Re-confirming E-mail address
Ever since the upgrade, I am finding it difficult to email anyone via the wiki's E-mail this user link. For some reason, the system thinks that none of the email adresses have been authenticated, thus requiring everyone to visit Preferences. Under the "Email" portion of "User data" one will find a way to have a new e-mail address confirmation sent. I am fairly sure this has affected all users. 14:07, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Is it possible to fix this without the workaround? I like having my talk page on my watchlist. It's frustrating to have to unwatch it each time I get a new message. Speaking of this, it now seems impossible to add my talk page to my watchlist. I click "watch," but nothing changes. (Speaking of watchlists, regular talk pages have become temporarily separated from their article pages. If I want to reestablish the connection between the two, I have to manually unwatch and then re-watch the article.) &mdash; It's dot com 13:33, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

Here's something that's driving me mad. When you watch your talkpage, the new message sitemessage won't go away, right? So I unwatch it. The thing is, everytime I get a new message, it starts watching it again by itself. I looked, but it didn't seem like this problem was addressed here. Any suggestions? 22:15, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
 +
 +
:It looks like the way the talk page is added to the watchlist has been changed. First of all, you no longer can manually add it to your watchlist. If someone sends you a message, your talk page is automatically watched. When you check your talk page, it is automatically unwatched (now that the bug above has been fixed). I don't know whether this is a separate bug or an intentional new feature. &mdash; It's dot com 01:55, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Nifty stuff

The "Edit diff." feature sounds fortuitous. I'm not sure I understood the permalink business, though. —notstrongorbad 06:37, 8 Oct 2005 (UTC)

For instance, the current revision of the fanstuff Main Page is rev 119031. With 1.4 and earlier, it is not possible to have a link that would always display what was on the page at the time that you viewed it, as the current link in 1.4 just has an oldid of 0. That link will always take you to the current version, which may have been updated since the time you linked to the article. This is important when someone would want to cite an article for research and so forth. -- Tom 07:03, 8 Oct 2005 (UTC)
I'm looking forward to the 'Print' tab I've heard about. I'm always up for a new tab. And the move log sounds kinda nifty. I am gonna miss that maintenance page though, *sniff*. I fondly remember searching for double redirects. Is the upgrade probably gonna be finished by Monday morning, NA time? Or are we probably gonna be late updating the Wiki for the Monday update? When no one was looking late last night, I did a complete dry run and everything worked as expected. It didn't take more than a few hours, and I think I'll be able to shave a few minutes off that because of some of the prepping I've been doing. I expect that everything will be done by Monday barring anything drastic happening. Who knows, I could have a dozen ninjas bust in through my window and I'd have to fight them off instead. -- Tom 21:01, 8 Oct 2005 (UTC)
What, you mean again? But I called them off the last time! Elcool (talk)(contribs) 21:05, 8 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Just for the record, I was looking. But I didn't really see anything I understood. I'm pretty sure I didn't see any ninjas, though. (And yeah, that was prettydanglate, especially for EST; don't ask me why I was awake!) —notstrongorbad 21:19, 8 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Don't forget pirates. Ninjas and Pirates. Well, looking forward to it. See all y'alls on the 1.5 flipside. Thunderbird 21:21, 8 Oct 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Logo is messed up

While I am searching the wiki some times tho hrwiki logo in the top-left corner of the screen turns to the mediawiki flower logo with a message saying: "set #wgLogo to the URL parh to your own logo image". Is the hrwiki logo not set up properly? Matt 15:47, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Okay, that was a problem where the Wiki was in two places at once for a little while. I don't know how people made it into the "/new" directory, but this is all fixed now. -- Tom 16:16, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Images

A few images will not display correctly, but fixing them is simple. They just need to be re-uploaded.

20051007_broken_fanstuff_image_example.png

Steps to reupload image:

  1. Find broken image
  2. Go to image description page
  3. Click on direct image link. In the example to the right, this is "ZipZap_OldSchool.png".
  4. Save this image to your computer.
  5. Click on the "Upload a new version of this file" link on the image description page.
  6. Browse to the location that you saved the image and re-upload the file, making sure to click the "Save file" button when the upload warning appears.

