Ding! Cool Things is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

Contents

Picture

Is that picture okay? --Dinoshaur 09:58, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Yup. S'fine. Poopsmith Z 10:34, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I replaced it with a more detailed image of the assembled band because I think fans will favor a picture with four main characters as opposed to a "cool tapes" wall. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 10:38, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I was thinking of getting a screen from the SWF. file but it's got a chunk out of Strong Mad's arm. I've only started using the Print Screen thing. --Dinoshaur 10:41, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Haha... down with the people... I can't believe I didn't notice that!

Stop It!

And to whichever guest-styling who keeps changing my ''s to ==s and ===s to 's etc, please stop it. The way at is NOW is how it is across the wiki.

Voice on the TV

While it's prolly not meant to be him, the voice on the TV sounds a lot like 1-Up. -- tomstiff 13:38, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, you're kinda right... --MrsCommanderson 14:28, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Maybe it's because they are played by the same voice actor who has to juggle dozens of voices? - Joshua

Well, true, but it still does have a little bit of a "1-Up" to it. --MrsCommanderson 01:54, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I just noticed that he is saying (almost) the SAME THING as in Privilages when the cheat is watching tv. IF this isn't mentioned already, could someone look it up to see if they are references? thanks a million!--Martin925 04:32, 2 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Amps

The article seems to imply that the Amps say something different than those in different town, but they don't. Both say 'Marzipan' in the Marshall style--Slackerboy 14:05, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Tabs

I realize that this is a stretch, and I don't want to see this be declined in stuff, but does anyone think that the reasons that the Brother Chaps made the tape at the end yellow is so that the viewers couldn't use the tab buttons to find the easter egg? Rogue Leader / (my talk) 14:40, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Nah. The wall was yellow, the paint was yellow, the Dripping Madness was yellow... It was a predominant theme. The original occurance of 'Cool Tapes' was on a yellow wall, so when Cool Tapes released their songs, they put it on a yellow tape. And anyways, it's not like the Easter eggs in this one were hard to find. --DorianGray
But is the exact right shade of yellow... and they could have used red, too but they chose yella
Yella is a funnier color than red.

Yellow paint screen wipe transition

I think that the yellow paint screen transition is remicient of the old Batman TV shows and similar spoofs. It's like Homestar was being portrayed as the cool-shades-with-dripping-yellow-paint-man super hero for a brief moment in this toon. VL-Tone 17:00, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

They've used that sort of transition various other times on the site though. --Der Pepper

Yes, and it was noted as a nod to Batman when it happened before. --Ookelaylay 16:51, 20 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I think it's too vague to be considered an out-and-out reference. — It's dot com 18:08, 20 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Permission?

How come when I type http://www.homestarrunner.com/coolthings.swf in the Flash Decomplier, an error message always pops up and says something like: "You might not have permission to use this network resource. The above directory name is invalid." Why does it do this? --arrow4.PNG~Rebecca~ RJMT speaker-noise.gif 17:33, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Because you need to save the Flash file, and then open it from your computer locally. 141.157.252.130 19:00, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Snack Food

I'm sure it's not a reference, but the name Dripping Yellow Madness made me think of this snack. -- tomstiff 20:31, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Cool Shades

To me, they look like Dangeresque Too's (Homestar's) glasses, only covered in yellow paint. --Ookelaylay 23:28, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

We have that on STUFF, but it's not a popular fact due to the fact that there have been other glasses on the site that have the same shape but a different design. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 23:46, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Marzipan's teeth?

In the article, it says that "this is the first time Marzipan's teeth are shown." When does she show them? --arrow4.PNG~Rebecca~ RJMT speaker-noise.gif 00:23, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)

When she smiles sheepishly near the very end. — It's dot com 00:25, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I could be mistaken, but in PBTC video that the cheat did for marzipan, i think her teeth show. But I'm sure that doesnt count, since it's not the real Marzipan. Posted by Martin F.

Meow!

Is it "kiddie" or "kitty"? This site says "kitty". This site says "kiddie". Just a quick google seems to split it 50-50. Anyone know for sure? -- tomstiff 14:37, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)

The first one is the right one. The Sonic Youth website never fails. Always with the right lyrics.

Peter Threadbare

I have a feeling the book Marzipan is reading at the beginning of the toon is alluding to something, but I'm not sur.e Does anyone have any ideas? Peter Threadbare does sound like something, but I can't quite put my finger on it...

Google have almost nothing. this search give one result, but not for the writer's full name. this isn't much better. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 13:37, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I found this in Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Peter Goldthwaite's Treasure". I don't know if it's the reference, but: "...and threadbare Peter Goldthwaite. The fact is, Mr. Brown, you must find another site for your brick block....". In general, it sounds like a take on Charles Dickens' titles, like "Barnaby Rugde" or "Edwin Drood". User:What's her face 22:54, 21 Aug 2005

Might be a reference to the character Bobbin Threadbare from the LucasArts computer game LOOM. But I dunno if TBC ever played those games. - Octan

Anyone got an mp3?

Does anyone have an mp3 file of that song? --11wowirocksomuch11

Ask and you shall receive! Check out QotW. -- tomstiff 16:52, 18 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Suddenly to the left

I quite don't get that goof about Homestar suddenly standing to the left of the stand in the next wide shot. I can't see the difference.-^Gordon^

He goes to return the glasses, and it zooms in to the bag of grapes, and when it zooms out again, he is standing a little off to the left. Posted by Martin F.
Look at the word Under in "Under Old Management". At first, Homestar covers the D-E-R. Then, all of the sudden, he's covering the U-N-D. — It's dot com 22:01, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Screenshot

Hey, can somebody get a screenshot of Marzipan grinning with her teeth? Thanks! - Brittany

Thanks to bkmlb for uploading this.

