There have been many occurrences of Mashing Go/Play throughout the Homestar Runner body of work.  This phrase generally replaces the term "push" or "press" in relation to a button.  In the southern United States (e.g. Georgia, home of The Brothers Chaps), "mash" is actually a common dialect term, so although it has appeared several times in the H*R universe, TBC might not originally have intended for it to become a running gag, as they were probably accustomed to the term. It may, however, be a reference to "button mashing," a style of playing certain video games where one attempts to make attacks as often as possible, with no regard to the tactical appropriateness of those attacks or to forming combos.

And so, The Cheat mashed play on an extremely expensive jambox.

There have been many occurrences of mashing go/play throughout the Homestar Runner body of work. This phrase generally replaces the term "push" or "press" in relation to a button. In the southern United States (including Georgia, home of The Brothers Chaps), this is a common slang usage of the term, so initially the Chaps may have been using the word naturally rather than intending for it to become a recurring gag.
