To inspire kids to learn geography, the creators wanted a female "heroine" (a criminal genius/thief) whose name sounded exotic but was unmistakably simple to pronounce. The name "Carmen Sandiego" is somewhat of a play on Indiana Jones. The first software game, "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?," was released in 1985. It was also made into several PBS game shows for kids, including Where in the World... and Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, and a cartoon titled Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?. It starred William Katt as Ralph Hinkley, Robert Culp as Bill Maxwell, and Connie Selleca as Pam Davidson. In it, a man encounters aliens who give him a bright red suit, which gives him super powers. The show's theme song, "Believe it or Not", was a great hit on American radio and reached #2 on Billboard's Top 40 in 1981; Homestar's parody here follows the tune for the opening lines "Believe it or not, I'm walking on air/I never thought I could feel so free".
