Just a heads up

Just so you know, the PlayStation ('95) came out a year before the Nintendo 64 ('96), not the other way around, and CERTAINLY not a four-year headstart. You sure you didn't mix it up with the SNES ('91)? Babbage's doesn't stock those anymore, either (much to my chagrin). --Shadow Hog 00:28, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sig

Hey Invisible Robot Fish. I moved your signature template to the correct location. — It's dot com 21:18, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

It's me again. I removed some parentheses in the links that were also causing problems. Did you copy those from somewhere? If so, we need to edit that article to make it less ambiguous. — It's dot com 22:10, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm in the process of editing my sig, I'm not sure what your refering about the parentheses. Is that on a diff page? I am editing things in my sig and playing around with it for the first time. --22:31, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm talking about this edit, where I took out the parentheses that were causing the links not to work. — It's dot com 22:37, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
Thank you. I think I am getting the hang of it now. -- I R F 22:47, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
I think it's looking good. Although, it is just a little bit long. Perhaps without the leading image? Just a thought. — It's dot com 23:01, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
How bout now? I R F 23:13, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
Still a bit too big, and the image is to tall, it takes up more than one line of text. Maybe shorten "contributions" or something? small_logo.pngUsername-talk 23:16, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Interesting

Hey Invisible Robot Fish again again. I like Christian rock music too; the old-school Muppets are awesome; aviation is fascinating; and my dream job would be to be an MLB umpire. For reals. — It's dot com 12:37, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

You know some of the bands I like. I fly a Cecsna Skylane 182 RG. Although I want to get eventually get instrument rated and multi-engine so that I can get a Piper Saratoga. I also want to get Raytheon King Air in the next 10 years.
I officiate at high school Varsity and now Collegiate Level. I am aspiring to be a D1 college umpire. I had dreams of being a major league ump once, but that was short lived as I wasn't willing to pay the price of being in the minor for who knows how long just to maybe make it. Its a narrow door to get through. I R F 12:48, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
I like Christian rock also, Chris Tomlin probably being my favorite. Some others I like are Steven Curtis Chapman, Switchfoot (the less recent stuff) and some Jars of Clay songs (some of their music is just too slow for my liking). Oh, and in response to your thanks for the haikus: "No probalo!" Powered by The Kate 22:54, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
Jars of Clay has been downhill since their first album, and they have been disapointing in concert. Chris Tomlin just flat out rocks, we do a lot of his songs at our church. Steven Curtis Chapman has a special place in my heart becuase his song, "I will be here" was the song that we had our first dance to at our wedding reception. I R F 13:04, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
I love Steven Curtis Chapman's song "Live Out Loud" because it was kind of our "team spirit song" for my first ever mission trip. Every time I hear it I get this happy feeling and think, "That was the trip where I met about half of my best friends!" I have never seen Jars of Clay in concert before, so I wouldn't know how that was, but their music has been a disappointment (I think I spelled that wrong) to me. We do sing a lot of Chris Tomlin at our church, too, but most of our music is by Jesse Reeves, who, I recently discovered, my parents had in their youth group at one point. They got him into his first ever band, and he was apparently really good. I don't know if you've heard of him, but I just thought it was a cool connection to have. : ) Powered by The Kate 22:46, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
Nah, have never heard of him. Our praise band at church has gotten to the poing now where we are going to the recording studio and going to cut a few tracks. When we do I'll share them with yall. I R F 23:07, 9 February 2006 (UTC) Since I have ran a few state-wide events and retreats I have gotten to jam with a few big names; Charlie Hall, and Caedmon's Call (right after the wrote God of Wonders). Show Preview

I noticed you've been playing with your userpage to figure out how all of the markup code works here. It's certianly the right place to do it, and you are more than welcome to, but I have one request. Right below the edit box is a botton called Show Preview. You can click on it to show what the page will look like when you do save the changes, but it won't create an entry in Recent changes, which can get flooded rather quickly if you save every edit without a preview. It just makes things a lot easier for everybody. Thanks, small_logo.pngUsername-talk 12:41, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Will do. The page was loading differently in the Show Preview, but I'll use that more. I R F 12:50, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Do you hate me?

