Ding! retirement is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

I got a great image of the easter egg

This is the text to the egg... I don't know how to format it though. :S I apologize, I'm still learning.

There's more easter eggs strewn about this email

After the Horses/IT Pros joke, the chimney pipe can be clicked to show a Dullard comic about such a thing. There's also a couple of clickable squares on the Lappy screen before the TSoND; can't figure out what they do though.

Also, click on the plugs underneath the desk after the Tandy explodes for the pixelated explosion again. — 81.178.84.219 (Talk | contribs) 10:57, 2 October 2006 (left unsigned)

There seems to be no links on the website itself to the email, only here. How will the General Public SEE it? --Gerkuman 11:06, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

It's on the email manu. Clear you cache, maybe. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 11:09, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

resolved ?s in retirement article

Hello, I don't have an account, and am having trouble with the editing, so could somebody please change the "?s" in the article? the first ? is "half-FULL bags." the other is "italian herb-CHIPOTLE". thanks.

Glad to see that you did manage to change it yourself :-) Loafing 11:53, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Possible Read-World Reference

The filenames you get when you click SB's diamond are heavily truncated and abbreviated, and match the style of old DOS 8.3 names (that's in length... 8 letters, a period, and three more letters) that were in use before long file names were made possible through Windows. Such names were used so filenames could still be descriptive and still fit within the 8.3 limitations at the same time. However SB's filenames are still clearly far too long to fit within 8.3 characters. --64.195.243.2 14:12, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Lil' Brudder

I Noticed That When Strong Bad Is Panicing Around Under The Lappys Tail, That It Plays The Same Noise As Lil' Brudder's "Leg Failing" -- Assassinator666 14:19, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I think it's Homsar's walking noise.

Oh, Didn't Realise That They're The Same. My Bad. -- Assassinator666 14:47, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
That sound is used A LOT on the site. It was in cliffhangers too, when the Thnikkaman was waddling away. - Image:TinySaturn2.GIF Saturn 15:15, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Which computers?

I noticed the Lappy is listed as a computer for this toon along with the Tandy. Yet, the Lappy's not actually used to answer an email. Is there another reason it's listed on top? Or is that a mistake? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 17:24, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

I wrote that out of habbit, and I think you're right. I'll fix it. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 17:50, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Real World Reference

What about the who-dunit and the 7-eleven/Simpsons Who Shot Mr. Burns? Contest?

Also, what about the Buck-O-Nine Reference?

The contest reminds me more of the Butterfinger/Simpsons contest with who stole Bart's butterfinger or something like that. since something was STOLEN, not shot. Yadaman 23:20, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
forgot to mention, I'm not sure if this is true for the 7-Eleven one, but in the Butterfinger one, the person who did it was near completely unexpected and kind of a shock ending, similar to this one (we all thought it was a person, and BAM! it was the old computers). Yadaman 23:23, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Candies have had a long tradition of having things stolen. Cheetos, Smarties (Canadian ones anyway), M&M's, lots of stuff. TTATOT ftw!

How will it check

Should we mention that while the Tandy continued to check emails after it broke, the Compy was thrown away immediately after breaking? I mean, how can it check an email with that gaping hole? -71.192.94.44 19:10, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Guess we'll find out tomorrow, eh? --DorianGray
Remember, this is the Talk for this page, not the Forum. As for noting that the Tandy checked emails after breaking, that's already noted on the Tandy page, and it wouldn't belong here anyway. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 19:17, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

make a bigger hole duh!

Back button added late?

Can anyone else verify that the Back button did not originally appear? I watched this a couple hours ago and I could swear there wasn't a Back button that time around. Octan 21:08, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

It was definitely there half an hour after release. Loafing 21:29, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Can I get a witness?

No real-world reference for this? My first thought was actually Grand Funk Railroad's "Some Kind of Wonderful" (which I have heard), but after some research I suppose the often-covered Marvin Gaye title (which I have not heard) is more likely.

There's no real-world reference because the fact is TTATOT. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 21:59, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Besides Gaye's and GFR's songs, there's Frank Black's song. All three were suggested as references, but they can't all be, so no reference. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 22:07, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Sad eyes?

The saddest of Bads...

At the beginning, Strong Bad's eyes are sad (the top halves are taken off). Isn't this noteworthy since it doesn't happen very often?

