Welcome!

Hey, Defender1031, welcome to the Homestar Runner Wiki! We can always use new registered users around here, so I'm glad you're on. A word of warning, though: Before you do any major editing, you'll want to read up on our editing standards. And if this is the first MediaWiki based wiki (or first wiki) you've used check out the MediaWiki User's Guide, or for quick reference, our Help:Editing page. If you have any questions that aren't answered on our FAQ, post them on its talk page, or you can ask me directly. Most people here are pretty good about assuming stupidity [read: ignorance] rather than malice One last thing — always sign posts on talk pages with this: ~~~~ (it's an automatic signature and timestamp). — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 06:22, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

DaFender, meet Show Preview. Show Preview, DaFender. Hey, this button allows you to see edits without having to actually save, so Recent Changes doesn't get flooded. Try it, you'll love it. Your money back if not satisfied! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:49, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Not getting the first time

Regarding this edit summary, no, the anonny may not have any idea why his or her edit disappeared, since new users aren't always aware of the list of recent changes and article histories. Incidentally, there is currently an item in STUFF that discusses what to do with links to portmanteaus. It looks like a version with a link to the page (but which does not explain the joke) is going to win out. Talk atcha later. — It's dot com 23:42, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Fine, thanks for the clarification. DeFender1031 00:02, 16 March 2007 (UTC) P.S. I'm having a bit of trouble learning to have patience for anonnies and newbies. I realize this, I apologize, and I will try harder to keep my patience in the future.

Userbox

What's up? Well, I just noticed, your page doesn't have a userbox. I recomend that you might want to have one. It can explain a lot about you. And they're fun too. Just a friendly notice from User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Happy now? DeFender1031 00:40, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey Dude.

Hi there. I tired to add this to the Senor Cardgage page.

Comparisons can be drawn between Senor Cardgage and real life furniture salesman Mark Norton known for his odd ball late night television advertisements. Usually seen between the hours of 1 and 3 A.M. on the Cleveland FOX affiliate which broadcasts into the Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, And South Eastern Ontario regions.

And you seem to have taken it down... I apologize if what I added was in any way problematic, I realize I had used some incorrect punctuation and as such was about to fix that when then I noticed the original edit had been taken down. I mostly wanted to highlight the Indiana connection with the Chaps and the possibility that the commercials might have been an influence on the character since they did reside in Indiana for a time. They (the commercials) are now available on You Tube and this has already been the topic of some speculation. Hope I haven’t inconvenienced you in any way. Cheers. Steve.

I removed it because I felt that such a comparison was TTATOT. DeFender1031 05:54, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Tis true but you might want to check the comercial out before you say that... I Remeber when I first saw one in 2004 it was pretty much the first thing that jumped to mind. Beware what lies within is not for the faint of heart...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqmht0YVcJQ

Hey there, Taproots85, and welcome to the wiki! I can see the similarity between Senor Cardgage and that guy (though I'm not sure it's intended). Actually, somebody started a discussion about this here — that would be a good place to discuss it, and if there's consensus in favor of the fact, it can then be added to the article. Welcome again! Trey56 06:09, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

thanks Trey, love the monicker by the way though I'm more of a Fish man. (no pun intended)

You're the first one I've come across who knows what my name is referring to :) Trey56 06:16, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Sorry about that — I was considering moving some of it, but I couldn't think of how to divide it up so that both parts made sense. Okay, we're done :) Laters, Trey56 06:19, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Da Iron Cup Award!

Hey, Defender1031. I saw you've been making tons of good edits, like creating Showering and Sugar. So, I wanted to award you (drumroll...) THE IRON CUP OF BRUNSWICK STEW.

This award, the first on HRWiki, is given to recognize good contributions and to let people know that their hard work is seen and appreciated. It was given to The Cheat by Strong Bad for his good work on New Boots.