Thanks. -- Tom 10:20, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Table of Contents

I know this sounds kind of petty, but the table of contents toggle link for every page is undefined and will not perform its script. — Lapper (talk) 13:59, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Okay, one user ran into this problem on the Fanstuff wiki. I think it might have something to do with your JavaScript settings. See this discussion for details. -- Tom 16:19, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
It's not a client-side problem. The scripts for the TOC link here are broken on so many levels I don't know where to begin...
  • The pages have the script
    if (window.showTocToggle) { var tocShowText = "show"; var tocHideText = "hide"; showTocToggle(); }
    and this has the function
    function showTocToggle(show,hide) {
    - it's not passing the parameters correctly to the function.
  • The showTocToggle function uses document.write() - in the age of DOM this is almost a capital offence for a site that tries to be standards compliant.
  • The showTocToggle function checks that the DOM functions exist and bails out of they don't. This makes the previous point even worse because it shows the writer knew about DOM. But then it fails to use them at all in the script.
However the corresponding fanstuff scripts work properly - perhaps you could just copy the function over? --phlip TC 17:17, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
I'd love to try that, but the functions look exactly the same in those two files. I don't get it... -- Tom 17:35, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Hmm, it seems someone copied it over already... might have been a caching issue at my end. Though I swear when I checked as I wrote that post the script for this site looked something like
function showTocToggle(show,hide) {
  if (document.getElementById) {
    document.write("something... I forget exactly what, but it wasn't working");
  }
}
--phlip TC 17:40, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Okay, so it's some kind of cache problem then. Good investigating Philip, thanks. -- Tom 17:46, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Can't log in

This is mibluvr13 here and I can't seem to log in. I kept typing mibluvr13, but it acted like there was no such username. So I put my password in twice and my email and made a "new" username, which showed up as Mibluvr13. Help?

This is computerdude33. I'm having the exact same "no username found" error.
My user name is red, there's nothing in it, and I acidently clicked the email me a new password and the one that was sent doesn't work!--bkmlb
Okay, I feared this happening. Users with lowercase first letters can no longer login. I don't think there's any way I can fix this. There should be a way that I can transfer your contribs to another username, I think, but I'm going to have to look into that. Sorry. -- Tom 16:24, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
But, Bkmlb is a troll impersonator, so what should I do?--bkmlb
You have any other username ideas? -Computerdude33
Okay, now, I'm Bkmlb. with the period. --Bkmlb. 16:42, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Can we now move our old pages to new pages?--Bkmlb. 16:50, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Sure. -- Tom 17:14, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
If you want to nip that 'period at the end of your name' in the bud, give JoeyDay a ring, and get him to delete the 'Bkmlb' username. I would think Tom could do it too, but they're your only two options, I think. Thunderbird 17:22, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

One way to fix this would be to go into the database and edit any user with a lowercase first letter's user_name field and capitalize the first letter. - porplemontage

Hmm. Hey Steve, you up for being the test case for this one? -- Tom 17:32, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Go for it. -porplemontage
Okay, you are now "Porplemontage" in the database and you should be able to login without a problem. Now it should be as simple as moving your userpage to the new name, me thinks. -- Tom 17:49, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Okay, your contribs need to be moved, and I'm going to work on that now. -- Tom 17:51, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I just noticed that too. Other than my contributions and my userpage names everything seems to be intact. --Steve (talk) 17:56, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Okay. Also, I just found this extension which I'm going to give a try. Let's see how it goes... -- Tom 18:00, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Sigs need fixing too after all this. Any sig subpages seem to become redirects, so you have to edit the old sigpage to just a usual sig, and leave it at that. Bkmlb and I just went through the whole thing at his talk page. Thunderbird 18:04, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Is there anyway I can get my watchlist back too? No way I'll ever remember all the pages I had on there. -- Mibluvr13 19:16, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Main Page

Some thing's happened to the Main Page. I'd say trolling, but its protected. The "templates" are all messed up, but I'm checking again. -FaceCrap 15:20, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

In the last minute, things have really gotten messed up! It's as if the site's being pulled into a reality warping vortex! ABORT!! -FaceCrap 15:28, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Okay, maybe not. I still better go. Maybe. -FaceCrap 15:31, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
There's some discussion here leading me to believe that at one point many of the templates pointed to a directory called "new" for some time. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 15:33, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Ah! Almost all of the sbemail links are red!!--bkmlb (password problem, not logged in)
This is also because you guys ended up in the "/new" directory some how. It's fixed now, as you can't get there any more. -- Tom 16:20, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Capitalisation