I don't recall it ever happening. Let's get a few more keen observers to chime in though. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 22:28, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Wait... that has happened before... Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 22:52, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
EC It is a rare occurrence, and it was noted at its first appearance in long pants. I tend to think that the "coming in on a worried Strong Bad" bit in the transcript is sufficient for this article, since it has happened and has been noted before. Trey56 22:56, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

But in the long pants one, he's showing exasperation. In this one it's slanted for sadness. Just saying...

They're just partially closed. Or open, depending on your attitude. Either way, we're seeing his eyelids. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 01:44, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

IMO, we should mention this occurance, since it conveys a different emotion than the "long pants look". - TaranchulaVamp15

DULLARD = Dilbert

I think it's pretty clear that Dullard by "Levert Burtmore" is a reference to Dilbert by Scott Adams. Do we need a vote on this or should I just go ahead and add it? --Sailor titan 22:20, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Already mentioned on the Dullard page. - Image:TinySaturn2.GIF Saturn 22:22, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Saving the orphanage

The remark about saving the orphanage reminded me of the Blues Brothers, but I'll let you guys decide if it's worthy enough for the real-world references section.

First thing that came to my mind. Glad I'm not the only one Anonny. I say yes! -- TaranchulaVamp15 -- Here, now, on my time.

It's kind of standard drama, saving the orphanage, saving the orphans. Hey, maybe it's Ibsen's Ghosts.

extra buttons?

dont know what they do but did anyone else notice 2 small useless buttons on the lappy's screen in the rooftop scene?

edit conflict I think those're just the contrast buttons on the Tandy, they're clickable but they don't do anything. - Image:TinySaturn2.GIF Saturn 02:37, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Goof

In the Flash version, when Strong Bad is slinking off to Bubs' Concession Stand, when Strong Bad goes out of the frame, his body disappears.

That's completely normal. -FaceCrap 02:36, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

His head doesn't. Retromaniac 03:46, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
So? His body has lots more moving parts. -FaceCrap 16:01, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

What year is it?

How many times now has Strong Bad gotten the year wrong? There's #150, there's the comic convention, this one, any others?

That's not altogether true. In regards to 150, he quickly corrected himself at the end ("All my Strong Bad doppelg䀀ngers represent... Sesquicentenn-email, 2005— I-I mean six."). And here he says, "Now, let's check emails like it was the deuce double-ought dweice! It just means 2002..." He said, "Like it was." MHarrington 05:03, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Buck OR nine

I'm almost certain that SB is saying "Everybody's trying to make a buck OR nine off of my etc. etc." Listen to it with a good pair of headphones and the "R" sound comes through quite clearly. By extension, I think that the "Buck o' Nine" CA ska band reference is quite unlikely. -TobyTheRobot 03:03, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Real-world reference that hasn't been mentioned

Marshie's body when he says "Win Big" is likely meant to be a parody of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters

That's a humongous stretch. The SPMM doesn't even bear a resemblance to Big Marshie. 71.231.56.40 04:27, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Slink?

I'm positive that "Slink" is a reference to "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (the TV special) because they say "slink" and he moves just like it... I even told my sis about how Strong Bad moved off the couch and her first reaction was "Oh, from the Grinch!" I'm desperately trying to find my copy so I can confirm this. Can I get a witness?

What about Slinkys? They slink. — It's dot com 02:42, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
In a very similar fashion, too. --DorianGray
I'm pretty sure it was "slunk" in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, as in past tense...not sure if that might make the smallest difference in the argument... --BlueStar 05:47, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Long filenames

The 8.3 filename restriction wasn't anything to do with FAT16 vs. FAT32; "long filename" support was introduced in windows with the "vfat" driver, which came before FAT32 came around. The two things happened at around the same time, but they're not related in any way.

Eenie, meenie, miney, moe...

  • Strong Bad has no problem typing commas on the Lappy, despite its missing "toe".