Keep up the awesome work, Defender1031! User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 21:19, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Edit summaries

I'd like to ask you to consider taking a softer tone in your edit summaries. This, for example, is really biting an annonies (you may want to see this 'Kipedia page. Even the latter part of this could be handled better with something like "I don't think we need a link to 'corporation'". Remember, someone went to the trouble of writing that link; saying "What the crap?" doesn't really help, even if it is indeed unnecessary. What you're trying to get across can almost always be expressed with a softer tone and is actually typically more effective in driving it home. Heimstern Läufer 02:07, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

You make a good point. I'll try to be a bit gentler. DeFender1031 02:09, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Vandalism in the sandbox

No such thing, Stu. No such thing. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 05:52, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

I know. It was a joke. DeFender1031 10:33, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
You did it again. Please don't use "rv vandalism" in an edit summary for fun. You can be sure that it will cause at least one sysop to check the reverted edit to see if a warning or a block is in order. It's kinda like crying wolf. Loafing 01:01, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
I apologize. I didn't think of that consequence when i did it. You can be assured it won't happen again. (PS. I think that quick sand pic should be a permanent part of the sandbox.) Sorry for entrangling you, DeFender1031 01:04, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Removing facts

Hey there DeFender, I was wondering which facts' removal you were referring to here — you sounded a little upset in the edit summary. Thanks, Trey56 00:37, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

well, actually... (blushes)... I read the history wrong, and those facts that were moved... I uh, kinda thought they had gotten deleted... and umm... went back to a previous revision and reverted from there, so i didn't actually touch the facts... and umm... sports team? DeFender1031 00:40, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
Okay, no prob — just checking. I guess that's a good reason to keep edit summaries civil :) Thanks, Trey56 00:44, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
Well, i am getting better with the whole edit summaries thing, aren't I? DeFender1031 00:46, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I can't say I've been following them that closely; I just noticed that section on your talk page and thought it seemed timely to link to it just as a friendly reminder. But looking through your last X0 contributions, they look fine. Nevertheless, let me take this opportunity to mention that I appreciate your efforts at reverting poor edits; you do a great job of helping keep the wiki tidy! Trey56 00:51, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Periods inside of quotation marks

Hi Dan, Thanks for your suggestion, but periods (and commas) always go inside of quotation marks. Check out this grammar site: http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/quotes.asp Jonathan Fellow H*R fan

According to THAT standard. Not ours. Ours is more intuative. Btw, thanks for calling me "Dan". It's nice to see that some people care enough to take the time to read a bit about who it is they're talking to. Also, please sign your posts with four tildas "~~~~". it leaves your signature and a link to your page, and lets people know who wrote what. Now get back to that tranglin'! DeFender1031 15:30, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Huh? I'm not sure what you mean by "our" standard (and since I'm a spelling nerd, it's "intuitive"). I also don't get the 4 tilda thing. What does it do?
"Our" standard as in "the Wiki's" standard. The four tildes add your signature and a date to your posts just like this: Loafing 20:15, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Editing another's user page

A user flooding recent changes is certainly annoying, but it's not against any rule. Replacing an entire legitimate user page, on the other hand, is a blockable offense. I realize you had good intentions, but please don't do that. (We could probably also do without the thinly veiled swear on his talk page.) Thanks. — It's dot com 01:37, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Thinly veiled swear? What are you talking about exactly? I don't swear. DeFender1031 01:39, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
I was referring to "for the love of G-d and everything holy". — It's dot com 02:08, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Oh, i don't see that as a swear. I'm sorry if you do and i've offended you. DeFender1031 10:13, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Wow, if god was a swear word, you must hate church! -- CX360 21:44, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
On the contrary, trivially invoking the names of deities is the original meaning of swearing, and it's out of respect for those things that it's discouraged. Trey56 21:49, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Still, CX's post is one of the funniest things i've seen today. DeFender1031 21:50, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

[[Redirect]]s

What's bad about having an s after a link? On Strong Bad Email, you can put an s after it so it will still say Strong Bad Emails without a redirect. Homestar-Winner (talk) 19:51, 13 May 2007 (UTC) (sorry, though, that I did it a second time. I didn't see that you reverted the 1st one)

Actually, I owe YOU an apology. I wasn't aware that the link absorbs the "s" like that. There's nothing wrong with it (as long as you're editing an up to date version of mediawiki.) As for the second time, actually, i reverted both after they were both done. No harm done, dorian sorted it all out, explained to me that it absorbs it and fixed it and all. You did what you were supposed to be doing. For that, I applaud you. DeFender1031 19:55, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Hey!

