This article is about the game. For the character, see Homestar Runner.
"Actually, I don't think it's your face you should be worried about showing."

Homestar Ruiner is the first episode of the Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People video game series. It has been rated T by the ESRB for Crude Humor, Mild Cartoon Violence, and Mild Suggestive Themes. Story written by Mike Stemmle and The Brothers Chaps.

While Strong Bad is going about his usual routine — checking emails, etc. — Homestar Runner tells him about the Tri-annual Race to the End of the Race. Once Strong Bad hears of Homestar's intention to win this contest, he schemes to snatch victory from Homestar's invisible grasp. But when his scheme backfires, he finds his house invaded by Homestars unwilling to face the world again. Strong Bad has to repair Homestar's status if he ever wants to be free of his presence.

[edit] Easter Eggs

  • Enter the photo booth, interact with the top of the light closest to The Cheat. After the pointer changes shape, keep holding down the interaction button and drag the shirt onto Strong Bad to wear it.
    • The shirt can also be obtained by walking off the right side of the photo booth three times, causing Strong Bad to walk under the floor. When he walks directly under the door and out of view, a sound will play, and he'll be wearing the shirt when he comes back into view.
  • After prank calling everybody with Homestar's cell phone, Homsar can be prank called.

[edit] Fun Facts

[edit] Explanations

  • When digging for the Teen Girl Squad idea at the Track, Strong Bad says "Xie xie!" (rendered as "Hsieh hsieh!" by the game's subtitles). This is Mandarin (simplified Chinese characters: 谢谢, traditional Chinese characters: 謝謝) for "Thank you!". The Game's subtitles render this phrase using the obsolete Wade-Giles romanization, which was mostly abandoned in favor of Hanyu Pinyin.
  • A Sadie Hawkins dance (mentioned by Strong Bad after he trims the hedge in The Field) is a dance where females invite male dates, rather than the other way around.
  • When listening to The Best of Brit-Pout, the Nineties Years, Homestar says "I just can't stop gazing at my shoes". Shoegazing was a genre of music in the UK during the '80s and '90s.

[edit] Trivia

  • The Wii Title ID is WBXx, where x is the region code (E for United States, P for Europe).
  • One of the entries in the "Special Thanks" in the game's end credits is for this wiki itself.
  • This is the only SBCG4AP episode to not receive an E10+ rating.

[edit] Remarks

  • This is one of the few times a character mentions Free Country, USA. The last time this occurred was when Strong Bad said it in flashback.
  • An attempt to use the microwave in-game will result in a note that the door is stuck shut. However, at a certain point in the game, Homestar will open it without any problem--even while Strong Bad is in the middle of saying it's stuck shut.
  • Throughout the game, The Paper accompanies as part of the in-game menu rather than New Paper.
  • A different font is used for the Lappy 486 rather than its regular font, Glitch0.
  • After Homestar leaves Strong Bad's kitchen, he leaves his chef hat on top of the microwave. And when Strong Bad takes it as a costume item, he describes it as "awesome". Although in narrator, where the hat first appeared, both Strong Bad and Marzipan say it's dorky.
  • If the player resets the race tape before stealing the record, the King of Town makes no move to capture "Homestar" even though there still is a nudity charge against him.
    • Similarly, the player can still hear and see the King of Town after he has fallen into a hole if Marzipan apologizes to Homestar before the other two criteria are completed.
  • If the player fails to beat Coach Z's time, Coach will say that he'll have to keep the trophy for another 3 years. However, the race is referred to as being "tri-annual", meaning "occurring three times a year", rather than "triennial", which would mean "once every three years."
  • If the player places Total Load in Strong Mad's locker and then has Coach Z check the lockers, a scene plays where Coach Z briefly chastises Strong Mad for using it, as it is intended for him to use it "only on Tuesdays." However, according to the calendar in Strong Bad's computer room, the episode supposedly does take place on a Tuesday.
  • Homsar has a strangely long number (28 digits), similar to that of Senor Mortgage (31 digits).

