The Film template was modified to allow you to type, for example, <nowiki>{{Film|Dangeresque}}</nowiki> and have it link to [[Dangeresque (character)|the correct place]] instead of [[Dangeresque|a disambiguation page]]. Gfd reverted this change because some behind-the-scenes stuff was putting extra entries on [[Special:WantedPages]] and because of [[Homestar Runner (character)|some redirects]]. Redirects aren't any big deal if you ask me, so long as they redirect to the right place, and while the Wanted Pages thing is absolutely a bug if you ask me, how many people even use it? The Film template is currently designed the way it is so that you can use it to put characters in the Cast with it even if they don't have Filmography categories, so that we don't have to edit every single toon the character appears in should we decide to add a Filmography page later. (And yes, <nowiki>{{Film|Dangeresque}}</nowiki> '''is used on current pages right now''' (well, at least one that I know of).) Anyone have anything to weigh in? --{{User:Jay/sig}} 20:19, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Why do we need this? It actually takes a longer time to type this in than [[Bubs]]. And if we do keep this, it should link to the character's article, not his/her filmography. Filmography links are at the bottom, and some characters don't have filmography categories. --Gafaddict 01:47, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Actually, it links to the character's page AND his/her filmography. I don't know if it's necessary but I'm willing to let it sit for now. --Jay (Talk) 01:52, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Bingo Jay, this replaces having to add the categories at the bottom. In fact, this links to both the article for the character in the cast list and adds the category at the bottom of the page. If you look at articles where this is used, you can see that the categories are no longer really at the bottom of the edit box, since this template adds them automatically. As for characters without filmography cats, they simply wouldn't need this template, as a simple link would do. -- Tom 01:56, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
As long as we don't see filmographies for every single minor character and object cluttering up the bottom of the page, this template is an ok idea. - Dr Haggis - Talk 02:07, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I agree, minor character filmographies should stick to their character pages, my idea behind the template was to remove the duplication with having the Cast List at the top, and the same list at the bottom in Filmography categories. -- thejesterx 10:11, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

A proposed change: replace [[{{{1}}}]] with [[{{{2|{{{1}}}}}}]] so that an alternate name can be displayed in the link text. --Quietust 15:17, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

You mean [[{{{1}}}|{{{2|{{{1}}}}}}]]. Aside from the one Trogdor instance, where would this be useful? — It's dot com 18:20, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Right, that's what I meant. As for usefulness, is future flexibility not a sufficient reason? --Quietust 03:14, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
I wasn't talking about future flexibility; I was talking about where it would be useful in another existing case. Is there one? — It's dot com 03:20, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Space: The Final Front-of-the-template

So there's a weird bug wherein the template naturally puts a space in before its link. Normally, this doesn't show up, because there's not usually a character directly in front of the template. However, there are certain places where a character does appear, causing this extra space. Removing the space from the template, however, causes a different problem, namely removing the spaces between any use of the template (i.e. it comes out like Strong Bad,Bubs,etc.). I dunno why it does that or how to fix it, so I'm just gonna file it here as a bug report. --DorianGray 20:32, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

I fixed it by just reversing the order of the name and the filmography link. I'm guessing the Wiki software automatically removes spaces before the name of valid category links - but Marxie doesn't have one, causing that space to persist when I reversed them but left the space in. I'm still a little iffy on what will happen should you put a space after the "film" template, but to my knowledge that doesn't happen anywhere on this Wiki. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 23:57, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
