I am aware that Marvin the Martian and his home planet of Mars were used as metaphors for the Soviets in several Cold War era Warner Bros. cartoons. Red

So, there's a possibility that this alien is actually named "Red". Both The Homestar Runner and Mary calls him "Red", but both do so while calling him a communist. So, maybe it's just a repeated communist joke.

On the other hand, I tend to think that if anyone ever refers to him again, they will refer to him as "Red", not "The Alien", or anything else. If that's a reasonable assumption, then "Red" is the name that the Homestar Runner characters have given him and we should too.

If you have an opinion on the matter, please weigh in on whether this article should stay under its current name or move to Red. Thanks, Trey56 07:13, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

I think the communist nickname is more likely, and also that Mary didn't call him "Red" (like the annony fixed). --DorianGray
Good point about Mary; I had misheard that. Well, that strongly weakens the case for the name change. Thanks, Trey56 07:17, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm going to settle on either. I would like to propose, though, that we move this to Old-Timey Alien to help differentiate between this and that other alien. —BazookaJoe 07:20, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
I second that. Loafing 20:14, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
Well, I guess that answers that. Trey56 18:24, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Parody of the Soviet Union?

It seems to me that he exists as part of the 1936 world as a joke about the Soviet Union, the type of which were prominent in the 30s in the United States. Things like expensive bread and long lines - as well as constantly being called red - are references to the Soviet Union and perceptions of its totalitarian brand of Communism. Discuss?

Yeah, I think that's mentioned somewhere. Methinks here. Bluebry 03:04, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, but might it belong in his character page? Since it's mentioned every time he is, it seems like it's not just a feature of that toon but of the character as a whole. (Same user as above, 10:21 12/19/06)
Those jokes were more prominent in the 1950s after World War II was over and the Cold War was revving up. In the 1930s, coming out of the Great Depression, communism was very appealing to many Americans. Rumble Red as he stands now is an inexcusable anachronism.— Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 02:40, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Old Timey Homsar, Nebulon?

Perhaps he's OT Homsar...

  • I highly doubt that. First of all, he makes sense when he talks, second, Homsar's not an alien, and third there is no 20X6 counterpart of homsar. I think that the alien is an old version of Nebulon. TheYellowDart(t/c)

Yeah, I think he's based on Nebulon. No one seems to like him, not even Old-Timey Marzipan. --Jnelson09 03:24, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

I dunno...there's only one real similarity. Which is that they're both aliens. Some differences are speech and looks. Bluebry 03:26, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
There is another connection: No one likes him. --Jnelson09 20:58, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I removed the following sentence from the article:

Some fans believe he may be the Old-Timey version of Nebulon, another alien, who is also not very well-liked.

and added a link to Nebulon in the "See also" section. There's nothing in the Homestar Runner body of work that suggests that Rumble Red is actually the OT version of Nebulon, so for now we shouldn't claim there's a connection in the article. Trey56 22:32, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Great Gazoo

He reminds me of the Great Gazoo from the Flintstones. SaltyTalk! 04:05, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

...You know, he really does. Think it's a reference? Bluebry 04:11, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
No, he doesn't have the same clothes, and he has more eyes and.... pincers. He just makes me think of him. SaltyTalk! 04:29, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
What about the teleportain stuff and the kinda whiny annoying voice? Didn't the Great Gazoo do/have that? Bluebry 04:35, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Just don't say it too loud, or someone will say he's Old Timey Bozar... --DorianGray
I completely agree. There's not doubt that his mannerisms are just like Great Gazoo. I think we should classify this as a reference.--204.52.215.97 15:39, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
I was instantly reminded of him as well.

Bozar

Is he in any relations to Bozar? Retromaniac 03:09, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Not at all. —BazookaJoe 03:11, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Destination Earth

He reminds me of the protagonist from the 1950's propoganda cartoon Destination Earth Google Video Link Wikipedia link

Mainly because of the "We don't have (resource) on my planet" lines --Nommie 12:40, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Wow, I watched that. I wasn't surprised to find at the end a message something like, "Presented by the National Oil Institute" ;) Crazy stuff, but I don't think it's close enough for us to say that the similarity is intentional. Interesting link, though :) Trey56 15:31, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
It seems to be almost identical to TBC's discussion in the 4 branches commentary--Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 20:03, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Blinking

Red seems to be the most frequent blinker on the site. His eyes are like Homestar Runner's, they blink when the movie stops, is paused, or stops to continue loading the rest of the toon.--ONESTOP 22:23, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes, the characters what blink regularly have their blink animation stored in the "Sprites" section of the Flash file, so it continues to play in a loop, even when the actual Flash is paused. Did you also notice his eyes blink in sequence? --DorianGray 22:36, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Move The Alien Redirect

Per The Knights Who Say Ni's edit summary— You're right, i should have gotten a consensus. I did mean to cut that out, the 3DS has a character limit so I needed to cut things out to put stuff in, then I was going to edit the evolution section to put it back. (I had to even write the whole thing down because it doesn't have a copy and paste function). Sorry, my summaries and some edits have been sloppy lately, due to the fact that I switched from editing on a crappy ipad to a crappier DS without a stylus (which really hurts) all because I'm too lazy to use a desktop computer and would rather type 10 words a minute than not lie in bed. Thank you for consistently covering for me w/out anger, I would give you a barnstar if I ever finish them. I assure you my contributary time will come this summer when I can finally make new pages and may get a laptop (if I'm not still doing my freaking thesis). COLLEGE IS SOO EXPENSIVE THESE DAYS. As for the consensus, I think it should redirect to Nebulon as even the Aliens page considers him the main alien. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 19:38, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Marvin the Martian

However, I am unsure whether this inspired Rumble Red, as Marvin didn't debut until over a decade after 1936.