[edit] Goofs

  • At the non-garden party, the rollover for Marzipan and Homestar is spelled "MARZIPAN & HOMSETAR". This goof is only present in the Wii version.
  • In Strong Bad's photo booth there is a clickable area above the camera. Clicking here turns the cursor into the Max shirt from the Telltale store (also occasionally chosen at random as Young Sam's costume in Sam and Max Episode 202: Moai Better Blues and Episode 204: Chariots of the Dogs). However, when put on Strong Bad, the shirt is yellow and has a picture of Nutter the squirrel from Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures on it.
  • The subtitles are incorrect in several places:
    • When kicking the Cheat into the dryer, one of the subtitles misspells "Pixelated" (in "Holy Pixelated Trogdor!") as "Pixilated". While "pixilated" is a real word meaning "mentally unbalanced", it seems more likely that he was referring to Trogdor's low-resolution graphics in the arcade game and Peasant's Quest.
    • Homestar Runner sings "Do do-do do dooo dooo, do do-do do dooo" but the subtitles say "Do do-do do dooo dooo, do do-do do dooo dooo".
    • While Strong Bad says "some French guy said I should beat you up", the subtitles quote him as saying "some French guy said that I should beat you up".
    • While most abbreviations have an apostrophe, no apostrophe is transcribed when Homestar says "puddin sack".
    • After Strong Bad beats Coach Z's time in the Race to the End of the Race, he says that, "Pom Pom's time is better than you'll ever do," but is subtitled as, "Pom Pom's time is better than you'll ever ever do."
    • In several responses from the Drive-Thru Whale, the "O" in "Blubb-O's" is lowercase.
    • When the Drive-Thru Whale says "'Nurer' spelled backwards is 'rerun.'" the word "in" is transcribed rather than "is".
    • During Marzipan's answering machine message, the word "polluted" is misspelled as "poluted" in the subtitles.
    • When Strong Bad finds the last page of the Snake Boxer V manual, the subtitles refer to the "SECRET FROBIDDEN LEVEL".
    • In one of the possible insults Strong Bad can say to Bubs, the word "arm" is misspelled as "armed."
    • In viewing the sign on Bubs' Concession Stand, Strong Bad begins a sentence with "If I ever had any money" but the subtitles start it with "And if I ever had any money".
    • During one comment about the banner on Marzipan's gazebo, Strong Bad says "in which case" but the word "which" was left out in the subtitles.
    • As Strong Bad comments that Snake Boxer 5 is "so much better than the unfortunate Snake Boxer 4: Lady Snake Parade" there is an unnecessary comma after the word "unfortunate".
    • One of Bubs' lines advertising his stand has the subtitles read "Everybody wanna to buy something" for "Everybody wanna buy something".
    • After Pom Pom cleans out his locker, Strong Bad will comment that Coach Z was serious when he told Pom Pom to clean out his locker, only the subtitles read "clear out his locker".
  • Marzipan's mouth occasionally faces the wrong side of her head (away from Strong Bad and the direction she is facing) during conversations.
  • If Marzipan's hedge is trimmed while she's inside after seeing the Homestar float ruined, she will speak to Strong Bad about the hedge but won't be there.
  • Clicking the calendar in Extended Play causes Strong Bad to say that it's "the day [he gets that] stupid party out of [his] house" when the party isn't even there.
  • It's possible for Strong Bad to dig up what he refers to as "another" missing Teen Girl Squad notecard, even if he hasn't found any before that one.

