. First of all, he embarassed me and The thing on his talk page on purpose, second of all, he said apology's to dot com, which means he knew this would have a certain outcome to certain people like me, you (which for some reason you find fine), and the thing. This is a perfect example of premeditated malice. And third of all, would you like it if someone made fun of you on their talk page for everyone to see? Seriously (Talk) 21:24, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

I have asked The Smoking Monkey to revert or remove the thread. If you find it insulting, then it is a personal attack, which we don't want. I assure you this was not The Smoking Monkey's intent, but that is beside the point. Let me take this opportunity, however, to suggest that learning to laugh at one's self is one of the most difficult yet rewarding things a person can do. In addition, I think you should stop apologizing and start adding more content to this site. Whenever I click on your contribs, I notice that over the last week your user talk contribs outnumber your main namespace contribs 7 to 1. — It's dot com 22:07, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

I wasn't party to this at all, so I don't really know what happened in this particular case. But I will say this: I said once before that I thought the ops here were being too lenient on The Thing, as he's had a history of vandalism and trolling in the past, and everyone seems to be very quick to defend him. (Lots of "I'm sorry's" and "I won't do it again!'s".) I don't deny he's also made good edits here, but I have not seen discipline executed equally to him as has been to others who've done similar things, or less. That's kinda frustrating to see. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 18:44, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

You all need to complain to your teachers for not teaching you how to read. While you're at it, Seriously and The thing, go ahead and post a mailing address where I can send a bill to your parents for babysitting you. On the main page talk, I said that anyone caught vandalizing in our name would be dealt with. I have neither the time nor the resources to try and police other wikis. The message regarding other wikis means that if you vandalize Uncyclopedia, for example, in retaliation for something that happens here, then at that point you are speaking for all of us here, and I care very much that you don't do that. But random vandalism doesn't concern me. To The thing: I can't believe that you think vandalism is funny, especially given that you're an administrator at a wiki. To Seriously: you need to learn what is and what isn't important, and stop being such a tattletale. And stop speaking for me. In one place you say "No matter what, you must get blocked." You have neither the authority nor the experience to be making claims like that. To KieferSkunk: The thing didn't actually do anything (in this case) to harm our wiki or its good name, and therefore there are no grounds for blocking him. (And he has been blocked recently by BazookaJoe for spamming.) To anyone who needs to hear this: Stop vandalizing. Stop behaving so immaturely (and don't blame your actions on your age; I know several young good contributors). Wiki usage is not a right; it's a privilege. And for goodness' sake, stop apologizing. You've said you're sorry so much that the words have no meaning. Let your future actions be your apology. That's all for now. — It's dot com 21:38, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

In reply to your comment to me: I understand, and I'm not asking for him to be blocked in this case. I was making a more general comment about The Thing's history, seeing as how I have witnessed vandalism from him in the past and saw people, even sysops, defending him and going way out of their way to reason with him, rather than treating him as a vandal. I didn't understand it at the time, and I still don't, so I left my comments on the matter at "I think you're being too lenient with him". This was mainly just a follow-up on that, more to mention that I'm not surprised another "incident" has come up than anything else. That's all. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 22:26, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Well, unless an account is being used for nothing but vandalism, then reasoning should always be exhausted before blocking is implemented. — It's dot com 22:53, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Just who do you think you are? Babysitting? Y'know, it's not like I've ever done anything mean to you. Yes, I spoke for you. Just trying to help and to see it in the eyes of an admin. Yes, I've answered your talk page questions for you with crappy answers. Again, jsut trying to help. These things don't mean you have to insult me like that. Y'know, I've really never done anything bad to you on purpose. I always had great respect for you, and I've never purposely insulted you like you just did. You need to learn how a simple misinterpretation of a comment on the main page talk should'nt be an excuse for acting like that. — Seriously (Talk) 23:09, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
When I vandalized I thought you were suppose to vandalize there. --TheThin 23:12, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
To Seriously: As one who has been an admin several times in other places, one thing I can say with certainty is that many admins feel very put off and are easily annoyed by non-admins (and especially relatively new people) trying to speak for them. Dictating policy to other users on behalf of the admins is usually a no-no unless you are an admin or are trusted by the admins to do so. (Obviously, I can't speak for It's dot com, but if I were in his place dealing with this crap, that's how I'd feel.) — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 23:17, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
And if you haven't figured it out by now who I am, Seriously, then you've got deeper problems than I can fix in one afternoon. To The thing: whatever, man. To KieferSkunk: Hear, hear. — It's dot com 23:23, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Okay. Here it goes, time for me to swallow my pride:

Look, Dot com, I just don't want to be treated like a baby. In my opinion, I think being a tattletale is the wrong was to think about it, I prefer "fighting trolls, and trying to help you with your rule". Yes, I was disrespectful to you. I just needed to prove my point and express my anger at you. Also, I know you are an admin. Maybe I was a bit overboard with you; that doesn't mean what I said was entirely wrong. I mean, I apologize, but it's not like I'll kiss your ring and beg for forgiveness. I've got to be a bit more defiant than that to ever prove my point. Just remember: I've always, always tried to help you, and I just found your comment a bit mean. Just forgive me, please, and let this whole thing disappear. Thanks a lot. — Seriously (Talk) 00:11, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Seriously, have you been reading this thread and understanding it? It's dot com has stated just 8 posts up: "And for goodness' sake, stop apologizing." You are still relatively new to this wiki, and your experience has been limited to editing User and User talk pages. You said yourself you give "crappy answers" to questions that don't concern you. When I first joined, I watched conversations like this unfold and saw how responsible admins reacted. I didn't try to solve everybody's problems; I knew I didn't have the knowledge. Just keep to yourself for a while and maybe see what it's like to make some main namespace contrubutions. (That is the idea of a wiki, you know.) small_logo.pngUsername-talk 00:30, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Dr. Who

HOW DOES HE KEEP COMING BACK! --TheThin 23:02, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Hey man, I want you to know that Dr. Who vandalized your talk page. Could you block his IP for me? --The 386 My talk 23:02, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
First of all, this is nothing to get excited about. He's a garden-variety vandal, nothing more, and he comes back because (a) he apparently doesn't have anything constructive to do and (b) he has access to a dynamic IP. Second, yes, I'm aware that he vandalized this page. Third, I already blocked him before you posted your message. Fourth, please list future vandals on HRWiki:WikiTroll, not this page. Thanks. — It's dot com 23:11, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Also, he never does much damage, besides vulgar content and stuff like that. What's weird, though, is how he always manages to come when there's no sysops around. — Seriously (Talk) 21:03, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
You know what I hate? When this guy writes vulgar edit summaries. For people who patrol recent changes, especially kids, we don't have to see that. Really. — Seriously (Talk) 23:11, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
Yea. I'm 10 he on my page said This user is fulla ****. --TheThin 23:13, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
Ugh. At least NSMC was was just racist. This guy swears like nobody's business. — Seriously (Talk) 23:15, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
He can go to jail for this. --TheThin 23:17, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
I doubt that severely... Though one can always wish... --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 23:21, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
To this point: would it be possible to introduce a language filter? The rare times a swear is needed (an interview transcript, for example) a sysop can override. ?? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 23:24, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
Probably impossible. That would interfere with this wiki, though, because the cartoon says crap all the time, among other things. — Seriously (Talk) 23:30, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
We could allow the program to accept crap. Still, there are a lot of other issues... Has Matt? (talk) 23:33, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
It's definitely possible, but currently it's not worth the effort it would take to install it. As for "crap", we just wouldn't put that word on the bad list. Finally, I would appreciate it if comments that aren't actually directed to me be posted in a more public place: Talk:Main Page, HRWiki talk:FAQ, or HRWiki:Da Basement, to name a few. — It's dot com 23:35, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
OK. Although I think that everyone comes to you because you are the central hub of the wiki, pretty much. Everyone comes to you in hardships, whcih if I were you, I would be honored with. — Seriously (Talk) 23:38, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
Oh, I know, and don't think I'm not honored, but I, like most people, don't like new-message false alarms, and would rather talk about projects I'm currently working on. Also, there are a lot of questions that anyone could more easily answer if they were just put in a more public place. — It's dot com 00:17, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Flashforward

