:No.  But I have removed the template while I am moving, so no one will see the stars anymore. --[[User:Fun Facts Avenger|Fun Facts Avenger]] 21:49, 12 Jan 2005 (MST)

Rock, Rock On, Mr. Avenger! May your mouse be responsive and your connection swift. - Dr Haggis - Talk 00:54, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

[edit] I don't get it

I can see categorizing the Fun Facts, but your categorizing seems totally arbitrary (I like this Fun Fact, so it gets a gold star. I don't like this one, so I'm putting it in the "Other things of interest" category.) And why did you give a star to the "fun fact" in part-time job speculating the meaning behind the buttons on Mrs. Bennedetto?! It didn't even belong on the part-time job page in the first place! --Jay 01:19, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

  1. I just checked the "Broaster" part, I don't mind that you removed it
  2. This is a wiki, and we've needed a gold star system for a while. I choose the things I like to give a star, but I don't own the star. Remove it, fine. We need fewer "Fun Facts". Fun Facts Avenger 01:23, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)
I suppose it didn't come off right, but I kinda meant to ask, "Is there any pattern to what does or does not get a star?" --Jay 01:26, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)
Well, I'm using the outline given in the STUFF page, but being a little more restrictive. Basically, I'm interesting in verifying the factuality of certain FFs (what the star's for), and moving boring facts into the "Other things of interest" section. Fun Facts Avenger 01:29, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

Regarding fun facts, we need to err on the side of incompleteness rather than inaccuracy. Meaning it is better to delete questionable facts or notes rather than let them obscure the "choice cuts". I think the STUFF system is bloated and sloppy, and these Gold Stars are a little arbitrary, but I am glad we are moving towards community standards and procedures. - Dr Haggis - Talk 01:31, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

Therein lies the problem. What solution should we take? I have my own ideas about making the pages a bit more readable while still letting people submit iffy Fun Facts - specifically, separating Fun Facts into smaller sub-sections (a little like was done in radio) - but the iffy Facts would still be there. And the separation really ought to be more objective than what is "boring", I'm afraid. --Jay 01:40, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)
Yes, I've been told that before, but unfortunately IMHO something has to be done. I don't have time to record what is "boring" and what isn't, but I hope we can agree that "This is the first time we see Marzipan's purse" is boring. I mean, it's a Wiki. It'll work out, and things will be moved back and forth. Fun Facts Avenger
Well, there's always my idea. If we can't remove all the "boring" Fun Facts, we can at least split them up:
Inside References - References to previous Homestar cartoons
To be continued... - Small things (like the blinking 12:00 VCR clock or somesuch) that get referenced in later cartoons. Yeah, I know I'm the opponent of Forward Referencing, but if you can't beat 'em...
Real-World References - References to things outside of Homestar
Trivia - First appearances, odd quirks in the presentation, etc. If not for the fact that Marzipan's purse has only been seen once (to my knowledge) and thus barely merits the mention even with the division, this would be where that fact would go.
Explanations - Where all the iffy stuff goes, more likely than not. Anything explaning something non-obvious (like WSBD in radio) but isn't a reference.
Inside Jokes and Running Gags - Very much optional, but it's an idea.
Naturally, not all of these would be included for every e-mail. --Jay 01:47, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)
IMO, the vast majority of references people submit are completely subjective, and probably not what TBC intended. An exception would be the Inside Reference you mention, such as in Homestar Presents: Presents, when Strong Sad refers to being locked in the tub the previous year. I would file everything else under "Other things of interest" or some other subheading. Fun Facts Avenger
You say "subjective", I say "BS". Something is a reference or it is not. I admit: very many references that people submit are total BS. That doesn't mean they all are. The BS ones should be STUFF'd (if the page survives) or deleted, but that goes for all Fun Facts no matter what. --Jay 01:53, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

Look, I think that I might be on to something. Maybe. Could you at least give an opinion on my talk page? --Jay 02:09, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

Mr. Avenger, I really like the idea of gold stars. I like that you want to clean up the Fun Facts. So do I. I'm afraid, however, that I have to agree about the fact that your star distribution seems arbitrary. After looking over the fun facts in all of the pages you have listed on your user page, I find myself wondering: is there a reason the fact about the name of the disk in Strong Bad's floppy holder gets a star in cheat talk while the one in unused emails doesn't? This seems rather inconsistent. -Mila

I'm not the owner of the stars. Anyone can add one using the code {{FF}}. I only put star on the interesting things I know to be true. If I'm not positive and don't have time to check, I just leave it for someone else to come along and add a star. Just because it doesn't have a star doesn't mean it shouldn't get one. --24.21.86.243 14:11, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

[edit] Project Request

Mr Avenger, while on your quest through emails, I'm hoping you can help out on a Categorization project. We have created sub-categories for each of the Computer eras of Strong Bad Emails. Emails need to be removed from the parent category:Category:Strong Bad Email if they have been placed into a sub-category. At time of writing, there are about 70 or so emails to go. Thanks! - Dr Haggis - Talk 02:28, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

