New evolution.

I think Strong Sad has a new look in this email. User:MICGAGUH

No, he doesn't. That happened last week. but, for some reason, he switches between his old and new design. the old one shows up when he films the dead plant. then, when he graps the monopoly money, he has his new, more realistic hands. this goes on throughout the rest of the toon.--Crudely Drawn Cupcake 13:44, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

404'd?

Is anyone else getting 404'd when they try to watch this?--DJmankiewicz 12:22, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Yep, I definitely am. Even with OpenDNS Servers. ColdReactive 13:01, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
I had to manually change my encoding to UTF-8. There's an accented character in the title bar, and without a proper doctype declaration, some browsers get tripped up. 114.243.125.154 13:27, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Already Unicode UTF-8 sadly. By the way, How can I change the source of a page I can't see? ColdReactive 13:29, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
You wanna use a proxy. Something like FastBox.86.138.180.185 14:13, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
That page you linked seems to be under construction sadly. ColdReactive 14:16, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
"Fast Box Dot Net: It's Dot Com!" Changed it.
thank you, but the proxy can't seem to show a correct compe email menu. ColdReactive 14:59, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
I can't see either! Maybe it's cause I'm a different time-zone or something. It's pretty early here on the west coast.

I'm also getting 404'd. Furthermore, when I visit homestarrunner.com, there's no mention of a new e-mail on the main page, and the Strong Bad E-mails list is the Corpy Remote with 'imaginary' listed as the most recent. I wonder if this is related to the truncated quote of the day file some of us were getting. Can someone who is successfully loading the site tell us what IP address homestarrunner.com is resolving to? -ReverendTed 14:28, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm getting a 404 error, and the main page says last updated 8/3. and i live about 3 hours from tbc in the same time zone. The Knights Who Say Ni 14:41, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

You can access the toon at http://69.59.23.70/sbemail203.swf if you can't access the site via http://homestarrunner.com. Wait...that gives me a bad hostname error...never mind. Softer Keypresses

Not sure whether this would be mentioned here, or just on the Compé page, but to me it sounds like the Compé has softer\smoother keypress sounds than previous Compys. -ReverendTed 16:03, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Choosy users choose single references

"Evil Moms choose Evil Gif" is a play on the sentence "Choosy developers choose GIF", which itself is a play on Jif peanut butter tag line, "Choosy Moms choose Jif"). Choosy developers choose GIF is a rumored sentence that CompuServe Developers, who created the GIF format, said around the office.

Problem is, he says "Moms", not "Developers", which means it's actually closer to the original than the "developers" line (since he pronounces Gif the same way as "Jif"). I say either footnote the "developers" bit or nix it. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 16:45, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Nix it. Both the line from the email and the developers bit are references to the peanut butter, but I doubt the line from the email is intentionally referencing the developers bit. — It's dot com 17:28, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Short Answer, Long Answer

Should it be noted that that joke was done essentially verbatim in the Spore episode of Zero Punctuation? -128.103.10.135 00:35, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

I also thought about it, and I think it should stay on the page, but somehow I have a feeling the the long NOOOO have earlier sources. I found this cartoon, but it doesn't have the source year. The Zero Punctuation came out on 17 September 2008, And the long answer joke is the first and most notable one in the video review. It's so exaggerated that it's repeated before the end credits. So, does anybody have a different, more TBC-style source for the joke, or are we going to claim "originality" here? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 04:42, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't think it should stay on. It's an old joke, and I don't think that something from 2008 should be sited as the original. I found a post on gamespot from Jan 2 2008 that used it and a Yahoo answer from 2 years ago that used it. I just think that citing that review as the source is ill informed unless TBC say they got it from there.--98.223.125.74 05:02, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, the first time I heard it was in Jon Stewart's monologue on whether the U.S. government bungled its handling of Hurricane Katrina on the September 6, 2005 edition of The Daily Show. I don't know if the joke is older than that, but ZP's use is not the first, the funniest, or the most widely heard.Tirian 16:26, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't think this joke was inspired by ZP's. ZP's is obnoxiously long, Strong Bad's is only long enough for it to be funny. Danny Lilithborne 11:58, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
I'd be willing to bet $100 that TBC watch ZP, and were intentionally referencing it. It just makes sense.—Supuhstar* Image:Supuhstar(SupuhSmall).gif 14:38, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Zero Punctuation?

Strongbad's "short answer/long answer" is pretty much exactly the same as a ZP video a while back for Spore:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/218-Spore (usually has a good bit of swearing in it, so most likely nsfw)

Think it's worth mentioning as a real-world reference? Or too vague?

See the conversation two sections up. — Defender1031*Talk 06:29, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Whoops, how did I miss that? Sorry!

