What does "in progress" mean?

Folks, please note the {{inprogress}} template - Thunderbird is already working on the transcript, and rather than have him and everyone run into endless edit conflicts, please respect the template. K? Thanks. There are other sections we can work on. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 16:10, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey, only reason I messed with it was because of some sloppy edit undoing what Thunderbird started. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 16:28, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Understood. I'm waiting for the notice to go down to correct the image extension from PNG to png myself. It was right at one point... Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 16:32, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Meh. Whatever. It's not like it was pretty much my only chance to ever do an actual transcription of a visual toon. I'm sure I'll have another chance in another two years of wiking or so. Though it is darn annoying when you spend 10 minutes transcribing a toon, only to find out that one edit prior, somebody else already transcribed the same section, despite the in progress template. Maybe if I hadn't actually bothered to look for the Cardboard Marzipan precident, I would have got my revision out first. Oh well, I guess fastest transcriber wins, or something like that. Thunderbird 16:57, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Nobody wins when it's a contest in someone's mind. We're here to serve the HRWiki first, our pitiful little egos second, and slipshod work that has to be rewritten is less valuable to this user than a careful edit which lasts, all other things being equal. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 17:00, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Agreed, but I think there's some merit to combining the best elements of two edits as well if there are important differences between them. -Unknownwarrior33 20:28, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
True, but what we were discussing was the "screw-the-other-guy" push to be the one who can transcribe the toon (presumably to brag about it on a user page). That's a little different. Observing the {{inprogress}} is important, wouldn't you agree? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 20:31, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Oh, of course. What I meant was that if an edit conflict ends up happening, we should make the best of it. But I totally agree that the progress tag is important, and I apologize if I was confusing. -Unknownwarrior33 07:07, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Feeding ducks through a tube

This is probably a reference to force-feeding geese in order to harvest their livers for foie gras. This has come under attack by animal rights activists recently.

Yup, see No Hands On Deck!#Explanations. Thanks. -- Tom 17:51, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Added to main page?

lol the toon came out the morning but its not on any of the main pages but it iz in the toons menu iz this the 1st thime that's happened? Rabb-Talk!

It is on the main pages, all of them.... SaltyTalk! 18:23, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
I see "New Short Toon" in a red oval... clear your cache? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:24, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

But will it play in Chicago?

I question the relevance of the mention of Chicago's ban on foie gras. One, this toon is not made near Chicago; while it's a story on the news all over, it's not directly relevant to Atlanta. Two, they started this days ago, and the comment fits neatly into Marzipan's character even if there was no Chicago news today. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:39, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I didn't include that bit when I first wrote the fact because I didn't know about it. Heck, I didn't even know about foie gras until I did some research on tubes and ducks. When I saw the bit about the Chicago ban was added then removed and then re-added, I beefed it up a teesy bit, but I can probably take it or leave it. What do others think? -- Tom 18:50, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Just to clarify - the tube bit is clearly a reference to foie gras and the controversy. It's just the specific tie-in to today's news from Chicago that seems a stretch. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:53, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
I support this fact. TBC said in interviews that what they like most about doing cartoons on the internet, is that they can change stuff in the last minute. Maybe Marzi used to say something else, and was changed in light of the Chicago thing. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:56, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
I like it. csours 19:28, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
There was an article in our paper about the impending ban three weeks ago, so they could easily have heard about it by toonmaking time. If not a reference, I'd bet it's at least inspired by the ban.Trelawney
The Chicago story was on the front page of cnn.com this morning (possibly earlier too). Trey56 04:37, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not Rapaport

I swear, they do this because we debate this stuff. Remember the "Mr. Chechov" controversy? Well, here we are again.

Now that we have an egg showing the spelling of "Rappaport", is it a reference to Michael Rapaport at all, or just the play? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 19:41, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm still not convinced it's a reference to either of them - it seems too vague to be a reference to that play, and it can't be the actor because of the spelling. I'm on the fence (or maybe on the deck?) about it. -Unknownwarrior33 07:09, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Prescription

Strong Sad could have been talking about a contact lens prescription.

