I thought that Strong Bad used the word "maxymonic" as an explaination of jumbo/LARGE because it jumbo shrimp, if not correct, is one of the most commonly known oxymorons out there.  And, obviously, as jumbo/LARGE is not an oxymoron, Strong Bad meant it as the opposite of an oxymoron.  69.162.18.37

What are we trying to figure out here? It's established in the current fun fact that "maxymoron is a play on the word oxymoron." Yes, I agree with that, but I'm trying to play catch-up here. Are people disagreeing over the possibility that maxymoron is meant to be the opposite of an oxymoron? —BazookaJoe 05:20, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

:The discussion is simply this -- several of us believe "Jumbo Large" is specifically a play on the supposed oxymoron "Jumbo Shrimp".  Those of us in favor of it know plenty of people who use "jumbo shrimp" as an oxymoron, whether it technically is or not (do a Google search on "Jumbo Shrimp" +oxymoron, and you'll see that plenty of people not on this Wiki agree that it is an oxymoron.)  The fact that it's a "running joke" may also give credence to this idea.
 +
::Okay. Well, my thoughts are this. I take it that the running joke here is Prawns. That's taking it a step too far (jumbo/LARGE → jumbo shrimp → shrimp/prawn), especially with the considerable uncertainty that connects the steps. With the suggested running gag set aside for a moment, I would like to say that even though jumbo shrimp is not a true oxymoron, it is perceived by many as a common and humorous example. The way Strong Bad uses the term maxymoron suggests that it is the opposite of oxymoron. It is possible that the "oxymoron" jumbo shrimp was embedded in TBC's thought process as it gave rise to the "maxymoron" jumbo large, but it can't be the only possible explanation. I have only one problem with the current wording of the fun fact "Maxymoron is a play on the word oxymoron, although jumbo/LARGE is not actually an oxymoron." Referring to the second part of that fact, well, of course jumbo/LARGE isn't actually an oxymoron. It's not supposed to be; it's supposed to be a maxymoron (or, the opposite of an oxymoron). What in the world is that wording tring to convince us of? I am confused. It needs to be rephrased. —BazookaJoe 15:53, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
 +
:::Well, maybe the fact should be this: "Maxymoron is a play on the word oxymoron and jumbo/LARGE is a play on the joke oxymoron Jumbo Shrimp." Arguing on the oxymoron-ness of "Jumbo Shrimp" is getting us ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE. Are we at least clear on that? -Brightstar 19:57, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
 +
::::Sure, by now it should be clear that "jumbo shrimp" is not an oxymoron. But I also believe that it should be clear by now that we can't draw an obvious connection between jumbo/Large and jumbo shrimp. That "fact" is pure speculation, and it's simply not up to standard. 20:11, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
 +
:::::Nevertheless, Jumbo Shrimp is a perceived oxymoron to the general public. jumbo/LARGE is not even close to being an oxymoron; it it incredibly redundant, not contradictory. Some of us find it more likely that maxymoron is being used to mean the opposite of an oxymoron, compared to a random, made-up mutilation of the word oxymoron. I think that TBC and thus, Strong Bad are smart enough to know that j-Large is not an oxymoron. I've added something to the fact to accommodate both viewpoints, without drawing a connection to jumbo shrimp. —BazookaJoe 13:33, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

I'd say that it must be pretty well known then. Anybody else thinks the Jamming tune is a reference? King Klear 20:57, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] The car

Would it be too much of a stretch to infer that the Gremlin (mentioned in this toon to be Bubs's car) is the car that The Cheat won from Bubs in the Easter egg in pop-up? It's kinda speculatory, but it's possible it's a reference, it all fits together... --phlip TC 06:50, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Not main page material, but it's an interesting thought. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 06:55, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
(Edit Conflict) No, it's not too much of a stretch. The Cheat wins the car for Strong Bad ("Now get back in there and win me a car!"), and both SB and TC treat the car as SB's in this email. It was also only 10 emails away. Loafing 06:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
What about Strong Bad already being seen in the car in dangeresque 3? --DorianGray
Dangeresque 3 was years before The Cheat won the car. They could have just borrowed it from Bubs back then (which is what they could have done now as well, of course). Loafing 07:44, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Then how did he get out of it when he had finished that scene if the doors and windows are broken? 210.54.74.240 07:52 PM, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
The cameraman, or The Cheat, or someone could have opened it for him, perhaps? --phlip TC 08:00, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
It's entirely possible that the doors and windows weren't busted back then.
If it is, what happened to the key that Bubs gave The Cheat when he won the car, I wonder?--H-ko 18:26, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
And if The Cheat was the one who won the car, Bubs would have told him about the doors and windows, not Strong Bad.68.239.233.57 12:56, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
The Cheat won the car for Strong Bad, so he would be the one looking after the keys. And The Cheat never said he didn't know about the broken windows and doors. Loafing 02:29, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
Strong Bad says he doesn't have any keys in a manner that implies he doesn't know anything about them (rather than having forgotten or lost them), so presumably The Cheat never gave the key to him.--H-ko 05:13, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Something I noticed about the car: it's a hatchback, but Strong Bad and The Cheat never tried opening the hatch, either. Perhaps the hatch is also broken, and encompassed by the "doors" statement? --Lukeonia1 05:24, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Honk 'em if ya got 'em or smoke 'em if ya got 'em?