I'm still at the conference, it was really great. IRC doesn't work on the terminals, but suffice it to say, I was here, got autographs, (not many questions) and it was really great. I'll try and get a writeup on Wednesday evening. --TBird

That was not Tbird. Look [here]. The editor's IP starts with a 6. Bluebry 01:43, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Thunderbird is not at home, so the IP address would be different. It could still be him, but I would like him to log in if possible. If he can't log in at the convention, he'll figure something out or log in when he gets home later tonight. — It's dot com 03:37, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Too late. His IP's been blocked. He'll log in when he needs to, but I have one question: If he was TBird, why did he sign TBird instead of his IP (accidentally typed ~~~~ without knowing he wasn't logged in) or with his sig (or siggie, I guess)? It doesn't seem right. I mean, if he can edit annonymously, he can edit logged on, and I think the first thing he'll ask if he can't log in is why he can't. Plus, he would know that an IP editing as a user would most likely be reverted. We could unblock the IP and see if TBird can log on now, I guess. Wouldn't hurt, but I still think it wasn't him. I dunno. Oh, also, if it was him, sorry, just don't want anybody impersonating you. Bluebry 03:50, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
We didn't block the IP. There are several reasons why he might not have been able to log in (if the computer he was using didn't accept cookies, for example). I think the edits by the IP match TBird's style, but I'm being cautious for now. I'm patient; if I have to I can wait for him to get home to confirm. — It's dot com 04:01, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Ye of little faith :-P You didn't recognize my unique writing style? I just didn't really feel like logging in for one or two edits. I probably should have, but meh. In any case, all I said was true, and more. I left a message on the IRC with Phlip, but it should still be there if you scroll up, to see a brief summary of the event. I'll get a writeup started tomorrow night. For now, I've gotta be up in five and a half hours for work, so I'm going to bed. EDIT: Oh, and one thing I forgot to mention on IRC. Let's just say I'll be kicking myself for months for not bringing my DS to Flashforward... Thunderbird 09:26, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
I thought it was you (see above where I say it sounds like your style), but the info was too good, so I thought it was best to wait for confirmation. I guess you'll log in from now on. :-P Actually, the only reason I had any question was because the IP you were using came up as being based in Chicago, which was pretty weird. I admit it would have been quite unlikely for someone to be imitating you, but we've been burned before. Anyways, great jaerb!!! Brilliant random Homsar quote thingy!

You're pretty good at this, obviously. Take a look at this discussion and my idea at the end - would this be something possible to improve usability? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 20:26, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

I guess you're gonna have to s-spell out what your idea is, because I'm not quite s-seeing it. S-sorry if that cancels out the s-smart. — It's dot com 20:31, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
The ogg files. They confuse people, many players in use don't use them right out of then box. But Wikipedia has an interesting solution which we might be able to emulate. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 20:33, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
I should have been more s-specific. What I meant was, when I went to the page about the s-symphony, I wasn't s-sure what their s-solution was. — It's dot com 20:35, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
In the 1st paragraph, there's the Listen link (after the musical example) - there's a (listen (help·info)) thingy. The "Help" goes to instructions on how to get your player to play oggs. I mean, I was stymied by them until I was researchiong (on that page, actually) and stumbled upon that.
Of course, I don't know enough about Wiki to know a) if this can be done on our system, 2) how to do it even if it can be done, and III) if this sort of a thing would require "discussion" "someplace". SO that's why I ask you, Mr. S-smart. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 20:42, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Just copy the source code of Wikipedia:Template:Audio to Template:Audio (or something like that), adjust the help link to the media help page on this Wiki, and it should work fine (apart from maybe the speaker icon). --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 20:46, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
It's that easy, eh? :\ Well, it'd take me a few days to figure all that out! (I spent a good part of today trying, haven't gotten far. Will keep trying.) But if someone who already has all that figured out wants to take up the cause, we could have better usability sooner. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 20:54, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Talk page rate

These days, I've been trying to make more main namespace contribs and less user talk page contribs. The question is, has my diet (sorta) done any good for me? Check my contribs. On a rate of 1 to 10, how much would you say I've improved? — Seriously (Talk) 04:40, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Er, maybe we should give it a little more time before making a 1 to 10 rating. I say that because in the last three days, you have made more user edits than and twice as many user talk edits as all your main, main talk, HRWiki, and HRWiki talk edits combined (not counting sandbox). — It's dot com 06:42, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Because it's fine the way it is, and you really don't need to be editing meta-information about yourself. Besides, as you said on the talk page, that record isn't even that important anyway. — It's dot com 03:01, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

OK...I just thought it would be useful to redirect it, so that people who went looking for it would come to the right place...can at least have the talkpage redirect? You've said that I can't have "Yeltensic" as my sig, as I did for a while, or have "I'm Yelt" in parentheses; would it be OK if I included in my sig a link to my Wikipedia userpage, without the word "Yeltensic" visibly included, in this way: With crap, Granola (T C)? I won't change it until you approve that suggestion (if you do). With crap, Yeltensic (T C) 03:57, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
I see that you have a mention of it on your user page as well as a userbox linking to Wikipedia. Those are both fine with me. (By the way, just thought I'd point out that (H*R/wiki-related) userboxes are allowed here.) But I don't think it's appropriate for your sig at this time. You need to stop focusing on your old name and work on making a new, better name for yourself here. Crapfully crappy, It's dot com 04:07, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
That sounds reas-ON-able. I'm pretty attached to the name Yeltensic, since I've been using it for quite some time before HRWiki, but it is my fault that the name is tainted here. Oh well. With crap, Yeltensic (T C) 04:11, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

I really don't know what your deal is, but you need to get over it if it upset you that much. Maybe I should edit your page without asking you, huh? I think I can safely say that I was following the guidelines for my personal image. Now If you'll excuse me, I'm going to put it back up. No thank you very much, Republic of Stan Blah.

Blocking durations

As a senior sysop and an admin here, if we are being trolled by someone, for how long he or she should be blocked. I know that known trolls like NSMC, Dr. Who and others are blocked forever, but what about small calibar trolls? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:53, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

It's pretty much a judgment call in almost all cases. For IP addresses, 1 to 3 days, depending on the severity of the vandalism. For really bad stuff, a week or so. If a vandal is obviously changing IPs within a narrow range, blocking the range X.X.X.0/24 (or 23) usually works. Users who make useful contributions should be reasoned with first if possible, not blocked. Accounts created for no purpose other than to vandalize should be blocked infinitely. Hope that helps! — It's dot com 19:13, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
Thank you very much. It sure will help! Elcool (talk)(contribs) 19:44, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

New sysops

Was there a sysop nomination? If so, I'm surprised that Lapper wasn't one. — Seriously (Talk) 22:34, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Anyone who had made any edit since around the beginning of February was considered. Of the ones we took, they were each chosen not only because they are deserving but also to fill certain niches. As we say, we will add new sysops as our circumstances warrant, and this time circumstances warranted the number and specific users that we took. I can name a half dozen other users who will someday make excellent sysops, and anyone who was not chosen this time should not read into it negatively in any way. — It's dot com 22:58, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
When I posted the above, I couldn't say what I can say now: We were still considering some people, and some people simply don't check their email often enough! Yes, I believe the seven new sysops that we have just inducted are it for a while. We've always got our eyes open, though. Remember also that all users can be important users. I did some of my best stuff (including STUFF) before I was promoted. (It's kinda funny too... what a lot of people don't realize is that sysop = more headaches.) — It's dot com 05:48, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

User groups

I have a question: I know what a sysop does, and I know what a beaurucrat does, but what do you get to do as a developer that nobody else can? I'm just wondering what it means it have the promotion. Thanks. — Seriously (Talk) 21:46, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

