Homestar is a sketch drawn on lined paper.

Button Effects

Toons — The paper background changes between four different kinds. (Regular lined paper, training paper used in early grades, yellow lined paper and graph paper.)
Games — A circled F appears on the paper with the note, "See me after class."
Characters — The logos of rock bands Van Halen, KISS and Led Zeppelin appear.
Downloads — Homestar's head lifts up.
Store — A post-it note with Strong Bad's head and the message "I rule" is stuck over Homestar's head.
E-mail — A paper football flies by.

The regular paper background is the same used for Teen Girl Squad. The second paper background is the same used for Teen Girl Squad Issue 7, Teeny Tiny Girl Squad.
In the .swf version, a sketch drawn mouse cursor is visible outside the frame.
"Zoso" refers to Led Zeppelin's unnamed fourth album. The symbol represents band member Jimmy Page.
Homestar is drawn in an older style with smaller eyes and a different curve to his lower lip. He is also missing his propeller hat. This and Main Page 12 are the only Main Pages to use the old style Homestar.
Trapper Keeper is a brand-name seller of American binders and notebooks, most of which are prepackaged with this style of paper.
This is the very first, and so far, the only H*R main page that does not have any additional sound effects.
The way the pencil lines quiver is similar to th "Squigglevision" animation style employed on the Comedy Central sitcom Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist.
If you scroll over Store and quickly move it away, you notice Homestar's Mouth never moves.
