Hey, '''{{PAGENAME}}''', welcome to the Homestar Runner Wiki! We can always use new registered users around here, so I'm glad you're on. A word of warning, though: Before you do any major editing, you'll want to read up on [[HRWiki:Standards|our editing standards]]. And if this is the first [[Wikipedia:MediaWiki|MediaWiki]] based wiki (or first wiki) you've used check out [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Index the MediaWiki User's Guide], or for quick reference, our [[Help:Editing]] page. If you have any questions that aren't answered on [[HRWiki:FAQ|our FAQ]], post them on [[HRWiki talk:FAQ|its talk page]], or you can [[User talk:ACupOfCoffee|ask me directly]]. Most people here are pretty good about [[Meatball:AssumeStupidityNotMalice|assuming stupidity [read: ignorance] rather than malice]] One last thing — always sign posts on talk pages with this: <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki> (it's an automatic signature and timestamp).

At least one member of TBC ''did'' cover Daniel Johnston's song "Some Things Last a Long Time" under the name Mark Margarine (see http://www.thoraxcorp.com/mp3s/Mark%20Margarine/Covers%20Annex/, though they attribute it to Built to Spill instead), but you're probably right that it's too much of a stretch. --[[User:JohnnyLurg|JohnnyLurg]] 21:03, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

:I searched the wiki for other references before reverting. It still seems too much of a stretch, unless they say so in a commentary or something. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 21:10, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

I'm gonna throw an idea out here.
+
*I think I've mentioned it before but HR says a lot of unusual similes. Like "Fresh as a bagel", "Pure as a mountain goat" and "like falling of a web van". I'll try to think of more, but it seems to be a unique part of his vernacular style.
+
You'd probably remember examples I forgot. I was wondering if you thought this was notable and/or pageworthy. {{User:Broncotroll/sig}} 06:05, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
+
:Interesting idea. I'll try to come up with some more. "two breads in a biscuit" is a good one. And "smack it like a newborn's biscuit". There's probably more. I'm surprised we don't have a page on it, it's a pretty clear running joke. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 06:11, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
+
:: Awesome. I'll go do some "research". I love how we can call watching cartoons "research". {{User:Broncotroll/sig}} 06:13, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
+
::: Heh. Research. I often wonder why I bother. Then I remember how much fun it is. Anyway, it's much easier to create a page for something like [[Confetti]] or [[Grapes]], because you can just search the wiki for all occurrences of the term. These jokes which follow a similar pattern are much harder to find and much harder to ensure completeness for, and require, as you say, research. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 06:16, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
+
:::: I'll do confetti. {{User:Broncotroll/sig}} 06:19, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
+
:::::Oh, the point wasn't "do confetti, don't bother with the hard ones", it was just an observation about different kinds of pages. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 06:20, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Regarding {{p|l=http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=unnatural&curid=31706&diff=429739&oldid=429737 this edit summary}}, no, the anonny may not have any idea why his or her edit disappeared, since new users aren't always aware of the list of recent changes and article histories. Incidentally, there is currently an item in [[HRWiki:STUFF|STUFF]] that discusses what to do with links to portmanteaus. It looks like a version with a link to the page (but which does not explain the joke) is going to win out. Talk atcha later. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 23:42, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi there.
+
Why did you undo my edit? I watch Homestar cartoons without sound all the time, and there are instances where the "hide text and then display text for some reason" effect actually causes me to miss a word or phrase. In almost all cases, it's completely unnecessary and just looks tacky. {{User:MichaelXX2/sig}} 20:34, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
-
I tired to add this to the Senor Cardgage page.
+
:Those are there for a reason, namely to simultaneously not spoil the joke until the point where the punchline is said, and also show the punchline on the screen in the context of the full sentence. I see no reason to remove them, and it was not appropriate for you to unilaterally decide to do so without discussing it first. I'm also unsure why this conversation is going on on my talk page rather than somewhere more relevant (like on the subtitles page for that toon, or on the project page for subtitles as a whole). {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 21:01, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Comparisons can be drawn between Senor Cardgage and real life furniture salesman Mark Norton known for his odd ball late night television advertisements. Usually seen between the hours of 1 and 3 A.M. on the Cleveland FOX affiliate which broadcasts into the Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, And South Eastern Ontario regions.

I apologize if what I added was in any way problematic, I realize I had used some incorrect punctuation and as such was about to fix that when then I noticed the original edit had been taken down. I mostly wanted to highlight the Indiana connection with the Chaps and the possibility that the commercials might have been an influence on the character since they did reside in Indiana for a time. They (the commercials) are now available on You Tube and this has already been the topic of some speculation.