I remember a cigarette company whose motto was "Smoke 'em if ya got 'em". Possibly a real-world reference? Steve Talk Contributions 11:19, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

It's also a song by Parkway Drive, apparently. We'll see if it gets stuff'd. — Lapper (talk) 12:19, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
More likely just a cross between the saying "Flaunt 'em (it) if you got 'em (it)" and the various "Honk if..." bumper stickers. Octan 20:37, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
Smoke 'em if you got 'em is a very famous quote. I'm sure i remember hearing it on Saturday morning cartoons like Bugs Bunny — JamesDean (Talk | contribs) 01:07, 7 September 2006 (left unsigned)

I'm with Octan on this one. We have no evidence that it's more likely a reference to the "Smoke" motto over the "Flaunt" one. In my opinion, it should obviously be removed. Loafing 01:02, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Forwards Compatible

Yet another of Strong Bad's lack of knowledge of modern technology. Loved that part, and the part about the "other world, with another The Cheat and Strong Bad...stuck in a Gremlin". Best part of the whole toon. Retromaniac 17:04, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't think Strong Bad actually knew that forward compatible was a real term--I think he was skewing backwards compatible. Before reading this page, I assumed he had made it up. However, this conflicts with the idea that Strong Bad is technologically impaired, as backwards-compatible electronics have really only become an issue with new generations of gaming consoles. Perhaps TBC were living vicariously through him? --Dragoon5464 05:37, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

When I first watched the email, I already knew that the term was real. I also believe that TBC thought it wasn't. It sounds as if SB is just making it up. But that's really pure speculation, and we've got no reason to include that in the article.  Loafing 07:59, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
I think that Strong Bad knew the term was real, and I think he knew that the 8-track player wouldn't play a CD-R. --Jecowa 21:59, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] How long's it been?

I think this is the first time in a while that Strong Bad has ended his e-mail with an "Until next time" comment. Is anyone not-lazy enough to check out when the last time was that he did that? --ComputerBox 22:27, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

It's been about 4 years. See also Until Next Time.... The first thing I thought of when I heard that was the wiki page. I doubt that's why he said it though. —Zelinda 22:46, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Transposition of Bubs & Coach Z

Is this the second time that the distinction between Bubs and Coach Z has been blurred by Strong Bad? (1st time being the Coach B/Zubs project from current status) Have there been other times this has happened? Has the line ever been fuzzy for other characters too? Is this just a reference to the Coach B/Zubs Project or an emerging inside joke?

I don't think the two are related at all - Coach Z and Bubs are simply best friends and hang out together a lot, and perhaps that's where SB's little joke came from. I think it's only coincidentally similar to Coach B/Zubs. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 01:42, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
current status was not Strong Bad confusing the two, it was him actually switching the pair's heads, which would require him to not be confusing them, clearly. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:10, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Well you'll note that neither the first nor second post claimed that SB was "confusing" them. The original post just said that SB was blurring the distinction between them, which certainly is the case. He was giving them each attributes of each other. I'm not necessarily claiming that it's a reference or an inside joke, however.

