Would anyone be willing to convert Stinkoman 20X6 to an SMC file? I'm aware this would be a LOT of work to turn a flash game into a working SNES ROM, but it would be cool to play this on an SNES emulator and avoid some of the flash bugs (and frame lag).

The way I fix it is to play the .swf file and put the game in low quality, you will have to do this every time you go to a new level (I think 9 is already in low), but it makes the framerate as good as that of the GameCube, so you can only imagine unless you try it. - [[User:Volbeat A The Cheat|Volbeat A The Cheat]] 09:02, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

I simply cannot get the game to work here on OS X. == Current Level Editing Status ==

-

-
Has anyone made anymore headway into level editing? I've got the whole thing working locally, and can even edit the XML files to make simple changes, however I do not have the time nor experience to make a level editor.

-

-
Additionally, in the XML files, the <D> field seems to just be an object count, but what could <sT> be?

-

-
I think some serious inspection of the SWF file and the code is needed before we can do full-featured levels. especially for cT types.

-

-
Also trying to figure out how to launch the level editor - I see the entire class. Is there a Flash debugger where I can call a function/object at will?

-

-
:I just finished a level editor, after all kind'sa studying that <sT> stuff.  I'll try to get it out soon.  [[User:Ed smildE|<font face="tw cen mt">E<small>D</small>S<small>MILDE</small></font>]]

*** The boss has a pretty predictable pattern, so he's pretty easy to beat.  The only problem is that he takes so many hits to kill that if you make a few stupid mistakes, you're screwed.

-
*The one thing that really got me on this one was level 6.2's ending. Level 5.2 was hard enough with the several Downtants, but the platform that you need to reach in order to beat 6.2 was unbelievably difficult. If you didn't time it just right, you were dead. It took me several tries to get it. I didn't find anything else so difficult about level 6.2, I was able to get to the end-area with 3 lives and full health usually, after all the losses on the end platform. In the end I finally beat it. But then again, level 7 won't be any easier... unless it's something like level 3. --SBEmail22

I don't want to start a flame war (even though I probably will), but I just have to say that I'm really starting to hate this game.  Aside from being pointlessly difficult, it doesn't really capture the fun that Megaman (and games of that era) had.  For one, Megaman was about killing enemies with cool weapons, not hopping around on platforms and avoiding indestructible saw blades.  Sure, Megaman had that, but it was never the case that the best strategy was to avoid enemies (which seems to be the case in Stinkoman).  And what's up with the fact that you inevitably have to go completely out of your way in order to get a power pill, which means that after you're done backtracking your power is most likely right back where you started.  The storyline is completely flat, and seems to revolve around the characters sitting at home, and then leaving home to go somewhere, and just generally ignoring the storyline.  It's probably just me, but after suffering though 6.1 I have no desire to continue on to 6.2.  Granted, they're working with limited media, but still... If it wasn't too much of a hassle (since a lot of the difficulty has to do with jumping), it would be nice to have different difficulty levels.  As it stands, this game is too ''easy'' for me, but I know people who have trouble with the first level.  I guess it just depends on what you're into... I happen to love the game (as much as one can love a game, anyway).

== Quick Tidbit For Level 6.2 ==

-
Lets say you make it all the way to the bluetant and 3-prong... near the end...

-
choice a) go up and avoid two 3-prongs, then dodge ligtning & two saws...

-
choice b) kill the bluetant, manage up some difficult evaporating clouds, face a bluetant, lightning & two 3-prongs as if you made it past choice a.

-

-
Tidbit: if you're any good at this level, and you can make it up choice A unscratched... then do not kill the power-crunch bluetant (or if you do, then don't get the power crunch)... go up choice A, make it to the bluetant... if you kill the bluetant, unharmed, then awesome! Only two lightning bolts and two 3-prongs to go!!! However, if you want to beat the boss, you'll need all your life... say you make a mistake and lose two lives...

-

-
backtrack to where choice Bbrings you... right before the 2 bolts and prongs... go down the clouds, and you'll have a powercrunch awaiting for you... then go back up the EVs, because that's the easiest, least deadly... you don't have to worry about that bluetant, and just go through the bolts and prongs again... do it good, full life... beat the boss... kick the mouse... and see the same TV that Stinkoman has...

