I thought that was obvious until it was changed to "chalk".

:That same thought struck me when I saw anonny's edit, which is why I decided not to revert it. Should it be a question of which makes the most sense in-universe or which character is better-known? The only difference between the two cases is that Crack Stuntman is considerably better-known than Guy Who Does the Bad Guy's Voice, who appears in an Easter egg for a few seconds. All-in-all, though, I'd probably agree that if we list a voice actor instead of his character once, we should do it in both places. {{User:SRMX12/sig}} 11:33, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Humidibot's Girlfriend

Humidibot has a bit of a lisp, so it's not that easy to tell exactly what he said (and same goes for his girlfriend). Do you hear Humidibess or Humidibeth? Personally I thought it was Humidibeth the whole time. Before I change the name or add a footnote, let's gauge the room. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 03:42, 2 April 2016 (UTC) because that's what a humidifier does.

I decided to listen to it again and it definitivinitiley sounds more like Humidibeth than Humidibess. I vote for Humidibeth. - Catjaz63 03:52, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Beth for certain. I bet she looks like a dude, too. --DorianGray 06:17, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
I turn my back for five seconds almost 86,400 seconds and it's already been changed. Huzzah. Huzzah, I say. On the mic... but not into the mic. Wrap your heads around that one. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 04:10, 3 April 2016 (UTC) The world's first glasses-wearing humidifier, eh DorianGray?
With Humidibot's lisp, I don't know how you can tell "for certain". My first thought was Humidibess myself (and that Humidibess/th may just be a figment of Humidibot's imagination, but that's beside the point.) But truth is? I don't really care much either way, unless it's ever put into writing or something. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 04:52, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
What we can say for sure is that it certainly isn't Julianne, which is what YouTube's auto-generated captions came up with. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 11:39, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
I hear Humidibess, too. I think maybe on Humidibot's page it could be mentioned that it's not totally clear, but then just one or the other can be used in actual article text (and I'm fine with that being the one I don't hear as strongly). 24.157.72.50 04:22, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
I heard Humidibess. I thought it sounded more like a lispy "s" than a "th" at the end. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 22:15, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
- I actually think it's Humidibette (pronounced Humidibet). Humidibot pronounces his own name with a lisp at the end, too, and anyway I think the point is that they are just carbon copies of each other and that only the tiniest difference when their names are said aloud sets them apart.--DupSauce 18:49, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
While that would make sense, I really don't hear that (although to be fair, I heard "Humidibeth" at first), and "bette" would be a pretty uncommon name. We'll see what everyone else says, but I'm for stickin' with the bess. Lira (talk) 19:58, 14 July 2016
Fair. I guess I would just add that I had always heard "Bette" and had never thought twice about it or even had other things occur to me. And Bette Midler is pretty famous.--DupSauce 20:32, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Seven-Inch Stretch?

Could the Sloshy and Larry Palaroncini messages about a split seven-inch be a reference to The King of Town and The Cheat cutting demos on the machine in 13.2? 108.17.131.71 06:14, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

I doubt it. Split seven-inches have been referenced in H*R numerous times before. That's sort of a stretch. Lira (talk) 14:04, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

How you guys found it?

Hey, something's been bugging me since yesterday morning. How did you guys find Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 17.2? I got up at 6:00 AM on April 1st and looked at the official site, and as far as I could see, the new toon wasn't linked to anywhere. The only way I could access it was to come to this wiki. I only just saw that it was added to the New Stuff menu today. Like right just now! So, how you diddat? Lira (talk) 14:25, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Sounds like a typical problem with Flash cashche. I think clearing your browser cache is a good idea, though I'm not particularly an expert. - Catjaz63 14:28, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
I cannot help myself clear my browser cache. I don't really even know what that means. Anyway, it appears on the New Stuff menu now. So it was all the time working for you guys? Huh. Let me ask: for you, are the main pages updated? For me, it still says "LAST UPDATED 11-10-15". I thought The Brothers Chaps just haven't updated the date yet, but maybe not...? Lira (talk) 14:43, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
It says last updated 04-01-16 for me on the main menu.
Which brings me to one question, monstrosity.
Do you know the times? - Catjaz63 14:45, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Guess it's only me, then. Weird. Like I said, MAM 17.2 showed up for me fairly recently in the Toons menu, but nowhere else... it still says 11-10-15, and the new stuff button underneath it doesn't say anything about an April Fools' toon. I don't know anything about Flash caches, but I guess I'll assume you're right. Lira (talk) 18:56, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Ah, that's mildly interesting. I just got on the site with my much faster Windows 10 computer, and from there it looks like the site's been updated just fine. This is my school-issued laptop, and it runs Windows 8... not sure if that has something to do with it. Lira (talk) 19:09, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
So what I've done in that circumstance is... not checked homestarrunner.com directly. I don't remember which toon it was offhand, probably sbemail206 or something, but I caught at least one recent toon pretty much before anyone else. Three places to check for a new toon absurdly quickly are:
  1. The YouTube channel, since most of the toons go up there at the same time now.
  2. @StrongBadActual, on the rare occasions that it's updated at the exact same time.
  3. (and here's the unusual one) the recent changes here on the wiki — even if no humans or dumb animal characters have made any edits. Look for a user called XMLbot, which makes an edit whenever the rando.xml file is updated. Usually before anyone notices. Once everyone is up to date, you'll know it's too late because the wiki will slow to a crawl, whereas the other sites won't.
That isn't foolproof, however... The Easter egg Slash slash slash! wasn't found until about a month later because no XML files were updated and the site was otherwise untouched. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 00:41, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

