Fun Facts

Explanations

  • The way the music fades as it reaches the end of a loop (unlike most other loops on the site) mimics the looping music used on some DVD menus. Due to technical limitations, music used in DVD menus cannot loop and is often faded out similarly to the music used here.
  • Strong Bad's name being in a box in the theatrical trailer is a common tactic used in movie poster credits to highlight the name of a well-known actor who is not top-billed.

Remarks

  • During the scene where Coach Z is giving advice to Homestar, Homestar's star appears as a pentacle — a hollow star drawn with lines across each point. Stars are often drawn this way because it's easier to make them symmetrical.
  • In the third deleted scene (where Strong Mad plays Strong Bad's role), the tattoo on Strong Mad's right arm is of the band Black Flag. He is also wearing a shirt with a megaphone decal on it.
  • The flower that Marzipan is watering is similar to the flower in Coach Z's "bad gift" scenario.
  • Marzipan's handprint seems to indicate that she has invisible arms and hands.
  • Unless Pom Pom had two identical guns, he couldn't have pulled out the gun the second time, because he threw it away.
  • There is no "back" link at the end of the old version.
  • The link to the storyboards no longer works.
  • Despite the Yello Dello's feminine appearance and the fact that it's referred to as a her, it speaks in a male voice.
  • This is the first appearance of Atari 2600 graphics in the Homestar Runner body of work.
  • Strong Sad's pixellated appearance during the montage depicts him with a gray face and white upper body, rather than a white face and grey upper body.

Goofs

  • In the scene where Pom Pom is floating, the dots on Homestar's hat disappear while he talks.
  • In the locker room scene, Coach Z's right foot is cut down by a thin gray line in the middle, showing a mistake in copy and pasting.
  • In the scene where Pom Pom and Homestar are supporting Strong Sad so he can tell his story, Homestar wakes up and slides out from underneath Strong Sad, yet Strong Sad doesn't move (he was previously standing on top of Homestar).
  • In Deleted Scene #1, when the plane hits the barn, the sky will move to the left, exposing a thin white area.

Inside References

  • The goat head that pops out from behind the mountain in Coach Z's "bad gift" scenario also appeared in Audition with Marzipan.
  • This is another reference to goats.
  • In the commentary, Strong Sad reveals that he dreams of his own death (over and over and over...).
  • In the commentary, Homestar accidentally introduces the toon as "the King of Town Super DVD", which references to The King of Town DVD.
  • In the commentary, Strong Bad's saying that he doesn't trust Pom Pom any further than he can throw him is another reference to The King of Town DVD, where SB makes the same quote in the commentary about the little chef guy.
  • Oven mitts appear several times in the DVD.
  • The alien is seen showering.
  • The rating slide in the trailer reads, "EVERYBODY! EVERYBODY!", a reference to Intro.
  • The Australian narrator's line about the Yello Dello being the rarest and most beautiful bird in the cartoon breaks the fourth wall.

Real-World References

  • "Hello Yello Dello" might be a reference to The Three Stooges' quote of "Hello, Hello, Hello! Hello hello hello hello hello!"
  • The deleted scene with the plane is a reference to the Atari 2600 game Barnstorming.
  • In the third deleted scene, Strong Mad sports a Black Flag tatoo.
  • The scene with the scorpion is from the classic Atari 2600 game Pitfall!.
    • The song played at the end of the cartoon is the sound effect from Pitfall for when the player dies.
  • The title may be a reference to the old TV series In Search of..., which was narrated by Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek's Mr. Spock) and detailed the search for various legendary beasts, artifacts, and places (e.g. In Search of Bigfoot, In Search of The Loch Ness Monster, and so on).
  • Mello Yello (mentioned in the third deleted scene) is a brand of soda made by Coca-Cola similar to Mountain Dew.
  • The voice-over that describes the Yello Dello is similar to Steve Irwin, also known as The Crocodile Hunter.
  • "Discover Network" is a reference to Discovery Channel.
  • The obnoxiously loud menu theme is a reference to Pitfall II: Lost Caverns, which also featured incredibly loud music for an Atari game. The menu theme is not the same as that of Pitfall II, but it is very similar.
  • The Yello Dello's manner of eating is a reference to the LucasArts adventure game LOOM, in which a seagull eats a clam in the same way.
  • The character from the Atari 2600 game Yars' Revenge that Homestar mentions in the Commentary is the Yar that you control in the game. In the game you can eat squares off of the Quotile's (the enemy) Shield.

Fast Forward

  • The quote "Oh, Strong Sad! How long have you been standing there?" would be said again by Homestar in The Luau.
  • In the deleted scene, where Homestar and his companions are in the plane, after they fly into the ducks Homestar yells out, "Somebody get this freakin' duck away from me!" This would be later said by Strong Bad relating to the Atari dragon on Main Page 13.
  • The quote, "I think I has the solution" was later said by Strong Bad in little questions.
  • The rating screen in the theatrical trailer is used again in the trailer for Sbemail 169 Deleted Scene.
  • Marzipan's shriek from the Old Version can be heard in the Most in the Graveyard Teaser.

Everything Else Vol. 2 Version

  • Switch the audio in the Old Version to hear commentary from Mike and Matt Chapman and Peter Olsen.
  • The storyboard now has commentary.
  • When played in "Play All", only the New Version is played.
  • An Easter egg is added involving a 4th Deleted Scene.

{Open to a blue background with Michael Stipe's face with a message reading "Deleted Scene #4; 'Yello Dello' featured Strong Sad's first spoken lines in a cartoon. This was the first stab at his voice: Matt's bad Michael Stipe impression. So bad, in fact, that it was never to be heard again". Cut to Strong Sad in a scene from the new version of Yello Dello.}

STRONG SAD: {sounds supposedly like Michael Stipe.} I don't know, Homestar. That looks... really dangerous.