-

-
yeah how to do it:

-
1) the cloud starts coming at you, when he does it, and on his first land, run imeediately to teh first place he lands for what reason you ask:? so when hekeeps going you can shoot him, only shoot at his sun glasses , its seeming to be the only place that harms him, keep this up, You will then have some lightning shoot after the 2nd time, run just one distance away from the edge of the screen ( so the tornado doesnt get two shots on you )whichever closer to avoid it. Now if you keep this up for three times, the tornado will shoot around 5, just stay close to him to avoid them. then run away , say to the left, and he will land one place, run to that spot and keep on shooting. I just developed this strategy, and woudl you believe it, a Mouse.. a mouse was causing all of that - thats got you wanting to play even more to see if im telling the truth!

== Magic Pockets? ==

-

Did anybody else think that the level 6 boss was reminiscent of the game Magic Pockets? The boss is a giant whirlwind that bounces and shoots bubbles from its top. In the first stage of Magic Pockets, the character attacks by throwing whirlwinds that bounce. If the fire button is held long enough, the whirlwinds are large and spit smaller whirlwinds from their tops. (There might be a powerup needed as well, I'll check up on it)

-

That sounds great, but the tornado reminds me of the mouse with sunglasses boss in super mario advance who throws bob-ombs at you. Um.. it's probably a Magic Pockets ref, though......

Quoting from the page "Liekand could be a reference to Super Mario Bros. 2 where the boss of the 4th level was a flame wearing sunglasses called "Fryguy", along with the fat mouse refering to the first boss, "Mouser". The bubble sprite used for Liekand's attack looks like the same sprite used for Wart's attack in Super Mario Bros. 2.". It seems like the character's drawing on multiple references already. [edit] ZSNES Project

Would anyone be willing to convert Stinkoman 20X6 to an SMC file? I'm aware this would be a LOT of work to turn a flash game into a working SNES ROM, but it would be cool to play this on an SNES emulator and avoid some of the flash bugs (and frame lag).

  • I would be willing, since I ouldn't mind having a ROM for my SNES emulator. I would just need to know how. I'm not very good when it comes to these sorts of things. --Darklinkskywalker 20:17, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Your powers of perception astound me. I'm glad someone noticed, or everyone would be confused, thinking it worked, but not seeing the game. Perhaps you could use those powers of perception to see that this is an old post, and then see that it says "v3" in the url, but according to the article it's up to v4 now. --phlip TC 12:31, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Extremely Slow Frame Rate

Hi, I'm having a problem on all of the computers (3) in my house when trying to play this great game. Whenever I do anything that causes the level to scroll, the frame rate drops unbelievably low and everything becomes very slow and draggy. At the very beginning of Level 1.1 I don't have this problem for the first 2 seconds of playing (before I move far enough to make the scenery follow), and then when I come to a complete halt I can jump again without it slowing down. Anyone have a remedy for this, or are my computers just crappy?

I have the same problem. —woddfellow2|? 19:53, 4 May 2005 (UTC)
I'm not convinced that this isn't intentional. It's very likely that the Brother's Chaps were trying to mimic the NES's inability to quickly draw frames. It's already obvious that this is a Mega Man clone. Maybe they're pushing it further than that. --NFITC1
I've also had a slow frame rate when walking, but it's not that bad, is it? If it is, then yes, your computer is crappy. Kvb 19:30, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
*sigh* No, your computer isn't crappy, they ALL do that. It's not an imitation either, Flash is actually that slow. Also when the meteors crash, they aren't emulating anything! Flash is just that slow!
How do I fix it? —woddfellow2|? 01:31, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Ask someone to port it to PC? It's.. not really a problem, ActionScript is just a slow language.
It's often just caused becuase you either have slow browser or your browser is slow. Or you don't have much memory or you need to get a better internet service provider. It's happened to me before too. Have you tried on Mac OS X? They're quite a bit faster. --Darklinkskywalker 20:21, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Hey, I tried it on my mac and it was still slow. What version of os x are you using, what browser, and what type of mac? I am using a g3 350 with Jaguar, 224mb of ram and safari. I am getting a g4 400 soon, would that be strong enough? 70.240.87.24 20:36, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)
No, memory should be fine and it's certainly not because of a slow ISP. Flash runs right off the computer. EDSMILDE

The way I fix it is to play the .swf file and put the game in low quality, you will have to do this every time you go to a new level (I think 9 is already in low), but it makes the framerate as good as that of the GameCube, so you can only imagine unless you try it. - Volbeat A The Cheat 09:02, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

