During the Halloween toons, the characters within the Homestar Runner body of work dress up in costumes in which to go 'trick or treating'. More often than not, such costumes are of an icon or celebrity from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. As a result, at least one character per toon occasionally speaks in dialogue or lines (or moves around) in such a way that somehow pertains to his/her respective costume.

He's the best!

During the Halloween toons, the characters within the Homestar Runner body of work dress up in costumes in which they engage in Halloween-related activities. More often than not, such costumes are of an icon or celebrity, most of which were popular/created in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. As a result, at least one character per toon occasionally speaks in dialogue or lines (or moves around) in such a way that somehow pertains to his/her respective costume.

Contents

Occurrences

Homestarloween Party

• Coach Z — Dressed as Flavor Flav of the rap group Public Enemy; Homestar comments on his costume by saying, "Coach Z is down with the PE". This is a reference to the group's song, "Burn Hollywood Burn", wherein guest-rapper Ice Cube raps "Ice Cube is down with the PE".
• Homestar Runner — Dressed as Kurt Cobain, his T-shirt reads, "Corporate rock still sucks", which is the motto of SST Records, one of Cobain's favorite record labels.
• The Cheat — Dressed as Garfield, he holds his teddy bear, Pooky.

The House That Gave Sucky Treats

• Coach Z — Dressed as Humpty Hump, the rap he performs is from Digital Underground's hit song, "The Humpty Dance," only Coach Z substitutes his own name for Humpty's.
• Marzipan — Dressed as Joey Ramone of the punk rock group, the Ramones, she says, "Hey ho! Let's go!" This is part of the lyrics to their song, "Blitzkrieg Bop", and also both a reference and tribute to Joey after he died earlier in 2001.
• Homsar — Dressed as Popeye comic strip character, J. Wellington Wimpy, who really adores hamburgers, he says, "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for some candy today." This is a parody of Wimpy's catchphrase, "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today."
• Strong Bad — Dressed as Carmen Sandiego, he says, "Where in the world is my candy?" This is a reference to the computer game and TV show that features Carmen, "Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego?"
• Strong Sad — Dressed as Andy Warhol, if you give him the can of Campbell's Soup as his treat, he comments on it as being relevant to what he is dressed as. This is a reference to one of Warhol's most famous paintings, which is of the can of Campbell's Soup, as well as his monotone, deadpan voice, which Strong Sad also has.
• Bubs — Dressed as Mars Blackmon from She's Gotta Have It, his intro at the door is "Please baby, please baby, baby baby please", a reference to Mars' exact same line from that movie.
• Homestar Runner — Dressed as The Greatest American Hero, his trick-or-treating intro is a spoof on the show's theme song.

Pumpkin Carve-nival

• The King of Town — Dressed as famous video game character Mario, he comments that he is a video game (which Marzipan says she wouldn't know, since she doesn't play video games). Later, after Homestar (or rather, Strong Bad dressed up as Homestar) gives him a worst prize, he laments, "Sorry, king, but our princess is in another castle." This is a reference to the first Super Mario Bros. game, in which, after clearing each level (prior to the eighth and final level), the mushroom people Mario saves say, "Thank you, Mario. But our princess is in another castle!" The Super Kingio Bros., an Easter egg at the end, directly mirrors Level 1-1 from Super Mario Bros.
• Strong Mad — Dressed as a ghost, he says something that ghosts would commonly say: "Boo!"

3 Times Halloween Funjob

• The King of Town — Dressed as the Hamburglar, he says that he is "dressed to 'hamburgle'" and even utters the Hamburglar's catchphrase, "Robble-robble!"
• Stinkoman — Dressed as Speed Racer, he declares that he is "a demon on wheels". This is directly lifted from the show's theme song, which describes the title protagonist the same way.
• Strong Mad — Dressed as Magnum P.I., he bellows "Higgins!", who is actually Tom Selleck's boss on that show.
• Strong Sad — Dressed as David Byrne, leader of new wave group Talking Heads, he says, "This is not my beautiful house!" and "This is not my beautiful wife!" These are lyrics from the song, "Once In a Lifetime," by Talking Heads.
• The Poopsmith — Dressed as Street Fighter character, M. Bison, he performs a flaming maneuver. This is actually M. Bison's Psycho Crusher attack.
• Homestar Runner — Dressed as John McEnroe, in an Easter egg, he is seen (in Puppet form) shouting McEnroe's catchphrase, "You can't be serious!"