I'll keep my eyes out --Fun Facts Avenger 02:38, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

[edit] Da Rules

I'll get into your "Avenging" when I have a little more time. But for the time being, I'm just letting you know that subpages are a no-no. I'll wait for you to reply to this, but know that I'm going to delete your userpage's /why page. -- AgentSeethroo 12:51, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

  • Correction. You have THREE subpages. I had to comply with the rules, so you're gonna have to as well. I'm not deleting them right away, so that you can take the text from them and organize it all on your userspace somehow. Hope there are no hard feelings. -- AgentSeethroo 13:07, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)
    • Oh how come? Oh well, que sera. --24.21.86.243 14:12, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)
      • Hey, thanks for complying. When we moved to Mediawiki, I had 10 or so subpages in my userspace, so trust me, I understand. Furthermore, I think we should have a specified team that does the fun facts...I dunno if one has been put together so far, but it's a thought. -- AgentSeethroo 14:20, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)
        • Well I'd like to point out that I'm not deleting anything, and someone can remove all of my gold stars by deleting the template FF. I just think that the situation was getting dire. --24.21.86.243 14:23, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)
          • The problem is that some things NEED to be deleted. I've seen a few of these "Gold Stars" roaming around, and I think that they make things look unprofessional and crowded. There has to be a better method of doing this. This is a wiki, and people should contribute. However, adding crap for the sake of adding gets old, especially when most of the stuff is inane. Check the forum, I'll put up a topic, or find an existing one, and we'll get this straightened out. -- AgentSeethroo 14:30, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)
            • Yeah, I guess people are really going to give it to me for adding stars. Well whatever. Maybe I'll start deleting things as well. 24.21.86.243 14:48, 7 Jan 2005 (MST)

[edit] Fun Facts to be verified

From english paper#Fun Facts: Originally, the cash was scanned pictures of actual money. However, someone didn't think this was a very good idea, and the Chaps scrapped it.

From english paper#Fun Facts: Kyle "The Yellow Dart" Smith reported via another forum that he actually did submit Strong Bad's english paper along with his own real one.

Eh, I'm still not big on the whole "gold star" thing, but I can verify this. It was on the old Homestar Runner Message Bored, IIRC. There's no proof that he really was THE Kyle Smith, but the message did come up. --Jay 00:12, 8 Jan 2005 (MST)

[edit] Examples of Bad Fun Facts (IMHO, of course)

[edit] Examples of Misplaced Fun Facts

Some Fun Facts aren't really bad, they would just be better described as Easter Eggs, or put into the Transcript. Here are some examples:

From radio: The left sleeve of Strong Sad's radio T-shirt disappears during parts of that Easter egg. If you click on him again, it reappears. (See the article image above.)

This was put into the Easter Egg. Easter Eggs are things you can do and find in the cartoon.

From part-time job: In the easter egg, Strong Bad sings two notes at the same time on the word "true."

This was put into the appropriate place in the Transcript.

[edit] Examples of Bad Fun Facts

From animal: "R is for Red steckled elbermung" could possibly be a reference to morning routine where Strong Bad keeps trying to say what the R in routine stands for.

[edit] Examples of Really Bad Fun Facts

From part-time job: The Cheat's top hat with "Tito" on it, bowtie and cane... Combined with the fact that he seems to be humming Irving Berlin's "Puttin' On the Ritz"... Could be a parody of 80's "One Hit Wonder" TACO and his cover of "Puttin' On the Ritz".

From morning routine: The tune playing on the TV set while Strong Bad is waking up is the theme song from "Voyage of the Mimi," an educational TV show from the 1980s featuring Ben Affleck.

From monument: "Shut up, kid" might be a reference to Star Trek when Guinan and Reiker are talking and Wesley says something and Guinan says "Shut up, kid"

Are you high? And if so, are you really really really high? And if so, how can you still operate a keyboard? Fun Facts Avenger

[edit] PG13 Theory

A specter is haunting HRWiki, the specter of 12-year-olds and stoners. These two groups, though charming and cute in real life, can be a real pain in the ass when they watch Homestar Runner. Both seemed to have the uncanny ability to find meaningless connections between the cartoon they just saw and some other pop culture reference. Worse still, they both seem to want to broadcast this to the world in the form of Fun Facts. They don't seem to realize that Matt and Mike Chapman are not 12 years old, and probably not stoners. Matt and Mike Chapman did not create Homestar Runner as a parody, but rather as a silly cartoon like Looney Toons.

Any connections you see between their cartoon and such random references as "Salad Fingers", "Ben-Hur", and "The Waterboy" are completely in your head, and you should keep them to yourself. Further, if you happen to notice a pointless fact such as the first appearance of Marizpan's purse, try to remember that some people wish to use this Wiki for something other than your personal notepad. Before contributing to HRWiki please either grow or sober up.

[edit] Gold stars

Please refrain from littering the wiki with "gold stars" until you've reached a consensus with the Wiki community at large that they should or should not be used. And do us a favor and remove the {{FF}} tags you've already created until such a time as a consensus is reached.