For those of you following along at home, I was technically made a bureaucrat and a developer on the same day. The only reason I wasn't added to the developer group in the wiki software is because there's a subtle difference between being a developer and being in the developer group. At the time I was made a developer, the wiki developer group was inactive. Since then, we reenabled it, and when we did, I was put in the group, even though for practical purposes I was already in it. Make sense? Okay, now that we have that out of the way: Bureaucrats can assign and unassign users to groups (usually to make sysops), and can also rename users. People in the developer group can lock and unlock the database. That originally was the only function available, but since then I have extended it somewhat using my developer abilities. And here's the distinction: a developer has direct access to the server and database. They can see server logs, view raw database data, and modify system software (to improve upon it). — It's dot com 22:24, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
And is there anything special about Joey Day's "proprietor" group? --DorianGray
No, it was created for purely narcissistic purposes (Joey's words, not mine). -- Tom 22:42, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
This is true. There is nothing special about the proprietor user group. I'm not usually one to be so narcissistic, but I thought it made some sense, and I did it mostly because I could. We've never been able to create custom user groups before MediaWiki 1.5, or I might've created a proprietor group a long time ago. Actually, in a way this is the opposite of narcissistic, as it allows for the possibility of others having proprietorship at some time in the future, and adds a layer of abstraction between myself and the title of proprietor. In the past, we've always linked directly to my user page in places where we mention the proprietor, but we should change all those places to link to the proprietor list. Ok. I've got to admit, somewhat grudgingly, that you caught me earlier. I AM in fact Dr. Who. But I really wasn't planning on using this account for vandalism. Yesterday after I attacked the fanstuff wiki I saw that I had hurt someone's feelings and I felt terrible when it put a personal face on what I'd done. I'm ready and willing to talk to you about why and how I did all of that trolling if you just give me this chance. Of course, I would understand if you banned me right away, but I'm asking you to give it a try. Sincerely, Taco Salad of My Dreams

I can't speak for all the other sysops, but I won't ban you if you're willing to talk civilly. The whole reason I posted on your talk page was to find out about you and talk to you. — It's dot com 02:33, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
Ok then, here goes. I believe the first trolling I ever did was under the name "you smell", where I added that phrase several times to the Characters page. I decided that it was funny that someone coming to learn would see that (yes, I know, very immature and stupid of me). That was the full extent that I knew of what I was doing. I later learned of the concept of wiki vandalism from Uncyclopedia. I have been using this wiki for years without knowing exactly how maintenance worked; when I did I became jealous of the sysops. I wished to make a name for myself here without doing years of work (rather like WoW, I was trying to gain infamy). My attacks became somewhat meaner as I went on, and I attacked users when I got tired of simply tampering with content. I started thinking of ways to justify it to myself, such as that injustice was being done to me over userboxes, or that my name alone had gotten me banned. I guess I saw it as a way to "break loose" because I am normally NOT a rude or confrontational person. I just stopped for two reasons: I was ashamed of myself, and I was inspired by the way Yeltensic had turned himself around. In any case, I am deeply sorry. The least I can do is tell you how I did the vandalism so that you can better protect against anything that might happen in the future.
I used two dynamic IP's: Safari and AOL. Aol has a set of three or four dynamic IP's that change within a narrow range from page to page. Safari's IP changes once every day, but it usually retains the first two segments (75.123.12.32, 75.123.32.34.... and so on). I opened numerous windows at once and typed in my edits and (sigh) summeries. This way the vandalism was at a high speed. I hope at least me telling you this helps (or rather, that you won't need it). Taco Salad of My Dreams
I am willing to give you a chance. Several of your latest incarnations have actually showed some promise, and I hope you can build on that. Once again, I can't speak for all users and sysops, but in general we're a pretty forgiving bunch. I caution you that you will have to prove yourself (assuming others also give you a chance), and our collective patience with you might not be what it would be for a normal new user.
Thanks for the technical info (although I did already know that, by the way; that's how I was able to post on your talk page before you'd even made any real edits). — It's dot com 02:58, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for that page move. As I saw the whole thing unfold on Recent changes, I thought "what the heck is he doing"? — Seriously (Talk) 02:54, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Hey, do me a favor: Instead of pressing [edit] over on the right to start a new topic, please press the [ + ] (plus) button at the top of the page (in between the main edit button and the history button). (Or, at the very least, please clear the old subheading from the edit summary.) Thanks. — It's dot com 03:02, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

I always wondered what that button did. Cool, I'll try hard to remember to. — Seriously (Talk) 03:09, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

H*bad

I would like to request to have my user name changed from H*bad to something else, at the fanstuff wiki, how do I do that?--H*bad 03:56, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

If the name of our changing username page is any indication, I estimate it would be at HRFWiki:Changing username. — Lapper (talk) 13:28, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

IP Checking

There's been a fair amount of debate about accounts that seem to be all created by H*bad. Since we lack any ability to check for IP addresses, would you be able to see if the following accounts share the same IP?: H*bad, H*bad1, Darth Homestar Runner, Darth Homestar runner, Guyforerunner, Godzillarunner, Homestarrunner101, Running along. Any info you could get would be much combobulated. - Super Sam 01:04, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

They're the same (except I'm not sure about Guyforerunner). See also this discussion. — It's dot com 01:41, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
What in the world. My friend created H*bad1 at my house. Thats why he has the same IP address as mine, I believe. He called me up and told me that you guys are like people who want to put salt in an open wound. Why you do this to him? I will keep on fighting this little thing about H*bad1. I explained all of this cwap at My dark side--H*bad 05:52, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Um... yeah. Okay. First of all, don't let people make accounts using your computer, and if you do, have them choose a different name from you. (That still doesn't explain all the other names, by the way.) But I don't really want to get into it here, as it has been discussed on other pages, like you point out. Super Sam simply asked me whether the IPs matched and I answered him. — It's dot com 06:02, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

MediaWiki Extensions

Cool, two headings in a row. Alrighty, I have two things to talk about. One - would you be able to post your source code for the extensions you wrote somewhere, such as here? Two - do you know how to add a tab from within an extension? I figured out how to do it by editing SkinTemplate.php, but is there any way to have the same effect through an extension? (I'm trying to add a purge tab next to watch/unwatch). - Super Sam 10:22, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

I do plan to publish the extensions I have written. They need a bit of polishing, standardizing, and commenting before I would post them in a public place, however. As for the tab thing, I'm guessing you want more of an add-on file rather than a patch in the original file? I'm not currently familiar enough with how the tabs are generated to be able to give you a good answer to that one, but I would be surprised if it could be done with a standalone extension. — It's dot com 10:37, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Alrighty, thanks. - Super Sam 11:42, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Here's a little way to add a purge button using your monobook.js that I came up with and Dot com fixed to actually work properly:
//Add purge cache button
 function addPurgeButton()
 {
     var href = document.location.href;
     {
         var historyHref = document.getElementById( "ca-history" ).firstChild.href;
         var div = document.getElementById( "p-cactions" );
         var ul = div.getElementsByTagName( "ul" )[0];
         var newLi = document.createElement( "li" );
         var newA = document.createElement( "a" );
         newA.setAttribute( "href" , historyHref.replace( "=history" , "=purge" ) );
         var text = document.createTextNode( "Purge" );
         newA.appendChild( text );
         newLi.appendChild( newA );
         ul.appendChild( newLi );
     }
 }
if ( window.addEventListener ) window.addEventListener( "load" , addPurgeButton , false );
else if ( window.attachEvent ) window.attachEvent( "onload", addPurgeButton );
Let us know how that works. -- Tom 19:04, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Captcha on move page

I'd like to ask you a question, and if it's been asked before, I'm very sorry. I'd just like to ask what the purpose of applying a CAPTCHA to the Move Page over on the Fanstuff Wiki is. --Thatkidsam 23:49, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

It's to prevent a bot from being able to move pages as vandalism, and to discourage human vandals from doing the same. — It's dot com 23:53, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
If that's the case, why isn't it the same here? If I recall correctly (which is unlikely), this knowledge base has had more page-move vandalism than the Fanstuff. --Thatkidsam 00:01, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Er... It is the same here. — It's dot com 00:05, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Grizzly Chomps

Hi It's dot com,

I had a question, and I'm not sure where else to put it. Can you explain why you didn't you think my "Grizzly chomps" fun fact in the Candy Product was a good one? I may be biased, but I think it applies pretty well. TBC have been known to reference old and obscure pop-culture items in the past, and I can't think of any other "pre-bitten" candy product sold in stores. I'd like to think they had this product in mind when they made the toon. You can even Google for it and read up on it.