Halloween Fairstival

• Strong Bad — Dressed as the Joker, he calls his posse his "bad pennies", which is what the Joker calls his henchmen in "The Joker Goes to School" (which was also the origin of the No Loafing sign and the name of Harmless Junk, Inc.). Later, at the end, he says, "Hello, kiddies, a-meet the Joker!". Also of note is the white mustache, a trademark of the original actor, Cesar Romero, who played the Joker on the old Batman TV show, and who refused to shave his off, so the producers just painted over it instead.
• The King of Town — Dressed as the Mayor of Halloweentown from the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, he turns his head around to show a second face with a blue tint and sad expression. The Mayor in the movie changes his face around when his mood changes.
• Homsar — Dressed as Kumar from the movie Bottle Rocket, he says one of the character's most famous lines, "I blew it, man! I lose my touch!"
• Homestar Runner — Dressed as Carl Spackler from the movie Caddyshack, Homestar comments, "So I got that going for me. Which is nice." This was a line spoken by Spackler in that movie.
• Marzipan — Dressed as Willie Nelson; Strong Bad notices this by saying to her, "Hey Marzi, I just can't wait for you to get on the road again... and get hit by a schoolbus." The first part of this line is a reference to the Willie Nelson song "On the Road Again".

Halloween Potion-ma-jig

• Homestar Runner — Dressed as Moocher from the movie Breaking Away, he wears a T-shirt that reads "Cutters", which is a bicyclist group that Moocher is a member of.
• Pom Pom — Dressed as Walter Sobchak from the movie The Big Lebowski, if you select the second option when Homestar meets Pom Pom and Coach Z, Pom Pom will show Homestar a severed toe, which is referenced in this movie. Sobchak even says the line, "I can get you a toe, with nail polish," as does Coach Z on Pom Pom's behalf.
• At the end, "You're entering a world of pain" and "DONNY, YOU'RE OUT OF YOUR ELEMENT!" (said on behalf of Pom Pom by Homestar and Strong Mad, respectively) were also repeated sayings of Sobchak's in the movie. Also, at one point in the movie, Walter inappropriately draws a gun, which is what Pom Pom does during this same scene.
• Coach Z — Dressed as Theo Huxtable from The Cosby Show, he wears the shirt that Theo wore in "A Shirt Story", one of the earliest episodes on the show.
• The King of Town — Dressed as Colonel Sanders, if you select the second option when Homestar meets the King of Town and the Poopsmith, the King of Town's ingredient that Homestar gets is Sanders' secret blend of eleven herbs and spices, which is used in Sanders' recipe for chicken at KFC. In the same option scene, Homestar calls the King of Town, "Your Kentucky Fried-ness".
• Homsar — Dressed as Tingle from the Legend of Zelda series, he throws confetti and is also seen floating on a balloon, both of which Tingle does frequently.
• Strong Bad — Dressed as Jambi the Genie from Pee-wee's Playhouse, he says to The Cheat about Homestar, "Meka-leka-hi-meka-The Cheat, throw a TV on him...ho." This is a reference to Jambi's favorite incantation, "Meka-leka-hi-meka-hiney-ho." Later, when asked of what he is supposed to be, Strong Bad says he's Jambi and even says another of the character's signature lines to prove it: "Wish? Did somebody say 'wish'?"
• The Cheat — Dressed as Toad from the Mario series, the high jump he does is the same one that Toad does when he gets hit in Mario Kart 64, in which Toad's kart also lands with a POOMP. The Cheat also makes some sounds similar to what Toad says when he wins a race ("I'm the best!") as well as Toad's cries when he has been hit.
• Strong Sad — Dressed as a member of Devo, Strong Sad says "Go forward! Move ahead. Try to detect it! It's not too late." These are lyrics from Devo's 1980 hit, "Whip it".
• Marzipan — Dressed as Muppet character Beaker, she says various squeak-like "meeps" that Beaker does (rather like The Cheat).