Is this fun fact really worth noting? Most keys have a little spring or rubber thing below them, so it's not that hard to type if you're missing a key. I don't think it must be removed, but I'm inclined against keeping it.--Bobo the King 08:59, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

We don't know how much of the key was removed. I'm for keeping it. --Jay (Talk) 09:02, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
I think it works well as a remark, which is how it's currently categorized (I'd object to it being labelled as a goof). Heimstern Läufer 14:41, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Maybe you should ask Strong Bad how he types commas without comma keys. I bet you'll get a speedy answer. — It's dot com 14:48, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
I know from personal experience that yes, it is possible even if the rubber knob and spring had also been removed. It's VERY hard (like it'll work 1 time out of 10) but if you press hard enough on the shiny part of it, sometimes it'll work. -WarthogDemon 23:25, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
With the whole key removed, or even part of the key, yes, it IS possible to type that letter. On the other hand, you may not be able to do it as quickly as Strong Bad types it. My enter key was missing off my laptop for a week or two and I had a very hard time typing quickly, even though I normally type.. well, almost as fast as Strong Bad! (I spend a LOT of time on the computer. xD) Anyways, I think this is something that belongs on the page, because it is accurate, IMO, and interesting. (I just looked through the page and didn't see it on there so I'm assuming it's been taken off, but I may have looked over it.) CompGrl323 (talk · edits) 06:01, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it is possible to type a key when its removed. That happened to me with the tab key, because i had to hold it down during entire toons to look out for easter eggs. (That was before i learned about flash seek bars) Dr. Savage 23:30, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Gears and Fans

I hardly think its necessary for a computer to have working "gears and fans" to run. Certainly not gears anyway, and fans is highly debatable. --JamesDean 09:01, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

I exploded the cooling system in my mom's computer and it continued to work fine. Well, maybe not "fine" (it freezes up whenever the CPU gets too hot), but I'm sure Strong Bad could continue to check email, especially since the giant hole in the screen would provide additional cooling. He just better not tax it too much by trying to play Peasant's Quest.--Bobo the King 09:04, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Actually, if you want to really be technical, the gears and fan would make up part of the monitor and it would actually be a cathode ray tube considering the suggested age of the computer. In this case, the monitor would not work at all because the electron gun would have been completely blasted out of the monitor by the shotgun blast. But, when has reality ever limited what's possible in the Homestar Runner universe? --Eaglescout1984 10:44, 3 October 2006 (GMT)

Of course, a computer that old wouldn't need a fan or heat sink for cooling anyway... - 68.108.243.128 00:50, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Marzipan's Hair?

It appeared to me that Marzipan's hair was just tied up, as many a gymnast or contortionist is oft to do.

Concerning Automatic hole formatting!

Sorry, new to Wiki-editing, but I was wondering if that fact that Strongbad's reply is in this e-mail doesn't seem to fully conform to the compy's auto hole formatting would count as a goof? --Ilascott

I'm pretty sure it's intentional, so no, I don't think it would count. Heimstern Läufer 14:42, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Maybe somehow the email was already like that, and its just that there were spaces between the parts, but strong bad didn't do that --Penguindude

Lappy's "toe" missing

It isn't a goof, because it was a goof in part A.

"I give you...Kong, the eighth wonder of the world!"

I'm trying to add the fact that, though "the eighth wonder of the world" is applied a lot, Strong Bad's use is almost certainly a direct reference to the most famous, Carl Denham's carnival-barker-like use of the term to introduce Kong in captivity in the classic 1933 film "King Kong." However, it keeps getting undone, instantly.

I've seen the movie enough times that it was the first thing to come to mind when Strong Bad used the term. In fact, that's the most famous one, as I said; furthermore, the combination of Strong Bad as carnival barker, and the fact that he's introducing Strong Mad, seems to make it extremely plausible. I stand by it.--128.120.173.11 17:38, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

What you're saying is not implausible, but it's not necessarily likely either. I thought more of Kong when I saw The Cheat chained to the ground. — It's dot com 18:17, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
There are a few possible kong references throughout the email. The above two that you have stated and also the Donky Kong reference when SB is dancing around in DK fassion in the last email. I R F 18:35, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Leviathan?

Should "Leviathan" be a real-world reference? It's a sea monster in the Old Testament. [1] I know it's also a book by Hobbes, but given that it's referring to Brother Graw Mad here, I'm thinking the sea-monster allusion is the right one. - Rasmoh 18:20, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

I think so too. And it should be an explanation, not an RWR. Loafing 18:40, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Return of the Tandy

The following fact was proposed, which I like, even though I think it's too much of a stretch. The two do bear some interesting similarities, though.

