Name

Hey could someone mind changing the name of this article from Hey,X. I really like your X costume to "Hey, X, I Really Like Your X Costume". I messed up when I was writing the article and I don't know how to change it. Geonightman 19:36, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Delete?

I think that What are you supposed to be? handles this topic much more thoroughly. Any thoughts? StrongAwesome 22:03, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Well I actually made this a separate article because this one joke has been used over and over again as itself. I feel it should be considered a running gag.Geonightman 22:27, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
I have to agree with StrongAwesome. The line itself can be mentioned on the "What are you supposed to be" page, maybe even as a subsection, but it's basically the same joke. --Jay (Talk) 23:56, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
I stand on saying that we should keep it a separate page, however if we do decide to merge this with "What are you supposed to be?" then I agree with you Jay in that it should at least be a subsection.--Geonightman 03:17, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
Comment I always thought of "What are you supposed to be?" as when a character is confused about what other characters are dressed up as. Though if a merge is wanted, then "What are you supposed to be?" should be given a new title to cover the multiple costume running gags. --Ngamer01 17:17, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
I have to agree with the common opinion here. This is not a seperate joke from What are you supposed to be? at all. Also, I really don't like using algebraic variables in article titles. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 20:29, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
I'm neutral on what should happen here, but this is what a merge might look like. It seems like this version creates duplicate information, and i'm not sure if that's a problem/how to fix it if it is. Policy is escaping me right now, but i think that if the final decision is to merge, this should be a redirect to that page instead of a hard delete. The Knights Who Say Ni 00:01, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
I'm for the merge linked in Ni's reply. ColdReactive 02:32, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
There are multiple ways we could merge these:
Possibility 1: Note in the description that Homestar tends to word his costume confusion as "Hey, X, I really like your X costume", and note those in the list.
Possibility 2: Remove any of Homestar's "Hey X" lines in the main list and put them only in the subsection; the header of the subsection should be very much reworded if we do that sort of merge, BTW.
Possibility 3: Deal with the duplicate info. (Still editing the header.)
Whatever the case, though, I'm still not sure this is separate enough to merit a separate page. (To Ngamer01, this line IS about when a character (namely, Homestar) is confused about what other characters are dressed up as. It's just a more specific form of that.) --Jay (Talk) 10:05, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Now I don't think there is even any need for merging. The current structure of What are you supposed to be? is fine as it is because I doubt many readers will really want to learn what way Homestar formats his question for each instance. (But hey, what do I know?) I think that deletion of this article is the best way to go, with no major changes to WAYSTB being necessary. Homestar-Winner (talk) 04:18, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
I think it's significant that while others are saying, "What are you? Such and such?", Homestar is an exception.. he doesn't ask, he just assumes he's right and his phrasing is almost identical most of the time (and there are many instances). Some effort should be made to document this. Somewhere. Either keep, or merge and explain the contrast. OptimisticFool 06:27, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and merged the article. RickTommy (edits) 03:47, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and unmerged it. There's no consensus to do this. Also, I don't think it should be merged. It's a subjoke of the larger one, but it's happened so many times as to be its own joke itself. — Defender1031*Talk 09:49, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Revisit: I think that this does discuss a separate-enough topic from "wearing?" that it merits its own page. My reasoning is this: "wearing?" discusses how TBC Lampshades really obscure and hard-to-recognize references (they are very good at that), however Homestar's guesses are simply off-the-wall and very Homestaresque even if what the real costume is supposed to be is fairly obvious. I think that should be the distinguishing line between both articles. More so, this article needs to explain what Homestar was referring to and what the real costume was much like "wearing?". --Stux 13:07, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Did I somehow accidentally start this conversation because of what I wrote yesterday? I think it should be a separate article as well, its more specific and a homestar-exclusive gag and he doesn't actually ask who someone is—he just states it. I think it should go in the Homestar Running gags category. It's not covered completely in What are you supposed to be?, though this page itself may need work. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 22:19, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Name

While I still think this should be flat-out merged with What are you supposed to be?, I think at the very least we could get rid of the algebraic variables in the title of the article. I never liked having "X" in a title to represent a wild card. Since this joke is only used by Homestar, could we just name the article "Homestar's Costume Confusion"? I mean, that's lame, but maybe someone else could come up with something better. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 21:19, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

I think it should be renamed to Hey, X, I really like your X' instead, to cover all grounds, object, costume or anything really. ColdReactive 05:11, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
How about just "I Like Your X Costume"? That'sBupkis! 04:45, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
I think it should be merged with all of the costume discussion related pages, and renamed "Costume talk". --ToaJuaraevo01 File:Homsar-in-motion.gif 21:25, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
But each of those gags is a completely separate and distinct running joke. This is clearly a stand alone joke, it just doesn't have an obvious name to go with it. (Meaning, even if it were merged, which I strongly disagree with, I'd imagine that the merged page would have separate subsections for each distinct joke, and you'd still be left with the question of what to name the subsection.) — Defender1031*Talk 22:11, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
I just expanded the intro and realized that the running theme is homestar mistakenly complimenting a costume. So perhaps some name along the lines of "Mistaken Costume Compliments"? — Defender1031*Talk 10:25, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

This article was just moved to "Homestar Runner's Mistaken Costume Compliments", which is just crazy long and boring. I moved it back. While I was at it, I trimmed out the wildcards, making its name match its debut appearance in The House That Gave Sucky Treats. It's simple and to the point, and when I see it I know what article it's talking about. — It's dot com 01:13, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