Before you go around marking pages for speedy don't you think you should contact the creator or wait a sec and check the discussion page? Anyway, it's gone now but.. It's purpose was to mark users as retired as I was just about to do with my old account. Sorry for the trouble. =) Speckledorph 20:34, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Like I said, if they don't go on the wiki anymore, how can they put it on? --Jangles5150 20:40, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
It's unnecessary to have a template for that. Users can mark their old pages as "retired" as they individually wish. ¤ The Dang, Pom Pom, you see that? That's a nice golbol. Talk to me. 20:41, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
For example, you can do what this guy did. --Jangles5150 20:44, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Explanation

I just meant that the Grape Nuts Robot thing was a bit risque for a family-friendly cartoon, but whatever, that probably wasn't such a good thing to say on a family-friendly wiki, either. Hagurumon 01:27, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

I really doubt "kiss my butt" refers to anything so extreme as that. It's just a mildly offensive way to insult a person: somewhere between "Screw you!" and "Eat my shorts!" Heimstern Läufer 01:52, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Ah, now see, I didn't realize that. Oops. :/ Hagurumon 02:23, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
DeFender: I know you were trying to help, and I agree with the decision to remove the comment, but your edit summary was out of line. You used profanity and made a personal attack on another user. Indeed, these are actually blockable offenses. Furthermore, you seem to have a habit of using rude or snappy edit summaries. I urge you to be less impulsive in your actions and think more about your edit summaries before writing them. Heimstern Läufer 01:52, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Heimstern, I don't actually consider that a profanity, but I apologize to those who do. It just bothers me to see such disgusting things and I guess I kind of lost it a bit. I know this isn't the first harsh edit summary I've written, and I apologize, but I hope you can see where I was coming from, especially since that post would have been more appropriate for the forum anyway, (ignoring the content, and just focusing on the idea, of course. That kind of content isn't appropriate anywhere in my opinion.) Please accept my apology, both of you, and please understand that I will try harder to tone it down in the future. Hagurumon, I expect you to use a bit more disgression in the future, so that I won't even need to revert things like that. With that, I think this matter has been solved, so let's all return to our various respective tranglings. DeFender1031 12:35, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
In such instances, I generally revert with a sterile "this is a forum post" summary, or in debatable cases, I reply with something along the lines of "This seems to be forum-type fodder, Why not check out the forum?" The key is sterility. Content of articles can be edited, but the summaries, we're stuck with them. Keep them totally G-rated and fun for all. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 12:52, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Ah, but in this case I don't think it was appropriate even for the forum. Also, we really ARE stuck with the content, at least in the history. DeFender1031 14:55, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

The "Sensitive subject"

I had no Idea it was a sensitive subject - although I can see why. By the way, is this why I am unable to edit the wiki page for a certain game? MJN SEIFER 19:30, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

I would assume so, although i was just paraphrasing for It's Dot Com. He knows much more than I do about this. Also, there's another reason for that not being valid on that page that DorianGray pointed out to me in IRC:
<DorianGray> Yes, but that's not the actual reason. The what's new thing on that main page is old and static, and doesn't change, regardless of other updates. It's an old page. That's why it would still say such.
<DeFender1031> DorianGray, ahh, that's true also... didn't even think of that one :P
Anyway, I think that answers that. — Defender1031*Talk 19:32, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Relax

"Please remove the link from your user page"? I'm sure you meant to phrase that as a suggestion and not a command, right? You seem to be taking a lot of liberties lately, such as marking for speedy deletion without discussion longstanding user pages. I know your intentions are probably good, but your approach is something of the bull-in-a-china-shop variety. I'd like you to please take a step back and recognize that you have no special authority to tell anyone to do anything, and to temper your style some. In other words, relax a bit. Thanks, It's dot com 13:55, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Phlip pointed out to me that red links are only evil in main namespace. I wasn't trying to tell anyone to do anything, merely trying to get something that I thought was a problem corrected without editing his user page myself. Had phlip pointed it out sooner, i would have phrased it very differently. As for the speedy deletion stuff, it was a mistake, and i apologize. (I do believe that i'm also the one who REMOVED those tags once I realized that it was incorrect.) I'm perfectly relaxed, I just haven't yet completely gotten down the feel for what is and is not acceptable practice. I know that I can be a bit hard to deal with sometimes, and I thank you very much for your patience. I don't think that I have any special authority to do anything, quite the contrary. I'm just a well-intentioned user. Nothing more. — Defender1031*Talk 14:17, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Being slow to revert