  • The the appearance of the ghosts of Tandy and Compy watching over as Strong Bad and Lappy are happily walking in the sunset may be a reference to the end of Return of the Jedi when the ghosts of Obi Wan, Anakin Skywalker, and Yoda appear during the victory celebration.

Trey56 04:25, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

I agree that it's too much of a stretch, but I'm glad you have it here. I like any potential reference to Star Wars, especially since (as far as I know) TBC have never done any overt ones. - Point7Q 04:29, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Check for yourself. --DorianGray
I think that this has been done on purpose. TBC have made reference to the abundance of flash Star Wars parodies, and made that unaired sbemail where StrongBad makes greeting cards to console people whose Star Wars parodies sucked.

Rename plan of action

So... what should we do? Move everything here and make retirement, retirement A and retirement B redirects? With appropriate mentions in Trivia, of course? --phlip TC 07:35, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

That would make sense to me. I wasn't sure what to do when I started the page, so I left it out there to see what would happen. - Jason
I'm for keeping the old ones, myself. Especially if the Flash files are still there (the html files aren't, but I haven't checked the Flash yet.) --Jay (Talk) 08:25, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Ooookay, so they're not there any more. Still, I'm for keeping the old ones, but if consensus is to remove them, then fine. I won't be happy about it, but it won't be the first time. --Jay (Talk) 08:26, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
There are quite a few changes between the old ones and the new ones, keeping the old pages wouldn't be a bad idea. Esspecially if the old flash files are archived somewhere. - Jason
I guess that makes sense. I'm still for making retirement a redirect rather than a disambig, and then put {{about}} and {{for}} at the top of the page. --phlip TC 08:44, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
As long as the changes between the originals and the new combined one are well documented I'll be happy either way. But I'd be slightly happier w/ keeping the old pages. Atw4299 09:45, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm guessing the (combined) will disappear in a week or so. Because it won't make sense to future new viewers as is. But anyway, we definitely shouldn't have a duplicate transcript like this.I think we shoud all merge them here, and put something in trivia and maybe post the mirrors in the external links. - Joshua 13:32, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I'll bet you one million lbs of candy that ultimately the name on the Denny's menu will just be retirement, which is where this article should probably be. And I don't think we should maintain separate pages of nearly-identical information, as it violates the once-and-only-once rule. The other pages should be redirects, with the differences from previous versions explained somewhere. Oh, and I totally called this. — It's dot com 14:01, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
My counterargument comes in the form of five words: Teen Girl Squad Issue 1. That is all. --Jay (Talk) 16:31, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
My argument comes in two words: crazy cartoon. The flash files for A and B are not even on the site anymore which is why I think they should be deleted. -Jeppo (TLC) 16:49, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
As Denny's lists this as "retirement (combined)", and the two halves no longer exist, my vote is to 1) drop our grapes, 2) check to be sure no info has been forgotten on the A and B pages, 3) delete retirments A and B and possibly the retirment disambig page, and 4) unmask that Cheat. The links to the mirrored half-emails can be linked from here. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:09, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Ow... your vote is succulently crushing my windpipe. I'm all for that one. — Lapper (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Process has begun. We need to go through the incoming links to the A and B page to be sure everything's fixed right. This'll take a little time or a few people working together. Oh, and we need to leave the subtitle transcripts alone, so the mirrors can use them. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 19:18, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

I question the need to physically delete retirement A and B. They don't hurt anything as redirects, and the history can always be viewed to see how the toons originally existed seperately. Just like we don't delete older revisions of any page, retirement A and B are older revisions of this page, which was mostly copied and pasted. Thunderbird 21:44, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
I'd support keeping them around as redirects if there's conmsensus for it. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:46, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
We could even merge the histories if we wanted, but the redirects should stay, if only because there are links to the separate pages out there in InternetLand (for example, on various forums, including our own). — It's dot com 21:50, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Merging the history would be a bad idea, since they overlap in time... the edits would be sorted by time, and the edits from the two pages would be all mixed up with each other... it would just get confusing. I say just leave them as is. --phlip TC 21:57, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
As a follow-up to this thread, the "(combined)" was indeed dropped from the name yesterday. — It's dot com 13:34, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Can I Get A Reference?