No, He meant his medication. He thought that he was just seeing this (not with his eyes, that is). Also, you don't wear contacts in bed. Loafing 20:52, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
And in case you needed anything more, it was established in funny that Strong Sad takes some kind of medication and that it can have some pretty powerful effects judging by his reaction to Strong Bad's behavior. PolarBoy 23:26, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Bubs Likes to Dance, Right?

When is the last time we have seen him dance?" Catman87

The moves we see are from Dancing Bubs, which is already noted. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:56, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
If I'm not mistaken, he was last seen dancing in disconnected, but it's not fun fact worthy, as he didn't say anything in the toon about not dancing in a while like Homestar did about melonade. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 16:42, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Deckeman or Duckie-man?

Deckeman sounds like the name the prince of town (flashback) gave Homestar which is Duckie-man or however you spell it. Should it be noted or am I thinking about this too much? Steve Talk Contributions 00:56, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Homestar's nickname in flashback was Duckshirt, not Duckieman. So no, I don't think it's a reference. - Image:TinySaturn2.GIF Saturn 02:33, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
The POT does say, "and the duckie-man is the winner!" But I still think this is a stretch because they don't sound that similar. Heimstern Läufer 02:37, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
It says "Deckeman" because that's how Homestar spells it earlier in the toon. -154.35.47.59 06:23, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Second Homestar?

OK, so the first time Homestar runs away from Cardboardzipan, is that a second Homestar under the table, saying "I've got to find me a new girlfriend?" Or, did he run...in a rather odd direction?

The second - this happens all the time; see Summer Short Shorts for an example of Strong Bad doing it. While we're here, the second possible "twin" Homestar sighting was in the stylized "hammer and saw" montage. I really can't see how that'd count, though. It's a montage, these things happen. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:35, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
These two instances aren't nearly so identical as you claim, Qermaq, though it's an instructive comparison. In Summer Short Shorts the "second" Strongbad breaks the third wall in the manner of a voice-over narrator of a documentary talking about footage in which he appears. So in that case, he's not really a "second" Strongbad but the same Strongbad speaking at a later date in the manner of an aside or DVD commentary. In No Hands On Deck!, the "second" Homestar appears in the same temporal sequence so he can make faux-Marzipan move in the manner of any puppeteer or ventriloquist. In this case, as with Strongbad in Summer Short Shorts, there isn't really a second Homestar. And in both cases the unexpected appearence of the same character has the effect of calling attention to the artificiality of what we're watching: a show, put on (often ineptly) for our entertainment, and not simply events in an alternate universe. So there is a meaningful similarity. But the effect is accomplished differently: as a reference to puppetry/ventriloquism, rather than a reference to documentaries/DVD commentary. Henebry 12:53, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Um, wrong toon. You are pretty clearly referring to keep cool. I think Qermaq is referring to the first short in Summer Short Shorts, where Strong Bad dashes across the room suddenly while encouraging The Cheat to eat "ONE MORE!" French fry. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 13:04, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Are you getting confused with keep cool? The Summer Short Shorts appearance is, I think, the "Did you hear the latest news?" line. I think Homestar annoying Strong Bad in Bug in Mouth Disease is a better example, or getting the powdered herbs and spices in Halloween Potion-ma-jig... In both, Homestar leaves in one direction and immediately enters from another. It's just, as DorianGray said, cartoon physics. --phlip TC 13:05, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I had always assumed it was the same Homestar, just moving around "behind the black" incredibly fast. Let's not forget how he zapped around from place to place in long pants either. —AbdiViklas 14:05, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Incase anyone's wondering, if u squeeze the window really narrow you can see behind the black frame and see that its just Homestar's head and it doesnt even move while he talks. Clearly that is not a twin of Homestar
In case the poster above checks this again: Things "behind the black" don't really count as "reality" within a cartoon; if they did we'd have people missing arms or legs 'n' stuff all the time. And by the way, a much easier way to check it out is with a Flash decompiler. —AbdiViklas 03:10, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
An even easier way is to install this Greasemonkey script and turn on the "show outside the frame" option... but no, it makes sense it's just Homestar's non-talking head... why bother to animate it it virtually noone (and noone who watches it properly) will see? --phlip TC 03:38, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
"turn on the "show outside the frame" option" - can you direct me to a help file on how to do that? I see pause, back and forth, in and out, and that's it. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:57, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Sitting girl thing.