I think I've pinpointed a source to one of the problem: everything that begins with a lowercase letter is being sent to a version with a capital letter. So, for example, the email 'pom pom' redirects to 'Pom pom' (which is his character page. It even affects users (which may be why some people can't log in). I'm sure you've noticed this yourself, but I thought I'd point it out anyway. Just to help. --DorianGray

This is also because you ended up in the "/new" directory some how. It's fixed now, as you can't get there any more. -- Tom 16:21, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Watchlists

No biggie, but my (and likely everybody else's) watchlists have been reset, so that any changes to watched pages that happened before MediaWiki 1.5 aren't on the watchlist. Thunderbird 17:50, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Well that's kinda nifty. It seems that once you click on a bolded item on your watchlist, the next time you go to your watchlist the change is no longer bolded. Probably the case is the same for watched pages in Recent Changes. That's new, right? It is pretty nifty. Thunderbird 19:02, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, pretty cool. -- Tom 20:03, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
One other thing I discovered about it, is if you just check 'diff', it stays bold. You have to click on the actual page for it to de-bold. That's my contribution to the 1.5 transition. :) Thunderbird 23:58, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Edit Summaries

The edit summaries in Recent changes and page histories are not italic, but WP's are. *bites fingernails* —BazookaJoe 18:35, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

They are italic for me. Hmm. -- Tom 19:50, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 404'd

I can't go into Stinkoman 20X6 Enimies, because every time I click on it it goes to a 404 page. - Genstar

never mind --Genstar 18:55, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Most pages are blocked by 404'd, even ones I previously visited. --user:anomynimys 16:30, 9 october 2005 (UTC)

Which pages? What are the urls when you get the 404 errors? -- Tom 20:34, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

All gotten multiple in the Stinkoman 20X6 pages.---RatherAnnoying 22:45, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

What pages? Could you provide the names for the page and the URLs for when you receive the 404 errors? -- Tom 23:22, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Many A few pages point to /new/index.php instead of /index.php. This is causing all the 404s. One example is a few of the links on Horrible Painting. The MAZZTer

None of the links on that page do what you described. Could you provide the URLs for when you receive the 404 errors and the pages that link to them? -- Tom 02:13, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

All links to videlectrix games result in a 404'd page.

Specifically, the non-playable Videlectrix games and Horrible Painting's links, pictures, and so on, all lead to that "/new" directory thing mentioned earlier. --DorianGray
I'm not seeing this... --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 03:04, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
I could make a screenshot if you'd like. --DorianGray
I'm not saying it's not happening for you, but it's not happening for me. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 03:13, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
Hmm. 'Tis a puzzlement. Maybe it's my browser or something. --DorianGray

I am seeing it for me, on a few pages. If it helps, I'm running Mozilla Firefox 1.07 on Windows 98 SE. --Blu Aardvark (talk) (edits) 03:18, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Eh, I just ran a purge command on the page I was seeing problems with, and it fixed it. For me, at least. --Blu Aardvark (talk) (edits) 03:18, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
Whatever it was you did, it works for me now too. Weird... --DorianGray
Try purging the cache for each of the pages. Dorian, you said the non-playable Videlectrix games. (Meaning, if Rabbit Algebra does not work, purge it's cache by clicking on this link.) Then try it again. -- Tom 03:23, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
How do you do that purging thing? --DorianGray
  • The easiest way for me is to right click on the edit tab, and copy the URL. Then I paste that into the address bar, but replace action=edit with action=purge. --Blu Aardvark (talk) (edits) 03:41, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for that, Blu Aardvark. It worked. All the pages that seemed messed up are all right again. I'll have to keep that ability in mind. --DorianGray

[edit] Character Head Images

The images won't load on Quote of the Week Character Heads and the links point to http://www.hrwiki.org/new/index.php/