You're wlecome! I was just going to post that on here!! If you wanna know how to make a screenshot, go here --minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 02:07, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for that! Most people are just rude, I mean, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all, or do it yourself, you know? Anyway, thanks! - Brittany

Closed STUFF

Homestar Sawyer

Homestar Runner letting Strong Sad think a "date with a wall" would be fun is a reference to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, in which Tom lets other children think that painting a fence is fun because he doesn't want to do it.

Strong Sad paints Marzipan's House?

The exterior of Marzipan's House was blue the only other time it appeared, in 3 Times Halloween Funjob. Now it's yellow. A reasonable explanation might be that Strong Sad, having no more detailed information than "a wall," painted the outside wall.

The non-dripping yella shades

The Cheats Drummin'

As the Cool Tapes song is finishing, you hear the crash symbol being hit, and yet if you look the Cheat isn't hitting any part of the drumset anymore.

Adding that fact just caused people to speculate that the bag of four grapes made the cymbal sound. That speculation, I thought, canceled out the fact, and it disappeared into nothingness. —BazookaJoe 00:50, 26 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Paint Drips

When the paint drips off of Homestar's glasses, how can it drip at that level, dissapear, and not have him eat it? - Brittany

Maybe he does eat it. — It's dot com 01:19, 26 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Why does he appear to eat it when his mouth is open, but then not when his mouth is closed? Wouldn't his underbite still catch the paint? —BazookaJoe 01:21, 26 Aug 2005 (UTC)

More Dripping Yellow Madness

Anyone else catch that when Homestar's mouth is closed the paint drip vanishes completely halfway down his 'chin'? The Pardack

This is kinda similar to the thread immediately above, but I think it would be an insane amount of work for them to try and do it any other way. In the commentary of lunch special, Mike remarks how Matt went above and beyond in making the garden hose water so detailed, and how he probably wouldn't have put forth nearly so much effort animating it. — It's dot com 22:52, 30 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Uh, all I was trying to ask is; is this note worthy as a goof or is it too easily noticable. But thank you for the, uh, explanation. The Pardack

And all I was trying to say is, no, it's not a goof, because to say that it was would be to hold them to an impossible standard. — It's dot com 05:29, 31 Aug 2005 (UTC)

That's all I needed to hear. The Pardack

Homestar

Homestar saying "What kind of...music do you play?" is a reference to Puppet Homestar and Little Girl. (The pause and question) Cheatachu72 14:09, 4 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Homestar's arms

If you ask me, this toon proves that Homestar is telepathic. If he had invisible arms, it would've had paint on them when he took the Cool Shades out of the can of paint. Imwithcrazy

Dangeresque glasses

Can anyone tell me why the glasses from the Dangeresque series got covered in the yellow paint? The 386 My talk

Because Homestar buys a pair of generic cool shades and three tins of yella paint from Bubs, who slips them into paint-can number 2, thus liberally coating them in yella paint. Evil Egg 19:17, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Tennis

I think references to tennis players should be a running gag, since this is the third time TBC have done so in toons (the first being Homestar dressing up as John McEnroe in 3 Times Halloween Funjob, and the second being Coach Z's voice yelling out "Bjorn Borg" in Sample of Style on the DVD). --Bluelite

A Sequel Maybe?

This is just a minor thing, but I don't think that Strong Bad is watching the same show The Cheat was watching, but rather some sort of sequel. The guy says "...the same truck that tried to kill my dad." This strikes me as a jab at horror movie sequels which simply go down a generation and bring the monster back. Rocketlex 03:48, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Thats what I thought too. — talk Bubsty edits 17:03, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

"Homesar"

Is it me, or does it sound like Strong Sad says "Homesar" when he first starts talking to Homestar? - Almo

Doesn't to me. That wouldn't make any sense anyway. — talk Bubsty edits 21:34, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
Ah, oh well. I could have sworn he didn't pronounce the "t." Thanks for answering. - Almo

Cleanup May 2006

This article becomes a FA in less than 4 hours, and I don't know how much time I have to work on it. Thus, I would appreciate it if the community polished this article to make it a perfect example of what any toon article should look like. Some ideas:

Done Reword fun facts as necessary.
Done Put fun facts in the same order as they happen in the toon.
Done Check up on the transcript. Perhaps perfect its any formatting, punctuation, etc.

Thanks.

Based on Graffiti

That sound similar to the origin of "Smells Like Teen Spirit."--Jnelson09 15:54, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

I copied the above from Talk:Cool Tapes because Jnelson's got a point. I don't know if this is too much of a stretch to live on the page, but I wanted to at least get it registered on the proper Talk page. You can read the full details on Wikipedia, but the short version is that the title of the Nirvana song came from graffiti that a friend had spray painted on Kurt Cobain's wall: "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit". Cobain didn't realize she was referring to a brand of deodorant when he turned it into a song title. --TheNicestGuy 18:07, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

The yellow hole?

I don't see a yellow hole on re-watching the toon. I wouldn't like to remove the glitch just on the basis that I can't see it, but is this perhaps something connected to an old version of Flash? -- Mithent 00:15, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
