:It's usually used so that floated images don't intrude on headers, if they're too close together and would otherwise look bad... especially floated-left images. Look at [[Marshmallow's Last Stand (place)]] for instance – if the Appearances section was next to the image on the left it would look ugly... some of the bullet points would be shifted across, but the ones after the image would go back to the left margin... just generally bad. Hence this template. {{User:Phlip/sig}} 15:39, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Out of interest, were there instances where using
instead of

created awkward space? Since this change, navigation templates don't appear to be visually "separated" from the rest of the page as they were before (all of the navigation templates have {{t|clear}} as their first line). {{User:Soiled Bargains/sig}} 20:47, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

What exactly does this do? — seriously talk 15:13, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

If there's something floating to one side of the text, then this template forces whatever follows it to be moved to underneath that floated object. For example:
Image floated left

Text before the "clear".

Text after the "clear".

It's usually used so that floated images don't intrude on headers, if they're too close together and would otherwise look bad... especially floated-left images. Look at Marshmallow's Last Stand (place) for instance – if the Appearances section was next to the image on the left it would look ugly... some of the bullet points would be shifted across, but the ones after the image would go back to the left margin... just generally bad. Hence this template. --phlip TC 15:39, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
