The Field?

I know it's a little early on to be worrying about this, but I've gone ahead and labeled the place where SB, SM and The Cheat are as The Field, although I'm doubting that it is. New page? Label it "A Field" without linking? Two cents? —FireBird|Talk 15:39, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Well, it looks like the field to me, just without bushes. The entire art style in this toon is a naturally a little off. I think it's the field, but I wouldn't care if you called it something different. - Joshua 15:48, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm for keeping it as The Field.-KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

Easter Eggs?

Since we haven't gotten the direct Flash file yet, I can't use the seek bar to find Easter eggs. By the looks of it, I don't think there are any, but our good annonymous IP who crated the page apparently says there is ([{Strong Sad]] (Eater egg)). Any other way? —FireBird|Talk 15:56, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

A Revelation for Homestar?

I'm not sure if this is important, but is this the first time that someone has mentioned to Homestar (or Homestar has admitted to himself) that he doesn't have arms? I know Strong Bad has mentioned his armlessness before, but always when alone and not within earshot of Homestar himself. I dunno if this counts as an important bit of data or not, but I just wanted to throw it out. Rocketlex 16:21, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

I think that this is an important fact too. I'm going to STUFF it.--KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r) 20:25, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
In fingers, it was implied that Homestar knows about his situation. — It's dot com 20:58, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
Actually, the 'implied' part in fingers is part of Strongbad's imagination no? (as shown by the dream bubbles and such). So it'd be little more then Strongbad again saying to himself that Homestar is harmless. Ghilz 22:44, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Actually, my outlook on Homestar's "arms" are that they are obviously invisible. He carries things all the time. In fact, sometimes it is questionable about the invisible arms since in The Show, he can hold the microphone, hold the cards, and shuffle them at the same time. But all these prove that he has invisible arms.--Martin925 20:44, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

It almost seems that he can telekinetically move anything within a set range, as characters walking by (or crowding aroud) him never seem to run into his arms.=KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
I agree, it'd also explain Old Timey Homestar has not only no arms, but no shoulder sockets for his invisible arms to be linked to. Ghilz 22:44, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
It could be that he is blissfully unaware of the fact that he has "no arms", much like he is unaware of the fact that his pants are invisible (or nonexistent.) 24.138.54.79 01:51, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
I too have always thought telekinesis. Invisible arms is a tad elaborate, and telekinesis would explain how he is able to hold a microphone, hold the cards, and shuffle the cards all at the same time. It's not like Homestar has a really powerful mind and thus is able to use telekinesis, it's just his way of making up for having no arms. Though, alternately, I like the idea that because Homestar is so unaware of his lack of arms, he is able to pick things up without having arms, i.e., he "forgets" his lack of arms and acts like he can pick things up, and it works for some reason. ("How did you walk through that wall?" "I was able to because I forgot to use my laws of physics.") --Der Pepper
Well, one argument could be that Homestar is actually a super-genius, but is always using his brainpower to maintain telekinesis and is thus inable to function intelligably.
I have always seen two (2) possable answers to this. one (1) is that he has (at least) four (4) invisable arms. two (2) is that he has limited telikenisis. I also think that this has always been implied.-Anonomys 23:49, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

I think telikenisis because of the whole holding more things than possible and, and I exclamate this not to hurt anyones fealings, his shirt clearly has no holes for any invisible arms to come out of!.--20X6 GEM

Don't be a Hater

After listening twice, I think the lyrics actually say "Strong Bad paints Marzipan", as opposed to "hates". I distinctly hear an N sound in there. This would also match up well with origins, a previous time when Strong Bad spray painted Marzipan. What say the rest of you? --DorianGray

I hear an "h" sound in the beginning. It's hard to tell, though. - Joshua 17:52, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
Both make perfect since, so it's really just a matter of listening. On that note, I do hear an "h" sound, as well. —FireBird|Talk 17:55, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
I hear paint. We could make a footnote, like we did with Strong Bad is in Jail Cartoon.-KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
Ugh, not another footnote. Let's get some more opinions here before even thinking about going down that road. I heard "hates," by the way. — It's dot com 20:59, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
As all the other lyrics match up exactly with the illustrations, "paints" seems more plausible.-KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

I heard it three times, it is very faint, but I am pretty sure I heard hates. I am 100% sure that they did not say paint, as the "p" sound was nowhere to be heard. --Stux 01:24, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

I hear "hates" too. Besides, that makes more sense considering that Strong Bad is spraying black paint over a picture of Marzipan, as in defacing it. "Paints" just doesn't make any sense whatsoever to me.--Spanky The Dolphin 23:32, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Tricked Out Van

I figured that the van in the music video could reference the tricked out van Strong Bad mentioned in the Strong Bad is in Jail Cartoon. What do you think? -- TaranchulaVamp15 12:17, 17 Oct 2005

That certainly sounds plausible to me. --DorianGray

Song visuals

Why is it, that with things such as Experimental Film and rock opera, we split the music from the visuals, but here we put 'em all in the transcript? Is there some sort of standard at all? Thunderbird 17:26, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

It's because those two have several minutes of nothing but visuals and lyrics. This one is pretty short so the visuals can be insite the transcript. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 17:29, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, we generally split them for large ones. There's no set standard, though. - Joshua 17:53, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm not really sure I like it that way. I think we should do it one way or the other for consistency. —FireBird|Talk 17:55, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
Well, the visuals usually get in the way of simply reading the song, but they are important for a knowledge base that collects as much info as possible. I think it's fine the way it is, but if we had to choose one way or the other, I'd go with a seperate page for visuals. - Joshua 20:03, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Dooj?