Anyhow, I just wanted to know what my options were for debating this fact. Is this is something I could put in STUFF for debate? And if so, how?

The submission was:

  • The "built-in bite" shape of SBLOUNSKCHED! may refer to Grizzly Chomps, a Hostess-brand treat introduced in 1992. The package included two chocolate cupcakes with a bite-mark shape cut out of them, and the package bore a cartoon bear saying, "I start 'em, you finish 'em."
I removed it because the Grizzly Chomps are so old and obscure that any similarity to SBLOUNSKCHED is likely just a coincidence. None of the secondary details match, especially the reason for the bite. In the case of Grizzly Chomps, the bear helps you eat it for some reason, but Strong Bad calls the bite in his candy a security measure to deter others from eating it. I think that TBC independently thought it was funny to have a bite missing from the candy, and to suggest otherwise is too much speculation for my taste.
That said, I am more than willing to help you set up a STUFF item. The relevant instructions are at HRWiki:STUFF/Newfact. You need to start at "2. The STUFF subpage". Hope that helps! — It's dot com 17:37, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
I went ahead and STUFF'd it for you. You can have the next one. :) — It's dot com 17:48, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks! I appreciate that. Compdude

Looking at the Block list, I saw that you banned User:Fire Man. Are you sure you've got the right guy? Looking at his contribs he only made one edit and it wasn't anything bad. Declaring War

Isn't there a rule against declaring war? Isn't that anti-Wiki? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 07:12, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

I don't think anyone's ever enumerated a list here that specifically included "do not declare war," but I can say for sure that it's a very bad idea. — It's dot com 07:20, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Indeed. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 07:26, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
*sigh* Yeah, that. If he keeps it confined to what he's already said, then I'm probably not going to worry about it too much (although I did have to remove some trolling (for those just passing by, note the difference between trolling and vandalism)), but if he actually moves the article against consensus or tries to escalate his "war" in any other way, there will be trains dropped. — It's dot com 07:34, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
I'm just glad I'm on your side. Trains are dangerous! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 07:38, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
See, that's the thing. I hate that sides even have to be taken. I had hoped when I made this edit that we could reach a suitable compromise (which seems to be fine with everyone except him). *sigh* again. — It's dot com 07:45, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Yeah I realized that, I was pretty much experimenting with that stuff before. I got rid of some and just kept scroll buttons on the lists in my page, like my favorite music and cool users. Well, I'm pretty sure the answer there is yes in most cases, it's moot if you want to use one here. Only developers can run Wikibots. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
While that's true, Kookykman, he might asking in general. Sorry, Bluebry. I'm not the one to ask about bots. You might try Joey, Tom, Phlip, or even others. I'm much more content to hack the software from the inside rather than use a bot from the outside. — It's dot com 22:42, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Unless you have über-1337 haxx0r access like our friend It's dot com here, the only way you're going to be doing anything to the wiki is with normal page loads, ie exactly as if you were editing it by hand, just automated. So any language that you can use to access the net you could theoretically use to write a bot. However since many languages have packages to simplify HTTP, these languages would be easier to use, and some languages (like Python) even have pre-built wikibot frameworks for you to work off. But this doesn't say you can't go and write your wikibot in pretty much any language – it's simply a matter of how hard it is to write. Python is a simple-to-learn language anyways. I doubt you would ever write a bot that used PHP, and rarely would you write one that used MySQL. And of course if you prefer to work with socket and connect in C, there's nothing stopping you from doing that either... it would just be extremely tedious to write. --phlip TC 23:23, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Now, I'm still new to programing, but I heard C. Would C be anything like C++? And I don't want to hear anything about developer status either. Bluebry 23:52, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Dangeresque change

(First off I'm new here so I don't know if I'm doing this right. Just so you know)

I'm the guy that changed the Dangeresque character page to note that dangeresque's glasses somehow stay on his head despite his total lack of ears. You changed it back, saying "(that's true, but it's not really very notable)"

Not notable? This is homestarwiki! You've got an entire page on the battle of strongbadia, despite the fact that it only applies to one email. And allow me to quote some other character pages...

Homestar: "Though he lacks a visible pair of arms, he is still able to function as though he has them, being able to carry and throw things and even type proficiently. It's generally accepted that either he does have arms, but for reasons that are never explained, they are invisible, or that he has limited telekinetic powers. "

Bubs: "His facial configuration is puzzling; in Pumpkin Carve-nival, he appears to have a safety pin stuck through his face above an internal ear."

Marsipan: "Like Homestar, Marzipan has no visible arms, though she is able to interact with the world as though she did, being able to pick up and move objects, and even play a guitar. It is generally accepted that either her arms are invisible, or that she has limited telekinetic powers."

Strong Bad:"He has boxing gloves for hands (that always have square window reflections on them, no matter where he is), and a lucha libre mask for a head [...] Strong Bad may also have a Homestar-like telekinesis"

Um...so yeah. I'm not mad or anything. I just wanted to point out that dangeresque's floating glasses can probably be considered significant if all this other stuff is on the site. (Hey, you could even tie it in with Strong Bad's rumored telekinesis, right?)

In conclusion, sorry this comment was so long. I guess I'll check back on this page later to see if you offer a counter-argument. Thanks for reading!

First of all, let me say thank you for taking the time to write such a lengthy comment. Why not take a second and create an account? I agree with you that Dangeresque's glasses do not seem to have anything supporting them (although I suppose one could argue that they are held to his face by tension or even glue). My main problem with noting it on the Dangeresque page is that it really breaks up the flow of that sentence (which is based largely on the Dangeresque theme). In addition, the information isn't really that central to the character; it's more like TBC just worked in the glasses as best they could given the features of Strong Bad's head. I'm not suggesting that we not note the information anywhere. Perhaps you could put it in the list of references to other apparently invisible body parts. Again, thanks for your note, and welcome to the wiki! — It's dot com 03:07, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Broken link

Just letting you know, the link near the bottom of your page that is supposed to lead to the discussion concerning the email blockquote styles is broken. I need some help

Hey there its dot com, how are you, how;s easter in america(if you celebrate it?)?

I need to ask you something, do you happen to know any Homestar runner wikipedias that are star wars fans?

by the way, happy easter

Nikolce Kocovski 01:35, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

A quick search in the user and user talk namespaces turns up a number of users who may be fans of Star Wars. Hope this helps. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 02:05, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Just a little hello

Hey there, It's dot com. Homsarroks here. I just wanted to drop by and say hey and that you're cool.

Image:Homsar-in-motion.gifhr.pngΨHomsarΨroksΨImage:kookysig.gifImage:Cheat-shrug-tiny.gif 13:32, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

P.S. Just out of curiosity, why did you revert my edits on the HR Wiki article on wikipedia? I tried to include the most important users on the wiki there (e.g. you, Tom, BazookaJoe, Some H*R Themed Username, etc.) and put accurate descriptions on what you did there. I'm not mad or anything, just a bit confused. Get back to me when you can.

P.P.S. I left this message on your account on Wikipedia first, but I decided to put it on both your accounts so that you might get it sooner.

See yas!

