Higher quality sounds?
Most of these sound effects seem to be ripped from the toons themselves. Surely there are higher quality versions of at least some of these sound effects available online in SFX libraries? If we could find and substitute these audio clipe, I'm sure it'd be much better. Ppk01 18:23, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey there is this sound effect I keep hearing.  It is mostly used in the older toons (eg Marshmallow's Last Stand).  It's like a sound of someone doing a flip.  I don't know what to call it, and I don't know where ALL it is found in.  Here's a fast way to hear the sfx: Play the game Bronco Trolleys.  Click on the orange slice.  That's the sound I'm talking about.  Please help,

Powering Up the Secret Eating
Hi all, I am bringing up to discussion that I made in response to RickTommy's merging of Secret Eating and Powering Up.  While yes, the two sounds are very similar, they are not the exact same sound.  To me, they are not the same tone (frequency?) and do not follow the same 'pattern' so to speak (with regards to how they shift their tones).  Since I'm not a music/sound expert I can't fully explain using fancy words, but given how picky this wiki is about details, I don't think these warrant being called "the same".  Thoughts? --Stux 20:02, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
 +
:Agreed. The "secret eating" one is slower and more warbly. (I too don't have the vocabulary to discuss this properly.) Either way, they're not the same sound. 11:44, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

Is there a reason there's a category called "Sound Effects" that includes pages for Geddy and... a different one for everything else? Why not have Geddy on Sound Effects? --notstrongorbad 04:27, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)

I agree. One page completely covers this, and the other is just the Geddup Noise. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 04:29, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Anybody mind if this is delorted? Rogue Leader / (my talk) 04:36, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)

No, I don't mind. But I'd like to say one thing about Sound Effects, as I pioneered the whole article. I always had the idea that it would just be for sound effects that were used in different fashions. For example, using Homsar's walking noise for another, unrelated sound. I didn't include sounds that repeat themselves in the same way (i.e., the wrong answer buzzer on Main Page 19 is the same sound as in geddup noise, but it's used exactly the same way). I didn't include such things on the list, since it wouldn't flow as well with the columns (specifically the 'Also Used By' column, since it's being used by the same thing), but maybe we could include a second list of sounds that are reused in the same fashion, like the Geddup Noise. I just felt the need to explain myself... --DorianGray
I dohnknow, Dorian; if we did that, and were consistent about it, we'd have to document every sfx used on the site. There (in the words of the Great Understater) are many. Your page serves a valuable purpose, providing a way to talk about sfx that have multiple meanings. Except that, in a sense, Geddy's just been given a second meaning: a personified one in a addition to a functional one. I mean, that's why he's the only sfx with its own page. Perhaps if he were acknowledged and linked to in some way from your page, and then this category were deleted? --notstrongorbad 05:44, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Nope, I don't see anything wrong with adding a line to the beginning, something like 'The most consistant and reused sound is The Geddup Noise'. And you raise a good point about the 'every sound' bit... I don't fancy watching every single toon, email, game, main page, and everything else, and making SFX notes (not to mention sounds that could be in DVD-exclusive features that I wouldn't be able to access). Almost all of the ones I put on the list came from searching the Wiki for 'same sound'. So, yeah, putting a link to Geddy in my article seems a good way to go, as he's the most personified, repeated, and somewhat overlooked sound of them all. --DorianGray
I added this category because I saw the need to link these sound effects together, but didn't see how the geddup noise could be added to the page. The solution presented seems good. --Stux 06:19, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Then go for it. Me, I'm gonna move this to the Sound Effects talk page, as I like the explanation I gave behind my page. I didn't write an essay just to be lost to the ages. It'll also explain why the Geddup Noise is on the page, and gives people a place to start if they wish to contest it. --DorianGray

Is there any way...

