[edit] My Dawg

Since the way that everyone uses the word dog in the context of the sentences mentioned on this page is spelled dawg, I think that this page should be titled My Dawg instead, even if Homestar spelled it out as DOGE. Homestar-Winner (talk) 03:01, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

And also, regarding this edit summary, I think all of the transcripts are misspelled. Homestar-Winner (talk) 03:05, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

You may be right, but that's the slang way of spelling it, and we are a knowledge base. I say keep the current name. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 03:11, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Despite the fact Wikipedia says its "Dawg", I think urbandictionary.com will help us better determine the spelling (plus, I think we've used Urban Dictionary as a resource for slang before). It lists many entries of dog and dawg, both including definitions like "close friend". However, considering Homestar said "d-o-g-e", it's safe to assume he MEANT to say "d-o-g". Hmm. In this sense, I would use the spelling "dawg" and consider it appropriate, even for an encyclopedia. In fact, especially for an encyclopedia, as we want to be culturally accurate. While "dog" can correctly convey this, it's probably more communicative to use the "dawg" spelling, as it narrows the potential meanings down considerably, simplifying understanding. That's what language is for, ultimately. So I support "dawg". Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:56, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Are "dog" and "dawg" pronounced the same way, or are they different? --Trogga 21:22, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
I don't see a {{tbd}} on the page, but I say My Dawg. As far as pronunciation, I would say that "dawg" has an extended pronunciation, and the vowel sound is slightly different. More of an "ah-oh" transition rather than just "ah". That doesn't mean that's how one has to say it; that's just how I hear it said mostly. OptimisticFool 17:27, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Actually, your pronunciation thing makes a lot of sense. It might be a good idea to check the way it's pronounced in each toon listed, and if necessary, revise the transcript and the entries here. The article name should then follow the most common occurrence. BTW, this isn't a {{tbd}} issue but more of a commando {{rename}} thing! --Stux 18:35, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Oops, that's what I meant. {{rename}}. =] As far as the pronunciation goes in each of the toons, it's hard to say. Either way, as I mentioned before, "dawg" doesn't always have to be pronounced differently to be spelled differently. OptimisticFool 19:54, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Agree with the rename. It avoids the issues raised in the thread below. Also, if Homestar Runner et al started sprouting "Yo momma" jokes, we wouldn't call the inevitable article "Your mother", so we should use the same reasoning here. – The Chort 20:14, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
I dunno, I tend to agree with the reasoning that "dog" is the intended spelling simply because one wouldn't likely misspell "dawg" as "doge". Favor keeping it where it is. Heimstern Läufer 05:27, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
I removed the rename notice, on the one hand because this discussion fizzled out with no consensus to move the page, but primarily because I went to My dog intending to create the page myself (only one of the occurrences was linked to this page before today, so I didn't know it existed) and lo and behold the article was already here. — It's dot com 20:59, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] myths and legends

It's true that Homestar refers to Pom Pom as "my dog" in myths and legends. But I don't think this fits the scope of the article, which is about people using the phrase "my dog" as slang term of endearment. Here, Homestar is referring to Pom Pom as an actual dog, i.e., a four-legged domestic animal known scientifically as Canis lupus familiaris. So I don't think this belongs in the article. Heimstern Läufer 17:05, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

I misunderstood the scope of the article. From the perspective of "friend" it makes sense. --Stux 17:15, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
It's clearly in parody of this, so I readded it with special treatment. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 04:17, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
You really think it's a parody of the "my dog" joke? I've always assumed it was just Homestar being an idiot, and I really don't see any clear connection between these. I'm not going to re-remove it, at least not yet, but I'm still rather skeptical that it belongs on this page at all. Heimstern Läufer 05:26, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
I think it's a subtle and very dry reference, but a reference nonetheless. — It's dot com 21:02, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