Anyone know what the rocket laucher "Dooj" is about?

It could just be a sound effect.-KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
I think "dooj" may be a variant (or the actual spelling of) the word "doosh" Strong Bad uses occasionally. (See Random Toon and TROGDOR!) --DorianGray

Of Snake Ladies, Nagas, and Warcraft

Snake/Human hybrids are, of course, not constrained to Warcraft and date back to Indian and Asian mythology. In fact, the name Naga isn't even constrained to Warcraft and denotes a wide variety of snake like mythical creatures in southern Asia. I propose the dropping of that particular reference and letting the Cheat's snake lady just be a product of his imagination rather than yet another spurious reference.

I agree. I've never even heard of Warcraft, but I have heard of nagas before. --DorianGray

I agree, I have heard of Warcraft, but I also remember them in Final Fantasy games before Warcraft...Hmmm, FFII and III were SNES games as was Mario Paint...reference? Probably not.--Slackerboy 22:38, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

My guess is that they got the reference from all those video games you guys mentioned. It might be more of a referene to the genre in general. --Stux 01:25, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Bad Guy!

Considering this is a toon described "Going back to our roots", Isn't the entire basis of the toon is a reference to how StrongBad was more of a villian earlier on in the series? Maybe? 20X6 GEM P.S. Isn't StrongBad bouncing on his Head a reference to the SBEmail funny? 20X6 GEM

Yeah—reasserting his identity now that he's become the vulnerable, personable, lovable scamp who charmed his way into the hearts of a nation. No, seriously, you're right. (Not that it should go in the article, but good observation.) —AbdiViklas 23:20, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
I thought about that, but he really doesn't act like a villain. - Joshua 23:18, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
I totally agree with that, 20X6 GEM. I was about to leave a similar note here. — It's dot com 02:27, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
Possible, but I'm thinking it is props to the first Homestar Runner cartoon ever made, which was done in Mario Paint, as has already been referencecd. Even though Strong Bad's vilinitude is not what it used to be, he's still the antagonist, and this short doesn't have the feel of, say, Marshmallow's Last Stand. --B 18:21, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Richey Edwards reference?

"The For Real Deal"-tattoo may be a reference to Richey Edwards, and the infamous interview he did with NME journalist Steve Lamacq. Lamacq asked Edwards if he and his band Manic Street Preachers were serious about their music. Edwards tried to convince Lamacq by carving "4-real" into his forearm.

I agree...it's a pretty unmistakable reference, in my opinion. I'm going to put it on the STUFF page. Trey56 12:59, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Sing us a Song

Anyone have an idea where the song comes from? It sounds incredibly familiar, but I can't place it. --B 18:24, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Also, I want to know if the intro music is related to the Trogdor game—specifically those little upward-swooping beepy notes (I know, you'd expect a better description from a musician)? —AbdiViklas 18:48, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
Close, but I actually think it's more from the Teen Girl Squad theme. The notes in the trogdor game are FGA, but the notes in this and the TGS theme are GABC. Yes, I have perfect pitch. No, I'm not bragging... —TrumpetMan202 00:28, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Actually, I'm not hearing a G here, just ABC. But I just went and played TROGDOR!, and yes, it's certainly a different pitch set. The synthesizer patch seems to be the same, though, which is probably what I and whoever added it to the article were thinking of, so I added that as a concession. —AbdiViklas 02:16, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

Pipe or Bat

In the transcript, it says Strong Bad hits the muffler with a bat (it is brown). Later, in the Inside references, it is called a pipe (which has been used before. Which is it? My vote is pipe, given the inside reference. Others? --B 18:29, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

It's so pixellated it's hard to tell, even zoomed in, but:
  1. although I can't say for sure it's perfectly cylindrical (i.e. not tapered like a bat), I think it would be even harder to say that it's tapered;
  2. if it is a bat, it has some kind of dealie at the end, like lines painted on it. I think those are supposed to be pipe threads.
  3. Strong Bad's holding it right in the middle (although that isn't very efficient no matter what it is). —AbdiViklas 18:45, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
I'd say it's a pipe for three reasons: A. a pipe/muffler combo has been used before, 2. a bat would be hard to dent a muffler with, and D. the reasons AbdiViklas already said. --DorianGray
I put bat in the transcript because it was brown and I didn't look at it that closely. A pipe seems reasonable too though. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 19:31, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Good enough for me. I'd change it, but I'll leave that to Homestar Coder out of respect for the work. Please understand this, this was just a clarification, not a challenge! --B 04:30, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Not Made With MarioPaint

I have to say, that I've always thought the work by the Brothers Chaps seems to consistently allude to the idea that one must not take things at their surface value. The Cheat and Strong Bad are always pulling scams, and they're educational to those who pull the wool over the eyes of their victims. You watch something like "Dangeresque" and it's as if you're being given a handbook to the Man Behind the Curtain.