Is there any way we could, say record these and upload them so that people could hear them? --smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 23:21, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

I'm sure there's a way... Like the Quote of the Week, you thinking? I'm sure it's entirely possible... And I'm sure sound effects fall under fair use... They don't seem to be as unique as, say, dialogue clips. --DorianGray
Something like QoW, put them up on a mirror...hmm. I'm gonna see if I can't record some. smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 23:30, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Go right ahead. I'd try it myself, if not for two things. One, my recording equipment is a little subpar. And two, I don't know how to upload sound files to the internet. --DorianGray
Well, I think you save it as an ogg file and upload it like an image, but I'm not sure. I do have a whole bunch of sound effects, though, including the sound that the Heavy Lourde makes falling on Homsar when you mouse over games on his main page. That I've heard often. smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 00:37, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
If you don't get to upload them, feel free to send them to me via email. I'd like a listen. --DorianGray

I uploaded Image:Lurking_horrors.ogg, so feel free to take a listen. Is the quality/length/volume okay? smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 20:47, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

I would, except I have NO idea what you do with a OGG file. Media Player and QuickTime don't recognise it. --DorianGray
I would download and install Audacity, then save the OGG to your computer and open it in Audacity. There are other programs out there, and Audacity only works for Windows. But since you mentioned Media Player, I am pretty sure you have Windows. So, try that. smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 20:53, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
Ooh... That's neat. It works. I like it. Further positive comments. -DorianGray

Strong Bad's Dry cough

I think Strong Bad's dry cough is different than Sickly Sam disappearing. I will have evidence shortly. smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 21:45, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

Proof is here. I think the disappear is more of a "poof" and the cough is more of a "cough". Which version, if any, should we keep? smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 21:50, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

Whichever one is also the dry meal sound. --DorianGray

Light globes

Merge?

Okay, check out User:Smileyface11945/Sound Effects, if you haven't already. Do I have enough to merge that page into this one? smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 00:07, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

I think we should wait until we have all of them uploaded. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 00:11, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

I bet that shan't take long, though. Behold the new version: Sound Effects II: A Dorian/Smileyface Project. Now with OGG additives. --DorianGray
I like that title! Anyways, how about now? The two that read "not availiable" are that way because I can't find a long enough unobstructed occurrence of the sound. Also, I might re-do L'il SB's drill, since it has slight music in the backround, same as SB's helicopter. Suggestions? smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 00:51, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
I think it's good. I'm sure we can get to those last two later. And I applaud your skills for doing all those. --DorianGray

Well?

Okay, how's that? smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 13:50, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Suggestion

I think we should split this into "Re-used sound effects" and "Commonly used sound effects" on one page. Reason: some sound effects are very common, but always used for the same thing, example: the sound effect when the heavy lourde drops on Homsar, the same one in Homestar Presents: Presents when Homestar hits the bottom of the stairs. smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 22:40, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

I'm going to work on that at my own replica page until it's finished. smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 00:10, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

Geddy

Wouldn't The Paper's sound be the most used sound effect? smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 00:29, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

Actually, yeah. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 00:30, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

So...it still says Geddup Noise. To change or not to change, that is the question. smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 00:31, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

Another re-used sound location?

Ok, I didn't want to just add this... I'm still new here, and wanted to check and make sure it wasn't just me, but I think the sound when the power goes off in Coach Z's locker room in Homestar Presents: Presents is the same as the Tandy 400 before it explodes/Virused universe shutting down/Lappy shutting off, etc. I'd heard it before, and just watched the cartoon again to make sure I wasn't imagining it. Sounds the same to me... anyone? -YK 10:31, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Add it! I'll double-check. Dun feel you need my permission just coz this page is My Pride And Joy. =) --DorianGray
Yep. It's very faint, and obscured by this ZZT! noise--which may be another one reused from the broken Tandy's wire sparking--but it's there. Anyone disputes this, they can take it here. I have keen ears. --DorianGray
I see someone already added it, but... woo! My first contribution! Nice to know I wasn't hearing things. =P -YK 22:26, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
I added it myself, to be precise. Nice work. Your ears may be even keener than mine (and that's saying something, lemme tell ya). --DorianGray

Another one I just noticed: There's a cheering crowd at the end of mascot. I think it's the same as the one in Marshmallow's Last Stand, lady...ing, etc. Anyone wanna double check that? -YK 02:23, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Yep, confirmed. Same cheer. Good ears! --DorianGray
Thanks. I guess I'm good at finding sounds. =P I'll post again if I come across any others. -YK 02:36, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
I look forward to it. Thanks for helping out my special page. =) --DorianGray

Found another one (which I already added): When Pom Pom's family portrait appears in Pom Pom, Too, it makes the same sound as Eh! Steve jumping off screen. Just a note. -YK 00:09, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Ogg? why not mp3?

