Animated Images

Hi there Cup 'O Coffee. Since you've sort of spearheaded the image organization, I figured I'd bring this question up with you. I've noticed images like this, this and this are marked with the screenshot template. However they seem to me to be more "animations" than "screenshots". Is there another template that could be made that would clarify under what grounds we reproduce the animation, or does it even fall under "fair use"? Thanks, ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 18:40, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

According to Wikipedia:Screenshot, screenshots aren't necessarily stills, thought they almost always are. However, while looking this up, I found out that we should have been using {{video-screenshot}}for the entire screen of a toon and {{Character-artwork}} for images like the ones on character evolution pages. I've asked for some clarification on this just to make sure that if I go on another image tagging spree, we won't wind up having to revert most of it. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 22:08, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Wait, so you are saying pretty much all of the images tagged with {{web-screenshot}} should be changed to {{video-screenshot}}? How come Wikipedia's Template:Video-screenshot defaults to a category called "Screenshots of movies and television"? I see your question and the answer on Template talk:Video-screenshot, but who is this User:Cohesion fellow? Is he like one of Wikipedia's equivilant to our wiki's you? And if the intent of their Template:Video-screenshot was for screenshots of toons like Homestar Runner, why is the cat for it "Screenshots of movies and television"? Taggin'?

The GNU head image has copyright info on it, and I think it would be useless to create a template for the Free Art License when its forseeable usage is just that image. The rest are going to need source information before we really know what thier status is. In the future you can always use {{no license}} to put them in the "unknown copyright status" category. Understandable, would you be able to think of an applicable category to put the GNU image in then, without a template? As for the three personal image images, Dot com made them himself, and he's tagging them now with a copywrite [sic] templates. ⇔Thunderbird⇔ 01:31, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Maybe a new one called "Free images"? Then Category:Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 images, Category:GFDL images, and Category:LGPL images would be subcategories of that one. Image optimization

Hey, ACupOfCoffee. I noticed that you optimized Image:Let her rip.png and Image:Single-button remote control.png for the web. For my own future reference when uploading images, what does it take to make an image optimal for the web? Thanks! Trey56 04:32, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

I mostly used the phrase "optimized for web" to vary the edit summary. I was really just re-encoding it as to produce the smallest file size possible. Weeklies?

The weeklies (fanstuff, QoTW, and sketchbook) used to be in the rotating "what's new" list. Some of the main page screenshots don't have the new separate button format, and none of them have the random button, so I'm taking new screenshots. As a plus, some of them come out with a smaller file size (presumably because The GIMP's png compression is easier for pngcrush to optimize than MS Paint's is). BTW, were you quoting Denzel Washington in Philadelphia, or is that just a coincidence. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 01:32, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Oh - the empty sections are in the alphabetized lists so if someone, say, clicks the N in the TOC they'll have a place to go. Otherwise, the link in the TOC would not work and the page would seem broken. (The other option is to remove it from the TOC as well, but that doesn't look right.) Re: "some of them come out with a smaller file size" - the wiki doesn't use pngcrush on uploaded images, they're just stored as-is. And MSPaint's PNG compression is indeed abysmal... in some cases I've seen it around half the size of an uncompressed BMP... just opening it and saving it in The GIMP is often enough to shrink it, let alone pngcrush. --phlip ^T_C 17:10, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Creative Commons version update

Hi there ACupOfCoffee. Just so you know, the option to release a Creative Commons licensed work under a later version of the license lies with the individual or entity exercising rights under the license, not the person who originally licensed it. The wording of any version of the license explicitly mentions that, so it's really released under version "2.0 or later". If the original author wanted to release it under 2.5, I'd imagine they'd have to release it under both, something like "released under license version 2.0, version 2.5, and all future versions" (but again, I don't think it really matters, since the "all future versions" part (and even the "version 2.5" part, since that is a later version of 2.0) is stated in the license itself, but some people like to put it out there).

Fonts

Noticed your question on fonts. I don't even know what Kristen is offhand, I need to look it up. Times New Roman is used on nearly every computer produced in the US, I believe, and Arial is a close second (though Apple users often prefer the similar but perhaps better Helvetica). You could do a simple poll, though. Like this.

1. Does this look like a monospaced font? - if NO, then they don't have a monospace font, so following answers might not be helpful.
2. Do these words look like a different font? (tests for Arial)
3. Do these words look like a different font? (tests for TNR)
4. Do these words look like a different font? (tests for Kristen ITC)

Same here. A poll on Arial and Times New Roman does not make sense, though. Should these fonts not be available, then modern browsers will automatically choose an appropriate substite, for example Helvetica and Times. The above samples will still appear different from each other (i.e. with and without serifs). Each system should also have at least one monospaced font installed. Courier, for example. The real question here is whether people will see the weirdness of the Kristen font. Loafing 11:11, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Actually, that's not entirely true. To have that work, you need to set a font-family value as "Times New Roman", serif; or Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;. What actually happens in the absence of any font is the browser chooses the next font in the style declaration (and if you end in a generic name like serif, it chooses its default serif font - which in a misprogrammed browser might not even be a serif font!), or the style of the parent element, or the browser's default font for display of that element. If you declare (for everyday text) font-family: Arial; then if Arial is not installed the font chosen will be whatever the browser's designed to use, which is often a serif font.