Isn't this type of thing supposed to be on some other page relating to Marzipan's Answering Machine? - 50.149.242.19
The "67 different callers" part might be worth adding somewhere, but the stats breakdown is probably better done on the main answering machine page. --DorianGray 17:14, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Actually, it has already been done on that page, and this info isn't on the actual toon pages, so nah. - 50.149.242.19

So...

How long do you think this surge of life will last? - 50.149.242.19

The Brothers Chaps aren't nearly as active on Homestar Runner dot com as they's used to be. But nowadays, you can usually count on them to do an April Fools toon and a Halloween toon per year. They might occasionally do some small stuff in between, but I would count on their next update being at Halloween (although hopefully I'm wrong). This "surge of life" isn't particularly unusual. Lira (talk) 19:16, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
I'm aware that they have done an April Fools toon and a Halloween toon each year since the hiatus "ended". That's why I didn't get any sleep the night before this, because I knew it would be coming. I was just wondering the amount of time this usually takes for things to wind down. - 50.149.242.19

Convenience

An anonny decided it was more convenient to add timestamps to this (very long and non-Flash) cartoon so we could see where to find each message. SRMX12 appears to disagree. What do others think? Because... I'm with anonny. We don't have to use the template on Answering Machine Callers page. (No, I don't think we should put timestamps on the other pages, since they have buttons to control which message you're listening to and they're not 39 minutes long.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 22:52, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

I decided it would be convenient because:
  1. This is the first and only Marzipan's Answering Machine to be officially uploaded to Youtube, and not in Flash, so it would be easier if we had a timestamp for the messages. On the other ones, you can just see that a specific message is the 5th one, so you can click to that. However, on here, you can't skip between messages because it's not a Flash file, just a Youtube video.
  2. This is 30 minutes long, so at least a few would have trouble getting to a message that they wanted to hear.
I guess it's better that it's not in the main headline, but I think it does need to be there somewhere. - 50.149.242.19
I like the idea and I support the timestamps, however I don't like where it's placed. And I really don't know where it would be placed best. I suppose where it is now is alright. However, if anyone has a good idea on where it place it, I'd maybe think twice. - Catjaz63 03:06, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Minor errors in the opening

I'm pretty sure the second sound when Strong Mad has the phone (the Ummmm... before Strong Bad says "nevermind") is also Strong Bad. Listen closely. Also, the Cheat never takes the phone from Strong Bad. SB just holds it out for him to dial. -209.6.137.13 02:04, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Sounds like Strong Mad to me. You're right about The Cheat not taking the phone though. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 02:20, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Do we really need to say why they hesitate? Do we even know for sure?

My first thought as to why the Strongs hesitated to call Marzipan's number was simply that they forgot it (which would be weird enough, given how often Strong Bad calls the number, but nevertheless...) This is Strong Bad, master of typing with boxing gloves! But even if their thick and no fingers are the reasons they hesitated, I still don't think it belongs in the transcript. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 10:38, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