Why does it have to be Ogg? I could convert them all to MP3 or wav and re-upload them, i just didn't know if there was a specific reason they're ogg.--Collin 04:26, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

I think ogg is space-saving. I dunno. I can't play them anyways, even if I wanted to. I just don't feel like it. Bluebry 04:27, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Not quite sure. I think it's coz MP3s can't upload here. --DorianGray
How about wav? wma? asf? qt au aiff ram...anything.. ogg doesn't play in normal players. i'm just saying. it plays in like winamp and abstract players but it would be useful to put it in a format windows media player, quicktime, and real player can understand since they are pretty much the most common players.--Collin 04:36, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Media_help_(Ogg) - you can tewak WMP and others to play OGGs. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 04:38, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
well its true, but would it not be more convinient for it to just work without doing anything? does anyone know for sure that mp3s will not upload?--Collin 04:41, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I'm told WMP can play oggs already, in the most recent releases. As I run W98 I can't say. A good feature of ogg is that it's patent-free. That means the format won't suddenly be a problem in the future. Wikipedia has a link at every sound file to direct the user to help. Perhaps someone could write a template that can be added to pages so they know how to use oggs? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 04:48, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
A relavent discussion to why OGGs as opposed to any other file can be found here, back when the OGGs were first used (which occurred for the first time on this page). --DorianGray
Well i just tried to open up the OGG in WMP 10 (newest version as far as i know), and it played fine but it gave me an error message first. "The selected file has an extension not recognized by windows media player . . . Do you want the player to try to play the file?" If you click yes it plays. But i have huge codec packs on my computer that are supposed to make it play everything. so i don't know if the average user on the average computer would have the software and codecs on hand to play the file. I didn't think of patent and copyrights though, good call. --Collin 05:13, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
ogg it is.. i guess the best thing now is to write a template explaining how to use them or something. i'm really a n00b here so i don't know what to do but i'd be willing to help if someone could tell me what to do :P --Collin 05:18, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Check the link above I gave. it will solve the issue. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 05:18, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

It's essentially the same reason we prefer PNGs to GIFs. Vorbis compresses better than MP3 (better quality at the same bitrate), and it doesn't have any patent issues. Of course, the Fraunhofer Institute isn't as likely to go chasing up MP3 users as much as Unisys did with GIFs, but it's still a good thing for a free project to avoid. Besides, despite OGG Vorbis not being a household name like MP3 is, it is still widely supported among sound players - most decent (non-Microsoft) players, like Winamp, support it out of the box. --phlip TC 08:11, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Take a look here to see how Wikipedia handles this. Maybe we should do similar? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:54, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Great job, Venusy. Looks and works wonderful. Now, how to find all ogg files and change their links? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:20, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Look, Ogg doesn't work in anything except real player, and I don't like real player. Can't we put it in something that works in quicktime? Sewiously!--Jnelson09 19:07, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Install this QT plugin, and you'll find that you can play the Ogg files in QuickTime. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 19:11, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Justification

Is there some particular reason everything on this page is centered? Does anyone else think that makes it hard to read? — It's dot com 21:35, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

I dunno, man. But I think it makes it easier to read, in actuality. --DorianGray
I think all the tables are like this. Halloween Costumes, Character Evolution. If it's more than 3 lines, it can be a little tough to read, but I'm supposing the centering's part of a template. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:41, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
The tables used for the music video visuals aren't centered. --DorianGray

Yeah, I'm replacing low quality sounds with higher ones right now.--Mrcontesty 18:30, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
I'm not certain that's a good idea. While I'm not personally opposed to the idea of replacing the Homestar Runner-ripped versions of these sounds with high-quality ones, it seems to detract from the "authenticity" of it, per se. Does anyone else have any input on this? MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 18:38, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

Help Me Please

Hey there is this sound effect I keep hearing. It is mostly used in the older toons (eg Marshmallow's Last Stand). It's like a sound of someone doing a flip. I don't know what to call it, and I don't know where ALL it is found in. Here's a fast way to hear the sfx: Play the game Bronco Trolleys. Click on the orange slice. That's the sound I'm talking about. Please help, TheYellowDart(t/c)

I think it's listed on this page as "slide whistle" or something like that. --DorianGray
Holy crap! I swear that wasn't there before! Ah, I guess it is late, though. I get L00PY in the wee hours of the night. TheYellowDart(t/c)
A little loopiness now and then
Will keep you from going 'round the bend.