Actually, you didn't include BazookaJoe. I put him in shortly before removing the list. The reason I took it out is that it's so subjective. What makes a user notable? That list could have easily been four times as long. I decided that it would be better not to have it at all. As something of a compromise, I inserted a link that pointed to the list of sysops (even though I know that not all of the sysops are active). — It's dot com 21:20, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I can understand that. THanks for the reply.--Image:Homsar-in-motion.gifhr.pngΨHomsarΨroksΨImage:kookysig.gifImage:Cheat-shrug-tiny.gif 22:07, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

We need the "Recent Changes" notice to be at the top of every page.

Yeah. Not everybody checks that. --Da M-izz-uTizzalk 19:13, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Why do you need a sitenotice? People who don't check the recent changes just won't find out. — It's dot com 19:16, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
So it's not really that big of a deal? --Da M-izz-uTizzalk 19:18, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Personally, I'd recommend putting the notice, or something like it, on the Main Page. This is big news, and there are a lot of fans who may not find out because they don't have accounts, don't check their user pages, Watchlist or Recent Changes, etc. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 19:22, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Yeah. --Da M-izz-uTizzalk 19:48, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
People who visit the wiki on such an informal basis as you describe are not likely to have the same feelings towards the situation as regular and power users like us. These types of users are the ones the current message is directed towards. We've added it to the historical record of events, but we will not add it to the current updates if The Brothers Chaps don't mention it on H*R.com. The general community can find out through the Don Chapman article, as well as various other mentions throughout several articles. Death is a touchy subject, especially when it effects our heroes. The Admins are treating this with the utmost discretion, please respect our decisions and the feelings of the Chapman family. Thanks. -- Tom 19:58, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

hAcKEr

Why did you write hAcKEr in binary in your User Box? Oh well... You don't have to answer. By the way, people say your cool. I guess I agree. Steve 22:01, 22 April 2006

I wrote hAcKEr, eh Steve? Heh, that's been there for months, and to the best of my knowledge you're the first one to decode it. (If you're not the first to decode it, then you're certainly the first to say anything.) I write extensions and make changes to the MediaWiki software at the source-code level, which is called hacking. I am a MediaWiki hacker for this wiki. Thanks for noticing and posting! Special Pages

Can only Sysops edit Special Pages? ----Dacheatbot · Communicate 00:46, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Generally, pages listed as Special pages are ones that are protected or generated by the wiki. As such, they are not editable by the common user, or by anyone. What makes a page uneditable to a common user like you or I is the protect template. See the image on the Main Page for an example, no edits can be made to it by someone lower than sysop. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:50, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
I understand, but how did someone add the template to recent changes? --01:06, 24 April 2006 (UTC)--Dacheatbot · Communicate
The text on most special pages (including the recent changes page) is handled by pages in the MediaWiki namespace. And yes, only sysops can edit these pages. The text in the message at the top of the recent changes, watchlists, and login screen is sub-controlled by a template ({{recentchangesnotice}}) that we placed on the relevant MediaWiki pages. — It's dot com 01:34, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Appropriate Username

I have a question about the user Old timey Strong Bad. Is that username appropriate, because I think it isn't really due to the similarity to Old-Timey Strong Bad. Lopp3 (Talk | contribs) 21:35, 26 April 2006 (left unsigned)

Our general prohibition against using the name of a character only seems to extend to the main characters. Secondary or variant characters are generally okay. — It's dot com 21:40, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Username Change

If at all possible, please get around to changing my username. I left two notes on the HRWiki:Changing username page, but I still haven't had my name changed after a few days. · · T2|Things 14:32, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

You left your second request for a username change at 12:37, 27 April 2006 (UTC), only twelve hours and sixteen minutes after your first request. It has not even been one day, let alone a "few days." Please be patient. -- Tom 21:38, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

65.167.69.XX

Hey, I did a little investigation. This IP range is notorious. I found blocks on it back to November, and comments that it is probably WoW. I know we gotta be reluctant to block a range, but I wanted to call your attention to this particular case. Take a look at the Block Log for the last 6 months to see what I am saying. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 13:41, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Poughwhatsie?

Actually, that's what I thought when that addition showed up a few days ago. It seemed like completely random trivia until I looked down at the context; "Poughkeepsie" is the destination in Homestar's word problem about trains entering tunnels. I guess this addition was an attempt to explain its significance (otherwise, why should two guys in Atlanta choose it aside from the funny-sounding name?). But if it's reinstated, it would need some rewrite to explain that (so the reader doesn't have to do the same thing I did). —AbdiViklas 05:07, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Meh, I don't see the point of including all that info, especially if there's any kind of link that can be clicked. It's barely mentioned in the toon. — It's dot com 05:13, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Patrolling

Perhaps you can clear something up for me? Are all users allowed/encouraged to patroll recent changes, or only those who have committed to the official "recent changes patrol"? Point7Q 03:07, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

It's not necessary to sign up (although it's nice to know who has committed to the work). I never patrol an edit unless I am pretty sure of (1) the overall content of the article, (2) the intent of the editor, and (3) whether or not the edit is good for the article. (Vandal edits still get marked as patrolled, but the article is immediately reverted. Likewise, edits that add incorrect information are either reverted or reworked as the situation warrants. By marking an edit as patrolled, I am saying either that an edit was good or that I'll fix it.) Hope that helps! — It's dot com 03:16, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
It does. Someday I may sign up for the patrol, but I think I want to observe for a while first. I'm still really new at determining the validity of edits, as my [recent adventure] with STUFF demonstrates. Point7Q 03:21, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

As you might have already noticed, I have finally joined up. However, patrolling has brought a new question: What standards do you use for the Talk pages? I assume they still need to be patrolled, but is that just to watch for cursing, flaming and the like? - Point7Q 03:35, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Even more recent block

I was wondering about the IP address you just blocked. I looked at his contributions, and his vandalism wasn't much. At least it didn't deserve a month-long block, in my opinion. So why did you blcok him for that long? Also, how did you know he was using the computer system at that school? Quizzical in someplace beginning with Q, — Seriously (Talk) 20:09, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

I understand that you want to feel like you're in the loop, but unfortunately you do not have the standing here to question my actions in this way. Rest assured that I know exactly what I'm doing and have discussed matters with other admins. — It's dot com 20:49, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Sorry. I wasn't trying to question your authority. I know well enough through my experience here that you have some of the best judgment I've ever seen. I would never question your actions. If you took it seriously, I apologize. — Seriously (Talk) 20:53, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Recent change of the template that says "do not create this page"

Checking IPs

I know I can't check them on here, but I was wondering were you go to check who has what IP.--H*bad 21:33, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

There are around half a dozen ways, none of which I'm going to elaborate on here. If you look through the MediaWiki documentation, it might give you some insights. — It's dot com 21:37, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
What is the link in the special pages that let me check Ip addresses. (The reason for my asking is because of my wiki.) The thing that I know that if I go there here, I will just get an error.--H*bad 16:00, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
If you installed your wiki yourself, then you already have the access necessary to check IPs. If it's a wiki-in-a-can, then it's likely that you don't have the extensions installed that you would need for that. Again, check your documentation. — It's dot com 16:04, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, it involves making changes in about six spots of existing code. It's not just like adding an extension. If we don't upgrade real soon, then I'll see about making an exception to our lockout of changes to 1.5. — It's dot com 18:48, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Where's the page?

When I try to get into the "Where's the Cheat?" page from the H*R updates page, it says "no page with that title exists," but when I get into it from the "Toons" section, it works fine. Is there a broken link, or is the problem at my end? Point7Q 14:04, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

To clarify, the link found at H*R.com updates 2002#Tuesday, February 26, 2002 for Where's The Cheat? doesn't work, but the one at Toons#Big Toons does? What's really odd is that the error you're receiving is MediaWiki:Nogomatch, which I thought was only shown when there's no exact match for a search done with the "Go" button. Is that the message you're seeing? -- Tom 14:15, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
The closest I came to duplicating this problem is to type "Where's The Cheat" (without a question mark) in the search box. It also gives a similar error if you type "Where's The Cheat?" (with or without the question mark) in the URL. I'm going to make a redirect to fix those two things, but otherwise I can't recreate the problem as described. — It's dot com 15:19, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

When STUFF gets contradicted...