Juno

The opening of the "indie film" is very much like the opening to Juno; with the little-known band soundtrack and pencil drawings filling in the scenes etc. I leave the edit in your hands if you deem it worthy. (Previous unsigned comment left by 87.254.80.152)

I removed this Real-World Reference item yesterday:
  • The animated intro in Pom Pom's indie movie is a reference to films which use hand-drawn style opening credit sequences, such as this one from Juno.
on the grounds that Juno is (the contributor even admits) not the only thing this could be a reference to, and I thought it was our policy around here not to make statements like "Hand-drawn animated opening credit sequences are a reference to hand-drawn animated opening credit sequences." Nonetheless, the item was resurrected a few edits later, and even brought back in its original form a few edits after that, and has now sprouted an additional excuse for inclusion, that the director is the son of a famous director (which doesn't make it any more of a reference to hand-drawn animated intros). However, I am not someone who has time to keep coming back and deleting something just to stand my ground, so let me just register my disagreement here. LikeAsItself 02:37, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
It says "such as." That means that it's not saying it's a reference to only Juno, but just using that particular one as an example. I'm reverting. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 02:46, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
I didn't add the reference to begin with, but changed it back to Juno with explanation after someone else suggested Shortbus. I think it's probably an actual reference to Juno, especially with the added director comment. Regardless, if you look at it grammatically, it isn't of the form "Hand-drawn animated opening credit sequences are a reference to hand-drawn animated opening credit sequences," but "Hand-drawn animated opening credit sequences are a reference to films such as Juno." Maybe it could be re-reworded to indicate that PP's film references Juno, which has a hand-drawn ... and a director who's the son of a famous ....146.122.71.68 12:33, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
My point was that if you have to say "such as" then it's not a reference to a specific thing and it shouldn't be mentioned. I have seen this reasoning used to remove items on this wiki before, usually when people couldn't agree on what was being referenced (one that sticks out in my memory was the line "Can I get a witness?" in the retirement). Now I wasn't the one who changed it to Shortbus, but the fact that someone did sort of proves my point. LikeAsItself 02:42, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Nitpicky?

DeFender just reverted the following fact because "it's a cartoon and this is too nitpicky."

*It's odd that Strong Bad didn't notice the desktop before, since he would have had to gone in earlier to set up his e-mail account.

I, however, contend that Remarks are for being nitpicky, and that's why this isn't a goof. Plus, it's something I didn't immediately notice when I was watching the email. Thoughts? --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 19:26, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

He's never had to set up an email client before, it always just works from the program strongbad_email.exe which seems to be a client hard-coded to strong bad's email. So that same program is now an icon on the GUI. no problem. — Defender1031*Talk 19:30, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Or it's possible The Cheat sets it up for him, or Bubs, or whoever has any sort of experience with technology. The point is, though, most likely outside of cartoons Strong Bad would have had to get on the computer to set up his account, and therefore I think it's remarkable. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 19:41, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
As i just said, no he wouldn't, he'd just have had to install that program, which doesn't necessarily require accessing the computer (perhaps it comes standard with the operating system) — Defender1031*Talk 19:43, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
In a similar vein, it seems strange that Strong Bad would be surprised that the desktop is "actual graphics" when he's obviously familiar with the "24-bit .png with alpha channel." -ReverendTed 20:52, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Or he could have heard a bunch of nerds arguing about it, like on Gif/Gif. The fact remains that unless it's shown in the cartoon, we can't know what Strong Bad saw of didn't. It's a cartoon - Stuff doesn't have to make sense to the tiniest detail. Trivia can be nitpicky about facts that are really absurd, not if some character looked at something or not. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 21:00, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Possible Fun Fact?

Which category should this one go under (I was thinking either Explanations or Real-World References)? Or is it completely unnecessary?

  • The car shown in the intro to Pom Pom's indie film is actually a 2007-2008 Nissan Maxima.
    • The car also got 21 City/28 Highway MPG in 2007 and 19 City/25 Highway MPG in 2008.

Homestarmy Commando1

It's interesting, but the second bullet shouldn't go on the page. Put it in "Explanations," I think. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 02:53, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, I thought the second bullet should be kept, since the intro shows the car as having 18 MPG. But we should wait for some more opinions. Homestarmy Commando1

I would phrase it this way:

  • The car shown in the intro to Pom Pom's indie film is actually a 2007-2008 Nissan Maxima, which actually got 19 City/25 Highway MPG in 2008.

Slightly cleaner than two bullet points, and still as ludicrusly matter-of-fact as hrwiki tends to be. 65.191.103.62 20:51, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Good Idea, but I'm still unsure as to what category it should go under. Any suggestions?

city (comma) state title reference

The title "city (comma) state" has its punctuation mark spelled out, similar to Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, and I was not sure whether or not this would be a valid reference. Gsu eagle 31049 17:59, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Dead of space = Dead space?

Does anyone think the movie poster saying "In the dead of space, dealing with aliens is the easiest part of the voyage" is a reference to the video game, Dead space? I mean, its in space, its a voyage, it has aliens..

Indie Cred

There actually exists (sort of) something called "indie cred." It's much like "street cred," only for indie filmmakers. You can attach the word "cred" to the end of any sort of noun, really, and it's possible that it makes sense. ~Foxby

Dangersque Irony

Should it be noted that Dangersque is an independent film, making Strong Bad a total hypocrite? I mean, for the live performance of "Alright 4 2Nite", that Limozeen guy even described it as an independent film. Tojo940 05:42, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

What do you mean, "independent film"? Dangersque had explosions! Babes! Helicopter chases! Cardboard boxes and dumpsters! Shark pools and pie factories! Independent films are boring and very personal, while indie films spend millions just to look like they spent few hundred thousands. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 15:04, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
Maybe speaking generally, E.L. Cool, but according to Wikipedia, "an independent film, or indie film, is a film that is produced outside of any major film studio." Since the Dangersque movies had no such involvement, they are technically independent films, albeit very ambitious ones. Anyway, this is already noted in the article under Remarks. – The Chort 16:07, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