Thank you for the clarification of my original post-- I did only mean blurring. Further, I mearly ask the question of all of you: could this be an emerging inside joke or perhaps the second instance of a new running gag? (I am looking for more instances of blurry treatment of the two characters.) Although it is a subtle point, does anyone else think that it deserves comment within the write-up for this Strong Bad e-mail?--Solwyvern 20:49, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

I still say coincidence. It's come up before that one character is referred to as ("I want my own cartoon, Pom Pom," to Strong Bad, for instance) or compared with ("Everyone's favorite blue midget Homestar: Homsar!" is an example) another. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 21:34, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
I disagree with Homsar and Homestar being that much of a problem. Homsar was just created because of a misspelling of Homestar in an email, so he would be a blue midget Homestar. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 22:06, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps it is coincidence; however, your first example is just Homestar being confused-- something that happens all the time. Your second is a fact: Homsar IS a midget version of Homestar turned blue. Coach Z is not a green version of Bubs (nor is Bubs an orange version of Coach Z), and clearly Strong Bad is not confused as was Homestar in the facts. This gag was very deliberate; The Brothers clearly had Strong Bad say "Bubs? Green Bubs?" Then they reinforced the reference within the easter egg (I wonder how Bubs & Coach Z knew about it?) Maybe there is nothing to this, but I am interested to see if it ever comes up again.--Solwyvern 22:15, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Maxymoronically oxymoronic

Why does every anonny think that it's acceptable to delete the "Strong Bad doesn't use the word 'maxymoronic' to refer to an oxymoron" part of the fact? No named user seems to have a problem with it. Is there something wrong with it that I don't see? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 19:43, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Not as far as I can see... Maybe there's a subliminal message that only works on IPs... --DorianGray
Maybe because it's obviously not referring to an oxymoron, since jumbo/LARGE is not an oxymoron, and therefore is an overclarification?--H-ko 05:18, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
As the fact said in the first place. Then some IP removed it, so I reworded it. Then some other IP removed it, so I tried permutating and rewording it in various ways before the IPs finally gave up. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 05:37, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Jumbo Shrimp?

First thing I thought of when StrongBad used the maxymoron "Jumbo-LARGE" was the oxymoron "Jumbo-Shrimp". Am I the only one who thought that? Is this worthy of a note on the Wiki? (Should I just add it? I was told to post it here on the discussion page first ...)

First time the possibility occurred to me was right now when I read this. I'm willing to chalk it up to coincidence. (By the by, "Jumbo shrimp" isn't a true oxymoron, as "shrimp" is used in reference to the aquatic crustacean that people eat, not a short person, but it's frequently called an "oxymoron" humorously.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 19:53, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
That hadn't occured to me either before I read your comment. I say STUFF it. -Brightstar Shiner 20:24, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
I did think of that immediately when viewing the e-mail. It is a common enough reference in our culture to suspect that The Brothers were at least aware of it while composing the e-mail if they weren't playing off it directly.--Solwyvern 20:58, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Actually, shrimp meant a small version of something before it referred to any specific crustacean. Being that shrimp are the smallest in the lobster/crayfish/prawn continuity, they were called 'shrimp crayfish' or 'shrimp lobsters' or something to that effect.
Perhaps, but that's not the point. Shrimp is not being used in that context as something small; it's being used as the name of the crustacean. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 03:51, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
Also shrimp is primarily an American term--most English-speaking countries call them prawn. Jumbo shrimp in particular are usually called king prawn elsewhere, I believe. According to Miriam-Webster [1], the origin is an Old Norse word meaning "to shrivel up". --H-ko 05:27, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
Yeah well...did anybody else presume that maybe TBC just thought that nonsence up off the top of their heads and didn't intend for it to pertain to anything?-Brightstar Shiner 20:40, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

I thought that this was a very obvious reference, and was shocked not to find it in the "explanations" section. At least where I live, "Jumbo shrimp" is a stock example of an oxymoron, one of the four or five most well-known. It seems inconceivable to me that it was unintentional.

Except that, as said before, "jumbo shrimp" is not a true oxymoron - it just seems that way due to a different meaning of the word "shrimp". --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 21:39, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
Whether it is or isn't a "true" oxymoron is irrelevant; the fact is that it is well-known as an example of one.
The fact that it is not actual, but supposed, does not mean it is notable. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 23:14, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
Let me elucidate. "George W. Bush is an example of a bad US president." Is it actual or supposed? Thus, is it notable? Regardless of whether a lot of people believe it to be true, it is a supposition and therefore has no place in a wiki. "Jumbo shrimp" is supposedly an oxymoron, but regardless of how many people believe it to be so, an excellent argument remains as to why it is not. Therefore, it has no place in the wiki. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 23:17, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

— 69.162.18.37 (Talk | contribs) 04:14, 11 September 2006 (left unsigned)