I agree it shouldn't be in the transcript. Now, I do think that The Brothers Chaps are trying to make the old "typing with boxing gloves" joke there. But if that's the joke... we shouldn't explain it. Especially not in the transcript. We have a Fun Fact below that I think covers it pretty well. Lira (talk) 15:20, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
For the record, I thought it WAS due to the size or lack of fingers. However, just as much for the record, any explanation as part of the transcript, no matter what we conclude the reason is, would invariably be explaining the joke. Hence, think what you want about that scene, but don't explain it in the transcript. — Defender1031*Talk 16:10, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
I'm with Def in that I think yes, it's because of physical limitations. (And yes, Strong Bad can type with gloves on. That doesn't mean he can dial the phone with gloves on. Rule of Funny.) But I also think there's no need to explain the joke in the transcript. Heimstern Läufer 09:29, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
Now, what might be worth mentioning is that Strong Bad and Strong Mad both hold their hand out in front of the phone, which is when they become hesitant. Rather than explaining the joke, it describes the visual that allows the joke to exist, at least for those who are familiar with the characters. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 12:54, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
Mentioning the extra movement that goes on in that shot without assigning meaning to it is a very good idea. I have thus added such to the transcript. — Defender1031*Talk 15:43, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Possible Trivia?

  • Coach Z was in prison for at least a year and a half.

...Because he was there sometime before Jan. 1, 2011, at least until after June 2012. Is it worth putting in the article? Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 19:42, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Sometimes it seemed like he was trying to go there... I don't really think it's worth adding. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 04:44, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Also, that's readily obvious simply from watching the toon and doesn't need restating in trivia... — Defender1031*Talk 11:41, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

Most messages, most callers

About the trivia that Gfd just added... I'm kinda neutral on the point, so I wanted you guys's opinions. Is it necessary to say that this answering machine had the most messages? We already have that it's the longest toon ever, and it's a bit obvious. However, the specific numbers that he listed might be an interesting fact. You guys? Lira (talk) 00:21, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, it's kinda obvious. I'd be fine with deleting it. The numbers are kinda interesting though. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 01:17, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

Free Coach Z!

I was listening to Coach Z's second message... he's currently transcribed as saying "Ya end up basically suckin' the melonade ..." I don't hear a "ya". I hear something else, but I'm not entirely sure what it is/how to transcribe it. Like, his previous sentence just sort of flows into the next one (an ellipsis is probably necessary), and I hear some sort of "B" sound for some reason. I definitely don't hear "ya" or "you" at all. Any ideas? Lira (talk) 21:51, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

I definitely hear... "I". So I changed it on the page. Whether we transcribe the "b--" sound is another argument waiting to happen entirely.
Let's say that in third person: Purple Wrench definitely hears "I". So Purple Wrench changed it on the page. Purple Wrench can't decide if Purple Wrench is gonna count the "b--" or not, so Purple Wrench will just have to submit this edit before Purple Wrench makes up Purple Wrench's mind. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 04:11, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

Longest gap between toons

Don't know if it counts; or if Big Toons, Short Toons, and Holiday Toons could be argued as the same in this sense. As of yesterday (July 9), "Big Toons" has beaten the 2,587 day hiatus by one day. 70.71.56.46 18:30, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Actually, Puppet Stuff currently holds the record: the last puppet toon was 2800 days ago. (Okay, actually 2799.) Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 19:14, 10 July 2016 (UTC)
But until one of those categories gets another toon, there's no "between". Hypothetically, much as most of us don't like the possibility, there could never be a H*R toon ever again. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 21:14, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

How do you dial with boxing gloves on?

If you watch the toon Where's the Cheat? Strong Bad prank calls Marzipan but can dial the number himself. Should I add this to remarks?

Eh, maybe. Also might warrant an entry on the Inconsistencies page. It's really not a big deal though; The Brothers Chaps regularly change things like that just depending on what's funny. Also, sign your posts please. Lira (talk) 03:59, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Plus, maybe he just forgot the number. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 04:59, 15 July 2016 (UTC)

Homsar's Message

I am pretty sure that Homsar said, “Don’t get chintzy with the choc sauce.” Someone reverted my edit and said that Homsar said “chipsy”, which is not a word.—Bde1982 17:07, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