Hello, DeFender, I think we've talked a bit about being slower to revert edits. In light of the recent edit skirmish I saw you in, I think you need to keep working on this. I would especially urge you to be careful when reverting established users. Our knowledge base runs on the collegiality of its editors, and edit warring destroys that collegiality. So, if you revert an established editor and get re-reverted, you really should take it to the talk page rather than going back to revert again. (Often, this is wise even with newer editors, but it's essential for established users.) I hope you understand where I'm coming from. Heimstern Läufer 21:22, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Of course. After nearly a year, I'm still trying to fully understand wiki etiquette. — Defender1031*Talk 22:36, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

User Page Editing

Hey, saw your edit summary. I'm sure Loafing had no clue whatsoever that you had permitted another user to fix things on your page. In that, his revert was in good faith - in fact, I was about to before I saw he had. The fix was easy enough for you to revert back to. It is indeed! — Defender1031*Talk 04:50, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Yay! Ooh, and now that I'm allowed to Google it, I see it appears on Wikipedia:Dante and his Divine Comedy in popular culture... Trey56

THE UNDERMINER!!! From the Disney/Pixar movie The Incredibles. And if you must know, it's in the last scene besides the credits. But I guess at that point I'm just showing off. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 04:13, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Correct. — Defender1031*Talk 04:14, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Was that from I Robot? Homestar-Winner (talk) 04:25, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

I need more. Who said it? — Defender1031*Talk 04:25, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Susan said it. Homestar-Winner (talk) 04:27, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Correct. — Defender1031*Talk 04:28, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Hey I'm complaining. I got the pirates line the moment you said it to me online, and you know it. You asked the question in response to something I wrote. I also got all your other quotes instantly. Your latest one for example is from that Buzz movie, where Buzz's partner tells him it, the blank part is Zurg. I expect you to correct your list of winner, or at least give me a lifetime achievement award on the subject. -Insane Coder 89.139.31.118 05:14, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

"Gaming the system"

I recently reverted edits saying "please don't game the system". I just wanted to be sure you knew what I meant. If you didn't, good thing I posted; if you already did, I'm the fool, so no harm. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:44, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but i get the gist. You wanna clear it up 100% for me? — Defender1031*Talk 18:45, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
Well, the seed which prompted the comment was this edit which seems to say "well, if what I said isn't ok, then this isn't either". It's editing based on the assumption that your adversery is correct, whether or not they are. Hypothetical editing based on hypothetical standards is a form of "gaming the system" and isn't best form. If you ever feel the need to make an edit to make a point, the edit should be to a talk page explaining your point, not to an article assuming the charge is based in actual fact. I was merely saying that the one before that was more of a stretch than that one and that if the second was over the line, so was the first one. — Defender1031*Talk 18:55, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, so say that, don't act it. See the distinction? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:56, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
yes. sorry. I'll do that in the future. — Defender1031*Talk 18:58, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm sure we've all been guilty of it. I just wanted to be sure you were aware. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 19:00, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
I am now. — Defender1031*Talk 19:01, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

concert Shaun of the Dead reference

I added it because the way the shard gets stuck in Strong Sad's head is identical to one of the records thrown in the movie. Noclip 16:26, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

First of all, this discussion should be on the concert talk page, not here. Secondly I think it's a stretch, but bring it up there and see what the community thinks. — Defender1031*Talk 16:39, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Hey

Whoa, great service. Like 30 seconds on the wiki and I've already got a post on my talk page. Thanks for the welcome. I've been visiting homestarrunner.com and the wiki for years, but I've never bothered to make an account. Then, after 'concert', I realized that 'sloshy' was too good a user name to pass up. see ya later on the wiki!