Hi, It's dot com. Here's a question that's been on my mind for a very, very long time (4 months):

What happens if we decline a STUFFed reference, thinking that it's unlikely, but then it turns out it was a reference after all? Say, for example, and I'm not saying that it is (even though I admit voting in favor), Happy Trogday WAS a homage to All Your Base, and that it is confirmed by TBC themselves on, say, the DVD commentary? – The Chort 18:31, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Well, we just write a nice letter to TBC explaining how they must be mistaken. Once we vote here, that's the end of it. :) Actually, this has happened several times (none springs to mind right this second, but I'm sure someone will list an example here shortly). In cases like that, we simply overturn our vote and note that TBC said so. — It's dot com 18:33, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
I haven't yet looked it up, but I believe that "Ryan S." from theme park was such an example. You're welcome. :D --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 18:38, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Here is the one example of which I'm aware. And concerning AYB: Even though I voted to decline, I have always felt it was possible that fact was correct, and will not be surprised if we do have to un-decline it (nor will I be surprised if we don't). Heimstern Läufer 18:39, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Sockpuppetness

I know sockpuppetry when I see it and I know that kk is a definate sockpuppet person. (I know how ironic) Anyways, I was wondering why it is that when someone creates an account on here, 2-3 others are created. So my question is, that do you beaucrats check every new user if they have another log in name?--H*bad 17:24, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

You have already asked me questions like this two or three times on this page, but I'm still not going to give you a straight answer. Nothing against you, but I don't like to post details of something like that. Nevertheless, it's probably not hard to infer certain things by posts I've made elsewhere. — It's dot com 18:02, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Thatkidsysop

Do you think you could make Thatkidsam a sysop on the Fanstuff Wiki? There's been a concensus for him to be added to the team. (I actually posted this on the official forum's admin thread a little while ago, but it's been hours without a response and there's already a bit of excitement on the wiki.) - Joshua 19:22, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

No wait. Lets make a discussion about this.--H*bad 19:38, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

No problem. For some reason that forum wasn't showing as having new messages for me. I know what it's like to be offered a promotion and then have to wait and wait for it to go through (in my case, the whole wiki was locked down for the server move). So I will not tell you to keep your pants on, for real. ;) H*bad, this talk page is not the right venue for a discussion on the promotion. In fact, simply by Joshua's posting here I assume that all the necessary discussion has already taken place. — It's dot com 20:05, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Oh, sorry. The reason was only because I was just wondering about it. Thats all.--H*bad 22:35, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Cool, Firebird, Qermaq, Coder, Jones, Jay, Kilroy, Lapper, Username, Dorian, Paper, and all the others... Hey, I just want to thank all of you for what you do for the Wiki. I used your page because you seem to be the only one logged on. 65.6.55.229 20:17, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Hey, Anonymous, why don't you write a really nice thank-you note and then not attribute it to yourself. (Oh, kids can be so cruel. Just kidding.) Thanks, man! It's nice to be appreciated! — It's dot com 20:26, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Both DorianGray and Qermaq, if I may speak for the community, are quite respected users. They have the right to be named in that list of thanks. And after all, 65.6.55.229 never once said the word "sysop" in his note. — Lapper (talk) 00:13, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Okay, it seems I misunderstood. Since almost every user on that list was a sysop, I figured it was thanking the sysops only. >.> — Seriously (Talk) 19:44, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Magical Sysop Powers?

I've noticed that you and the other sysops around here are able to identify a user by their IP number. I have my own little personal wiki, running on the exact same version of MediaWiki as this one, of course without any changes made to this wiki after installation. As far as I can tell, I have no such all knowing, ip reading powers as the sysop of my wiki. Is this something you guys have edited the HRWiki to be able to do or am I completely missing a huge power of being a sysop? —Zelinda 00:45, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

I have already asked. They won't say.--H*bad 00:47, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Eh, okay then. Another mystery of the HRWiki goes unsolved. —Zelinda 00:52, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
I think they want to do this to us.--H*bad 00:59, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
The bureaucrats at this wiki have installed the position of "developer". On some wikis it is called checkuser. It allows users to check IP addresses of users in addition to the normal sysop powers. So yes, it's edited in. - BubTalk
That's not quite right, but it's kind of close, so, yeah, let's go with that. — It's dot com 01:12, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Paranormal Idol

Could you check the IPs of Paranormal Idol and HomeTron V20 on the fanstuff wiki? I think they might be the same person. - BubTalk

Sorry, but a request for that info would have to come from a fanstuff sysop. — It's dot com 01:12, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Okay, could you please check the IPs of the following Fanstuff users: HomeTron V20, Paranormal Idol, Paranormal Idol2, Paranormal Idol3 and Ytmnd Boy. Here's the reason. (edited version of reasons written by Bub on HRFWiki:User talk:Joshua.)
HomeTron V20 was a player on an interactive game which Bub created. HomeTron apparently quit the wiki because his Fake Characters were getting deleted by Joshua (as per a different discussion). A couple of days later, a new user, Paranormal Idol joined the wiki. He then created two new accounts, Paranormal Idol2 and Paranormal Idol3, claiming that he lost the password to his original account. Paranormal Idol3 then joined the same interactive game. After playing it for a while and then dying (in the game), he left the wiki. A few minutes after this, Ytmnd Boy signed up and requested to be in Bub's interactive game using the same character as HomeTron V20. All of these users share the same style of grammar, spelling and the way they transcribe.
In my opinion, this seems like valid grounds for an IP check. - Super Sam 06:43, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Based on the IPs, they are the same user. — It's dot com 07:08, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

A few minutes ago, I got the new messages flag, and an e-mail saying that my talk page had been created by you. Do you know why this has occurred? - Super Sam 07:24, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Yes. I edited and saved your page without making any changes in order to force the system to send you that message but without creating a new version of your page. I hoped you would then guess that I had replied to you here, which you did, so it worked. :) — It's dot com 07:29, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Help Another Wiki?

Greetings from Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki. :) I'm one of the administrators over there (Jaymach, if you'd like to check) and I have been told by InterruptorJones that you may be able to help us with something we are attempting to implement over there. We're looking into possibly using your "Image Code" verification, but only want to use it for Page Moves rather than every Page Edit. Do you know if this is possible at all and, if it is, is there any chance you could inform us how to do so? Feel free to contact me on my talk page. Many thanks. It's okay, but you should be aware that people generally already know when their talk page has gotten pretty long. Pestering them about it rarely does more than annoy them. If you look at the top of the page, you'll see that I've already archived once before. Maybe I will again someday. Who knows, maybe even soon. Upgrade to 1.6 at the fanstuff wiki

Hey, awesome job, you and Tom really work harder than most people notice. The log in page is the best part, though. however, do you think you'll be able to add the poopsmith border again? I'm just wondering if 1.6 can't do that. — Seriously (Talk) 00:54, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

I love the RSS upgrade....But one question: Why did you upgrade the HRFWiki before the HRWiki? --Dacheatbot · Communicate 02:18, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
We try to shake down any problems we're going to encounter there before we apply the upgrade here. Not all fanstuffers are happy with this arrangement, but it's the best we've got, as it allows us to identify problems using a database that already has an enormous amount of content. If it's any consolation to them, we did spend an extensive amout of time testing the new features before we committed them to the live wiki. As for the Poopsmith, I don't know when or whether we'll be seeing him again soon. — It's dot com 05:25, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi

I was just lookin around on the wiki this morning and decided that I'd leave a brief hello message for you.

Hi, It's Dot Com.
I haven't really talked with you too much, so I felt like leaving you a message. What's up with you in real life lately? Anything cool happening that you'd like to talk about? Any interesting stories or other stuff? Are there any Wiki projects that need serious cleaning up or any pages that need creating? If so, I'd be glad to help with them. I don't really have too much wiki time any mroe, but I have a chance to be on this morning for a little while. I'd be glad to assist with any ongoing projects that are in need of serious help. If you get a chance, please reply on my talk page.

