Masking!  By using masking, you can have a single piece of any main page component separable.  For example, you can make an instance of newbutton.swf that contains only the updates by drawing a box around the news button, then an instance of newbutton.swf that only contains "first time here" by drawing a box over that.  So you end up with two invisible buttons that can't possibly be clicked on by normal means.--[[User:Dwedit|Dwedit]] 15:18, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

::Which is, no offense, why we shouldn't take your word for it. It is very rare for a non-native speaker to grasp the subtleties of the informal grammar of another language. Anyways, "Sup" in this context is not a question, as not only does it not require an answer, actually answering the as if it were given in its original form would be considered a faux pas. "Sup man", on the other hand is a bit trickier, as it does require a response, however, that response again need not answer the underlying question. {{User:Trlkly/sig}} 05:33, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

I was messing around a bit ago with the "non-existant" buttons that you can uncover via the tab key, and noticed something odd... it's not in the site screenshot, so I have no idea what the deal is, but I could very clearly see the outline of a second "First time here" button, right where one of the afformentioned "invisible buttons" is. Just to the left of the *real* one; a little bit above Homestar's hat. I have no clue if this is just on my end or what, but I figured I'd note it anyhow. I took a screenshot, but I've never uploaded anything here, and have no clue how, so... eh. It's not that big of a deal, anyhow. Just a little oddity I happened to run across. -{{User:YK/sig}} 07:10, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Ding! Main Page 23 is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

Is this main page featured on the main page randomizer, or is it another deal like Main Page 22? Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 17:30, 19 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I hit the main button on the bottom (not the one on the title page) and got 22. --- Camalex(talk)

This is really freaky! I was pressing on the tab bar, and after a second of the yellow box scrolling really fast, Strong Bad popped up but facing me and he said "Oh, It's the back of my head!". Has anyone else ever gottn this? It was on the .swf file, just to tell you. -FaceCrap

It's supposed to do that. Strong Bad's adressing you if you were looking at the main page normally, but you're behind the main page. That's why he's saying "It's the back of my head" while facing you.

[edit]  ? or !

Maybe I'm being nitpicky here, but I think it would be more appropriate for the transcript to read "Sup, man!" and "Sup!" with exclamation points instead of question marks. Especially in this context, I don't think they're really questions so much as just greetings. I don't know. That's just me.

[edit] Incorrectly regarded as goofs

I know this article is still young, but I think so far we've been overly critical with regard to the goofs. I think DorianGray said it best: "It's debatable how much of the Main Pages are actually canon anyway."

  • The Weeklies buttons are not truly flipped. It should go in this order, left to right: Random Toon, Sketchbook, Weekly Fanstuff, then Quote of the Week.
    • While this is true, TBC would have had to make another newbutton.swf for this to happen. So by them not doing this, we consider this a goof?
      • They went to the trouble to make the rest of the page reversed, why leave this one out? — It's dot com
        • I think they left this out simply due to the reason I supplied: Having to make an "reversed" flash file. I'll further extend this to homepage_23.swf. They didn't reverse the numerical order for a similiar reason. The only notable change I see from homepages.swf is the that the buttons are justified to the right instead of the left. —THE PAPER PREEEOW
          • But in making "homepages_23", they proved that they could, if they wanted to, have made "newbutton_23". Also, now that you bring it up, I think the numerical order should be reversed on the home pages. Again, why do most of a joke but not all of it? — It's dot com 21:51, 20 Sep 2005 (UTC)
            • I can't speak for TBC, but I would say they probably didn't reverse order of the weeklies and the homepages because of difficulties in doing so. At this point, we're both speculating as to why TBC didn't complete the joke. I think it comes down to the limits of what you can do in Flash easily. I stress easily here not to discredit any of TBC's work, but to show that I think they would have done it had it been more feasable. My argument here is that it isn't GOOF. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 22:19, 20 Sep 2005 (UTC)
              • It's still notable, so I'll meet you halfway. Moving to remarks. — It's dot com 22:29, 20 Sep 2005 (UTC)

  • If The Cheat falls while the other Homestar is walking past, Homestar is in front of The Cheat even though from the perspective he should be farther away.
    • Things like this happen many times in main pages, See Firebird's edit on Main Page 13.
      • I could do without this one. Isn't it a Flash artifact and therefore disqualified anyway? In fact, I'm gonna give this one the del taco on those grounds. — It's dot com
        • Actually, I think that TBC can do the layering themselves, and it actually is their own mistake. I work in flash, so I'd probably know. -FaceCrap
          • Still, each button is its own segment, independent of the others. — It's dot com 01:07, 21 Sep 2005 (UTC)
            • The term "Flash artifact" is over-applied around here. It's meant to refer to unusual things found by manipulating the Flash file (that is, watching the .swf file directly or right-clicking and using the options there.) Thus, this is a mistake, not a Flash artifact. --Jay (Talk) 19:49, 21 Sep 2005 (UTC)
              • I was gonna move your comments here but I see you already have some. I see your point, but I don't think it's a mistake. Possibly a glitch or a remark, but not a goof, because the buttons, technically, are independent from each other, and each one is supposed to play out on its own. The fact that two buttons together don't quite work might be notable, but we haven't listed them as goofs on other main pages. — It's dot com 20:13, 21 Sep 2005 (UTC)
                • Examining the other main pages, this situation actually comes up almost never, and when it has, they've been pretty consistent about getting the layering right. I dunno... I guess I could see it as a goof (rather than a remark or a glitch) if someone really really felt that they should have gotten it right. — It's dot com
                  • Personally, I think they should've gotten it right. If it was my animation I was making and was aware of what was going on, I'd make sure to avoid such a thing. One of my favorite things to do with Main pages is to run the mouse up and down to let all of the events happen at once (like in the 4th of July one!) For that reason, I also think it should be considered a goof.--Stux 21:17, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

  • The support behind Homestar's head would be visible from the front, but doesn't show up on any of the other main pages.
    • It is true that other main pages do not have a piece of wood in that spot. However, for all we know it was added to the wooden "set" between Main Page 22 and this one for all we know. Perhaps we can move this to "remarks".