If you ask me, the concept that they would bother to do something like this in MarioPaint instead of using more modern technology to simulate the effect...c'mon. This was not made with MarioPaint. At some point, one has to recognize that these guys are using fairly sophisticated technology, and their claims about how hard it is to animate Strong Bad's head from left to right as he reads the text (as if that were the "hard part") are jokes in-and-of themselves. Wake up, people. That's the point. These guys aren't gods, they're just very witty.

Nope annony. it is simple to make a movie with Mario Paint. I have made a few myself. You simply need to have patience. Tons and tons of paitiance. It is simple to transfer scenes onto a computer with MP. The only thing they did that didn't involve MP is the vocals. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 02:02, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
There are some giveaways. For example, the mouth movements aren't matched to the words... they're just set on a loop. Definitely MP. — It's dot com 02:20, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Exactly. That kinda set it in stone. So there's some proof it was made with Mario Paint. Trust me. I've made movies using that. And what the crap are you even talking about anyways? Of course they're not "Gods". I mean, c'mon, A. Contributor! I mean, maybe they just felt like doin' somthing different. A slide on the wild side. 20X6 GEM P.S. And pardon for copying that joke, sort of. Done and Done. *The Paper Noise.* 20X6 GEM

Well, not THAT different. H*R was a Mario Paint cartoon before it was Flash. :p --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 07:48, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
Seriously, even though it isn't as hard to work with flash as people say it is, it is still difficult nonetheless. Although TBC naturally deserves no divine status, the fact remains that they are skilled in what they do. They use only about 3 loop animations in their average flashes, and many things they do are impossible to accomplish using tweening. Their flashes are astoundingly long and well-quality for one-week projects, as it takes the average flash artist on the internet about two years to make a decent ten-minute flash. Give TBC a break!
Actually, it takes TBC less than a day for most 'toons according to the Bros themselves, and what do you mean by "give them a break"? Why was this 'toon not made with MarioPaint, specifically? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 19:58, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
You claim that this toon was not made with Mario Paint, but you're not saying why. You're just talking about other things which have nothing to do with your original claim. And why are you telling us to "give them a break", when you're the one who thinks they are lying? 62.252.128.17 19:25, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Intro music is a reference to Teen Girl Squad

I watched the toon again today, and I noticed a strong resemblance between the intro music to this toon and the main theme music for Teen Girl Squad. If you listen closely to the bass notes, they seem to match the TGS theme, and the giveaway is the set of trills at the end, before Strong Mad appears - they are exactly the same (except for the instrument used). - KieferSkunk 20:59, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

A Glowy Box!

The "Glowy Box" Strong Mad refers to may be a reference to the box that Strong Bad makes dance and prance in haircut

Revelation?

This is the first time that Homestar's armlessness has been mentioned to him. Strong Bad has talked about it before, but only when not near Homestar.

VERDICT: This item was declined as written (however, it was the impetus for finally making a running gag article on the Lack of Visible Arms), 6–0. The votes and arguments have been moved to HRWiki:STUFF/Archive/Strong Bad is a Bad Guy.

Pont-REER!

Are the scenes where Strong Bad is spinning on his head a reference to funny? I immeadiately thought of that email when I saw this. Post your thoughts on this here. Has Matt? 23:25, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Probably not. Perhaps you should STUFF it. — talk Bubsty edits 23:28, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
STRONG MAD: IT'S POSSIBLE!!
{{KieferSkunk agrees. This probably should be STUFF'd.} -- 23:40, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
After watching the toon again, I think not. It's just the reciprical of him spinning a few moments before. I don't however feel the confident about my answer on this one. I probably wouldn't vote for awhile. I R F 23:47, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
Heimstern Läufer, if you see this conversation, I have this to say: "Heh." :) I think Strong Bad is just spinning randomly... so much that I deleted something similar to this yesterday. I don't think every case where something is vaguely similar is a reference. Sometimes, they're just independently alike. — It's dot com 00:11, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

So, Dot com, this is about two weeks late, but I'll still say, "Heh, yourself." Heimstern Läufer 18:26, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

About what SM says…

I don't hear "YOU DON'T HAVE AR—", I hear "YOU DON'T HAVE A HEART!" as a response to SB. Should this be STUFF'd? Stongbah Preeow! 16:21, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

First of all, no, it shouldn't be STUFF'd because it isn't a question about a fun fact. Second, there aren't two words after "have". Third, "arms" makes perfect sense in the context, whereas "heart" does not. — It's dot com 19:02, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