They display okay for me. Is it better now? -- Tom 19:37, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
No, they still don't display. The weird thing is if I go to the history page and compare the last two versions, then everything looks correct. - M Moogle
Have you tried a hard refresh of the page? Or emptying your browser's cache? -- Tom 19:45, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Yep, I tried both. For good measure I even tried it in IE which I never use, and it still didn't load correctly. - M Moogle
Doesn't work for me either. Just so you know it's not just him. --DorianGray
Any better now? Are you sure you cleared all of your temp files, etc.? -- Tom 20:12, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
It looks normal now. I don't know what you did, but you sure fixed everything up. --DorianGray
It works for me now as well. - M Moogle
This happened to me on several cheat commandos links, any help?
Try the thread right above this, "404'd." It seems to address the same problem. —AbdiViklas 06:05, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New pages

Crisper drawer doesn't appear on Special:Newpages. I'm not sure if this happens for every new page (this very page appears on it, though). —FireBird|Talk 19:16, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Hmm, that might be because of how it got moved and stuff, or maybe something else. It seems to work for other pages though. -- Tom 19:39, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Protected Page Message

Whenever I edited a protected page, it would say "WARNING: This page has been locked so that only users with sysop privileges can edit it. Be sure you are following the protected page guidelines." It still does this, but it's not bolded anymore. Is this supposed to happen? Thunderbird 19:41, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Fixed. See MediaWiki:Protectedpagewarning. -- Tom 19:48, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] That table thing

I seem to remember that table "movie preview" thing on my userpage being all white. Now, some of it is black. Am i remembering incorrectly, or is it a problem? --smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 21:33, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

I checked into the page I got it from, Commandos in the Classroom, and part of that is black too.

I fixed it for you. The Monobook stylesheet has a rule which make table contents black text by default - so you need to override that in the table style. I'm guessing it wasn't like that in 1.4, so tables would inherit the text colour from their parent. --phlip TC 21:39, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks Philip. --smileyface.PNG11945 (Talk/Ctrbs) 21:46, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Minor exclamation

This is a minor thing, but is the order of the exclamation point and the minor "m" reversed from what it used to be in the recent changes? If I'm remembering correctly, the red exclamation points used to all line up, and it was better that way. — It's dot com 04:31, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

 !Hey, you're right --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 04:37, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
I can't change the order (easily, I'd imagine), but I can easily style <span class="minor"> and <span class="unpatrolled">. How do you guys want it? -- Tom 04:46, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
Okay, so after a second viewing under the tutelage of Pom Pom's keen eyes, it appears that I was misremembering the old version, as this example shows:
(diff) (hist) . . m ! 3 Times Halloween Funjob; 10:16 . . Homestar Coder (Talk) (Reverted ...)
Apparently, the difference is that there used to be a space between the two. I wonder why this was changed. (Also, the styles themselves are fine and don't need to be changed.) — It's dot com 05:12, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
Hmm, I seem to remember this:
Arr_r.png m! 11:32 Main Page (diff; hist) . . 127.0.0.1 (Talk) (Section - Editing this section.)
Also, the relavent code is found around line 18 in ChangesList.php is as follows:
	/**
	 * Returns the appropiate flags for new page, minor change and patrolling
	 */
	function recentChangesFlags( $new, $minor, $patrolled, $nothing = '&nbsp;' ) {
		$f = $new ? '<span class="newpage">' . wfMsgHtml( 'newpageletter' ) . '</span>'
				: $nothing;
		$f .= $minor ? '<span class="minor">' . wfMsgHtml( 'minoreditletter' ) . '</span>'
				: $nothing;
		$f .= $patrolled ? '<span class="unpatrolled">!</span>' : $nothing;
		return $f;
	}
What do you think? Is it really different? -- Tom 06:06, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
I've never seen anything like your example. Could it be the developer version? The example I provided was taken directly from an HTML dump of the recent changes right before the upgrade (edited to make the links work and for the length of the line, but otherwise intact). The only difference I see between it and the current recent changes is the space between the m and the !. — It's dot com 06:21, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
No, not a developer version, I just have Enhanced Recent Changes enabled in my preferences. That's what it looks like for me. Yours is what it looks like for regular Recent Changes. -- Tom 06:41, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] HELP!

