Revision as of 22:40, 22 January 2011

Ding! The Paper is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

Should this be under some directory? like...thingies or something? Just a thought. -- AgentSeethroo 14:48, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)

That's a good question. I know we'll have something like "Inside Jokes", where most the stuff form the "InsideJokes" page will go. Then there's going to be the stuff that was in the Rejects. They aren't going to be "Rejects", and they will all have their own page, but yeah, we'll have to have a catagory or something for them. The Paper... I don't know. I know there's a "Characters" catagory, and a "Main Characters" category for "The Twelve", but I can't think of anything right now. -- Tom 15:15, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)
This could sound kinda silly, but we can put the paper in a section called "Integral Elements", along with SB's comp. and stuff like that, like things that aren't characters or settings, but are integral to each SBEmail or whatever. Whatcha think? -- AgentSeethroo 15:53, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)
Hmm... Is this where Coach Z's "Z" would go? How about Strong Mad's singlet? Homestar's hat? The stool? The get up noise? Strong Bad's shoe? Marzipan's hair? Where do we draw the line? Arg. -- Tom 16:30, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)
Well, you pose a good question. I think the "Integral Elements" is a good idea for the important stuff like compy and whatnot...for the unimportant, I think maybe we can have a "Misc." or "Odds'n'Ends" type thing...but you're right...a line has to be drawn. Arg indeed. -- AgentSeethroo 20:51, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)

DVD

Apparently there are some more The Paper oddities in the Strong Bad DVD. I don't own the DVD but could someone who does please update this page to reflect this? ~Hobo|talk

  • I have the DVD. The paper says "The End" on there. ---DumDe

Gender

More of an interesting observation, but does that mean that The Printer is Female (invisibility) and The Paper is Male (animal)? Wow...

Nope, see the last bullet.

  • The Paper and the printer are therefore separate identities, as The Paper is male and the printer is female. I'm guessing The Paper is the printer's son.

I removed the recently-added information above as it simply refers to information stated in previous 'oddity' bullets. The part about guessing that The Paper is the printer's son is merely speculation and if it were reworded somehow to be more professional I think it could return to the article. --The Paper 19:24, 9 Dec 2004 (MST)

What's with all this stuff about assigning the inanimate objects gender? I mean, we call boats "she" but we don't say they're actually female. It could just be a figure of speech (although the ending to animal implies that The Paper is intelligent, which means it may actually have a gender.)

Well, we're not talking about a normal world here... with humans... so the inanimate objects could have genders. -- Asploder

Besides, since when is the paper an inanimate object? It seems to have a mind of its own. — talk Bubsty edits 18:13, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

Does not seem to have a printer?

Stong Band has a printer in the the processing room! --VolatileChemical 01:21, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Stong Band? Is that some sort of elastic cord maker? icon_mrgreen.gif Joking, of course... Yes, you are right about the printer in that old looping clip. But this still doesn't answer or shed any light on how the printer can somehow "invert" itself (because it nearly always prints downward) or how it seems to manifest itself out of the clear blue skies in several toons and emails. I don't think we'll ever know. Well, perhaps once we see Strong Bad Email #173, if the montage inkjet printer upgrade story can be trusted. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 03:58, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Preeeow

What is the canon spelling of The Paper's sound effect? This page says it's "preeeow", but Strong Bad types it as "Prreeow" in haircut, and on the note at the end of part-time job he spells it "preeeeow". Which is it?? -Polly 08:39, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I think you might be reading too far into it. Given that even TBC can't keep it consistent, let's just say that it has a variable number of Rs (at least 1) and Es (at least 2) and leave it at that. --Jay (Talk) 19:28, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Font?

What is the font used on The Paper?

Fonts. --Jay (Talk) 21:25, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

TBC refer to The Paper as a character.

In the animal DVD commentary, TBC refer to The Paper as a character. Shouldn't this be considered official, as all the consensus in the world shouldn't override the creator's opinions, right? (I have a feeling I'm treading on thin ice, here...) - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

Well, it's not a real, bona fide character because it's too much of a thing. It's not an true item because it has too much personality. That's why it's listed as a pseudocharacter, which we have defined as something that "for some reason or another treated as real people by the other characters" (or TBC, you could probably add to the end of that). — It's dot com 01:21, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
It's actually surprising how willing the citizens of Free Country, USA are to naming and assigning personality to inatimate objects... - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

The Paper seems to be self-aware so I don't think it should really be a pseudo character. Strong Sader

Save the Paper?

The Paper will NOT be replaced in email 173. It says that Strong Bad will get a new PRINTER. Paper can still come out of it, right? --Marth 99

That's true, but TBC probably won't replace The Paper because of a small comment made in an email. teeeffoh! 18:59, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
By the way, if you read carefully, it says that The Paper stuck around until email 173, meaning that (according to montage) once email 173 comes along, it's gone. Has Matt? (talk) 19:01, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

the process

At the end of the process, the camera zooms out from the Compy after the Paper comes down, and we can still see the Paper sitting above the Compy. Is that the only time we see the Paper not occupying the whole top of the screen?

There's also the ending of extra plug. --DorianGray

Built-in printer

In redesign, were they trying to imply that The Paper actually comes out of a built-in printer that is part of Strong Bad's computers? This might make sense with the Tandy and Compy, but the Lappy has a flat-screen monitor just like The Cheat's. — It's dot com 18:16, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

The way I interpreted it was that Strong Bad thought The Cheat's computer was somehow crippled by the fact that it didn't have the "back half" that Tangerine Dreams did. SB most likely just doesn't understand how a computer that's all-monitor like The Cheat's new iMac can still function as a whole computer. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 19:39, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Haven't all of Strong Bad's computers been "all-monitor"? I think he was more confused with how his monitor is so thin. —Zelinda 01:04, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Good point. Still, he may have thought something was missing from The Cheat's computer because of the physical difference. And actually, the Lappy is less "all-monitor" than the Tandy and Compy, since most people understand that the actual computer part of a laptop is in the same box as the keyboard, rather than in with the monitor. It was never clear where the actual computer resided in the previous two units. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 01:14, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
I think that his comment definitely implies that The Paper is built in to his computers. It definitely explains why we can never actually see The Paper, but when we see the back of the Lappy in isp, there doesn't appear to be anywhere for paper to come out.· · T2|Things 16:11, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
