Strong Bad's up-to-date email program looks suspiciously like PINE (PINE Is Not Elm). PINE is one of the older old-school email clients on UNIX networks such as university shell accounts.

-- The official acronym for PINE is Program for Internet News and Email.

Contrast

Do you think that perhaps the contrast knob will be added to the Lappy later on? I mean, maybe they just forgot to put it in. In any case, I liked the contrast thing (although the LCD liquid effect is pretty dang cool).

  • Probably not. Most laptops I've seen don't have contrast knobs (though my knowledge of ancient laptops is pretty non-existant). --TheNintenGenius 15:00, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)
    • I have an ancient laptop... probably closer to a Lappy 286 than a Lappy 486. It has no contrast, but it does have brightness which would basically just make the backlight brighter or darker. Even at its brightest, it's nowhere near bright enough unless all the lights are out. So theoretically this could be added, but I have a feeling they're gonna leave it as just the LCD effect. --jtickle 23:45, 29 Nov 204 (EST)
      • I've used several laptops, and I have never seen a contrast setting on any of them. I think it's a setting specific to the electron guns used in CRT monitors. --oddtodd 00:10, 1 Dec 2004 (MST)
        • I've used a Toshiba 286 laptop with a blue LCD screen. It definately had a constrast knob, it was on the side of the computer.--Dwedit 17:39, 1 Dec 2004 (MST)
          • Then I was wrong, which wouldn't be the first time that's happened. Thanks. --oddtodd 20:37, 2 Dec 2004 (MST)
    • Perhaps more relevent, the original Gateway Colorbook had a 486, color screen, and a contrast knob which had the interesting property of being able to invert the color like a photographic negative if you went too far in the wrong direction. --Anonymous
      • I, too, really like the LCD effect when I click on Lappy's screen. Probably because I imagine SB has to clean all those "fingerprints!" -- anonymous lurker 12:14, 13 Dec (PST
  • I personally don't think that TBC will bother adding contrast knobs. I mean, what realy purpose were they in the first place besides finding "glitches" when there was a cut scene? -Tony Stony 11:05, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

OS Inspiration

I know I can't be the only one to see parallels between the Lappy 486's logo and that of Mac OS 8. Even the startup sound seems rather Mac-inspired. --codeman38 21:56, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)

Compy 386 was also mac-inspired. See e-mail "big white face" when Strong Mad runs "b/w" (You can see the Apple logo in the upper-left corner, as well as various other design similarities.) Also, The Cheat's computer is obviously an iMac.

Oh, yeah, it's definitely Mac-inspired.—StrongstarRunbad 14:53, 9 Dec 2004 (MST)

The prompt seems to be from Apple DOS, unless there's another OS with a "]" prompt. 68.163.147.134 23:48, 18 Dec 2004 (MST)

Lappy outer logo

Can anyone get a shot of the Lappy outer logo? When Strong Bad carries it in his fist blocks it.

I'm working on it, as you can see from this image. Also, if you wanted a screenshot of the logo that Strong Bad's head blocks when we first see the logo on screen, that image is here. Even if I'm able to cut Strong Bad out from the screenshot of the ORIGINAL FRAME, the image quality will not be too high. Better to leave it small such as this thumbnail. Hope this was helpful.

Fun Facts moved from STUFF

Lappy Startup Screen

The Lappy's boot-up process-- including the sound, the icon, and the logo text-- is very reminiscent of that of Mac OS 8. --codeman38 21:51, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)

  • Decline. This is already noted in the Fun Facts page of the toon. -- RPharazon
  • Rewrite. If it's already noted, this version isn't quite accurate. The Mac startup sound is coded into the hardware, and has been for quite a while. The sound and icon, however, are part of the Mac OS. If you have a Mac, try starting it up using Linux - the sound is the same, but the screen is different. --oddtodd
  • Shorten and Rewrite. Same as above. --The Somewhat Awesome Jesty 04:15, 1 Dec 2004 (MST)
  • Comment. This has been up awhile, and while it appears that a rewrite is needed, no one has proposed one. Perhaps someone could do that? --MadEwokHerd 16:03, 30 Dec 2004 (MST)
  • Move it. This goes on the Lappy page! --Pianoplayerontheroof
  • STRONGLY DECLINE! The Mac bootup sound plays before any display shows, and System 8's loading screen does not have any fadein effects. Furthermore, the Mac OS 8 is only two colors, not four. --Aussie Evil 13:58, 7 Mar 2005 (MST) (sorry, forgot to sign)
    • Comment, Post-STUFF Mac OS 8 was in full color, though it did still retain System 7's grayscale capabilities. --TheEggman 01:16, 10 Mar 2005 (MST)
  • Decline --Tony Stony 11:07, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

DELETED!!!

So, I've been think about the "DELETED" picture for the Lappy might be equal to the one in replacement, maybe.--oopsyoubwokeit 15:58, 28 Mar 2005 (MST)

Except, of course, it still says DELETED!! Mee

Colors

Does the explosion in "do over" count as more colors we have seen the lappy create? or not?

There should at least some note that it can display what seems to be an animated gif. --151.204.128.79 01:07, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • I think it should. Though there are little dots of green and blue in it (If you print screen, you don't even have to zoom in) I put in Maroon, brown, light brown, and beige. I think those are the main colors, buyt if anyone disagrees, please say so.
It's not going to be very easy to get every single color in the explosion. I think "The explosion in do over" would work, but not every color. —FireBird|Talk 15:53, 6 Jul 2005 (UTC)
  • I agree, so I think those four will do (Plus white, but it's already on the list) We at least should use brown and light brown, but maroon and beige should also be noted. If it's shown on the Lappy, then it should be noted. - Ju Ju Master 17:15, 6 Jul 2005 (UTC)

I think we should ditch the section and note that, while mostly based on CGA graphics, it seems to also be able to display VGA. --Shadow Hog 17:22, 6 Jul 2005 (UTC)

  • Even though I like the section, Shaodw Hog might be right.. Ju Ju Master