Invisible Robot Fish, many of your edit summaries concerning my edits are a real kick in butt. What's the deal? --Sam Goldfish 02:59, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

One thing I have realized while being here is that there are a few trump cards in this wiki. It's Dot Com, JoeyDay, and Tom are a few. There was a series of times within a 10 minute period where you continually reverted edit that had already been fixed. I can't say that I have never done that. But as noted on your talk page, this wasn't the first time that you had been told not engage in a reverting war. I am one of many people that patroll recent changes, and it seemed that all I was doing for 20 minutes was changing things back that you had done (most of which, were corrected by Its Dot Com). If memory serves me correct, you were deleting whole sections and images that didn't need to be deleted (except one, I will grant that one of your deletions was in fact a good one). So yes, at that time, I was frustrated and wanted you to stop changing pages that were just fine. Wiki pages undergo intense scrutiny to I think a laughable level. So if you see a fun fact from a toon that aired 2 months ago, chances are, its a good one. Grammar and spelling changes are always welcome, but give more thought before you delete whole fun facts that have been there for months. I R F 12:15, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

The Cheat's knife

That's not a fun fact candidate, so it doesn't belong on the STUFF page. I started a discussion here for you about the knife. — It's dot com 22:51, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Noted, I didn't know where else to put that. Thank you. I R F 23:15, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Images

Hi, Invisible Robot Fish. Just so you know, you can only have one personal image on your userpage. You have at least 4 by now: Image:Veggiepirates.jpeg, Image:Muppets.jpeg, Image:Ump.jpeg, and Image:Skylane.jpeg. You're going to have to choose one, and mark the others for deletion. Thanks. --DorianGray

I see you've chosen the VeggieTales pic. I'll take care of the others for you. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding. — It's dot com 17:13, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
I was looking on the help pages and couldn't find instructions to delete an image. Where is that help info located? I R F 17:14, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
It's just like any other page. Just go to the edit tab and add {{delete|personal image}} to the unwanted images. --DorianGray

Question

Hey there you seem like a experiaentes user so can you give me step by step instructions on how to get thouse cool signatures? PLEASE!

Everything I learned, I got from the Help section on your right hand side. Follow the instructions under 'signature' **tip** when practicing, use your userpage and the show preview button. I R F 20:33, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

History

Hello IRF. I was reading your userpage, and I noticed that you have apparently been around H*R for quite some time, perhaps one of the longest on the whole Wiki. Which got me thinking. Just how long have you been around, and how much do you remember about the pre-2002 era of H*R.com (the point where Live Journals runs dry as source info for H*R.com updates 2001). I look forward to hearing from you. Thunderbird 01:12, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

