Guitarist

I hereby move to claim that the Guitarist's name is Stave.--ChrisF talk 15:03, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Any particular reason? If there's not, then this isn't something we should put on any pages. --Jay (Talk) 15:13, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Let's subject it to a poll, first--ChrisF talk 15:18, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
No. Unless you can answer my previous question, this topic is closed. --Jay (Talk) 15:19, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Very well. Have it your way.--ChrisF talk 15:22, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
his name is Haddi-man. it says so in the videro, he's one of the directors
idk what his name is, but it's pretty clear to me that it isn't Davey. get that out of the transcript. the only reason i'm not doing it is b/c idk what to replace it with. The Knights Who Say Ni 20:00, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
I think Davey is the kid with the french fry picture on his shirt. --Platinum789hi 20:59, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
well, since the guy with the french fry picture on his shirt called the other guy Davey, i highly doubt that. the reason i don't think Davey is the guitarist is b/c Strong Bad said to Davey, "you get french fries" and he said to the guitarist, "but you don't get french fries". The Knights Who Say Ni 21:57, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
I was under the impression that Davey was the guitarist because he says that he wrote a song and then receives the hair/mustache and guitar that Davey has. Perhaps they are just two different versions of Davey. Or TBC needed another person to give french fries. Monkeytender 22:27, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
My opinion, Davey and the guy with the mustache are two different guys. The hair and guitar falling from the sky can be attributed to nothing more that Powered By The Cheat. Most PBTC toons have little weird quirks like that. I think the guitarist should be called Stupid Hippie.--.Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 02:31, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Well then, who the crap is Davey?! Are you sure he's not The singer? (Sorry about the outburst. :() --Platinum789hi 22:32, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
"I'm Gonna sing it." Espemon333 01:01, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, but the guy named Davey in the beginning of this toon, and the guitarist previously seen in for kids don't look anything alike, and they're not even voiced by the same person. I think Davey saing "I'm gonna sing it" and the hair and guitar falling from the heavens to Davey's head and arms is just a classic case of HomestarRunner.com throwing the laws of physics and anything that makes sense out the window.--.Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 02:19, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
Decline. The cartoon dude who puts on the wig and mustache is Davey, not the guitarist dude he's imitating. Where's STUFF when you need it? --Periodic Table Greg 19:23, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
I think it is Davey. The puppet vesion and his voice are just side-affects of putting The Cheat in charge of making the intro. Just like in Rap Song, Peacy P and Coach Z looked and sounded like old, washed up rappers. Oops, they already do. You know what I mean.--Jellote wuz here 20:12, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
I think it goes like this: Davey is singing the song but since this is an anmiated music video, the character seen singing and playing guitar (the dude from for kids) isn't necessarily the actual person singing (Davey). The Cheat just used the graphics from the imaginary kids' show (I wonder where he got imaginary graphics from) for the video. Think of the videos of The Gorillaz for example, where it's also cartoon characters standing in for the actual musicians. Just my opinion, but I think it's a solution to this dilemma.--79.221.92.78 15:46, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Audio quality

I think the whole song is higher quality, but 'I'm-a gonna throw a brick at your cellist' sounds higher quality than the rest. StrongAwesome74 19:38, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

The "brick at your cellist" line is higher quality for sure. Don't know about the rest, though. NMRodo 21:45, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Puppets

Doesn't the title, "Davey Gets His Due" sound similar to Main Page 25's Toons quote, "The Puppets get their due"? AtarifanaticAtari controller 21:07, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Haddi-man

The title card for the song says "dir: Haddi-man and The Cheat. In for kids, homsar's show is titled 'Waddya know, Haddi-man?' Could this mean homsar helped direct this video? FugitiveofPhysics 21:39, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

That's the impression I was under, especially since the Davey animations match the animations from the show. Monkeytender 22:25, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Peasant's Quest reference?

At the beginning of the mountain scene, doesn't it seem like we've seen those pixelated lightning bolts before? - FugitiveofPhysics 21:43, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

That was in PQ and TROGDOR!!! I think. Espemon333 23:53, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Gutterance.