The kitkorp mirror saved swfs up to a certain point and the Internet Archive Wayback Machine probably has most of them saved too. :Thanks. I wrote a script a long time ago that generates the html necessary to display a gradient (that's the technical term for what you call "shady"). I'd like to ask you to consider taking a softer tone in your edit summaries. [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=Halloween_Potion-ma-jig&diff=prev&oldid=443317 This], for example, is really biting an annonies (you may want to see [[Wikipedia:WP:BITE|this 'Kipedia page]]. Even the latter part of [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=from_work&diff=prev&oldid=443467 this] could be handled better with something like "I don't think we need a link to 'corporation'". Remember, someone went to the trouble of writing that link; saying "What the crap?" doesn't really help, even if it is indeed unnecessary. What you're trying to get across can almost always be expressed with a softer tone and is actually typically more effective in driving it home. {{User:Heimstern Läufer/sig}} 02:07, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello Defender1031, I see that you have made several consecutive edits to the same page. I want to point out the Show Preview button. It's right next to the Save Page button when you edit. "Please remove the link from your user page"? I'm sure you meant to phrase that as a suggestion and not a command, right? You seem to be taking a lot of liberties lately, such as marking for speedy deletion without discussion longstanding user pages. I know your intentions are probably good, but your approach is something of the bull-in-a-china-shop variety. I'd like you to please take a step back and recognize that you have no special authority to ''tell'' anyone to do anything, and to temper your style some. In other words, relax a bit. Thanks, [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 13:55, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

:Phlip pointed out to me that red links are only evil in main namespace. I wasn't trying to tell anyone to do anything, merely trying to get something that I thought was a problem corrected without editing his user page myself. Had phlip pointed it out sooner, i would have phrased it very differently. As for the speedy deletion stuff, it was a mistake, and i apologize. (I do believe that i'm also the one who REMOVED those tags once I realized that it was incorrect.) I'm perfectly relaxed, I just haven't yet completely gotten down the feel for what is and is not acceptable practice. I know that I can be a bit hard to deal with sometimes, and I thank you very much for your patience. I don't think that I have any special authority to do anything, quite the contrary. I'm just a well-intentioned user. Nothing more. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 14:17, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

== Being slow to revert ==
+

Hello, DeFender, I think we've talked a bit about being slower to revert edits. In light of the recent edit skirmish I saw you in, I think you need to keep working on this. I would especially urge you to be careful when reverting established users. Our knowledge base runs on the collegiality of its editors, and edit warring destroys that collegiality. So, if you revert an established editor and get re-reverted, you really should take it to the talk page rather than going back to revert again. (Often, this is wise even with newer editors, but it's essential for established users.) I hope you understand where I'm coming from. {{User:Heimstern Läufer/sig}} 21:22, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

I recently reverted edits saying "please don't [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Gaming the system|game the system]]". I just wanted to be sure you knew what I meant. If you didn't, good thing I posted; if you already did, I'm the fool, so no harm. {{User:Qermaq/sig}} 18:44, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

::Well, the seed which prompted the comment was [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=Quality_Time&curid=36681&diff=488312&oldid=488311&rcid=444060 this edit] which seems to say "well, if what I said isn't ok, then this isn't either". It's editing based on the assumption that your adversery is correct, whether or not they are. Hypothetical editing based on hypothetical standards is a form of "gaming the system" and isn't best form. If you ever feel the need to make an edit to [[Wikipedia:WP:POINT|make a point]], the edit should be to a talk page explaining your point, not to an article assuming the charge is based in actual fact. {{User:Qermaq/sig}} 18:53, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome. I've been visiting homestarrunner.com and the wiki for years, but I've never bothered to make an account. Then, after 'concert', I realized that 'sloshy' was too good a user name to pass up. see ya later on the wiki!

[edit] Nebulon

At least one member of TBC did cover Daniel Johnston's song "Some Things Last a Long Time" under the name Mark Margarine (see http://www.thoraxcorp.com/mp3s/Mark%20Margarine/Covers%20Annex/, though they attribute it to Built to Spill instead), but you're probably right that it's too much of a stretch. --JohnnyLurg 21:03, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

I searched the wiki for other references before reverting. It still seems too much of a stretch, unless they say so in a commentary or something. — Defender1031*Talk 21:10, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

[edit] Ideas

I'm gonna throw an idea out here.

 • I think I've mentioned it before but HR says a lot of unusual similes. Like "Fresh as a bagel", "Pure as a mountain goat" and "like falling of a web van". I'll try to think of more, but it seems to be a unique part of his vernacular style.

You'd probably remember examples I forgot. I was wondering if you thought this was notable and/or pageworthy. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 06:05, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Interesting idea. I'll try to come up with some more. "two breads in a biscuit" is a good one. And "smack it like a newborn's biscuit". There's probably more. I'm surprised we don't have a page on it, it's a pretty clear running joke. — Defender1031*Talk 06:11, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
Awesome. I'll go do some "research". I love how we can call watching cartoons "research". --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 06:13, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
Heh. Research. I often wonder why I bother. Then I remember how much fun it is. Anyway, it's much easier to create a page for something like Confetti or Grapes, because you can just search the wiki for all occurrences of the term. These jokes which follow a similar pattern are much harder to find and much harder to ensure completeness for, and require, as you say, research. — Defender1031*Talk 06:16, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
I'll do confetti. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 06:19, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
Oh, the point wasn't "do confetti, don't bother with the hard ones", it was just an observation about different kinds of pages. — Defender1031*Talk 06:20, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
I mean I'll do confetti right now, since it will be quicker. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 06:30, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