Am I right in thinking that when Strong Bad says "Can I get a witness?", it's a reference to Some Kind of Wonderful by Grand Funk Railroad? I know TBC probably don't listen to that kind of stuff, but the quote jumped out at me as that song lyric. What do you guys think? -Brightstar Shiner 20:48, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Or "Can I Get A Witness" by Marvin Gaye, or "Can I Get A Witness?" by Run-DMC, or... See also this page... it's a common phrase. This was also already discussed. --phlip TC 21:16, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Oh. Right. Sorry. -Brightstar Shiner 20:13, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Easter Egg Tie?

From flashback: This email has the most Easter eggs in any email to date, with eight. As far as I can tell, this email now ties that record of eight, if you don't merge the seperate easter eggs of clicking on the Tandy's contrast knobs, and clicking on the Compy's contrast knobs, at the end. Thunderbird 22:57, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Yeah it could be... But I think Andy Kaufman was referring more to the old timey "song and dance" men when he was using the phrase as an alternative to being considered a "comedian" which he loathed.

Missing Toe

Lappy says she wants to find her toe, and the two computers jump away... even though Strong Bad has had the toe all along because it was left with the ransom note in "cliffhangers."

Hush Puppies

Ok, so whats wrong with my post? Hush Puppies are a brand of shoe, so why can't I add it to the article? It still makes sense. :\ --Gerkuman 18:51, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

It's a lot more likely that it refers to the food thing, though. --DorianGray
I understand your agrument but that doesn't rule out the shoes. Computers can't eat OR wear shoes. I just think it's fair to add both. I admit I should've added it here for others to comment on it though, before adding it.--Gerkuman 18:57, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
"We can all go out for hushpuppies." "We can go out for food" is more likely than "we can go out for shoes". No one says "let's go out for shoes. You guys still like shoes, right?" --DorianGray
A lot of people like shoes and shop for shoes. It's certainly very possible. I think we should have a vote on it at least. --Gerkuman 19:08, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
"We can all go out for hushpuppies" is not the kind of phrase that you use when you shop for shoes. Also, The Paper says "I like hushpuppies". Note the lowercase. Loafing 19:17, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
I originally wrote the hushpuppy fact. I had only heard of the shoe myself, but after doing a little research, it was clear that if it's a reference to anything it's a reference to the food. Really, going out for Hush Puppies makes little sense, and as we see they don't split it into two capitalized words, it makes it even less likely the shoe is what's being referred to. Remember, when we cite references and explanations, we have to consider not just "does it have similarities" but more pointedly "is it likely this is what TBC had in mind here". Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:10, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
The inference that the majority of people who watch this don't even know that a shoe called Hush Puppies exists should be enough to have the fact changed so that it only mentions the food. I didn't know about either, but I assumed it was food. -Brightstar Shiner 21:18, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
I've heard of both long before this toon even came out. However, since Hush Puppies the shoe brand makes no sense, and since I worked in a fast food restaurant that served hushpuppies when I was in college, the food hushpuppies makes more sense to me. (They're actually fairly commonly placed with seafood, at least in the eastern parts of the country. Have yet to see any hushpuppies at all in the Seattle area.) --Jay (Talk) 21:29, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

119

Could "number 119 deleted" be the 119th e-mail Strong Bad has deleted, or does it repersent email 119(animal)?

The fun facts say animal. Checking the DELETED page, it doesn't appear to be 119 listed. Of course, it could just be random, too. --DorianGray
I think it's plausible to say it might have been the 119th deleted email, but there's absolutely nothing on the site to corroborate that. It would be speculation at best. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 00:26, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Order in the court