If we felt like we should start counting gutteral utterances, this certainly has one. Durniel 02:56, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Care to explain? (Signed out Open SOurce Greg)
I believe he's referring to this line: "STRONG BAD: Awwwwwwww! I thought you were done." It's more of an "Aaaauuuuuuuuuuuugh!" actually. Sounds like a gutterance to me. Nightsong81 17:58, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Powered by the cheat?

I do not think this should be sorted under powered by the cheat. If there was a category for the brothers chaps experimenting with lcd I think this would fit rite in.96.242.156.142 17:02, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

That's where it's filed in the Toons menu on the official site. Besides, it's got a PbTC intro and bridge. --Jay (Talk) 17:03, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Oh, Hey you guys...

which one of the ol' Supreme Giant Boys akshully sing this? Cuz it doesn't sound like any of the awesome Maybe their Giants band!

Um... I'm pretty sure the main voice is John Linnel, and the second voice is John Flansburgh... unless you meant something else.Durniel 07:06, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

awesome,thanks.

Howd he do that?

Should it be noted that Davie's gitar has no strings? Espemon333 00:04, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

No. This is a PBTC toon, which means it uses a simpler, more abstract and even more absurdist style than cartoons set in the actual Homestar universe. Nightsong81 01:03, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
The only PbTC segments are the intro and the bridge. The singer through most of the song is not PbTC-style (most of the time.) --Jay (Talk) 01:12, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough, but the haddi-man segments aren't exactly "realistic" even by sbemail standards, themselves. The man's guitar didn't have any strings in for kids, either. Was it notable then? Nightsong81 02:34, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Charlie?

Does anyone else think that there might be some kind of reference to Charlie the Unicorn? Or is that wishful thinking on my part? - Point7Q

considering they never mention the name 'Charlie', Just Unicorns doesn't mean it's a reference to him, or any specific unicorn. StrongAwesome74 02:24, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
I kind of figured that, but I wanted to bring it up anyway. I've seen only the "Candy Mountain" one (I've heard there are others?), but it's been a while and I thought the rainbow bridge thing sounded familiar. If a rainbow bridge hasn't been featured in something with Charlie, it should be. - Point7Q 02:45, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Rainbows and unicorns go together like sparkles and... unicorns. They just go together. And if you're looking for the conceptual origin of a rainbow bridge, you're going to have to go a lot farther back than Charlie the Unicorn. Nightsong81 03:43, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Good point. Thinking about it further, I suspect the real reason it seemed familiar is because of the "sweet, sweet, rainbow bridge" in flashback, which is probably too much of a stretch to cite as an internal reference. - Point7Q 10:53, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Reply about Charlie the Unicorn:
Yes, there are 2 other ones as of this moment (not including the Youtube Live skits). Get ready to waste your time.--24.39.181.251 04:00, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Sierra Presents Chernabog

Isn't this one of the "it can't be both" cases? -128.103.10.119 03:39, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Chernabog. Quest For Glory II. Compare for yourself. Which is more similar? Nightsong81 04:12, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
To me, the Chernabog seems more likely. The Chernabog comes from Slavonic legend, doesn't he? The metal sequence just oozes European metal. He also commands his subordinates with wild arm gestures and black magic. Strong Bad seems to grant French Fries in the same way. The Night on Bald Mountain sequence just seems more well known and fits with the semi-Germanic theme going on. The djinn is Arabic, a far cry from the European countries, and well, let's face it... the djinn doesn't do a lot. He just laughs. To me, Chernabog is the way to go. Discopwahty1975 14:14, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Also, Fantasia is known for it's opera and classical music, which goes well with the Brunnhilde reference. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 19:55, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, but TBC are known to throw in references to old games in their work, and Strong Bad in the French Fries sequence does look a lot like the djinni... more so than Chernabog (who is shadow-black and has huge wings). Fantasia is definitely a better known reference, and Chernabog itself is awesomely metal, so I'm on the fence, here. I can see a solid case for either.Nightsong81 05:32, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Does anyone want an OGG of this?