[edit] Clean Ups

Sorry you and CatJaz have to clean up my TBD summer cleaning. I felt like the list needed to be trimmed but I guess I neglected some templates. Hopefully my "executive judgement" for merge/deletion consensus was mostly accurate. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 04:43, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

Also, you should really archive your talk page. It's kind of annoying to scroll all the way down. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 04:50, 16 August 2015 (UTC)
Looks like DeFender used to archive his talk pages annually. But, it seems he got bored of that idea seven years ago. - Catjaz63 04:53, 16 August 2015 (UTC)
It's 99 kilobytes long. That's a lot of bytes. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 04:57, 16 August 2015 (UTC)
I'll do it as soon as I catch up with all your edits... If I ever can catch up. — Defender1031*Talk 04:58, 16 August 2015 (UTC)
Sorry! I'll be more careful next time. Hopefully now we actually discuss these articles for discussion... --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 05:00, 16 August 2015 (UTC)
Sorry for what? Careful about what? I rarely know what you're talking about, Coach Z. — Defender1031*Talk 05:02, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

[edit] WTC

With regards to my "what the heck" edit, I reverted it because I figured a non-cropped image including the text we wanted was better than the alternative. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 20:06, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Ah. Didn't realize the anonny was you, and didn't realize why t image summary was being changed. Now it makes sense! — Defender1031*Talk 20:24, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
Why did you revert the image back? No text was being removed or obscured and there are no fragments of the border. - Catjaz63 20:37, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
Just realised that I didn't capture it with VCR-Have. WHOOPS - Catjaz63 20:40, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Broncotroll - Didn't it make you write a CAPTCHA? That's a sure sign you're not logged in. The Knights Who Say Ni 05:11, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

[edit] Your revision of the Record Store Day subtitles

Why did you undo my edit? I watch Homestar cartoons without sound all the time, and there are instances where the "hide text and then display text for some reason" effect actually causes me to miss a word or phrase. In almost all cases, it's completely unnecessary and just looks tacky. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 20:34, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Those are there for a reason, namely to simultaneously not spoil the joke until the point where the punchline is said, and also show the punchline on the screen in the context of the full sentence. I see no reason to remove them, and it was not appropriate for you to unilaterally decide to do so without discussing it first. I'm also unsure why this conversation is going on on my talk page rather than somewhere more relevant (like on the subtitles page for that toon, or on the project page for subtitles as a whole). — Defender1031*Talk 21:01, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

[edit] Thank You

[edit] Hello!

Hi defender! Sorry I'm a bit out of practice here as you can see. I sort of drifted into the big pedia. I hope you are staying safe and happy! --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 18:32, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

[edit] Why DON'T we do that?

Are you saying that my transcript edits are too much? How can they? I'm just adding things that weren't described before.
If we all of a sudden lose this video from the website or the Internet, who else will people rely on?
There are still a lot of things to edit on this website, and I don't see how they will be edited if we don't talk this out. Eh?
- XY

Some of the descriptions were fine, but most were poorly worded, excessive, or over the top. Also the links to the images were unnecessary, which is the main thing I was referring to by "we don't do that". — Defender1031*Talk 17:25, 6 March 2016 (UTC)
Re: losing the video: It's possible there's someone that saves all the swfs. The kitkorp mirror saved swfs up to a certain point and the Internet Archive Wayback Machine probably has most of them saved too. Not fully sure how A Jumping Jack Contest, Marshmallow's Last Stand and other removed sections of the site got mirrored but it could likely have been from one of those. DEI DAT VMdatvm center\super contra 21:14, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

It might be the time we change how we edit articles as a whole. This change may not seem comfortable,
but it is for the better. I'll see how it goes and we'll debate about it then. I'll try editing
Some Kinda Robot and see how that goes. I may not do it today, since March 7th, after all, it is my birthday.

Here we go!
XY 71.122.225.64 6:22 PM, March 7th, 2016 (EST)

Or, you could try, you know, being a team player and learning how this community functions rather than going against the grain and trying to change how we do things in a way which "may not seem comfortable". — Defender1031*Talk 23:50, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

[edit] Nice sig

You sig looks pretty cool and colorful. How did you do it (make it shady, I don't mean Bubs' shadiness), may I ask?

Thanks. I wrote a script a long time ago that generates the html necessary to display a gradient (that's the technical term for what you call "shady"). Basically, it's just each letter being a slighty different color than the previous one and shifting gradually (get it? GRADual, GRADient?) from one color to another. — Defender1031*Talk 22:23, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

[edit] Using Show Preview

Hello Defender1031, I see that you have made several consecutive edits to the same page. I want to point out the Show Preview button. It's right next to the Save Page button when you edit. You should use it whenever you are making a lot of experimental edits, for example when you are trying to get formatting right. Using the Show Preview button is quicker and easier than saving and clicking "edit" again, and will keep recent changes and page histories from being flooded. Thanks, — Defender1031*Talk 15:35, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