I can't remember when I discovered the wiki. I was a big Homestar fan starting about the end of high school, to my freshman year in college which was 1999 or 2000 (wow that was 3 computers ago!). I don't remember when I discovered the wiki but I know that I kicked around here for a LONG time before I actually got a username and starting contributing. As to what was on the site at that time, your asking me to invade memories that have long been washing away by many long nights at O'Sullivan's Wharf (Sully's we called it) in Norfolk, VA. I really don't remember. I do remember when 'Search for the Yello Dello' came out. Can you imagine a H*R world in which we didn't yet know that Coach Z couldn't say the word job?!?!
I R F 12:39, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
Wow.. And I thought that the fact the I remember japanese cartoon comming out makes me an old fan. Way to go! Elcool (talk)(contribs) 17:32, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
That's impressive. I only jumped on the bandwagon about the time labor day came out (suntan was the very first thing I saw, even before the main page or anything. My cousin sent me a link while chatting on MSN with me). Although I'm not sure if it was quite 1999 when you first found it, H*R.com started January 1st 2000. I guess you probably found it mid to end 2000. You remember before there were Strong Bad Emails I assume. I am curious though, do you remember how you first found it? Thunderbird 21:18, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Hmmm, there were definately a few emails, so perhaps my timeline is off, but I went to college in 2000 and it was a friend of mine that showed me it. H*R was a cult thing (in a good way) on our hall (which was really cool since no one else knew about it yet). We'd cruise the site, d/l from napster (still legal then) and then play either Motorcross through the LAN or You don't know jack. Ah college was certainly worth the 100 Grand I blew on it. I R F 21:32, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Hmmm... Quite a quandry then. Sounds like it must have been sometime in 2002 then, since the begining of 2002 had a total of 8 Strong Bad Emails. That was right around when the site started regular, without fail, weekly updates, it seems. Thunderbird 23:12, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
The emails were not regular yet. In 2002 I was a junior **cough cough 2nd sophamore year cough cough** so I know it was way before that. When did Yellow Dello come out? Because it was around then. I R F 23:17, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
The original, or the DVD? The DVD was possible Circa March 31st, 2001. See here for why we think this to possibly be the case. Thunderbird 01:00, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
I remember knowing about H*R (not being really a fan then) before I graduated college (pre-2002). And I remember watching guitar sometime around then (before or after? not sure, I might have really old logs I can check). But for a while, I kept thinking I knew about SBE's a while before I graduated. Of course the timelines don't match "mine" so I dunno. --Stux 01:25, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
Did many people even know about DVD's in 2001? I'm thinking it was the original purely because I do also remember seeing the DVD version for the first time and thinking that having all the commentary and such was a novel idea. I R F 17:06, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

My Cousin Vinny

Just curious whether you mean that good, bad, or indifferent, and whether it applies to everybody in general or someone in particular. ;) — It's dot com 17:47, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

Genreal, humurous, non-jaded comment, directed usually at new or non-logged in people. Just a general comment that sometimes something completely fine and correct will be posted, as someone will come along and rv I R F 18:06, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
The reason I ask is that there's this anonny who keeps making lots of changes to several pages. Some of his edits are good, and some are not. Occasionally we'll go through all his changes and keep the ones that should stay and revert the ones that shouldn't, but lately it has been so much trouble that often the whole page gets reverted. That's not a very elegant solution, but he has ignored repeated attempts at communication by several users via his talk page. We have asked him either to stop what he's doing or, at the very least, explain himself, but we are met with silence. *sigh* — It's dot com 18:11, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
Is it a certain annonymous person that also started a topic a few sections above about this? I R F 19:50, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

PNGs

Actually, why are you uploading GIFs? Our image policy states that PNGs should be used if at all possible. The GIF format doesn't even support 24-bit color. — It's dot com 17:47, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Unless you are at computer that has Macromedia Fireworks (a $500 program) or another program that makes PNG's this it is not possible to get a PNG. So you must ask yourself this question: Which is better, to have less content and edits from someone that cannot make a PNG file, or to put up a GIF for now, and have someone replace it later? BTW I am aware of the image policy. I R F 17:54, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
What platform are you on? I know that even the most basic programs on both Windows (Paint) and Mac (Preview) support the PNG format. — It's dot com 18:03, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Sweet mother of mystery! I didn't know Paint had PNG. My apologies. I just always thought of Paint as a dumb program that did BMPs. Plus TBC constatntly rag on it so I never bothered to use it. My other computer has Macromedia Studio and that is what I am used to but I never go to the wiki from that comp. From now on, I'll use PNG. I R F 18:07, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Cool. :) — It's dot com
FYI: From those of us poor enough to have to use Open Source... I do my PNG's using The GIMP Photoshop clone. It has pretty much all the features at (1/∞) times the price :). Some little things here and there are not as easy to do and take a little getting used to, but you certainly can't beat the price! (P.S. I know 1/∞ is undefined, but if you take the limn → ∞(1/n) then we have the desired number ;) ) --Stux 21:57, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Hey do you have the original BMP for this picture? I was about to convert the GIF to PNG but it might be better to take the original BMP and convert that to PNG. --Stux 01:06, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