  • Homestar is standing in front of the set and the piece of wood that falls is behind it, so it should drop behind him, not hit him on the head.
    • Again, I think we're being overly critical here. Generally odd things that defy the laws of physics happen on main pages. Is it a goof every time Homsar's hat falls back to his head when normally it should have missed his head and fell on the ground? —THE PAPER PREEEOW 20:38, 20 Sep 2005 (UTC)
      • Meh, I could go either way on this one. — It's dot com 20:43, 20 Sep 2005 (UTC)
      • Perhaps the wooden set is leaning away from the camera, so its actually over Homestar's head

[edit] Comments

I really like the fact that Strong Sad could very easily have said "I'm the floating head of doom" himself, but instead for some reason he plays a recording of himself saying it. Funny stuff. --Der Pepper

That is because Strong Sad would have to repeat it over and over, never sounding different.

That's barely an issue. I mean, Strong Bad and Homestar do that just fine here. - Joshua 17:18, 21 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Home Pages vs. Main Pages

TBC have called them 'home pages' and the wiki calls them 'Main Pages'. Is there any difference between these two terms or is this one of those wikisms like 'The Guy at the Depot'? —THE PAPER PREEEOW 22:36, 20 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Er, the button on the main page reads "new main page" and the link in the navbar reads "main" AND Coach Z calls it "main page number 23". — It's dot com 22:39, 20 Sep 2005 (UTC)
BTW, there's a space in the "home pages" title above the links to the, um, main pages. — It's dot com
True. Every main page except this one. See 'homepages' in FAQ. Looks like even TBC can't keep it straight. Just like the canon spelling of The Paper's sound. ;) —THE PAPER PREEEOW 22:45, 20 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Ah, touché, mon ami. There's actually a lot of examples like that, now that I think about it (listing them all would take up too much space here). But I did think of another "main" argument: Just look at the file name for each of the pages. — It's dot com 22:54, 20 Sep 2005 (UTC)
You got me there. Clearly the preferred term is 'main page'. Now I wonder why 'mainpage' never caught on. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 23:01, 20 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I dunno. I kinda prefer the two-word form myself. Main page. Home page. Here on the wiki: User page. Talk page. — It's dot com

[edit] Removed Entry

Does this belong back here?

  • The way The Cheat falls and the sounds he makes may be a reference to the "Kick The Cheat" mini-game used to sell the The Cheat plush toy.

This was removed by 149.143.200.7 back in Sept 19, who I have seen randomly removing stuff from sites (I have added to the troll list). It hasn't been fixed since, but it seems like a plausible remark. --Stux 15:49, 3 Oct 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Strong Bad Speaks

Is it just me, or does Strong Bad move his head/talk slower than the actual sound clip? There might be something wrong with my computer, and it doesn't happen with any of the other things. Alcnolien 19:15, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, my visuals lag behind the sound frequently in many toons, and it often seems to be related to my memory. Don't worry 'bout it. —AbdiViklas 23:49, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] How they pulled it off

Masking! By using masking, you can have a single piece of any main page component separable. For example, you can make an instance of newbutton.swf that contains only the updates by drawing a box around the news button, then an instance of newbutton.swf that only contains "first time here" by drawing a box over that. So you end up with two invisible buttons that can't possibly be clicked on by normal means.--Dwedit 15:18, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Until

"From March 16, 2006 and onwards..." - well not anymore! What was the date the wallpaper was no longer available from the main pages? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 01:07, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Question Mark???

Does the "Sup man?" in store really need a question mark? Same for when the second time: "Sup?" They sound normal, not confused! HRfan222

"Sup, man?" is a question, dude. and "sup?" is also a question, dude. 'Sup' is slang for 'What's up' which, by the way, also is a question, dude. And I, as swedish is telling you this.---Marvelrulez
Which is, no offense, why we shouldn't take your word for it. (The)trlkly 05:33, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Date goof.

On Main Page 23, the 2000-2007 thing incorrectly reads 2000-2005. --Jawsh

[edit] Semi-interesting find... maybe

-YKHi. [edit] Still true?

  • Strong Bad's head bobs when the viewer cannot see his mouth, as is the case in most Strong Bad emails. Here, it bobs when he thinks the viewer can see his mouth (for the "front of my head" line) and doesn't when he thinks the viewer can't

I am having trouble seeing this. The version I'm seeing, his head bobs both times, just in different ways. And it bobs more obviously when SB is facing away from the screen. (The)trlkly 05:38, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Strong Sad's severed head

Wouldn't that be another instance of a fake severed head? NeoExelor 04:12, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Not exactly. Did Strong Sad get his head really cut off and dangling from wire? I hope not... MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 04:15, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Hey guys, I just noticed it still says "copyright 2001-2008" on this Main Page, but -09 on all others. Significant much? -The Annoying One

whats weird to me is why there were gray hands (which I'm guessing were Strong Sad's) pushing the button to make the thing say something Strong Sad would say. Why do do that when Strong Sad is right there to deliver the line?