When I added the "Changes" section, I put the facts in chronological order, as we do with Easter eggs and cast lists. It's dot com then rearranged it, putting them in functional order (for instance, grouping differences based on the missing comma key together. I don't want to get into an edit war over this, so let's put it to the vote. Chronological or functional? I'm with chronological, of course. --Jay (Talk) 00:26, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Or we could discuss it. The list is in mostly chronological order, but the most important part is now first (describing how they were actually combined), and the two parts about the commas are together. — It's dot com 00:33, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
Discussing it always seems either turn into a vote or fizzle into nothing anyway when there are two people who disagree. I was just trying to beat it there. >_> Anyway, I'm just not sure that the "combining" aspect is the most important part; that's very subjective. --Jay (Talk) 00:38, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
If the combining aspect is not the most important change, then what is? — It's dot com 00:41, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
To be clear that we're talking about the same thing, the note at the top of the section already says that they were combined; what I meant was that the part about the paper's absence and the fade-in/out wasn't necessarily the most important part. --Jay (Talk) 00:46, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm still not sure I agree, but I no longer disagree enough for it to be out of chronological order, so I put it back like you had it. See? We didn't need a vote after all, just a talk. — It's dot com 00:53, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Tandy is already "dead"!

The Lappy was seen as a ghost in Email 48, yet now it's back in physical form - that's a bit strange. I'm not an experienced wiki editor, so if this doesn't belong in "Inside References" please move it to where it does belong. — Joshua 17:15 11 October 2006 (UTC) — 207.67.97.70 (Talk | contribs) 17:15 11 October 2006 (UTC) (left unsigned)

DorianGray, why did you remove my edit? "The king had its physical body" does not make the unusual situation normal. If I saw your ghost while you were still alive, that's even wierder than if I saw your ghost when you were dead. This requires an answer, or I will replace my change. — 207.67.97.70 (Talk | contribs) 22:29 11 October 2006 (UTC) (left unsigned)

HRWiki is not the place for philosophical debates about matters of the soul, even as they apply to personified electrical appliances... suffice it to say that computers, unlike humans, can be repaired from beyond the brink of death, so after being repaired at least enough to function as a sparking mess (possibly by the KoT, possibly by Bubs, who knows?) who's to say that the Tandy's spirit didn't return to the physical computer? To claim either way would be complete speculation on a matter that TBC have made no attempt to nail down, and thus not worthy of mention on the page. If you do want to discuss this, perhaps the "Religion and Politics" section of the forum would be more appropriate... --phlip TC 23:06, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
Anyway, the Lappy never died. How could you confuse the Lappy for the Tandy?! Lappy = laptop. --Jay (Talk) 23:10, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Wait a freakin' minute Stanley!

70.21.131.249 added the FF:

"On the tandy when you put the contross buttons up a little they will restart when homestar appears with the mountain dew"

I won't pretend to understand that. Then Jay reverted it with this summary:

"This only happens in like every single Tandy/Compy email ever!"

Can any party offer some sort of explanation as to why any of this transpired? Thanks. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 01:42, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

He probably means that the Tandy's contrast is reset when the toon cuts from SB typing to a wider shot that includes Homestar. Loafing 02:03, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
Exactly. In no email ever have the contrast settings been maintained between scene cuts. --Jay (Talk) 15:38, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Piped Links

What is the standard for piped links? Should we be using [[retirement (combined)|retirement]], or just [[retirement (combined)]] until it's renamed, if it is at all. I don't see the point of piping the links. 70.70.150.54

You're right. It's officially called retirement (combined), so that's how we should call it too. Loafing 21:24, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
I've been using the unpiped links myslef... Except, maybe one time where I piped it to show about A and B as separate. --DorianGray
Then there's a couple of fixes due here then, for whoever's interested. 70.70.150.54

Possible Steve Irwin Reference

Strong Bad's line: "You gotta be kidding me. Man, everybody's trying to make a buck or nine off my heart-drooping loss." may be a RWR to tried to sell fony Steve Irwin merchandise after his death, as well as bumper stickers sold.

Remember Streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch Armstrong? This is unlikely to be a reference especially because the story line was already begun before Irwin died. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:05, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

possible Eureka Seven rwr?

at one point in the series renton uses chips as an "anti-depressant" sorry if this is a bit of stretch but I figured I'd mention it.

No problem — the talk page is the perfect place to bring up this sort of thing. I'm not familiar with Eureka Seven, but I would doubt that this is a reference to it. Trey56 03:24, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
well in anycase it was oddly similar to me and it would more than likely go down to if TBC watch much anime. on a more fun note it added another chuckle to the sbemail intended or not!