P.S. Could I add you to my friends list? I'd like to recognize you on my userpage for your remarkable work on this wiki over the time you've been here. Thanks for your time.

Well, sure. You can't have too many friends. To answer your other questions: The Rangers are still doing well, and that makes me happy. I can't think of any projects off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's some good ideas over at HRWiki:The Stick. I also can't think of any pages that need to be created. I wish they would release the next toon so we can make a page for it. (By the way, I replied here instead of your talk page because it's generally better to keep discussion in one place.) Talk atcha later! — It's dot com 16:36, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Deleting user names

Hey Dot com. I heard from some very reliable sources that you guys can delete user names.--H*Bad 14:09, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

"Can" is such a big word. Of course I can delete usernames. I can delete the whole wiki. (Not that I'm going to.) As for whether I will delete usernames, the answer is no; in general our policy is not to do that. Who said otherwise? — It's dot com 14:18, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
It just seems like its not a very good idea to keep a username on the list, like NSMC, some inappropriate usernames, Willy on wheels, etc. Well maybe not NSMC, for historical reasons. And I never said anyone said otherwise.--H*Bad 14:23, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, can can also just change there username to something else. I'm not saying that he's going to. He might but I doubt it. --TheThin 14:27, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Really? When was it done? Also, I found out mediawiki 1.7 will be coming out in July.--H*Bad 14:46, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Great. I'd hate for them to actually use a version for a while. — It's dot com 14:50, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, they told me that its going to look much better than 1.6.--H*Bad 14:53, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
In reply to the other question: It was used after NSMC's vandalism was cleaned up. All the individual accounts were deleted and consolidated into one account. - BubTalk

El Cid... lcid... Are Cid... rcid...

Hey! What's "rcid"? —AbdiViklas 16:58, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

It's the "Recent Changes ID". Each entry in the `recentchanges` table has a unique ID, which shows up in the URL when you click "diff" from Special:Recentchanges on an edit that hasn't been patrolled. The "rcid" part tells the system to display the "park as patrolled" link as you view the diff (even if the edit has already been patrolled), and so it's not necessary to be included in a link on a talk page. — It's dot com 17:09, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Rangers

And I just got back. They won! Back to back homeruns. It was cool. Hey were you there? Or were you there at the July 4th game?--H*Bad 03:27, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
No, I didn't get to go to that one. (That's too bad, 'cause I love patriotic-themed fireworks.) Glad your game was good, and hey, they're tied for first right now! — It's dot com 06:30, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Bad wording...

Hey Dot com. I was wondering about your accually typing the word (A good way of saying it) whatsit on a page. I know you already know this, but there are little kids on here. Can you reword it, please?--H*Bad 04:45, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

No, I'm not going to reword it. There is a difference between using a word and referring to a word as a word. Assuming that the user doesn't already know what his name means, then there would be no way to explain to him what the problem is without resorting to pedantic euphemism or a click-through, both of which are unnecessary given that (1) we should be mature enough to calmly discuss any subject, (2) the whole name itself is already as offensive as or more offensive than its components, and (3) the likelihood that a random user will find that page is close to zero. If it makes you feel better, I'll put a language warning there. — It's dot com 00:11, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, I was just making sure that everything is G or Pg rated here.--H*Bad 18:19, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

/wiki/ redirect

I asked Interruptor Jones about this, and he told me to tell you, so... I think /wiki/ should redirect to /index.php/ because whenever I want to look something up in HRWiki by typing in the URL, I invariably end up typing "/wiki/" and getting the ol' 404. I'd just add Redirect permanent /wiki/ http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/ somewhere in the .htaccess file, and it should work automatically. I think it'd be even better to do it the other way around and make "/wiki/" the canonical form and have index.php redirect to that instead, but not having used the MediaWiki software, I don't know the exact configuration options. Oh... and ever thought about moving some of the stuff on this huge talk page to an archive page? ;) - furrykef (Talk at me) 16:46, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Isn't typing the URL out a bit cumbersome? Why not create a smart-keyword instead? -- Tom 20:20, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
It's the way I've always done it, and it doesn't feel so cumbersome after having done it a million times with Wikipedia. Other people might not be aware of smart keywords (I wasn't until just now). Besides, what's the harm in setting up a redirect? :) - furrykef (Talk at me) 21:26, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
I'm not inclined to hack the wiki to aid one person's "way of always doing it". There are easier client-side options for what I percieve to be a client-side issue. Sorry. -- Tom 00:38, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
But is it just one person's way of always doing it, or are other people doing it, too? And I still don't see the harm in just adding a line to .htaccess; you wouldn't even have to restart the server or anything. - furrykef (Talk at me) 03:08, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
It's not that your request isn't easy to fulfill. I presented you with an alternative that would actually be quicker than if I made the change and you typed the entire URL. I don't see this as a problem with the wiki, I see it as an issue that is unique to a single user's behavior. Though I have to admit, I still might consider changing the index.php in the URL to wiki (making wiki the canonical form), but I'd want to go over the consequences of such a change with others first. (Note that this was discussed once before.) -- Tom 04:36, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm unindenting so this doesn't get too wide... anyway, we still haven't even established that I'm the only one who types /wiki/ -- do you have error log statistics to back it up, maybe? I also think the redirect would be a good idea because it would be more consistent with other wikis (I believe most of the most popular MediaWiki sites use /wiki/); inconsistency is why I make this error in the first place. I could make further arguments, for example, that the URL is part of the user interface of a website, and any user interface should anticipate user error. (It's not uncommon for a text-based program to understand both "exit" and "quit", for example.) I could make an analogy with "typo redirects" on wikis. I know, it sounds silly to back up such a little thing like this with so much, but it just feels like a redirect is the Right Thing. (I guess becoming a webmaster is having this effect on me.) Well, I don't suppose there's any more I can say on this subject, so do what you're gonna do. :) - furrykef (Talk at me) 20:20, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

PHP upgrade

Special:Version still says that we're running PHP 4.4.2. Upgrade to PHP 5 unsccessful? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 06:34, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Delayed. Turns out we need to upgrade RHEL so that we can upgrade Apache so that we can upgrade PHP so that we can upgrade MediaWiki. We're going to try again over the weekend. (We did upgrade from 4.3.x to 4.4.2, for any of you keeping score at home.) — It's dot com 06:42, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Upgrading RHEL and Apache might not be necessary after all. We should have the CAPTCHA problem (which is really a missing libraries problem) fixed with the upgrade as well, which according to my information should be any time now. — It's dot com 00:11, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

A lot of places in China aren't like that, or so I hear. But then again, China is growing like crazy in terms of technology and modernization. It seems like everyone here has a cell phone. Like, more oft than in the USA. I don't have time to say much more now, though. We'll talk more when I return. Heimstern Läufer 05:30, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Old main page style

Don't get me wrong, I love the new style, but there are still people complaining (well, on the forum). Is there a way to put that old style as one of the skins in the preferences? If it's too much work, it's fine with me, I like this style better, but some people don't. Ed lim smildE / talk

We're not going to create and maintain another skin just for that old style. There are instructions out there somewhere on customizing one's personal CSS to make the main page like the old style. — It's dot com 17:42, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
That works. I'll just tell people that. Ed lim smildE / talk

Ok, this has been bothering me for a while, why on the STUFF instructions page is the words quick reference guide, in red?--H*Bad 03:43, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Guitar riff from "Personal favorites"

I noticed that the QotW page lacks the sound file for the "Wicked Guitar Solo". I have a copy of that file lurking here, though the file upload page seems to want images, so I figured I'd better not chance it. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

long time no see

Hey there It's dot com, how have you been, havn't spoken in a long time, but now i can bacause its the school holidays for me. What's been happening with you?

Guess what: i recently had a maths and science test, and i got GOOD scores. 100% for science, and 107% for maths.

ps: i need to ask you something, you remember the time i asked you why you don't like the later seasons of simpsons, well on your userpage, it also says you don't like the later seasons of family guy either, whats the reason? Can i say , to me sometimes the recent episodes aren't the same as before. some of them use the same joke as before eg: marge and homer repeatetl arguing. Marge has changed alot, before she was a likeable character, now she seems.... different, do you get me?