The discussion is simply this -- several of us believe "Jumbo Large" is specifically a play on the supposed oxymoron "Jumbo Shrimp".
Okay.
Well, maybe the fact should be this: "Maxymoron is a play on the word oxymoron and jumbo/LARGE is a play on the joke oxymoron Jumbo Shrimp." Arguing on the oxymoron-ness of "Jumbo Shrimp" is getting us ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE. Are we at least clear on that? -Brightstar 19:57, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Sure, by now it should be clear that "jumbo shrimp" is not an oxymoron. But I also believe that it should be clear by now that we can't draw an obvious connection between jumbo/Large and jumbo shrimp. That "fact" is pure speculation, and it's simply not up to standard. Loafing 20:11, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Nevertheless, Jumbo Shrimp is a perceived oxymoron to the general public. jumbo/LARGE is not even close to being an oxymoron; it it incredibly redundant, not contradictory.
That fact should be fine. Now nobody change it! -Brightstar 20:12, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Just Something

We don't have to add this, I just wanted to point out that Strong Bad or The Cheat never actually tried to open the doors. It's just a funny little tidbit I noticed. » c u t e p e t s r u s « T/C 22:39, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

We also don't point out that Homestar opened the door (with his invisible hands) even though there is no visible door handle on the Gremlin. -- Tom 00:42, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Powered by the SBemail??

I think this is just me, but when The Cheat slams the CD into the 8 track player, the CD looks almost PBTC-ish. Could that be possible, or am I just hallucinating due to lack of sleep? · · T2|Things 23:29, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

It looks a little odd to me, but not powered by the cheat. Maybe it's because it has no shading. --- link_icon.gifThe Joe(Talk) 23:36, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Maybe. If thats really the case, should it be mentioned anywhere under the fun facts? As a goof? · · T2|Things 23:40, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
I suppose it could. Other pages mention it whenever an object has inconsistant shading, so why not this one? - link_icon.gifThe Joe(Talk) 23:43, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Works for me. I already put it up as a goof. · · T2|Things 23:44, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Spongebob Squarepants

Is the scene where Strong Bad says: "All right, you ready to go, The Cheat? Why is Strong Mad hiding under that not-originally-yellow-spotted sheet from Strong Sad's bedroom? Not my bedroom." A reference to SpongeBob SquarePants? SpongeBob is yellow and square like the sheet that covered the Bull Honkey. — Blue Leopard (Talk | contribs) 08:27, 8 September 2006 (left unsigned)

Are you implying that Spongebob looks like a ... stained .. sheet? But seriously, the sheet looks nothing like Spongebob. Being a bit rectangular and having yellow spots does not make it look like a yellow sponge with pants and a face. Loafing 08:40, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] reference to highschool

I don't know if it's just me but when he said the thing about the stain being a whole 'nother world with a whole 'nother Strong Bad and The Cheat it made me think of highschool when he said that before "middle school" they were paramecium living in free petri dish USA. Coincidentaly a stain is what you use to better identify cell parts when being veiwed under a microscope. Is this just an odd coincidence or a reference? Andrew911

I'm in the "odd coincidence" column, myself. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:51, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Booterscotch fuzz = Mike?

Watching the e-mail the first time 'round, I couldn't help but notice that the half-sucked booterscotch in desperate need of a shave resembles Mike's recent growth of facial hair. Anyone else agree? Gus 07:01, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Eh. I just thought it kinda looked like a scraggly beard and sideburns, which is exactly what he has. Is there a more recent pic of Mike anywhere? Gus 08:24, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
Reminds me of a particular Sketchbook image, actually. --DorianGray

[edit] Maxymoron

I always thought maxymoron mean two words put together that mean exactly the same. (Like jumbo/LARGE) Yet the Portmaneu page suggests that it means something completely different. Which one is it?

"Always" isn't so long for you, eh? :) The Portmanteaus page lists the words combined to form the portmanteau, but does not attempt to actually define them. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 13:13, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Jamming tune

I'm listening to Bob Marley right now and I came across his song Jamming. Check it out here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffCmFDzaYyQ

I immediately thought of road trip (damn, I'm a freak!), since the refrain goes "...we're jamming and I hope you like jamming tune".

I'm not entirely sure this is a reference, I would say that depends on how well known this song is. I don't listen to Marley often, so I don't know. King Klear 21:20, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

On last.fm, Jamming has been 14th most played song by Bob Marley in the last week with over 2000 plays and it does even better on the 6 months chart. I'd say that it must be pretty well known then. Anybody else thinks the Jamming tune is a reference? King Klear 20:57, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