[edit] Re-confirming E-mail address

Ever since the upgrade, I am finding it difficult to email anyone via the wiki's E-mail this user link. For some reason, the system thinks that none of the email adresses have been authenticated, thus requiring everyone to visit Preferences. Under the "Email" portion of "User data" one will find a way to have a new e-mail address confirmation sent. I am fairly sure this has affected all users. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 14:07, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

It looks like User:GWR 2004 is doing some crazy stuff on his/her userpage. He or she might have broken something, but I'm guessing a particular thing they did just queried the database too heavily. You might want to ask them. -- Tom 23:05, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

Did you hide the SQL query or did the software? -- Tom 02:46, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
The software. The above is copied and pasted as-was. — It's dot com
The last time I saw this error message, it was when MediaWiki:Sitenotice was blanked instead of leaving it is a dash. But now, content is in there, and the error is still occuring. I am using Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7 on a Windows XP Professional machine, if that information is necessary. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif, 21:51, 12 October 2005 (BST)
Tom, think it's possible to enable display of the queries? (Or alternatively, just send out an e-mail with it?) The displayed error doesn't seem to bring any possible issue to mind, so it's hard to tell when there's no way of knowing what it was trying to do... --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 21:03, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
If the query should be displayed, set $wgShowSQLErrors to true in LocalSettings.php. If it should be e-mailed, add the code to the databaseError function in includes/OutputPage.php before the query is hidden. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 21:10, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
I like the OutputPage.php option better. How should I set that up? -- Tom 14:41, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
Note that this is based on MediaWiki 1.4.5, but it should be quite similar in 1.5.x.
Open includes/OutputPage.php and look for the text function databaseError. You should see a block of code similar to this:
       function databaseError( $fname, $sql, $error, $errno ) {
               global $wgUser, $wgCommandLineMode, $wgShowSQLErrors;

               $this->setPageTitle( wfMsgNoDB( 'databaseerror' ) );
               $this->setRobotpolicy( 'noindex,nofollow' );
               $this->setArticleRelated( false );
               $this->enableClientCache( false );
               $this->mRedirect = ;

               if( !$wgShowSQLErrors ) {
                       $sql = wfMsg( 'sqlhidden' );
               }
Add the following lines before if( !$wgShowSQLErrors ) {, putting in the appropriate e-mail address as the first parameter to mail():
$header='From: SQLMonitor@hrwiki.org\r\nX-Mailer: MediaWiki/'. $wgVersion .', PHP/'. phpversion();
mail('destination e-mail','HRWiki: Failed query',$sql, $header);
Save and upload. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 17:17, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
Done. I'll let you know what errors come up. -- Tom 20:15, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
If you prefer, you can add my e-mail address to the destination field by seperating the two with a comma. So that'd be your@email.something, my@email.something. This will send a copy of it to both addresses. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 21:28, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
I just spoke with Brion Vibber via IRC about the errors I've received already and he had me change a line in a file that should fix the problem. Let me know if the errors still occur. -- Tom 23:11, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Weird extra Talk Page note

# (cur) (last)  15:32, 15 October 2005 Thunderbird L17 (→Personal CSS - - Reply.)  updated (since my last visit)
# (cur) (last) 15:26, 15 October 2005 It's dot com (Personal CSS)
# (cur) (last) 18:39, 13 October 2005 Thunderbird L17 (→Story? - - Reply to Lapper.)

The 'updated (since my last visit)' was bordered seperately in red, and I didn't write it. Then I realized I was watching my talk page, therefore the 'new message' message kept coming up. I unwatched it, and the message went away. Any significance of the red bordered message at all? Thunderbird 22:39, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

It's meant to show you if an article has been changed since the last time you visited it. I think it's a part of the Enotif extension to MediaWiki, as it doesn't appear on Wikipedia. I don't really know a lot about that extension, but I think that's one of its features. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 23:59, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
You're seeing the MediaWiki:Updatedmarker. As far as I know, what you've described is exactly what is supposed to happen. This feature came standard with MediaWiki 1.5.0 and simply put: the page has changed since your last visit. -- Tom 02:08, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] You have new messages

The following threads discuss the same issue and have been grouped here. The cause of the problem was bug 3805, which has now been fixed. — It's dot com 01:52, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thread 1