Final note: What would be your favourite quotes of the simpsons, from the top of my head it's:

"And i say, a monkey can mown our lawn". Homer of the distance. "I fell 8000 feet onto a pile of jagged rocks". Abe Simpson. "(Austrian accent)Good-moring and welcome to advanced physics,1-0-1, i see alot of new faces, but as the old saying goes: "Out with the old, in with the Nuclues".(everyone laughs except homer). "Now let me just- whoops(drops notes). Homer stars laughing hard:"aha aha hah haha, a did you see that jerk, ah ah ah ha hah , AAAAAA he DROPED HE'S NOTES, AAAAAAA HAH HA H AH H aAAAAAAAAAA HA HA H A.

To me, this is one of my favourite episodes, mostly becasue i can make jokes to my brother about him being in University himself: "Have you spoken with your Austrian professor yet", and "Have you found your secret "Dungeons and Dragons lairr, thats has Nerds secretly studing and playing with characters at level 40" etc.

talk atch you later (sp) Nikolce Kocovski 05:17, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

i forget to ask you so so, something serious: How do you make those things on wiki that link to other websiter, like insted of having this website in full writing: http://youtube.com/watch?v=nf1VMk0o4Iw, you shorten it into a small thing, how's it done?

ps: at this video on youtube, go to the time 09:26, this is where the joke is where homer is laughing.

Permanent Edit Removal

I remember how the last time the Fanstuff got attacked by a troll who placed highly unappropriate images on pages, you permanently deleted those versions of the pages from the database. You may want to do that again with edits by the troll NKSCF. Most of the pages he put images on were deleted (not sure if you still want to delete them from the database), but there's one on Y2K's userpage that still remains. - Super Sam 08:52, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

You could just delete the page, and then restore all the edits except that one... it would still be in Special:Undelete, but you don't need admin powers to do it. --phlip TC 08:59, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Update Icons

It's dot com, I noticed a bit of some messy whitespace on the edges of two of the Main Page update icons (Image:update-cs.png and Image:update-ps.png). They look fine when they're situated at the top of the Main Page, where the gradient is lighter, but as you add more saturation to the background, the white edges really start to come through. Take a look toward the bottom of the Main Page to see what I mean. Anyways, I went ahead and tried to clean them up for you a bit, but unfortunately I was unable to upload new versions, since they're both set as protected pages. (As an aside: why are they set as protected pages in the first place?) The versions I made might look rougher on a purely white backdrop, but I think they blend pretty nicely on the gradient background on the main page, comparatively speaking. So here they are, use them if you like:

  • updatepsqm5.png
  • updatecsej0.png

--Soapergem Talk.png Contrib.png 00:12, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

The problem with the images you made is that they use an 8-bit transparency, which is currently not recognized by Internet Explorer. Enough of our readership still uses IE that we have to go with the older 1-bit transparency. Thanks for trying, though! The images are protected because they are on the main page, and otherwise it would very easy for someone to upload something very objectionable in their place. — It's dot com 00:30, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Userboxes and Homsar Quotes

Hi there its dot com!! Loafing redirected my problem to you. I made a Homsar random quote userbox (see my User Page - first on the userbox list) and was trying to add it to the Userbox page for the benefit of the Wiki. So everyone could see it and enjoy the bounty of it's... well whatever it is the same as I do. So I go to the Userbox page and try to add it in. Problem. It won't add into the <userboxsample> tag because of the homsarquote template. Of course, it works OUTSIDE of the tag, so it works on my page and everywhere else. I just can't make it display in the table on that page. Any way that can be fixed? Thanks a ton. --Image:Stinkwing.gif »Bleed0range« 08:43, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Yes. The braces around the homsarquote template have to be escaped inside the userboxsamples tags. View this edit to see the method and the result. — It's dot com 13:49, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Sure thing. As Loafing just pointed out, it's still early for a poll. I feel that there are more ideas and discussion to be had first. Also, I don't think we need to have all 21 or whatever the number is now be included in the eventual poll. Just the best finalists. Sticklyman = Poopsmith 20X6?

You mentioned in one of your edit summaries that you would divulge any evidence that Sticklyman is the Poopsmith's 20X6 counterpart, but I can't find your answer. Does the commentary of "Under Construction" shed any light on the subject? Strong Sader 20:55, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Alas, it does not seem like Sticklyman and the Poopsmith are related in any way. They mentioned a couple of other generic references (under-construction icons in general; fighting stick-men in animé), but no mention of everyone's second-favorite guy (he's No. 2). — It's dot com 21:07, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Tampo isn't blocked and never was blocked. Why are you making such an odd request on behalf of a user that left on his own volition and hasn't been around in months? If he wanted to edit, he could quite literally just edit. Are you acting as his proxy by his request or is this your own doing? -- Tom 01:09, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Oh yeah. We'll think about it. — It's dot com 17:49, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
Dot com can feel free to revert this if he wants, but let me mention this - in real life, sometimes you run out of chances. You show up to work late too many times, eventually you are not going to be welcome there, and no amount of pleading will help. When you hurt a friend enough times, it can happen that they will no longer be your friend, despite any of your attempts to make up for it. I think if a person violates a wiki's way of doing business often enough and persistently enough, it's not unfair to say "Sorry, you aren't welcome here" at some point. I'll leave it to others to determine whether Tampo's abuses of the wiki were "too much", but honestly, if the decision were left to me and me alone, there's be no way someone with an established history of abuse would be allowed back in. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:03, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

The thing, after reading this discussion, it appears that a) this is more your idea than Tampo's and b) that he did not at all say that he's sorry. Please do not contact vandals with the aim of bringing them back to the wiki and then lie to us about what they said. Loafing 23:08, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Knowledge Base - Fanstuff Redirects

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you asking for a challenge I believe there's a column in the `interwiki` table named `iw_local` that allows redirects between local wikis. Could this be enabled for the Knowledge Base on the Fanstuff and vice versa? There are currently 18 such redirects currently on the Fanstuff and 3 on the Knowledge Base. It was prolly be more convenient if this was enabled. - Super Sam 06:37, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Note to self: "Keep your mouth closed more often Ilko." Sorry that I seem to be defeating myself (and the process to some extent) in the logo discussion. Move Page Modification

I was thinking that it would be convenient to have an option for sysops (and other people with the 'delete' permission) to have a checkbox when moving a page that would delete the redirect automatically without having to do it manually. So, I went and made some code changes to SpecialMovepage.php, and I have what I think is a working implementation of my idea.

All the technicalities out of the way, I'm asking if you could put this onto the Fanstuff. It would be of great convenience when reverting the page move trolls which are all too frequent now-a-days, and when fixing things such as Text Adventures subpages, which are a large problem. The code for 1.8.2 is here, and the system messages required are here.

Could you please think about this and let me know? Thanks a plenty, Super Sam 16:04, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

I believe there already is that function. I've done it a couple times this week. You have to press the move page button, and then another page will come up with the Delete & Move option. —BazookaJoe 16:08, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
That's a similar function - it deletes the page you're moving to, rather than the redirect it leaves. - Super Sam 01:59, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

A History - logo

Hey It's dot com, for this edit, was this discussed on the wiki on IRC? Either way, I think it would be good nugget of history if we knew when the discussions began in their most primative forms. I R F 17:02, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

duplicate accounts

Hey. I noticed that the user account Rico crazy? was created on 12/20/06 and Rico*crazy? was creadted on 12/21/06. Is this the same person? If so, where do we state that people can only have one account? I R F 17:55, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

On the one hand, duplicate accounts like that are not allowed, but on the other hand, we usually don't mess with trying to fix it unless there's some good reason. It seems to me (without actually looking anything up) that accounts like those don't tend to have many contribs, so it's not worth bothering over. — It's dot com 18:51, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