It's already low-quality in every non-boss level... Though viewing the swf is good 'cause you can shrink the window, which helps. --phlip TC 11:09, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
I see... cause it's like that for me, or maybe it's just like that for level 3... - Volbeat A The Cheat 11:44, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Like Zero Wing in 2 Ways

This game reminds me of Zero Wing in two ways. 1. Translating errors (fake in this game, obviously) 2. Long levels with no check points. I can't get past the first level in either game. Every time you die, no matter how far you are in the level, you go back to the beginning. And you can't save in the middle either. --152.163.101.8 14:59, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)

Actually, in Zerowing when you die, it'll bring you to a midpoint, if you've gotten that far. I've beaten the entire game so I should know. =P --nickshorts

Indeed... more levels seem an inevitability (why else do they have scroll buttons in the "CONTINUTE" menu?). As for the difficulty... well, let's just say it reflects the Mega Man series in more ways than one. ;) --Shadow Hog 16:16, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)

You guys have way too much free time. I can beat Level 1-1 In 10 mins and lose 2 lives!! --kerrek slaya 21:04, 15 May 2005 (UTC)

I timed 139 measures of music in 5.2 a minute ago. I can't say how that compares with your score since I timed it in measures of music, not seconds. (I and noticed that I shaved about 3 measures of music taking the bottom path when the top has the huge conveyor belt, even when jumping against the belt and taking a shortcut to the bottom, and even though the bottom path has a short wait time to get the stupid platform within jumping distance. Less fall time, no ladders. I also took the bottom path when it split into four tiers - less fall time, and there's a forward-moving conveyor belt that doesn't lead to a spike along the way.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 08:03, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

I cut it down to 2:02! And this time I made a bunch of silly mistakes I didn't make the first! How? Well, I played it in .swf mode and made the screen small (but still big enough that I could see it all!) Scrolling the screen in full-size mode seems to create some minor slowdown (for me), so removing that slowdown severely cut my time (I technically was still counting measures of music (116) and just did the math from there. The music's speed didn't seem to be affected no matter what I did.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 08:54, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
That's funny since I didn't even realize there was a bottom path (where that long conveyer belt is at the top path) until I just played it through again. The bottom choice later on (the 4 level option) is the one I take, since it can be very quick. You don't even need to stop if you time it right (don't stop for the bendini sister, just jump at the right time and it'll go right behind you). I managed to do 1:43 1:39 1:37, but that was just a quick try. I guess it's easier when you're focusing on one section without having to worry about the next.
I'm still surprised you find the lower path quicker than the long conveyer belt. You are jumping across the belt and then taking a long jump past the Piedmonts (I think that's what they're called, anyway) instead of "facing" them, right? You should be able to go non-stop past the whole section which makes it very quick.
To take the top path, you have to climb up a ladder, which takes time (especially with 1-Up's lousy climbing skills. Then, you have to jump against the conveyor belt, and if the little shield guys are placed wrong, you have to spend extra effort dodging them. Yes, I jump/fall past the Piedmonts, but it doesn't save as much time as you might think. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 07:58, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I wish I could somehow record this and show you how I play through the level. There are very few places where I have to stop. Specifically, by the time I reach the long conveyer belt (I don't know if timing plays into it at all), the "little shield guys" are always placed perfectly so I don't have to really bother dodging them. Just continuous jumping. Taking the bottom path I have to stop and wait and, surprisingly, that area is really tough for me.
"CamStudio" is good, if you can find it... I think it got bought out by Macromedia and you have to pay for it now. I still have the free version though and the EULA doesn't say anything about the company collapsing so I think it's still legal for me to give it to you... just say the word if you want it. --phlip TC 23:44, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Am I the only one...

...who can't get the plain .SWF working? I can play the game (beat it not too long ago, good game, can't wait for the expansion packs-of-sorts), but only using the standard link. I can't play it online or offline using just the .SWF file. Firefox stays perpetually on "Load it up". IE6 gets farther than that, as it goes to a black screen after that and never gets out. So... anyone else? --Shadow Hog 19:26, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)

I couldn't get the .swf file loading on my computer. It would just stay a blank black screen. The regular game worked fine, though. --Joshua 20:15, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)

It's working for me in IE, but in Firefox it just stays on the loading screen. edit: actually, offline it doesn't work on either. --DG 11:31, 22 Mar 2005 (MST) I think I know why it won't work offline: The game is so big it depends on multiple files to play, like the object library. I've been trying to find out names for single levels. So far, no luck. unknown

Read the topic in this page with "XML" as its header. It has links to all the levels (save 4.x). Just slap 'em in a folder called "levelData" in the same directory as the game itself, and it SHOULD work. --Shadow Hog 22:33, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

You forgot the flash files for the cutscenes and the stinkomanual.