I recently got a new message, and even though I replied, it still shows the You Have new Messages banner. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 20:39, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Hmm. It might be because someone changed another page on your watchlist. I haven't tested this yet though. -- Tom 20:43, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
I removed my talk page from my watchlist, and the problem is fixed. ~Rogue Leader / (my talk)

I had something similar happen to me, although my page is not on my watch list. Does anybody have any suggestsions? ~Isaac Smith

I still can't figure out why it's doing this. I've moved to a new computer, and logged in there, but I didn't think that that would fix it. Hmmmm... ~Isaac Smith

Isaac, you may want to try manually clicking on the "unwatch" button on your user talk page. For some reason, our watchlists were not backward compatible, meaning that the system might tell you that you don't have any pages on your watchlist, even though you still do. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 02:38, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thread 2

When I get a new message, I check it, but when I go anywhere else after checking it, it still says, "You have new messages" and the last messages were the ones I checked. HELP! - Young Roy

  • I've had this same problem on another wiki, and although I am not sure what is causing it (the other wiki isn't upgraded yet), clearing your browser cache should solve it. --Blu Aardvark (talk) (edits) 12:04, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
The answer to your problem is already answered on this page right here. Always check before starting a new thread. small_logo.pngUsername-talk 12:34, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thread 3

I seem to alweys have the "You have new messages." orange thingy above the page. I already read what was sent to me and repleyed. Why won't it go away? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 12:05, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

Try removing your talk page from your watchlist. See #New Messages and #"New messages" for more information. -- Tom 12:53, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
Oh. Thanks. Soo.. Now when I do get a new massege, would it show the orange bar? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 12:58, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

If I want to reestablish the connection between the two, I have to manually unwatch and then re-watch the article.) — It's dot com 13:33, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

Argh! The same thing is happening to me! I can't remove my talk page from my watchlist because it says that I have no items on my watchlist. But I know it has to be on my watchlist because the page title is in bold on Recent Changes. I just can't see to get rid of the banner or remove the page from the watch list! Please reply ASAP!
PS: I tried adding this page to the watchlist and both this page AND User talk:The Chort have turned up. I can remove this page but not the talk page! Stupid Wiki!
PPS: It's gone! HOORAY! Please ignore everything above this line.
Just for the record, I got rid of the orange template thingy by adding my User page to my watchlist and then removing it. I think that sorted it. – The Chort 17:17, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

Again, if you missed the notice above: This bug has been fixed. — It's dot com 01:52, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Talk page watchlist

Here's something that's driving me mad. When you watch your talkpage, the new message sitemessage won't go away, right? So I unwatch it. The thing is, everytime I get a new message, it starts watching it again by itself. I looked, but it didn't seem like this problem was addressed here. Any suggestions? Thunderbird 22:15, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

It looks like the way the talk page is added to the watchlist has been changed. First of all, you no longer can manually add it to your watchlist. If someone sends you a message, your talk page is automatically watched. When you check your talk page, it is automatically unwatched (now that the bug above has been fixed). I don't know whether this is a separate bug or an intentional new feature. — It's dot com 01:55, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Edit conflict

Obviously, the mechanism for determining whether there's an edit conflict has been enhanced to that if different sections are modified at the same time, a conflict doesn't necessarily occur. Is there some page somewhere that details the new functionality? In spite of it, however, I was still able to accidentally revert some changes with this edit (the hidden comment) and had to fix it here. — It's dot com 21:38, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

What should happen is that it detects whether the section you were editing has changed. If not, it merges your changes into the article, regardless of any other edits.
That said, I'm not sure why you had that happen to you, unless you had an edit conflict PRIOR to that and then copy/pasted your version to overwrite the other one. I've yet to see such a thing happen on Wikipedia. --Pidgeot (t) (c) (e) 23:43, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, it's the MetaWikipedia:Help:Edit conflict technology. I think your situation might have something to do with your previous edit, which dealt with that very text. Of course, I have no idea, but that's my best guess. -- Tom 02:14, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
This may have come up again recently, and it has been discussed on my talk page. To summarize, it probably has to do with bug 1150. — It's dot com 01:57, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Special:Random question.

How come this talk page seems to count as part of the main namespace for search and random page? - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

Hmm. What's even more interesting is the difference between this search and this one. -- Tom 06:59, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