What do you hear? Homestar's speech was never the crispest dialogue, but I hear sitting. It's been changed back and forth more than once today. Peoples? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 02:51, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Homestar's mouth movements accomodate two syllables. A very clear "sitting." This one's not even close. —BazookaJoe 03:03, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Frame 79-80 Look
Frame 82-83 girl
Frame 85 thing
Frame 87 a
Frame 89-91 cross
Frame 93 from
Frame 95-97 me
Where is there an extra mouth movement? Visual seems to be the right syllable count. We need to rely on audio here. When I play from frame 85, I can hear "ing", but not from frame 86. So 85 and 87 cannot possibly be "sit" and "ting".
And while last night "thing" sounded exactly right, I can this morning hear why "sitting" seems right ar well. This reminds me of all the times we've had "s"s turn up when they shouldn't - Flash audio seems to add a degree of sibilance to the sound, resulting in a very lisp-like rendition of what was said. Thing is, this is one of those things that's never going to be obvious, no matter how "not even close" one person declares it. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 09:16, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

for future debates, would it be a appropriate to link the transcript to this kind of discussion? also you ppl are all wrong. csours 05:28, 16 August 2006 (UTC) well except for qermaq and cool.
I heard "sitting", mainly because the /i/ sound seemed to have a stop in the middle - but pulling out the sound with a decompiler and isolating the word in Audacity, I see it's only one syllable long, and listening to it on its own sounds much more like "thing". So I vote for "thing". --phlip TC 06:10, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
I hear "sitting" (admittedly with a lisp). Heimstern Läufer 06:12, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

At first I heard "thing," but after going back and listening several times, I can hear both. I think "thing" is funnier but "sitting" makes more sense. Sounds like it would make a good qotw to me, though. So makey outy 06:20, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
Look at Image:Gewlthing.png, a breakdown of the speech, to complement my original post above. "Sitting" would be normally be pronounced /sɪtɪŋ/ (IPA), or, with Homestar's speech impediment, /sɪ.ɪŋ/, with just a stop between the /ɪ/s. There is no stop in the word, it's just /sɪŋ/, or /θɪŋ/, as Qermaq mentioned, /θ/ can mutate into /s/ under heavy MP3 compression. So, it's either "thing" or "sing", but not "sitting". --phlip TC 06:44, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
I agree with all that technical business, having done my own research and achieved similar results. When I listen to the word in the context of the toon itself, however, I still always hear "sitting". — It's dot com 11:53, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
Could it be that they skipped a syllable of mouth movements because the words are slurred together? I'm thinking it's possible that sitting across could have one jaw drop. After all, that's what we do when we speak that phrase. So if that is true, then "sitting" could very well be technically accounted for. Also, what audio medium are you guys using? Speakers or a headset? A headset is without argument the better way to listen to it. On this computer, I have speakers, and it's hard to tell what he's saying, but my headsets in a quiet room downstars give me an easier time. —BazookaJoe 13:06, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I've refused to take a position yet because I don't have the time at the moment to give it a fair trial. If someone else weighed in after two minutes of effort, I'd take their opinion with a grain of salt too. But for what it's worth, my cursory listening sounds like two syllables—specifically I hear two vowel sounds, a short and a long "i". —AbdiViklas 16:39, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I Can Be the Orphan