Already done I R F 13:43, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Pre-Calc 101

(I Split up the conversation as the subject changed) I R F

actually I thought the limn → ∞(1/n)=0

if my calculous memories are correct limn → 0;(1/n) would be undefined. I R F 22:32, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Dude that's awesome! Another fellow math geek! And thanks for the pretty math text :) As for to answer your comments: I thought the limn → ∞(1/n)=0
it is! That's how much the software costs: $0! And I thought about limn → 0;(1/n) would be undefined... actually 1/0 is undefined, but here, the limn → 0;(1/n)=∞, if my memory serves me right.--Stux 22:41, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
I always use practical examples:
limn → ∞(1/n) = 0
1/999999 = .000001 or 0
limn → 0(1/n) = undefined
because 1/0 deviding by zero is undefined. I R F 22:48, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Image:1overn.PNG
limn → 0+ (1/n) = +∞
limn → 0- (1/n) = -∞
limn → 0 (1/n) = undefined I R F 23:13, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
As the graph there shows, as n approaches 0 (from a positive direction), 1/n gets closer to (positive) infinity. The limit, therefore, is infinity. The Wikipedia article states that the expression 1/0 is still technically undefined, because infinity is not a real number, but the limit is defined. — It's dot com 23:28, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Or is that what you were saying? I'm not sure what that third line under the graph is. Is it that if you don't specify a direction then you can't tell whether it should be positive or negative, and therefore undefined? — It's dot com
Cool, group participation. Exactly, the notation above states is that as you approach zero from the right or 0+the limit is +∞ but when you approach 0 from from the left or 0- the limit is -∞. Since you can't discuss both limits at the same time in a meaningful way, when you siimply state limn → 0 (1/n) there is no answer, or undefined. I R F 23:41, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
Hmmmm. I should've known better than that (I did actually study the stuff you know). I have the urge to go back and fix the mistake and pretended it never happened, but Alas... It would make even less sense if I do. So yes, I should've written limn → 0+ (1/n) = +∞. 0+ more specifically means approaching from the positive to that number, and 0- approaching from the negative to that number (we can generalize it to any number). In fact... and this one *should* be correct... limn → a f(n) exists if and only if limn → a+ f(n) = limn → a- f(n) (and of course they both exist). This is exactly what you showed above in the graph. It is a very obvious definition, but it is defined nonetheless. Somewhere; not sure where. The formal definition of the limit says something totally different from what I just mentioned and is actually a different beast using epsilon-delta notation which takes a while to understand. --Stux 00:31, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

About "Black Mountain"

About the Monte Verde revert you just did. I don't think the Monte Verde is a valid reference since there ARE things named Monte Negro. If such things didn't exist I wouldn't have deleted it. (And yes, I knew negro and verde meant "black" and "green" in Spanish--NFITC1

I don't care all that much about that one. I thought that most of those fact were not great. I R F 23:34, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Flag Intro Link

I hope I don't come off sounding rude but, about this edit and its ensuing revert war: That edit is actually better. Just to let you know, the link you kept reverting to is 404'D. The anony was fixing it to a valid link on a mirror that happens to NOT be unknown. I'll remove him/her from the WikiTroll list for you. Keep up the good work, but next time, don't be quick to revert. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 23:54, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

This file? I'm STILL getting 404'd there. Cleared the cache and everything.

When I click on the that link there, I see Old Glory waving and Homestar running, and I hear "Everybody, everybody"... I was going to suggest a hard refresh, but it looks like you've already done that. Strange. — It's dot com 00:06, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
I got to see it too! --Stux 00:13, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
It's always shown up for me too, which is why I've reset it a couple times. --DorianGray
However, it is still strange that so many people are encountering 404's. (As it stands I can't think of a rational explanation for it.) --Stux 00:23, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

11/10/05 !?!