Happy Hallow-day

• Strong Bad — Dressed as Father Guido Sarducci, he tells Homestar that his being dressed up as a pretend priest-comedian prevents him from beating Homestar up. This "priest-comedian" is played by Don Novello on Saturday Night Live.
• The Cheat — Dressed as Gizmo from the movie Gremlins, when he is told by Strong Sad that he should technically be turning into a horrible beastie by sunlight, he covers his eyes and makes The Cheat noises in imitation of Gizmo's line, "Bright lights! Bright lights!"
• Coach Z — Dressed as Queen Latifah, his costume specifically depicts the person he is portraying as she appeared in her African-inspred music video for "Ladies First".

Jibblies 2

• Strong Mad — Dressed as Nikolai Volkoff, he says he forgot his Ruskie flag (in this case, the flag of the Soviet Union). Volkoff was known for entering the ring carrying a Soviet flag.
• Homestar Runner — Dressed as Artie the Strongest Man In the World, he calls himself "the strongest man... in the world!" in imitation of Artie's catchphrase.
• Marzipan — Dressed as Prince, when she succumbs to the jibblies, Homestar thinks she is playing Raspberry Beret, which was a hit for Prince in 1985. Later, Homestar refers to Marzipan as "The Girlfriend Formerly Known as Marzipan", a reference to one of Prince's nicknames, "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince".
• Strong Sad — Dressed as the fat kid from The Far Side, he makes his mouth into an O shape as he says "Ooh" when dealing Pom Pom a card and at the end of the toon. This is done often by the fat kid along with many Far Side characters.
• Bubs — Dressed as Ross from You Can't Do That On Television; when Marzipan does not know what his costume is, some green slime pours all over her head. On that show, whenever a cast member said the phrase "I don't know," green slime would pour from the ceiling onto their head.
• Strong Bad's follow-up line: "I heard that!", is lifted from the cook on that show, who was played by the same actor as Ross.
• The Poopsmith — Dressed as Doc Brown from Back to the Future, Homestar explains that "Where The Poopsmith's going, he doesn't need good smells," a reference to one of Doc's most famous quotes, "Where we're going, we don't need roads."

Most in the Graveyard

• Strong Mad — Dressed as a Thwomp; at one point, Strong Bad calls him, "Thwomp Mad". He also jumps and shakes the ground in the same manner as Thwomp.
• Homsar — Dressed as Captain Caveman, when he says, "I'm Captain Caveman of the graveyard train!", he draws out the "Caveman" part in imitation of Captain Caveman's catchphrase: "Captain CAAAAAAAVEMAAAAAAANNNN!!!!"
• The Poopsmith — Dressed as Dr. Zoidberg; the King of Town's line when the Poopsmith is clicked on at toon's end refers to the catchphrase spoken by Prof. Farnsworth, who employs Dr. Zoidberg.
• Coach Z — Dressed as DJ Lance Rock, at one point, he says, "Yooooooooooorrr garble garble!", which is Coach Z for "Yo Gabba Gabba!".
• Marzipan — Dressed as Stevie Ray Vaughan; Homestar's line to her, "My little pride and joy," refers to Vaughan's song, Pride and Joy, which was released on Vaughan's album Texas Flood.
• Strong Sad — Dressed as Sam Kinison, he shouts his last line in the Strong Bad Easter egg in the style of a typical antic of Sam Kinison's comedy act.
• Bubs — Dressed as The Junkyard Dog, his Easter egg lines are from the Junkyard Dog's entrance theme, "Grab Them Cakes".