Is Coach Z's orphan impersination a reference to Oliver or another musical? Retromaniac 04:31, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Annie. As long as there is more than one major musical with an orphan (and there is) this would be TTATOT. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 05:07, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
But if the reason he brings up orphans is that so many musicals involve them, is THAT worth mentioning? After all, the two musicals mentioned here are very famous, so does anyone think they might have influenced the coach's idea? -Unknownwarrior33 07:11, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

"Where is my Mudder, dee doo," is an obvious reference to "Where is Love" in Oliver. The song is Oliver requesting someone to care for him like his mother would have, thus, "Where is my Mudder, dee doo". --71.35.152.110 17:46, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

FCUSA is not a reference to Free Country, USA. It is an initialism for it. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 09:17, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Might the acronym also be an allusion to the clothing retailer French Connection U.K. (which has a rather risqué acronym that they put on t-shirts and their signage)?

nails

Galvanized nails and Vulcanized nails have no articles at 'Kipedia. Neither Galvanised or Vulcanised I've put them on my watchlist so vandals beware. The population of nails have tripled in recent years. 216.106.180.138 13:18, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

However, it does have articles on galvanization and vulcanization (both linked to in the article, under Explanations)... and given what it actually is, I doubt 'kipedia would reccommend vulcanized nails... they wouldn't be particularly stable... --phlip TC 13:40, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

you get a vulcanized nail for finding that. well, as soon as Phlip finds some. csours 13:26, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
The Wikipedia article about nails mentions galvanized nails, citing them as "treated for resistance to corrosion and/or weather exposure", which would make them perfect for building a deck. Of course that means that either 'Kipedia is not the same thing as Wikipedia or Homestar is just talking out of his butt. Neither alternative is surprising, but it does mean that galvanized nails sound pretty legit. Also, NFITC, that link is a little misleading; It's an article about decks, not building them. PolarBoy 23:47, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
galvanized nails are good for building decks. only prablem is if you use acq treated lumber, and here is why: acq contains a pretty good amount of copper, and galvanized nails are coated with zinc. when zinc and copper meet across a solution, ie rainwater, electricity happens. it is a very tiny amount, but it is enough to eat the nails pretty quickly (from a building's pov). so they are legit, but still kind of funny and ignorant. csours 23:54, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Impossible

I put in the real life references, originally, though someone took it out, that the floating objects at the end are Escher-like impossible objects. Any reason why this shouldn't be there? Good ol' Escher. I didn't put it in, but he was an actual "Dutch Master" instead of a "Deutsch Master."

Uhh, why are they impossible objects? Just because you can't have floating wood? Thats hardly incongruent with the Homestar Runner universe. Stranger things have happened. I also can't place ANY resemblence between clouds surrounded with wood to MC Escher.
I took them out because the clouds are no impossible objects. I'm quite familiar with the works of Escher and Penrose, etc. Those clouds don't even try to be impossible in that sense. Sure, the two swirly bits point in different directions, but there is no indication that they are both supposed to sit flat on that connecting beam.  Loafing 01:54, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
In fact, the clouds are presumably in three dimensions, and not perfectly spheroid (there could easily be 'dents'). So, it's impossible to say whether or not the wood actually matches the contour of the clouds. And as it's physically impossible to line clouds with decking anyway, we must rite this off to cartoon physics anyhow. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:10, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

During the sliding transition scene, Homestar's mouth is closed. So if he was getting cut in mid-word, he was taking a little bit longer than usually between the "wick" and the "kee". - Joshua 03:34, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Is this a 10 year anniversary reference?

In a radio interview, Mike said:

... we were working in the Olympics one day in 1996, and, uh, had a day off, and were bored, and wanted to do something, so we, uh, created the, uh, characters and made a little book, and, uh, that was pretty much it. We went to Kinko's, and made about ten copies for our friends. And, uh, you know, a few years later, we, uh, we decided to make a website. Pretty much the rest is history.

This toon is 10 years and a few weeks from the '96 Olympics in Atlanta. So, could the "original" Homestar" appearance ("Marshmallows!") be a reference to the 10-year anniversary of the creation of Homestar Runner? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:23, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