TBC aren't anime fans so this is extremely unlikely. 71.231.56.40 04:39, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

You state that so equivocally. Have you proof? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 04:42, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
This commentary was quite revealing. Loafing 04:48, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Care to cite? Nothing there seems to indicate any opinion on anime. I see how they had a good time with their frienda and how they love the mushroom and the tear and the snot bubble. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 05:28, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
OK, here I go: it shows that they don't really know anything about anime. The "tear" is a sweatdrop. The "mushroom" is a steamy-typey thing, etc. They also remark how they are familiar with these symbols from computer games. To an anime fan, it's a conversation of people who don't watch anime. Loafing 05:33, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Old Strong Bad head position

When Strong Bad checks his last Tandy email, his head was on the position from the first seven emails ever. (before they started making Strong Bad's head move when he talks instead). Does this count? Is it already there? --68.145.103.189 22:02, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

It's already there ^_^ Loafing 22:04, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

The computer's gender.

I think Strong bad is genderly confused when it comes to unanimated objects. Becaus first he told the paper to meet his new "brother" consuming that the Lappy is a boy. But now it's oficial that the Lappy is a girl. So you can use this as an excuse if you are against the Tandy being a girl. Yo yo mom

Two questions

1. How can a computer pick itself up and move around the place? And especially how can it pick up other objects? 2. Why do all of you think it is normal for such a thing to happen?

Hel-loo! Does anybody know why the section stub sign is still up on the commentary transcript? It's because somebody still has to get out the DVD and figure out those unintelligible lines! I'm A vs. I'm The

Somehow I knew it would get reverted. I can't understand why — I'm sure I'm right. Here goes.. "I'm (a/the) song and dance man" ? I say: the. It's as clear as can be. OptimisticFool 19:15, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Kenneth

Marshie's opening remark of "Hello, Kenneth", is likely not random. I think it comes from the infamous "What's the Frequency, Kenneth" moment in 1986. (Dan Rather was mugged on Park Avenue by a complete wacko who kept yelling, "Kenneth! What is the frequency?" The incident inspired the R.E.M. song of this name.) Am I extrapolating too much? TJDevil02

Cheat's Fleas

After I read that remark, I recorded the sound of The Cheat's fleas and slowed it down and it didn't sound at all like Strong Bad or The King of Town saying "lalalalalala". It sounded more like people screaming. It's from the Flash file though, which is pretty crappy in audio quality. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the DVDs or anything that would have it in better quality... at any rate, my point is, I honestly don't think it sounds at all like them. Is there any credence to this remark? --141.224.237.41 06:34, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Longest toon?

My question is on this edit. Basically, i'm not sure that HoD should be considered a toon in this respect. — Defender1031*Talk 19:51, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Me neither. There really anything about it that's a "toon." We've Flash files in the Homestar Runner universe that have had more frames than retirement (I don't remember what it was, but there was something...), but that doesn't count. --75.5.176.233 19:59, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
depending on the outcome of this discussion, this may have to be reverted as well. — Defender1031*Talk 21:16, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Control alt wherever I hit with the pickaxe

So, in the DVD commentary, there's some speculation amongst TBC on what key Strong Bad hit with his pickaxe. I recently took a screenshot of it and it looks like he's hitting A, S, D, or something in that area. This may or may not be that case as he has a nonstandard-looking keyboard. Does anyone else have any ideas and should this be added to the commentary Fun Facts? PowerFile:Homestar Kamikaze Green Favicon.pngPie 03:22, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Well, like you said, it may or may not be A, S, D, or something. Since we really can't say for sure, and since anyone can just watch the toon to see for themselves, I don't think it would make a very good fun fact. — It's dot com 04:09, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Video game reference?

After SB has spotted the Lappy's tail, and is moving back and forth as he looks up at Bubs' roof, his strange leg movements make it seem as though this must be referencing some classic video game, but I can't for the life of me remember which one.

Chips goof

When Strong Bad is listing the flavor of his chips, a small part of the "buffalo" flavor image is visible when "herb" is listed, yet disappears when "chipotle" is listed. --Zoen 14:59, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Two-Parter

I'm sorry if this information is somewhere else and I missed it, but I'm curious— how were the two parts of retirement separated? Like, where in the toon did retirement A end and retirement B begin? Right before Strong Bad checks the email on the Tandy? I just want to know because I didn't watch them as they came out (I wasn't an obsessed Homestar Runner fan yet). Can someone tell me?