Yeah, don't worry about it. We'll just call you Loopy from now on ;-) Loafing 07:05, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Fine with me. My mind is going. I can feel it. Really. It tickles. EDIT: Loafing, you are the meanie! (check the recent changes to remember what you said) :PTheYellowDart(t/c)

Record without using a mike!

The location of the sound recorder. In Spanish, y'all!

For those perople who don't have a microphone and want to contribute, follow this simple, step, by step instructions. I make recording, FUN!

1. Open the "Sound Recorder"
2. Double click on the speaker icon near the PC's clock
3. Click on Options, then properties.
4. Click on the circle that reads "Recording"
5. In the list that appears at the bottom, check the box labeled "Stereo Mix"
6. Click Ok
7. Open a H*R toon (The one you want to take the audio file from)
8. (Optional) Use a seekbar to pause right after the audio plays and to play to erm... play the audio! Duh!
9. Press the record button on the Sound recorder
10. Press "Stop" anytime to stop recording and save it.

TA DA! Now, to turn it into OGG and/or to edit it, use Nero SoundTrax. Darkangel

Ok, I did all that, and the recorder just records nothing. Do you need additional equipment? Dr. Clash 21:22, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Works just fine for me! Loafing 21:22, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Ok, i got it to work, but quick question: how hight do you want the A) Volume bar and B) the stereo bar in the volume panels?I tried recording the "Strong Bad is a wrestleman" song in theme song, but it came out really scratchy and lound. Any tips? Dr. Clash 21:30, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
If you use Audacity, then you can see in real-time if it's too loud or not: adjust the volume so that the soundwave doesn't touch the edge of the box. I think you'll have to adjust it manually every time you record something, as the sound levels will be different. Loafing 21:35, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
I tried to do it, but the's one problem - there is no "Stereo Mix" option. 75.31.215.53 02:23, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
How do you change it back? It's not working!!! TheThin 21:45, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Organization

Hey, I was wondering, what kind of order is there to these sound effects? Sounds like there is none. I think these should be listed in alphabetical order. Anyone object? --Stux 04:54, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree with Stux, we should put 'em in either alphabetical order, chronogical order (the first being the "suuuuuuck" from MLS), or by categories (SBemails, Shorts, etc.). I prefer A-Z. Darkangel Get offa me!
Was this ever done? I still can't seem to identify an organization in the article. -132.183.138.33 21:32, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Ppfft sound

You might get what this means. For those of you who don't, it's just a squishy, pooty sound that is sometimes made when certain objects appear on screen. Now why isn't that sound included? It's been used multiple times.

So find out where and include it. --DorianGray 20:33, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
I believe that's called "Splat."" Discopwahty1975 19:29, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

bip!

The Bip! sound was only used in Blubbos Commercial when it transitions from the Isosceles Fish sandwich to the ingredients going through the cascade of water. Scenes cutting through white is already noted here. That'sBupkis! 18:10, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

I think you misunderstand how this page is set up. The description is for what contexts each effect is used to depict, but we still link each toon in which it appears. — Defender1031*Talk 18:37, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Typing

Could we get a sound effect of that?

Needed Sounds?

Not a real user here, but I figured I'd ask. Out of all these sounds that have happened once or more, where's the lighter's ignite sound?--71.9.128.58 21:34, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

Is the sound overlayed over the toon? If you hear it and can still hear it if you quickly move away in a flash seek bar, then it's an overlayed sound; This article is about sounds overlayed in Flash due to their common usage and sounds integrated in aren't listed. - Catjaz63 23:21, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
I do not believe that that was ever stated anywhere as a requirement of this page, merely that sounds are reused. — Defender1031*Talk 09:36, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Powering Up the Secret Eating

Hi all, I am bringing up to discussion this edit that I made in response to RickTommy's merging of Secret Eating and Powering Up.

Agreed. The "secret eating" one is slower and more warbly. (I too don't have the vocabulary to discuss this properly.) Either way, they're not the same sound. — Defender1031*Talk 11:44, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