[edit] Is the game meant to...

Drop you into a giant hole at the beginning of Level 1.1? The game loads up, but as soon as I click play game, I get dropped into a pit until I die 3 times. Any ideas, or is it whatever glitched up virus for me? --Venusy 02:36, 22 Mar 2005

I hear on Fark that it depends on your browser. Try switching to another. The Lyrical Wondermind 19:39, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)
This happened to me too, while running IE. I tried Mozilla and it worked. Aurora Szalinski 19:40, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)
Thank you, but annoyingly enough, I can't install any alternative browser. My administrator believes that they let in viruses. --Venusy 02:52, 22 Mar 2005
I had the same problem, except for me the bug happened in Opera but it worked in IE. --JZ
Found the problem (for me at least), in Version 1.1, there's a little notice saying "Flash 7 Required". I only have Flash 6. I wonder why TBC didn't go for the full screen message, a la Duck Guardian. --Venusy 06:30, 22 Mar 2005
Well, that's probably what your problem is indeed... but specifically, I'm guessing the game isn't loading the XML files from the leveldata folder, hence nothing happens. --Shadow Hog 09:35, 23 Mar 2005 (MST)

Flash 6 and under can't read the xml files. They programmed the game to run on flash 7 because the style of xml they are using is too advanced so it has to be read by flash 7. --Darklinkskywalker 20:30, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Music

If anyone could find the game's music files, I'd be much obliged. That was my favorite part. The Lyrical Wondermind 19:47, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)

New! I have a swf decompiler and can easily get the music off them, email me at sportyman27@hotmail.com and ask me for the file you want - Quinn

Same here, I was listening to it whilst working on assignments, but I found that if you open up the game and start, leave it for about half an hour without doing anything, the music just stops and doesn't come back unless you lose a life. M.J

The first level's music is top-notch if extremely Sonic. Not as good as Duck Guardian, mind.

Actually, it strikes me as much more like - surprise! - Mega Man tunes, particularly the opening stage of MMVII. --Shadow Hog 09:32, 23 Mar 2005 (MST)
Yeah... Both of those tunes are awesome, and I was listening to a MM7 midi file right before I played it. I thought, "Hey, that's MM music!" --thatkidsam 15:35, 27 Mar 2005 (MST)

I'm pretty sure online Flash games don't have "music files" It's been my experience that Flash usually packs all its resources (sound, bmps) into the final SWF.

VGMusic has some MIDIs in their New Files section, FYI. --Shadow Hog 13:06, 26 Mar 2005 (MST)
  • Holy crap, they added to Videlectrix.
  • Yes, but they only have the first 2 level's music. I wish they had more...

[edit] NYU Demo

At the NYU Talk - 1 Mar 2005 they showed an awesome demo to this, and as I recall, I think the sporks from 2.2 were originally in 1.1 and 1.2. The first two levels that TBC made were 1.1 and 3.1.--Homeschool Winner 21:28, 22 Mar 2005 (MST)

[edit] JoyToKey (This is a little OT)

Anyone with a joypad needs to download JoyToKey. It's especially important for this game; really adds to the feel. Total, man. --70.25.9.49 23:00, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)

[edit] Capsules

  • The health-restoring pills are a reference to the Strong Bad E-Mail time capsule.
    • They are also a reference to the Scrolling Shooter Games Menu, where you can get similar capsules to change your ship.

Tons of games have capsules and it's doubtful this is an inside reference. Didn't the original Megaman hae capsules? Granted they looked different, but I don't think this is a reference to time capsule, and I think it's a coincidence that the games menu also has capsules. What's next, someone chimes in with "It may be a reference to Dr. Mario"? Sorry, I'm over-analytical so I'll keep it since others may not agree with me on this. If anyone else does though, maybe we should take this to STUFF. --70.25.9.49 23:07, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)

      • The NES Mega Man games had no such things... I don't think it's a Dr. Mario reference either, considering the Doc isn't too "retro". I think it's more likely a "time capsule" reference...
Although I'm not sure about the games menu reference anymore, I do believe it's a reference to time capsule because:
  • They are identical looking
  • In time capsule, the pill gave him an energy boost.