[edit] Glitches

Tech Shirt Glitch.
  • If the subtitles are turned off, they will be erroneously enabled when Strong Bad checks his email. They will remain enabled afterwards until Strong Bad leaves his house, although the Settings screen will show them as Off. Toggling them on and off again under the Settings will rectify the problem.
  • Sometimes the pixels on naked Homestar will be transparent. When this happens the player will notice that all the pixels were covering was his shirt.
  • While wearing the tech shirt in extended play near Strong Bad's house (and a few other locations) geometry issues will occur, resulting in what looks like a blue wall shooting out from the shirt.
  • If the Luxa Lounger is extended (when it is unextended) and the radio set to the Latin music in Extended Play, the conga line will re-form even though it won't move.
    • When the Luxa Lounger is set back, the conga line will disappear, but Homestar, Marzipan, Coach Z, Bubs and the King of Town will appear where they were when the party was still going on. These characters cannot be selected, and Strong Bad can walk right through them.
  • As Strong Bad wears the Homestar head, it is sometimes invisible, so Strong Bad grabs nothing.
  • During the Teen Girl Squad comic, if Strong Bad kills off the other three girls before the game scene (give So and So the book, What's Her Face the car keys, and either Cheerleader or The Ugly One the cockroach) and the last girl the hairspray, in the game scene Basketballa will kill her with FUNDAMENTALS! and the It's Over! screen will play. However, when Strong Bad tells the player their score, instead of staying on the It's Over! screen, it will revert back to the scene of Basketballa being shocked that he killed a girl.
  • Some characters' eyes, including Strong Bad's, may occasionally disappear. When this occurs, the eyes will remain gone until the player leaves the area.
  • If Strong Bad tries sneaking into the Hall of Records in extended play, the Poopsmith will remain frozen after shoveling the first pile of whatsit until he spots Strong Bad.
  • If Strong Bad prank calls someone with Homestar's phone while in Strong Badia, the flag may grow to an enormous size, and remain so after the call is over.

[edit] Wii Version

  • If the Wii or Wii U's widescreen mode is turned on, talking to Coach Z in extended play results in the game freezing, requiring a hard reset. In addition, many of the cutscenes that play throughout the game will sometimes freeze, also requiring a hard reset.
  • After Strong Bad plays Snake Boxer 5, the background changes from the TV to the Computer Room before resuming Strong Bad's standing-up animation.
  • If the game is saved while in the photo booth while wearing a shirt and then immediately turned off, then when the game is resumed only the collar of the shirt will be visible.
  • If the player repeatedly presses B during the ending cutscene/credits, Strong Bad will teleport to the computer room. The player can move the pointer during this period, but cannot do anything else and must reset.
  • While the people are throwing a party at Strong Bad's house, he can go through The King of Town's body while he's eating pizza. If the player tries to take a picture of Strong Bad through the King of Town's body, the game will freeze, forcing a hard reset.
  • When the King of Town is presenting the trophy to Strong Bad after winning the race, the game will freeze, forcing the player to do a hard reset. This only occurs in widescreen.
  • If Strong Bad deletes all the emails and then undeletes them, the first email (the one Strong Bad is answering in the game) will not be shown in the inbox and the trash will still indicate that there is an email in there even when it is empty. This is solved by restarting the game.
  • When Strong Bad walks up to The Poopsmith while in The King of Town's Castle, Strong Bad's face goes through The Poopsmith when being captured.

[edit] PC Version

  • Occasionally, Homestar's, Marzipan's, Bubs's, The Cheat's, Coach Z's, Strong Mad's, Strong Sad's, or Strong Bad's eyes are not visible upon entering an area. The same may also occur with Strong Mad's and Marzipan's mouths.
  • Sometimes, when the player starts up the game, part of it will go offscreen and reappear on the screens other side (e.g. the menu's top part being on the bottom of the screen and the bottom of the menu on the top screen portion.)
  • If the player taps repeatedly to their touchscreen monitor while talking to a character, the game will freeze until they stop or, occasionally, make the computer crash.

[edit] Fast Forward

  • The Municipality's prominence in the second SBCG4AP episode, Strong Badia the Free is foreshadowed when their poster appears in the locker room and when their logo appears on the Lappy 486's monitor at the end.
    • The next episode's events are further foreshadowed in extended play, when The King of Town threatens to tax Strong Bad.
  • The intro song mentions that Strong Bad's style shines like "An imploding star... a burning car". A puzzle in Baddest of the Bands features both an imploding star and a burning car, as noted by Strong Bad.
