Biography

Homsar is nonsense incarnate. He was created in the second Strong Bad Email when Vinnie C. misspelled "Homestar" and suggested that Strong Bad kill him. Strong Bad "killed" Homsar by dropping a large weight on him, but The Brothers Chaps must have ended up liking the little guy and upgraded his condition from dead to seriously injured. Upon his recovery, he called Marzipan in Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 5.0, thanking her for the flowers she had sent to him in the hospital, though he still couldn't feel his legs.

He resides primarily in Easter eggs (e.g., Homsar Main Page, his character tape, Downloads easter egg, etc.), but sometimes he'll appear in a regular toon or Strong Bad Email. He is often quoted by Homestar Runner fans, as his few appearances are often accompanied by cute and amusing little sayings.

Usually, Homsar's speech is valid syntactically but not semantically: Though his sentences are as grammatically correct as anyone else's, the things he says are rarely useful or meaningful to anybody (except himself, presumably), making him notoriously difficult to converse with. In the email interview, Strong Bad claims to not be able to talk to the guy for more than three seconds before he starts thinking that gnawing his own leg off might be a better way to spend his time, and in Where's the Cheat?, Bubs said to Homsar, "don't you talk to me".

Regardless, he appears to be a very social creature, often showing up at parties or dialing up other characters on the phone, and he seems to always be aware of his context on some level (though his "grasp on the world around him" appears to be looser than Homestar's loosest). Most of the time, he seems to forget, or not know (or perhaps disregard altogether) the names of those around him and assigns them random nicknames instead. He seems to be friends with Strong Sad (or at least the only person who'll hang around with him), but Homestar seems to despise him as he consistently disrespects him when the two appear together in various Halloween toons. Homsar serves in the Homestarmy and is the host of his own children's show: Whaddaya Know, Haddi-Man?. Nothing is known about his past, though Strong Bad once claimed on Homsar's behalf that he was "raised by a cup of coffee".

Homsar is quite an accomplished costume maker, having appeared in several Halloween Toons and also having competed in the Strong Sad Look-Alike Contest, where he looked so much like Strong Sad that he was disqualified by Coach Z. Also, during the holidays, Homsar sets up a donation site (much like the Salvation Army) using a can of baked beans and a paintbrush that gongs like a bell. The fact that the paintbrush actually sounds seems to be a projection of Homsar's characteristic personal illogic onto the rules of his environment. Further evidence of Homsar's apparent immunity to the laws of conventional physics is his inexplicable ability to remain upside down or sideways for prolonged periods, whilst in mid-air no-less; as well as being able to move unhindered around the border of the screen. In addition to this, he also seems to be able to freely duplicate himself, as was displayed in the 4Tst Annual Fall Float Parade.

{The background is upside-down throughout the video, with the blue sky on the bottom of the screen and the green grass at the top.}

HOMSAR: AaAaAaAaAaAaA! Hi, Wonder Mike! I'm Homsar! The captain of the gravy train. {bowler hat pops up and turns into a train conductor's hat} Climb aboard! {hat returns to normal} I've brought my best foot flowered... Pshoooo! (Homsar's hat slides down the back of his head, then snaps back once the "Pshoooo!" sound is over) Sure beats breaking up with me. Don't look now! I'm just a friendly reminder. AaAaAaAaAaAaA! AaAaAaAaAaAaA! {spins around the screen backwards and ends up at the top, upside down} Think I won the Powerball.

Fun Facts

  • "Wonder Mike" is a member of The Sugarhill Gang, famous for the song "Rapper's Delight." In the beginning of "Rapper's Delight", Wonder Mike says "I am Wonder Mike and I'd like to say hello", so Homsar saying "Hi, Wonder Mike" could possibly be a response.
  • "Think I won the Powerball" is a reference to the multistate Powerball Lottery, which is known for having large jackpots.
  • Homsar's character page is the only one with background music.
  • Homsar's nonsensical but grammatically correct dialogue is evidence of a trait found in some mental illnesses, and may be either Word Salad or Receptive Aphasia.
  • Since the camera is presumably upside-down throughout his character video, Homsar starts the video upside-down and ends it right-side-up. He "stands on air" again in the long toon A Folky Tale as an Easter egg.
  • Mr. Shmallow and Nibbles make the same walking noise as Homsar.
  • In most Halloween Toons, Homsar is usually unlocked by something to do with The Poopsmith.