1. The "P" is clearly audible. 2. It's sort of Homsar's thing to not make sense. — Defender1031*Talk 13:25, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
That, and "chipsy" sounds like it describes a sauce of some kind. Y'know, because it has "chips" in it. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 00:19, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
Uh, DeFender1031, "chintzy" is NOT a nonsense word. It is a real word. It is a synonym for "cheap". You don't believe me? Check the dictionary.—Bde1982 15:35, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
I'm confused. I never said it was a nonsense word. I'm aware that chintzy is a real word. It's just not what Homsar is saying. — Defender1031*Talk 15:43, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
DeFender1031, this is a previous edit summary of yours (as you wrote it): "there doesn't seem to be a clear connection aside from them both being sonsense words that happen to sound similar". The word is NONSENSE, not sonsense. "Sonsense" is a nonsense word.—Bde1982 16:07, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Since you didn't link the edit you're referring to, I had to search for it myself. I assume you're referring to this edit which, if you check what was changed by that edit, has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with chintzy vs. chipsy. Also, "sonsense" was a typo, not a nonsense word. — Defender1031*Talk 16:15, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Well, "sonsense" IS a nonsense word, typo or not.—Bde1982 16:19, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
As the person who originally transcribed that part of the toon, I can hear "chintzy" if I force myself, but "chipsy" is the more natural-sounding result of Homsar's word. Whatever the case, do NOT start an edit war, Bde1982, and please don't attack irrelevant mistakes made by other users. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 16:25, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Jay, I heard "chintzy", but I didn't force myself. I saw that you reverted my edit.—Bde1982 16:29, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
I have no trouble hearing "chintzy". I go back and forth between being able to hear "chipsy" and not being able to hear that at all. I get that it's Homsar's M.O. not to make sense, but I think I think we should prefer a real word that fits the context over a nonsense word that doesn't. I can see "Don't get chintzy with the choc sauce" being a funny slogan in the same vein as "The captain of the gravy train." — It's dot com 17:03, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
It's dot com, I don't go back and forth. I hear "chintzy" every time. "Chintzy", unlike "chipsy", is real. "Chipsy" is nonsense.—Bde1982 17:13, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Dude, I'm trying to back you up here and you're telling me things I already know in what feels like an accusatory tone. It's not really helping your case. — It's dot com 17:27, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Again, I'm not sure I agree that we should prefer a real word over a nonsense word when we're dealing with Homsar. — Defender1031*Talk 17:18, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
First of all we should always prefer a real word unless it's unambiguously a nonsense word, regardless of who's speaking. Looking at Homsar's quotes, there are way more instances of words used weirdly than flat out made-up words. Second, that /p/ sound isn't very clear at all. I isolated the word, played it over and over, and I can no longer hear a /p/. — It's dot com 17:27, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Okay. Then I suggest the person who reverted my edit undo the revert.—Bde1982 17:29, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Also, It's dot com, I could also no longer hear a /p/.—Bde1982 17:33, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
DeFender1031: Can you hear "chintzy" at all? — It's dot com 17:38, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
I hear "chipsy" Beverly Clearly, though if I REALLY force myself, I can pretend that the end of what I hear as an I is really an N and that the P is really a T... — Defender1031*Talk 19:20, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
I can hear both alternately; I even tried slowing it down by half and compressing the audio peaks in Audacity, and it still sounds like either one. (It isn't a hard "P"-sound though.) That said, I would like to point out that "chipsy" makes another pun; besides what I said earlier ("chips" = crisps, which you dip in sauce), if the second part is not "chalk" but "choc", then it's also a pun on "chocolate chips". I thought that was obvious until it was changed to "chalk".
But I don't think this is going to be solved anytime soon, so maybe we should just put a footnote. ...Which goes along with the other footnote that also has to do with cookies. How strange. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 00:25, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

Blue Laser Commander vs. Guy Who Does the Bad Guy's Voice

Since a) the "BLAAAAAH" is identified as Crack Stuntman and 2) the Cheat Commandos are known to be fictional in-universe, wouldn't it make sense for the BLC's "Marzi—" to be the GWDtBGV? RickTommy (edits) 05:39, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

That same thought struck me when I saw anonny's edit, which is why I decided not to revert it. Lira (talk) 11:33, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
That is a good point. However, consider The Brothers Chaps' perspective. When Matt recorded that voice, what was he thinking? What was his intention? The voice of a one-toon Easter egg voice actor man, or a main-ish alternate universe-type character? Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 04:37, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

Green liquid

I think that green liquid coming out of the answering machine is Mountain Dew, since that's a reoccurring theme when it comes to tech destruction in the Homestar Runner universe. -- Mml554 talk 14:38, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Interesting theory, but it looks a little more... viscous to me. I think it's just goo. It's really speculation either way. Lira (talk) 15:05, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Possible They Might Be Giants reference

Does anyone else think "sew a llama head onto your existing head" might be a reference to "prosthetic foreheads on their real heads" from They Might Be Giants' song "We Want a Rock?" JohnnyLurg 17:27, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