Doomy Tales of the Macabre

• The King of Town — Dressed as Colonel Mustard, he is accused by Strong Bad of eating the colonel's mustard, and the rope (which the King holds), and the parlor. Part of this statement (namely, the rope and the parlor) refers to what weapon is used in a murder and where said murder took place in the game Clue.
• Marzipan — Dressed as Lola from Run Lola Run; Strong Bad encourages her to "Run, Marzipan, Run — off of a cliff, preferably." Marzipan responds in German. Run Lola Run is a German film.
• Homestar Runner — Dressed as Crispin Glover as Rubin Farr, Homestar quotes Glover's infamous Letterman interview, where Glover was acting in-character as Rubin.
• Bubs — Dressed as Jules Winnfield from Pulp Fiction, he claims that he has some "brains" in his wig and that his wallet says "Bad business practices". Both refer to scenes in the movie.
• Pom Pom — Dressed as a Pooka; the Poopsmith inflates him and he blows up, referencing how Pookas are killed in the game.
• The Poopsmith — Dressed as Darunia; Homestar hums Saria's Song from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the Poopsmith dances along, as Darunia did in his game.
• Homsar — Dressed as Little Orphan Annie, his line refers to "Punjab", a recurring character from that comic strip.
• The Cheat — Dressed as Dr. Seuss's The Lorax, he picks himself up with one hand and leaves behind some rocks saying "Unless". The Lorax left the same way.
• Strong Mad — Dressed as Sal from the music video for Money for Nothing, he quotes the song with "MOVE-A MOVE-A!"
• Strong Bad — Dressed as the Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, he mockingly comments that the moon is going to crash into the Earth, and how this isn't at all frustrating in a video game. The moon crashing into the planet is exactly what Link attempts to prevent in Majora's Mask, and as Strong Bad says this, a face flashes on the moon that matches the face on the moon in Majora's Mask.

Which Ween Costumes?

• Homestar Runner — Dressed as the Alien Super Being from Christmas on Mars, he sings a song similar to "Do You Realize??" which was performed by The Flaming Lips, which consisted of that movie's director and a few of its cast members.
• Strong Sad — Dressed as Ralphie Parker from A Christmas Story, Strong Bad says the pink bunny pajamas make him look like a "deranged Easter Bunny" and a "pink nightmare", which Ralphie's father said Ralphie's pajamas made him look like.
• Strong Bad — Dressed as the fragile leg lamp from A Christmas Story, The King of Town expresses hope that the Bumpus's dogs, belonging to one of the Parkers' neighbors, knock Strong Bad over.
• Strong Mad — Dressed as the Abominable Snowman from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, he moves in a jerky fashion similar to that of the special's stop motion puppets. Homestar says his animation is "so Rankin/Bass", referencing the studio that produced Rudolph.
• The King of Town — Dressed as the Heat Miser from The Year Without a Santa Claus, he quotes the song the Heat Miser performed in that special.

I Killed Pom Pom

• Homestar Runner — Dressed as Tobias Fünke from the show Arrested Development, after he enters Marzipan's house, a blue hand print can be seen on the wall, just as many blue hand prints can be seen on the walls of the Bluth household after Tobias has painted his entire body blue.
• Marzipan — Dressed as Tom Servo from the show Mystery Science Theater 3000, she suggests to Strong Sad that they both watch a bad horror movie while making snappy comments and obscure references. This is basically what Tom Servo did in every episode of MST3K; he was forced to watch low-quality B-movies with his friend Joel, and they both made snarky comments about the films to pass the time.
• Strong Bad — Dressed as McDonald's character Mac Tonight, at the end, he parodies the McDonald's version of "Mack the Knife" used for its "Mac Tonight" advertising campaign.

The House That Gave Sucky Tricks

• Strong Mad — Dressed as the TiVo logo, an Easter egg has Strong Mad fast-forward Homestar's speech while making sound effects similar to an actual TiVo.
• Homestar Runner — Dressed as H.I. McDunnough from Raising Arizona, Homestar and Bubs both quote that movie in an Easter egg.
• Marzipan — Dressed as Captain EO, an Easter egg contains two references to his original actor, Michael Jackson. Homestar recalls that Marzipan previously dressed as "The Prince of Pop", mixing up Prince and Michael's title "The King of Pop". After the King of Town corrects Homestar, he responds, "Ohhh, the kid is not his son", quoting the Michael Jackson song "Billie Jean".
• The King of Town — Dressed as Devil's Tower mashed potatoes from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, an Easter egg has the King repeat Roy Neary's comments about the potato mountain: "I mean something! I'm important!"

• The Poopsmith — Coach Z says "Like Flaming Glorbs!" in response to The Poopsmith's costume of Sigmund from the Seinfeld episode The Heart Attack.