I'm pretty confident that it's a time capsule reference myself. It DOES look exactly the same, and Stinkoman interacted with that capsule too. Don't name individual video games, though. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 08:13, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] About the Gas stoves...

What's the big deal? I feel that Homestar Runner's world is on a different plane of reality. It obviouslty is, but in saying on the official Wiki page that gas stoves are supposed to be obsolete by 20X6? What is 20X6? 2016? Gas is most likely to run out in 2025 in OUR world. In Homestar's world, there may be abundant reserves of oil. Have you ever seen anyone drive a car(for real) in Free Country, USA? They may well use mainly solar power. Any oil lamps in Free Country? well, I just thought it necessary to comment. Thanks for reading it.

--geoguy91 00:43, 22 Mar 2005 (MST)

20X6 refers to the megaman games where the dates would be 200X or 20XX where X was a variable for any year. --68.253.238.103 01:20, 5 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Wrong, actually it's a reference to Metroid, which took place in 20X5. Same idea, different game. --Shadow Hog 01:28, 5 Jul 2005 (UTC)

[edit] CONTINUTE?

Early on I added a comment about the CONTINUTE item in the main menu being misspelled possibly intentionally, but it was removed in the revision http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=Stinkoman_20X6&diff=56256&oldid=56255. This still exists in Version 1.1. I guess this item was removed because it was too obvious, given that the poor translation is already specified? Just wondering.

[edit] this and peasant's quest.

in peasant's quest, it seems the cookies expire after you close your browser window.

is there a way to tweak the cookie to not die, or is it supposed to keep active and i just need to adjust cookie settings?

  • Must be your browser settings. Works fine for me. --JZ
  • Not really. On my computer, I can save a Peasant's Quest game for months, no matter how screwy it really is. Amy Whifflepoof 15:36, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Continute not working?

I got all the way to level 2.2 before I got a Game Over, but the continute button wouldn't work. Is there a problem wth my browser, or maybe a new version of Flash Player I need to get?

I've had the same problem. Anyone know why the continue function isn't working?

"Continue" remains greyed-out for me as well. My browser's set to accept all cookies from homestarrunner.com, and I can't see anything in my Flash prefs about denying local storage (it's set to allow homestarrunner.com to store 100K of data currently). For reference, I'm running this on Linux, Mozilla 1.7.5, and Flash 7.0.25. sekhmet 14:05, 23 Mar 2005 (MST)

  • Ah, seems that v1.3 has fixed the problems. My system is now allowing me to access the continue menu. sekhmet 12:52, 24 Mar 2005 (MST)

' Happened to me too. My guess is the versoin change from 1.0 to 1.1 --70.25.9.49 16:14, 23 Mar 2005 (MST)

Here's a key point: The continute button only becomes available after you've beaten the game regularly. That had me thrown off for a while...until I beat it!

  • Seems to be fixed in v1.3.
    • Indeed it does. Works for me now. sekhmet 12:52, 24 Mar 2005 (MST)

[edit] Glitch

Stinkoman stand on air!

I found a little glitch in the game, just wanted to share :) It's in Level 1.1, you'll probably recognize the spot. I'm guessing the box for the ledge on the right side passes through the wall.

  • Looks like it. I've noticed that before. Looks pretty funny actually.
  • Well, its because stinkoman is actually standing on the land on the other side because on these games you can stand with one pixel of the shoe on the land and the rest in the air. Try it on other lands.
  • Hey, the game is now apparently v1.2 I think this glitch has been fixed.
Nope, it's still there. I don't think they'll bother fixing it, it doesn't make any real difference IMO.
  • This is so stupid! I got all the way to level 2.2, and got stuck in that place you can't escape (I never died out), so I refreshed the page, and I looked at the continue button, only to find it didn't work! I am so fed up with this! Someone better find some way to fix this, 'cause I'm not playiong through all that again! Stinkoman moves way too slow to have to go through that excruciatingly tempoed sidescrolling nightmare again! Can someone please fix this, or find a solution, that doesn't make you have to play the game all over again? Much thanks in advance.
    • You must have a slow computer, no name. The game isn't really as annoying on fast ones, where it goes smooth. Anyway, I have no idea what place you are talking about. I don't know any traps in level 2.2. (Maybe you should look at the walkthrough?)--Joshua 20:07, 29 Mar 2005 (MST)
    • I'd fix it, but I don't have the flash or the website, soooo... That's weird