I cut out part of the podcast (this entire song) and converted it to OGG, for those who can't play MP3s due to patent restrictions disallowing you to play MP3s. ColdReactive 00:49, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

I think it would be nice if you just upload it onto the Wiki. Just in case anyone wants to have the song as their own.--70.176.220.156 23:15, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Except don't. It's not our file to do with as we please. It's one thing to bend the rules of fair use with TBC's images, but what liberties they afford us don't extend to TMBG's copyrighted music. — It's dot com 04:09, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Sentence Quality

This sentence in Explanations has issues:

This song comes from They Might Be Giants Podcast 37A, during which John Flansburgh also mentions hoping to make this into something on homestarrunner.com, which, eleven months later, it has.

Specifically, "it has" is ambiguous. What is "it," and what has it done? This isn't meant to be rude to the person who wrote it, but I'm not sure the best way to fix it. It would technically work with, "..., he has," but I'm not sure that's the best phrasing. It could also work with, "which happened eleven months later." Maybe just leave off everything after homestarrunner.com?146.122.71.68 12:21, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

... The use of "it" is by far the least of this sentence's problems. Run-on sentence, mis-ordered clauses, terrible punctuation, no tense agreement, no verb agreement. It's barely got noun agreement. I'd attempt a rewrite, but late at night right now, so I'm not sure I could make anything much more coherent. --Belthazar 13:36, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
How about:
This song comes from They Might Be Giants Podcast 37A, which was released eleven months before this toon. During the podcast, John Flansburgh mentions that the song is "hopefully going to be made into something with Homestar."
I think that reads a lot better, and has all the same information. --phlip TC 13:58, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Ooo, yah, that flows much better. --Belthazar 20:52, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Smiling Strong Bad?

It looks like Strong Bad smiles briefly in Haddi-Man form when he threatens to melt the guitarist's face. Thoughts? --HungryHungryHippy 20:31, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

It sure does look like it. I'm gonna add it now. --Jellote wuz here 20:44, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
While his mouth is in the shape of a smile, it just looks to me like he's saying the word "face". --Belthazar 20:50, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
I doubt it Jellote/Hippy. Espemon333 01:03, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Lack of visible arms

Is the fact that the 'Other Guy' (blue shirt) seems to be holding the french fries without arms worthy of noticing?

I'm not sure, given that it's Powered by The Cheat art. Since we don't see a more standard version of him, and since PbTC is not an accurate depiction of reality, I'm not sure how much we can say for certain. --DorianGray 21:24, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Cellista

This has been suggested by multiple users (well, two anonnies; they could actually be the same person): No, Strong Bad is not saying the word "celesta". "Celesta" begins with an "S" sound and has the accent on the second syllable. "Cellist" begins with a "CH" sound and has the accent on the first syllable (as a former cellist, I'd know). Strong Bad's pronunciation matches "cellist" exactly. Furthermore, the song has a pretty clear cello in the second verse. I don't believe a celesta is heard anywhere in the song. Yeah, he hits a piano. Just pretend that he missed the cellist, because "celesta" just simply does not fit. --Jay (Talk) 08:52, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Additionally, a breaking piano sound is probably both easier to find and to recognise. Imagine if they did somehow find a breaking cello sound. How would we know that from some other noise? --DorianGray 08:59, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
I agree (though I'm quick to point out that "celesta", being an Italian-based spelling, can be pronounced with a "ch"). Nonetheless, the syllable accent makes it clearly "cellist". Incidentally, I think it's perfectly possible that Strong Bad said "cellist" having no idea who he was throwing a brick at, since (1.) there's not exactly anything in this song that would suggest a cellist is playing at all and (2.) SB's style, which is mainly about squeedlies and meedlies, probably doesn't lead him to know or care that much about classical instruments. Heimstern Läufer 09:10, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
"there's not exactly anything in this song that would suggest a cellist is playing at all" Um, you mean other than the obvious cello playing counterpoint in the second verse? --Jay (Talk) 09:12, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, I guess that could be a cello... I guess I'm just not easily convinced by electronic instrument sounds, 'cause it doesn't sound much like one to me. Heimstern Läufer 09:15, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Who a- Who are you?

I'm pretty sure Strong Bad says "Who a- Who are you?", not Wh-Who are you? Also, the caption for the picture on this page is different to the transcript. 220.235.195.186 03:57, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