• Strong Sad — Dressed as Hercule Poirot, he tries (and fails) to practice his French accent declaring the detective's name. He also single-handedly solves the mystery of the haunted photo booth in a manner befitting the famous sleuth.
• Coach Z — As PaRappa the Rapper, he recites his tag line "I gotta believe" and makes a series of cut-out animated movements reflecting the way Parappa moves.
• Strong Bad — Dressed as BOB, he says the lines "How's Annie?" and "Smiling Bag!" which refer to the source of his costume, Twin Peaks.
• Bubs — Dressed as Grunkle Stan from Gravity Falls, and introduced as the ThnikkaStan, he tells Soos's Abuelita, a character from the same cartoon (voiced by Matt Chapman), to shut up.
• Pom Pom — With Pom Pom dressed as Violet Beauregarde, The King of Town tells Pom Pom he would take Pom Pom to the juicing room, an event that occurred in the film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory to Violet. The King also expresses that he would prefer that Pom Pom would have dressed up as Augustus Gloop, another character from the story.
• The King of Town — In response to the King's costume of Alice from the "Don't Come Around Here No More" video, Strong Bad says the King was mistaken in choosing his costume and that he actually meant "Don't come around here no more!"
• The Cheat — He writes the words "Giant Gold Tooth" and one spontaneously appears, much like his character, Maxwell, is able to summon objects in Scribblenauts.
• Marzipan — Gives an "invisible flair deuce" and declares she doesn't need 37 pieces of flair to do it, which is what her character, Joanna, does in the film Office Space.

Mr. Poofers Must Die

• Homestar Runner — As Dirk the Daring from Dragon's Lair, Homestar goes through a number of movements his video game persona goes through over the course of his adventure, then collapses into a pile of bones.
• Strong Bad — As Viewtiful Joe, he uses the catchphrase "Henshin a go-go, baby!" and moves his long scarf around the way Viewtiful Joe does.
• Marzipan — Marzipan is dressed as J. Mascis, and although she herself doesn't do anything costume-specific, Strong Sad uses the names of J. Mascis's albums in a dialogue with her.
• The Cheat — As a Korok, he makes sounds and movements imitating the creatures.
• Strong Sad — As Tummi Gummi from Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears, he also does not do anything costume-specific, but Homestar references Tummi Gummi's voice actor's other roles, such as Peter Venkman and Garfield.
• Strong Mad — As Kano from Bad Company, he tries to explain that he is related to Judge Dredd, but Strong Bad insists that no one knows who he is dressed as.
• The King of Town — Carries a box of Little Debbie brand Star Crunches as part of his Little Debbie costume.
• Bubs — With Bubs dressed as Stan S. Stanman from the Monkey Island series, Coach Z asks Bubs if he can sell him some previously-owned vessels. Bubs replies by waving his arms wildly without the pattern of his plaid jacket moving, the way Stan does.

The Homestar Runner Enters the Spooky Woods

• The Cheat — Dressed as Little Caesar, he says "Cheatsa Cheatsa" in a similar intonation to the mascot's "Pizza Pizza".
• Bubs — After Homestar misidentifies Bubs's costume of Commander Borf from Space Ace, Homestar collapses much like both the previous Halloween toon and Dragon's Lair, another Bluth-animated game.
• Strong Mad — As Pink Floyd The Wall, he yells "Syd Barrett", a founding member of Pink Floyd, and "Wizard of Oz", in reference to the "Dark Side of the Rainbow" theory regarding the Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. However, Strong Bad notes the anachrony of his references.
• Pom Pom — As Burt the Bashful from Yoshi's Island, he turns into a sprite and spins much like Burt does in his death animation.
• Homsar — As a Bill from Schoolhouse Rock!, he corrupts a line from "Conjunction Junction", another segment from the series.
• Marzipan — Though she admits she doesn't know Galaxy Express 999, the origin of her Maetel costume, Strong Sad says he liked the "pirate guy", referring either to Emeraldes, the captain of the Queen Esmeraldes, or Captain Harlock, ruler of the Time Castle, both of whom have recurring roles in creator Leiji Matsumoto's works.