Can a sysop fill me in on what in the world happened on Thursday. It seemed that the whole server is down and now annonymous editing and new registration is gone. What happened? I R F 12:52, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Frankly, IRF, we were hit by the same troll we recently had in bot form. He created several hundreds of usernames, HRWiki:NSMC vandal, and took quite a bit of time to recover from. New user registration and annonymous editing are both disabled to cease further troll activity for the moment. — Lapper (talk) 12:58, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
I've got a couple of questions and if they already been address, then please provide the link, but
  • did the bot cause the server shutdown, or was the shutdown to stop the bot?
  • was there any data lost or were we able to completely recover?
  • what can be done to ensure that we can have both annonymous contributions and new registrations, but not be victim to this again?
I R F 14:48, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
Hi IRF, see: Talk:Main_Page#What_Happened.3F and HRWiki:Da_Basement#Suggestions. Data wasn't lost there were just tons of pages to revert. --Stux 23:04, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Splitting Nicknames

Hey there. I was helping with the nickname-splitting effort on Nicknames, but people are asking on the talk page as to why these are being split. Sounds like the consensus is that we should put them back the way they were. - KieferSkunk 23:05, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

I'd say far from a consensus. It's just 3 people, and although I respect dot com's opinion a lot, it looks terrible right now. I R F 23:29, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

If we're going to put them in categories, then we're grouping the nicknames by the type of toon they come from. We should take the next step in keeping them actually grouped by toon as well. Chronological order makes the most sense therefore. Either way, please at least reply to my comments on the talk page there before taking the trouble to alphabetize them. — It's dot com 23:35, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Timing...I started making changes before you even put the comments there, and then after I spent about 10 minutes working on it I saw what you said and it made sense. You should know by now that I don't just ignore people's comments, and since there is not instant messaging here I didn't know about your post until I finished my edit. I R F 00:30, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
Oh, I never thought you were ignoring anyone. :) But I did want to leave you a message so that, depending on how the discussion went, you wouldn't go to a lot of unnecessary trouble. Just curious, why did you pick reverse chronological order? — It's dot com 00:36, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
I don't think you should use reverse chronological order or chronological order... but rather Reverse Polish notation, it's even better than regular old Polish notation! I need to go home. And sleep. BTW your reorganization is looking good! Looking real nice ere.. reeeal nice! --Stux 00:53, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
Just following the example of Toons menu, Strong Bad Emails, and Fourth Wall Breaks, which all are listed order from most recent to oldest. I R F 12:41, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
And Stux, you need to move that non-sense to another section. We already have a pre-calc section here, that would be Calc 2 *ahh nightmares nightmare* ...must...erase...memories...of...polar...coordinates. J/K Stux but it only took me only 3 tries to pass my second semester of Calculous in college. I just flat out gave up once we got to Diffy Q's. I R F 12:48, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
Good morning! LOL! Actually, RPN and Polish Notation would be more of a computer sciency thing (I even used to have a nifty HP calculator a long time ago, but it got stolen; now I have a TI-85). So hopefully it won't make you shudder as much ;). Ah! Diffy Q's... yes... I think I passed that class... and learned much! I remember almost nothing from it though. At least I know I took it :). --Stux 15:27, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
Still Shudder, I was a computer engineering major a one point. I still enjoy making a simple programs which makes non-computer science people really impressed. My favorite program that I wrote was a programs that encrypted text so that you could email it in coded form to the person that had the unscrambler. One day I hope to find someone in the FBI or CIA and see how long it takes to crack. Its relatively simple but designed to leave little to no pattern to back solve from. I had a TI-85 many moons ago, but I wanted to TI-89 that did diffy q's. I don't do much coding anymore but I can usually look at code and kind know what is going on. I learned mostly in C++. Sorry, I didn't realize that I could do that. I didn't even know that I'd actually done anything involving the removal of my sig. My bad. Sorry. --Homsarroks 23:39, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
